Green oxidative esterification of furfural over nano-Au supported on highly basic anion exchange resin beads

Cong Wan,Shuangshuang Cen,Xinyan Chai,Feifei Tao,Lei Li,Xiandong Yao,Huiquan Xiao,Lijun Wang

Au nanoparticles with an average diameter of 3.7 nm supported on the macroporous anion exchange resin beads with cationic –CH 2 N + Me 3 functional groups and OH − as counter anions were first prepared, for catalyzing the oxidative esterification of biomass-derived furfural in methanol using green O 2 as an oxidant. The main product methyl furoate with a high yield of 98% was obtained at 130 °C for 2 h in the absence of soluble alkali additives. The catalyst beads possessed a particle size range of 560∼700 μm inherited from the shaped support, enabling the separation of catalyst and liquid reaction medium by a simple decantation method. Catalyst poisoning experiments demonstrated Au activated superoxide radical O 2 · − and the basic OH − stored in the anion exchange resin are the decisive active components for the oxidative esterification, and the main product methyl furoate with a yield of 20% and a high selectivity of 96% was obtained under N 2 atmosphere revealed the reaction in this catalytic system followed an oxidative dehydrogenation route. In all catalytic cases except for the catalyst poisoning experiments and the cases of low catalyst dosages, the by-product acetal was almost completely suppressed, probably attributed to the presence of the alkaline OH − in the anion exchange resin of the catalyst.

Hollow Mesoporous Nanoreactors with Encaged PtSn Alloy Nanoparticles for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural to Furfuryl Alcohol

Tao Xiao,Peijian Yan,Kaijie Li,Caoping Yang,Hongbo Yu,Junyou Wang,Hongfeng Yin,Shenghu Zhou

Hollow mesoporous nanoreactors with encaged functional nanoparticles are promising heterogeneous catalysts due to the advantages related to their hollow cavities. In this study, we employ metal ion-bound polymer micelles to synthesize PtSn alloy nanoparticle-encaged hollow mesoporous nanoreactors (PtSn@HMSNs), which contain ∼4 nm PtSn alloy NPs located in ∼13 nm hollow cavities and relatively large (∼9 nm) mesoporous channels in silica shells. Relative to monometallic Pt@HMSNs and supported Pt1Sn0.3/SiO2, Pt1Sn0.3@HMSNs exhibit greatly enhanced activity and selectivity for hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. At 1.0 MPa H2, 100 °C, and a furfural/Pt molar ratio of 1884:1, 97.5% of furfuryl alcohol yield was achieved in 5.0 h. The dramatically promoted catalytic performance of Pt1Sn0.3@HMSNs can be assigned to the confinement effect that the location of active NPs inside hollow cavities increases the collision rates between reactants and active NPs to promote catalytic activity, as well as the synergistic effect between Pt and Sn.

Characterization and analysis of activated carbons prepared from furfural residues by microwave-assisted pyrolysis and activation

Wenya Ao,Jie Fu,Xiao Mao,Nasarul Wahab,Chunmei Ran,Qinhao Kang,Yang Liu,Zhihui Jiang,Jianjun Dai,Xiaotao Bi

Activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from furfural residues (FRs) by microwave-assisted pyrolysis and activation under CO 2 atmosphere in this study. At microwave activation temperature of 800 °C and activation time of 20 min, KOH impregnated ACs (MKFRAC*) reached the maximum adsorption ability. While water-washed FRs (MWFRAC*) needed higher processing temperature and longer treatment time (850 °C/60 min) to attain its maximum adsorption capacity . Raman showed MKFRAC* had a high R-value, indicating the graphite structure's low crystallinity caused by the porous structure . The iodine adsorption value, Methylene Blue (MB) number, and yield of MKFRAC* were 1159.1 mg/g, 448.0 mg/g and 26.8% wt%, respectively. The mesopore volume of MKFRAC* was >48%, more than those of other ACs mainly due to the synergistic effect of chemical reagents , carbon structure and microwave irradiation . The investigation on the adsorption mechanism of MB on ACs revealed that MB adsorption capacities of MKFRAC were well described by the Langmuir model, showing a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 562.9 mg/g, while MB adsorption kinetics of MKFRAC followed a pseudo-second-order model. The results showed microwave preparation of FR-based ACs was a feasible technique with potential industrial applications.

Biobased high-performance tri-furan functional bis-benzoxazine resin derived from renewable guaiacol, furfural and furfurylamine

Rui Yang,Mengchao Han,Boran Hao,Kan Zhang

A novel fully biobased tri-furan functional bis-benzoxazine resin has been synthesized using guaiacol , furfural, furfurylamine and paraformaldehyde as raw materials via a two-step reaction approach. The detailed chemical structure of this newly obtained bis-benzoxazine monomer has been identified by NMR and FT-IR spectroscopies and elemental analysis. In addition, another bio-based benzoxazine monomer has also been synthesized based on the Mannich condensation of guaiacol, furfurylamine and paraformaldehyde for comparison. The polymerization behaviors of benzoxazines are investigated by DSC and in situ FT-IR, and the thermal and fire-related performances of resulting thermosets are investigated by TGA and micro-scale combustion calorimetry (MCC), respectively. Notably, the corresponding polybenzoxazine derived from the newly developed tri-furan functional bis-benzoxazine shows very excellent thermal stability with a T g of 290 °C and a T d10 (the temperature at a weight loss of 10%) of 375 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. Moreover, a non-ignitable polybenzoxazine has also been achieved as shown by the very low heat release capacity (30.4 J g −1 K −1 ) and total heat release value (5.8 kJ/g), making this bio-based thermosetting resin a promising material for high-performance applications.

Heterogeneous Nickel Catalysts Derived from 2D Metal–Organic Frameworks for Regulating the Selectivity of Furfural Hydrogenation

Pengfei Guo,Shengyun Liao,Xinli Tong

Hydrolysis of the biomass platform compound furfural can produce a bulk of fine chemicals because of its multiple functional groups. Developing an efficient catalytic system to regulate the process toward some desirable products has always been a hot research area. Herein, the novel Ni-based catalysts (Ni-MFC-X, X = 300, 400...800) synthesized by pyrolysis of the 2D Ni-based metal–organic framework (MOF) in the temperature range 300–800 °C show good performance for selective hydrogenation of furfural (FUR). Interestingly, the calcination temperature of the MOF precursor plays an important role in hydrogenation of furfural with controllable selectivity toward furfuryl alcohol (FOL) and tetrahydro FOL (THFOL). Ni-MFC-500 affords us 92.5% conversion of furfural and 59.5% selectivity of FOL. Ni-MFC-700 can promote hydrogenation of furfural with 91.8% conversion and 51.0% selectivity of THFOL. Furthermore, the stability of as-obtained Ni-MFC-500 and Ni-MFC-700 was also very impressive in this reaction system.

Mechanochemical Synthesis of Sulfonated Palygorskite Solid Acid Catalysts for Selective Catalytic Conversion of Xylose to Furfural

Ruoqing Wang,Xuefeng Liang,Feng Shen,Mo Qiu,Jirui Yang,Xinhua Qi

A green, safe, and easy-operation method for the preparation of sulfonated palygorskite solid acid catalyst (PAL-SO3H) was developed by a mechanochemical process, where thiol groups (−SH) were grafted onto natural palygorskite by a high-speed shearing process with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane in aqueous solution under mild conditions, followed by the oxidation of −SH to −SO3H groups. The as-prepared PAL-SO3H catalyst was applied in the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived xylose into furfural, and it showed excellent catalytic activity, and as high as 87% of furfural yield with 96% selectivity was achieved at 180 °C in 60 min reaction time in the γ-valerolactone–water mixture (95:5 v/v %). The PAL-SO3H catalyst was tolerant of high initial xylose loading concentration up to 120 g/L and exhibited good recyclability. This study provides a green and mild process for the synthesis of a sulfonated solid acid catalyst, which should have potential applications in many fields such as catalysis and adsorption.

Efficient catalytic conversion of corn stalk and xylose into furfural over sulfonated graphene in γ-valerolactone

Jianru Ma,Wenzhi Li,Shengnan Guan,Qiying Liu,Qingqing Li,Chaofeng Zhu,Tao Yang,Ajibola Temitope Ogunbiyi,Longlong Ma

Sulfonated graphene (SG) was prepared and employed to convert corn stalk and xylose into furfural. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to characterize SG. The effects of reaction time, temperature, substrate loading, catalyst dosage and solvents on the reaction were researched and optimized. SG exhibited high catalytic activity in the conversion of xylose and corn stalk to furfural. A fairly high furfural yield of 96% was achieved at 150 °C from xylose and a 71.9% furfural yield was obtained when using a 10.7 ratio (mass ratio: xylose to SG) at 140 °C. While a 48% furfural yield was obtained from corn stalk (based on the starting combined moles of xylan and glucan in corn stalk; yield was >100%, if based on only xylan) using a substrate loading (corn stalk to catalyst mass ratio) of 2.14 and a 19% 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) yield was obtained. What's more, a 43.9% yield of furfural was obtained in only 20 min. In addition, the reusability of SG was also investigated and shown to have good stability for xylose dehydration.

Synergistic effects of anionic surfactants on adsorption of norfloxacin by magnetic biochar derived from furfural residue

Changjing Li,Yuan Gao,Aimin Li,Lei Zhang,Guozhao Ji,Kongyun Zhu,Xuexue Wang,Yulin Zhang

Norfloxacin (NOR) is a persistent organic pollutant and can be effectively removed from effluent by adsorption of biochar. However, the presence of other emerging contaminants , such as surfactants, will potentially alter adsorption performance of norfloxacin by biochar and the molecular-scale mechanisms of the interaction between surfactants and biochar remain poorly understood. In this study, adsorption of norfloxacin on magnetic biochar prepared with iron-containing furfural residue (FRMB) in the presence or absence of anionic surfactants was investigated. The adsorption of NOR was significantly affected by the initial pH and anionic surfactants-sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). In the presence of SDS and SDBS, the maximum sorption capacities of NOR were 2.33 and 1.97 times higher than that in the absence of surfactants, reached to 698.6 mg g −1 and 589.9 mg g −1 , respectively. The optimal pH condition which was 4 indicated that electrostatic adsorption played a decisive role in the adsorption process after introduction of SDS/SDBS. The adsorption data were fitted well by the Elovich model and Freundlich model at the optimal conditions in which both SDS and SDBS were hemimicelle (0.8 mM SDS or 0.4 mM SDBS), indicating surface heterogeneity of FRMB and the adsorption mechanism was related to the assembly of surfactants on biochar. FTIR results showed that FRMB and SDS/SDBS interacted through hydrophobic action, and more complex or aggregates were formed between the NOR and biochar/SDS/SDBS. This work highlights the synergistic enhancement effects of tested surfactants on the removal of NOR by magnetic biochar from aqueous systems.

Ru/HZSM-5 as an efficient and recyclable catalyst for reductive amination of furfural to furfurylamine

Chenglong Dong,Hongtao Wang,Haochen Du,Jiebang Peng,Yang Cai,Shuai Guo,Jianli Zhang,Chanatip Samart,Mingyue Ding

Furfurylamine converted from biomass-based platform molecules furfural was proven a significant intermediate in the synthesis of different valuable compounds. The combination of Ruthenium with HZSM-5 was acted as an excellent selective and reusable catalyst for the reduction amination of furfural with environmentally friendly ammonia and hydrogen. Incorporation of Ru species into HZSM-5 had a significant enhancement to the acid sites of Ru/HZSM-5. The Ru/HZSM-5(46) catalyst with optimized acid sites and interaction of the Ru-O-Al bond displayed an excellent catalytic performance, producing 76 % yield of furfurylamine at only 15 min, and could be recycled five times without loss of performance. Synergistic effect between RuO 2 and metallic Ru in the Ru/HZSM-5 catalyst facilitated the reduction amination of furfural.

Efficient conversion of fructose to 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural by reactive extraction and in-situ esterification

Xiong Caixia,Sun Yong,Du Juan,Chen Wei,Si Zhihao,Gao He,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai

5-[(Formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), an analogue of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is becoming more attractive due to its superior stability and hydrophobicity, which make it easier to refineand store. In the present study, FMF was produced from fructose by one-pot approach in pure formic acid media or by a two-step approach via HMF in choline chloride (ChCl)/fructose deep eutectic solvents (DES) system. A favorable FMF yield of 63.22% was reached by two-step approach. In addition, the effects of reaction parameters, such as temperature and acidity, on preparation of FMF from fructose were systematically investigated. The dehydration of fructose into HMF was confirmed as the rate-controlling step in the consecutive reaction. Ultimately, the separation and purification procedures of FMF were put forward. The FMF with a purity of 98.8% was obtained finally. Meanwhile, the FMF purified by saturated sodium bicarbonate solution showed an excelled storage stability.

Application of Self-Assembled Raman Spectrum-Enhanced Substrate in Detection of Dissolved Furfural in Insulating Oil

Haiyang Shi,Weigen Chen,Fu Wan,Lingling Du,Shuhua Zhang,Weiran Zhou,Jiayi Zhang,Yingzhou Huang,Chengzhi Zhu

Accurate detection of dissolved aging features in transformer oil is the key to judging the aging degree of oil-paper insulation. In this work, in order to realize in situ detection of furfural dissolved in transformer oil, silver nanoparticles were self-assembled on the surface of gold film with P-aminophenylthiophenol (PATP) as a coupling agent. Rhodamine-6G (R6G) was used as the probe molecule to test the enhancement effect. By optimizing the molecular concentration, molecular deposition time, and silver sol deposition time of PATP, the nanoparticles were made more uniform and compact, and an enhanced substrate with rich hot spots was obtained. The optimum substrate was developed, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of trace furfural dissolved in transformer oil was realized. The results showed that the substrate prepared under the conditions of 0.1 mol/L PATP, 5 h deposition in PATP and 12 h immersion in silver sol, had the best reinforcement effect (that is, uniform and compact particle arrangement and no particle clusters). By use of this substrate, the minimum detectable concentration of furfural in transformer oil was about 1.06 mg/L, which provides a new method for fast and nondestructive detection of transformer aging diagnosis.Keywords:surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy;transformer aging;concentration detection

Pt/CeO2@MOF Core@Shell Nanoreactor for Selective Hydrogenation of Furfural via the Channel Screening Effect

Yan Long,Shuyan Song,Jian Li,Lanlan Wu,Qishun Wang,Yu Liu,Rongchao Jin,Hongjie Zhang

Designing metal–organic framework (MOF)-encapsulated hybrid catalysts is considered as an effective way to realize catalytic selectivity because of advantages related to the unique channels of MOF. Here, a sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS)-induced, microwave-assisted route was developed to controllably construct Pt/CeO2@MOF core@shell hybrids. Using PSS as a modifying agent and followed by microwave assistance, MOFs could be continuously grown in an oriented manner on Pt/CeO2 nanospheres. The obtained Pt-CeO2@UIO-66-NH2 exhibited high conversion (99.3%) with high selectivity (>99%) for selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol. It showed that the CeO2 would promote the catalytic activity, whereas the size confinement effect of the UIO-66-NH2 channels can enhance the catalytic selectivity. This work highlights a useful strategy toward the universal synthesis of highly active, stable, and selective catalysts for further utilization.
