Flexible Zn–air batteries (FZABs) have attracted more attention due to their high specific energy, excellent stability, and unique rechargeability. However, these batteries are limited by the low conductivity of the gel electrolytes used. Here a quasi-liquid gel with ionic conductivity comparable to liquid electrolytes is presented. The gel pore structure is guided and modified in situ with large-size silica to achieve clear and unbroken pores. The reduced skeleton structure leads to a significant increase in ionic conductivity to 562.6 mS cm −1 , enabling a peak power density of 154 mW cm −2 and a cycle life of over 40 h with a low charge–discharge gap. The FZABs also exhibit a high lifetime and potential advantages in 10 mA cm −2 charge/discharge testing, and demonstrate excellent performance in practical applications. This study offers new possibilities for developing high-performance quasi-liquid gels and innovative concepts for FZABs.

Sb 2 Se 3 is a promising light-absorbing material with low cost and good photocatalytic activity. In this paper, Sb 2 Se 3 thin films doped with zinc (Zn) were deposited on ultra-white glass by hydrothermal method, using ZnCl 2 , sodium selenate and antimony potassium tartrate as raw materials. And the photocatalytic activity was evaluated by photocatalytic decolorization reaction with methylene blue (MB) solution. The results showed that the highest photocatalytic activity was displayed when Zn 2+ was doped with 0.10 mmol, and its degradation rate of methylene blue was 1.66 times higher than that of pure Sb 2 Se 3 . Zn 2+ doped Sb 2 Se 3 film can effectively inhibit the recombination of electron-hole pairs, thereby improving the optical activity. According to the free radical capture experiment, photogenerated holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (·O 2− ) are the decisive active substances in the photocatalytic process. This method provides a reliable way for transition metal ions doped metal selenides to degrade organic dyes.

In this article, TiO 2 -modified ZnO nanotube arrays (NTAs) are successfully synthesized and used to prepare a nonenzymatic biosensor for the detection of glucose and hydrazine hydrate. In brief, the ZnO@TiO 2 NTAs are synthesized on zinc foil by two steps of simple hydrothermal method. Therefore, it can be directly used as a working electrode and is not needed to be modified to other electrode surface by any means to form a sensor. In the oxidation of glucose and reduction reaction of hydrazine hydrate, it exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance. Moreover, it has high sensitivity, a fast response time (less than 3 s), and a detection limit as low as 0.5 μM (S/N = 3) toward glucose and hydrazine hydrate respectively. In the selectivity of the target analyte, the Zn–ZnO@TiO 2 nanocomposite electrode can effectively resist the influence of different interferent, including uric acid, dopamine, and l -cysteine.

Nowadays, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, such as layered double hydroxides (LDH), have received considerable attention for their potential to meeting clean energy demand and solving environmental problems. In this work, novel and efficient photocatalysts of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles coated Zn/Ti-LDH nanosheets have been synthesized through low-temperature reduction method. The structural characteristics of the as-prepared products were investigated by a series of characteristic methods The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images showed that Ag nanoparticles were distributed on the surface of Zn/Ti-LDH uniformly. The UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) showed that the absorbance of Ag/LDH in visible-light region enhanced markedly and presented a broad band at 500–600 nm, which was resulted from the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of Ag nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activities of Ag/LDH were evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine-B (RhB) and NO. The photocatalytic experiments showed that Ag/LDH had higher photocatalytic activity than that of pure LDH , and 2%Ag/LDH exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity. In addition, the 2%Ag/LDH exhibited high photochemical stability after multiple reaction runs. The obtained results from photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopic measurement and transient photocurrent ( I – V ) analysis both revealed the existence of Schottky barriers between LDH and Ag nanoparticles. The electron spin resonance (ESR) showed that OH were the dominant active species in the photo-degradation process. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the composite should be ascribed to both the SPR effect of Ag nanoparticles in visible light and the Schottky barriers between LDH and Ag nanoparticles.

Environmental-friendly aqueous Zn−CO 2 batteries present bifunctional potentials of achieving carbon neutrality and energy storage. Nonetheless, anode corrosions derived from H 2 O molecules and high risks of volatilization and leakage hinder the advancement of Zn−CO 2 batteries. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based hydrogel electrolyte with fast ion diffusion kinetics, high mechanical strength, and flexibility is developed to replace liquid electrolyte. Since hydroxyl radicals in the polymer chain can interact with H 2 O and Zn 2+ , electrode corrosion from free H 2 O and active H 2 O around Zn 2+ is significantly inhibited, facilitating the uniform deposition of Zn 2+ cations. The introduction of an ionic liquid plasticizer further enhances the interaction between Zn 2+ and polymer backbone, as well as amorphous extent of the electrolyte. The hydrogel electrolyte possesses adequate self-healing ability, whose ionic conductivity reaches 7.95 × 10 −3 S cm −1 . The symmetric Zn metal batteries containing the electrolyte remain steady for >2000 h under different current densities. Furthermore, the Zn−CO 2 battery based on Ru nanoparticles cathode and hydrogel electrolyte realizes a discharge capacity of 6028 mAh g −1 and stable cyclicity for 90 times. The reaction path of hydrogel electrolyte-based Zn−CO 2 battery is that CO 2 is reduced to ZnCO 3 and C species followed by reversible decomposition of discharge products on recharge.

In this work, we reported the growth of cadmium-free Ag-doped Zn–In–S nanocrystals (NCs) with effective photoluminescence (PL) via a hot-injection strategy. The effects of the nucleation temperatures, reaction times, and Ag-doping concentrations on the PL properties of Ag-doped Zn–In–S NCs were investigated systematically. The as-synthesized NCs exhibit color-tunable PL emissions covering a broad visible range of 472–585 nm. After being passivated by a protective ZnS shell, the PL quantum yield (QY) of the resultant NCs was greatly improved up to 33%. With the increase of the Ag-doping level, the PL is significantly intensified due to the improved concentration of Ag ions which provides more holes to recombine with electrons from the bottom of the conduction band. This also makes the emission via the dopant energy level become a powerful, competitive advantage for the NCs with higher Ag-doping levels, resulting in a longer lifetime and higher PL QY. These results suggest that tailoring the Ag-doping level can be a powerful strategy to control the optical properties of Ag-doped Zn–In–S NCs.

Zn-doped hydroxyapatite/graphene (Zn-doped HA/GP) composite was successfully in situ synthesized by one-pot hydrothermal treatment for the first time, and was studied through experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations. The effects of a series of Zn contents (0mol%, 1mol%, 5mol%, 10mol% and 20mol%) on the HA crystal structure, the morphology and composition of composites were also investigated. The obtained doped composites were analyzed and characterized by the techniques of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy . Density functional theory calculations of Zn-doped HA showed that the replacement of Zn ions in HA crystal lattice could cause the OH − group to move off the c axis toward the Zn ions and become closer to the PO 4 3− group, resulting in the formation of hydrogen-bond between OH − and PO 4 3− groups. The morphology of Zn-doped HA/GP composite showed that Zn-doped HA grains with molar fraction of 1 mol% Zn are intimately attached on the surface of graphene whereas the amounts of Zn-doped HA attached on the GP surface reduce obviously and the interfacial interactions are weakened accordingly as the Zn doping amount increased from 5 to 20 mol%, which indicates that the low crystallinity of Zn-doped HA particles due to an increasing Zn content may have a negative effect on interfacial interaction between Zn-doped HA and GP.

Highly luminescent AgInS 2 –ZnS quantum dots were obtained by a one-pot two steps hot injection approach. The effect of the reaction time on the properties of the quantum dot was systematically investigated. By the introduction of Zn ions , the emission peak was blue-shift from 638 nm to 584 nm in 15 min, while the emission peaks of the obtained AgInS 2 –ZnS quantum dots were tuned in a narrow range with a bit red-shift from 584 to 589 nm as the reaction was continued. The highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) was up to about 72% when the reaction was prolonged to 15 min. Further, results showed that the morphologies were varied as the reaction was continued. In addition, the PL decay curves demonstrated that the component of PL bands resulted from Zn doping was observed, while the PL behavior was originated from the donor-acceptor recombination.

Transition metal oxides have been identified as the best potential candidates to replace Pt-based HER catalysts. But they are still limited by the high HER overpotential, due to the undesirable adsorption/desorption of surface hydrogen. In this work, Zn with low concentrations were incorporated into the tetrahedral Co 2+ sites of Co 3 O 4 by hydrothermal and subsequent annealing treatment. They exhibit excellent HER performance. Particularly, when the Zn content in Co 3 O 4 is 6.3 at%, an overpotential of 79.2 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 was obtained in alkaline medium, which significantly better than pure Co 3 O 4 catalyst (196.3 mV). Moreover, the current density of the Zn-doped Co 3 O 4 catalyst can maintained 93 % after 10 h and 80 % after 20 h. DFT calculations reveal that the Δ G H* of Zn-doped Co 3 O 4 (0.827 eV) is smaller and closer to zero than pure Co 3 O 4 (1.023 eV). This work provides a deep insight into the rational design of low-level metal-doped cobalt oxide-based electrocatalysts.

Dendrite formation severely compromises further development of zinc ion batteries. Increasing the nucleation overpotential plays a crucial role in achieving uniform deposition of metal ions. However, this strategy has not yet attracted enough attention from researchers to our knowledge. Here, we propose that thermodynamic nucleation overpotential of Zn deposition can be boosted through complexing agent and select sodium L-tartrate (Na-L) as example. Theoretical and experimental characterization reveals L-tartrate anion can partially replace H 2 O in the solvation sheath of Zn 2+ , increasing de-solvation energy. Concurrently, the Na + could absorb on the surface of Zn anode preferentially to inhibit the deposition of Zn 2+ aggregation. In consequence, the overpotential of Zn deposition could increase from 32.2 to 45.1 mV with the help of Na-L. The Zn-Zn cell could achieve a Zn utilization rate of 80% at areal capacity of 20 mAh cm −2 . Zn-LiMn 2 O 4 full cell with Na-L additive delivers improved stability than that with blank electrolyte. This study also provides insight into the regulation of nucleation overpotential to achieve homogeneous Zn deposition.

In aqueous electrolytes, the deterioration of Zn electrodes is mainly due to the electrolyte species ( e.g. , H 2 O, Zn 2+ , SO 4 2− , etc. ) involved side reactions happened at the Zn|electrolyte interface (ZEI). Here, we design a permselective polyelectrolyte (PPE) that is rich in hydrophobic ethylhexyl and anion-blocking sulfonate (–SO 3 − ) groups for Zn electrodes. During Zn electrodeposition, the PPE coating serves as a “screener” to suppress the transportation of undesired electrolyte species ( e.g. , H 2 O and SO 4 2− ) while homogenizing the Zn-ion flux. The as-designed PPE significantly suppresses the side reactions and prolongs the cycling life of the Zn electrodes. Even with a PPE layer as thin as ∼ 220 nm, the protected Zn electrode delivers an exceptional stability of > 3400 h at an areal capacity of 2 mAh cm −2 and > 1200 h at a higher capacity of 10 mAh cm −2 , superior to those of the control cells.

A novel no-clean flux enabled direct, plating-free soldering of Cu/Al joints using Sn42Bi58 paste. • Organic acid carbon chain length was tailored to regulate flux activity and interfacial reactions. • A synergistic mechanism between organic acids and fluoroborate salts was elucidated. • The medium-chain succinic acid flux achieved optimal joint strength via interfacial solid solution formation. • The study establishes a clear structure-property relationship from molecular design to joint performance. This study addresses the challenge of low-temperature, flux-based direct soldering for copper‑aluminum dissimilar joints, a critical need in advanced thermal management. A series of novel fluxes were synthesized by incorporating dicarboxylic acids with varying carbon chain lengths—malonic, succinic, and adipic acid—into a triethanolamine-fluoroborate matrix, mixed with Sn42Bi58 powder to form corresponding solder pastes (TL-1 to TL-4). Comprehensive characterization, including wettability tests, shear strength measurements, XRD, SEM-EDS, and FIB-TEM analysis, was conducted. Mechanistically, it is revealed that the carbon chain length dictates the critical balance between flux viscosity (steric hindrance) and carboxylate activation capability. The medium-chain succinic acid in TL-3 achieves an optimal “activation-diffusion-reaction” synergy. It acts concertedly with fluoroborates to thoroughly disrupt the stable native oxides (CuO and Al 2 O 3 ) while simultaneously lowering the diffusion energy barrier for Zn 2+ . This specific interfacial modulation entirely suppresses the conventional formation of brittle intermetallic compounds (IMCs) or non-bonded oxide residues. Consequently, TL-3 facilitates the formation of continuous nanoscale Cu 0.95 Zn 0.049 and Al 0.86 Zn 0.14 solid solution layers at the copper and aluminum interfaces, respectively, achieving robust atomic-level metallurgical bonding. Macroscopically, TL-3 exhibits superior performance with a minimum contact angle of 3.2° on Cu, an exceptional shear strength of 125.86 MPa, and an interfacial nanohardness of 0.826 ± 0.068 GPa. The primary scientific contribution of this work lies in elucidating this novel solid-solution-mediated interfacial strengthening mechanism, offering an innovative atomic-scale engineering pathway for the highly reliable, electroplating-free low-temperature soft soldering of Cu/Al heterogeneous structures.
