CO2-induced dissolution of ZnO into ionic liquids and its catalytic application for the hydration of propargylic alcohols

Yongxing Zhang,Jia Hu,Yong Xu,Xiangyu Yan,Siqi Zhang,Kang Duan,Cheng Chen,Ye Yuan,Francis Verpoort

An unexpected CO 2 -induced dissolution of ZnO into ionic liquids was discovered. This process exhibited high dissolution speed and the dissociated mixture was applied as an efficient Zn-based catalytic system for the CO 2 -promoted hydration of propargylic alcohols under atmospheric pressure with broad substrate scope. Moreover, this system could be recycled and reused for at least 16 times with excellent yields continuously obtained, which is an unprecedented record for this reaction. Significantly, this system could employ waste pigments as the ZnO source and work even under flue gas atmosphere. In the mechanistic investigations, the interaction between ZnO, CO 2 and ionic liquids to give N-heterocyclic carbene/CO 2 adducts proved to be the key factor for this specific dissolution. These adducts were further identified to exhibit better reactivity than the normal CO 2 by experimental data and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which might be responsible for the excellent performance of the abovementioned catalytic system.

Studies on the size effects of nano-TiO2 on Portland cement hydration with different water to solid ratios

Jinfeng Sun,Liang Tian,Zhuqing Yu,Yu Zhang,Chengdong Li,Guihua Hou,Xiaodong Shen

The effects of using different sizes of nano-TiO 2 (NT) on the hydration characteristics of Portland cement with different water to solid ratios (w/s, solid: cement + NT) were investigated in this study. Cement was partially replaced by NT with two sizes, 5 nm and 25 nm, at weight fractions of 0, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2.0%. The compressive strength, hydration products, hydration degree, pore structures and morphologies of the modified cement pastes were systematically evaluated. The experimental results showed that a suitable NT content effectively enhanced the compressive strength of the cement paste, and this enhancement directly depended on the NT particle size. Cement paste mixed with 5-nm NT resulted in a higher compressive strength than 25-nm NT, irrespective of the w/s ratio. The cement paste with a maximum compressive strength at all the curing ages was obtained using a 0.3 w/s ratio and 0.5 wt% of 5-nm NT (which were therefore identified as the optimal NT parameters). The compressive strength of this cement paste increased by 41.4%, 15.9%, 18.7% and 24.35% at 1, 3, 7 and 28 days, respectively, compared to a control sample. For both NT sizes, the w/s ratio and the NT content controlled the compressive strength development of the paste during the early and late ages, respectively. Compared with 25-nm NT, replacing cement by 5-nm NT within the optimum content range was more effective in accelerating cement hydration, increasing the hydration degree, decreasing the crystal size of Ca(OH) 2 , refining the pore structure and densifying the cement paste at the microscale, all of which increased the compressive strength at the macroscale.

Sustainable enhancement of fly ash/steel slag composite cement: The role of TriDiethanolamine Citrate in promoting hydration and microstructure

Bin Zeng,Shaojie Jia,Wenjin Han,Xumin Zhuang,Liwu Mo,Toshiharu Kishi

The development of sustainable cementitious materials is critical for reducing the environmental impact of the cement industry. This study examined the feasibility of using the new amide-alcohol organic hydration promoter, TriDiethanolamine Citrate (TriDECA), in fly ash or steel slag (FA/SS) composite cement. The effects of TriDECA on the hydration process, hydration products, microstructure and compressive strength of FA/SS composite cement, as well as its impact on the dissolution of FA and SS, were systematically investigated. Results demonstrated that TriDECA significantly accelerated the dissolution of FA and SS, promoted the formation of hydration products (C-S-H, AFm), and refined the pore structure. Additionally, TriDECA increased the concentration of critical ions in the pore solution, promoted hydration and enhanced overall performance. At 28 days, FA-TriDECA and SS-TriDECA showed 8.1 % and 14.2 % higher strength than FA-TEA and FA-Ref, respectively. For SS-TriDECA, the increase was 13.2 % and 11.2 % compared to SS-TEA and SS-Ref, respectively. These findings suggest that TriDECA is a promising additive for enhancing the sustainability and performance of FA/SS composite cements, offering advantages in hydration promotion and microstructure improvement over traditional alkanolamines.

Higher oxygen vacancy content and hydration capability enabled by magnesium doping for high-activity protonic ceramic fuel cell cathode

Liming Zhang,Bingjie Pang,Shiqing Hu,Zhongwei Cao,Peng Zhang,Xuefeng Zhu,Weishen Yang

Protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) are promising power generation equipment because of their high efficiency and low operating temperature. However, the sluggish oxidation-reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics of the cathode seriously limits their further development. Here, a low-valent alkaline-earth metal Mg-doped BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.2 O 3-δ (BaCo 0.4 Fe 0.4 Zr 0.1 Mg 0.1 O 3-δ  = BCFZMg0.1) cathode is developed to increase oxygen vacancy concentration and hydration capability of mixed oxygen ion-electron conducting (MIEC) electrode materials . The phase composition , microstructure, and stability in wet air were examined, while the oxygen vacancy , hydration capability, conductivity, and surface species of the materials were investigated. Experimental results demonstrate that the oxygen vacancy concentration, hydration capability, and conductivity are all increased by Mg doping. Consequently, the ORR active sites were expanded to the whole electrode surface , and the electrochemical performance of PCFCs with BCFZMg0.1 cathode was greatly improved (peak power density: >40% increase; polarization resistance : 60–70% decrease). This work provides a new strategy to develop cathodes with high ORR activity for PCFCs by doping Mg into the MIEC perovskite B-site.

Sintering Bi2O3–B2O3–ZnO ternary low temperature glass by hydration device to solidify iodine containing silver-coated silica gel

Wenhong Han,Guilin Wei,Yi Liu,Xirui Lu,Shunzhang Chen,Zhentao Zhang,Yi Xie,Xiaoyan Shu

A new glass solidification process aims at radioactive iodine waste was explored in order to reduce the possible harm to environment. Samples with different iodine content in silver-coated silica gel were pretreated by hydration device at 300 °C and then sintered at relatively low temperatures (500, 550 and 600 °C). XRD results show that AgI is mainly chemically fixed in the glass network with some AgI particles being physically wrapped by the glass. Moreover, as the sintering temperature reached to 550 °C, B element crystallized. SEM-EDS results show that Ag and I elements are enriched, while the other elements are evenly distributed. AFM results showed that the sample surface becomes rougher as the iodine content increases in the silver coated silica gel. The FT-IR results show that the structure of the sintered sample is mainly composed of [BiO 3 ], [BiO 6 ] and [BO 3 ]. This study provides a new sintering method by hydration device for the treatment of radioactive iodine waste.

New insights into the immobilisation of Ce(IV) in Portland cement: Properties, hydration, microstructure and occurrence status of Ce

Haosen Ma,Yanjie Tang,Wei Chen,Qiu Li

The immobilisation mechanism of Pu(IV) by Portland cement-based material is not well understood. This study aims to reveal the immobilisation mechanism and occurrence status of Ce(IV) (chemical analogue of Pu(IV)) in Portland cement paste. The addition of Ce(NO 3 ) 4 first slightly retarded then accelerated the early-age hydration of Portland cement , thereby resulting in an increase of compressive strength by 29 %. The main contributor to immobilisation of Ce is Portland cement rather than zeolite . The hydration products were not altered by Ce(NO 3 ) 4 addition, whereas the hydration degree and mean chain length of C-(Al/Ce)-S-H increased. Over 99.99 % of Ce was immobilised by synthesised C-S-H. A analysis of the synthesised C-S-H confirmed the formation of C-Ce-S-H, where Ce tetrahedra took the bridging site of silicate chain of C-Ce-S-H. Nano-crystalline CeO 2 grains were identified, which intermixed with C-Ce-S-H. Approximately 90 % of Ce were immobilised by C-Ce-S-H, and the rest exist as nano-crystalline CeO 2 grains.

Effect of polycarboxylate superplasticizer on the hydration of cubic C3A: Interaction with sulfate ions and correlation to molecular structure

Liheng Zhang,Zichen Lu,Ye Pan,Zhenping Sun

Effect of polycarboxylate superplasticizer (PCE) on cubic C 3 A's (cub-C 3 A) hydration was investigated by using calorimetry, TOC analysis, ICP-OES, etc. With the increased acid-to-ether ratio (A/E) of PCE, a first acceleration and then retardation effect on cub-C 3 A's hydration is found, which is caused by the competitive adsorption between PCE and Ca-Ŝ ion pairs and the correspondingly different effects on cub-C 3 A's dissolution. The increased A/E enhances PCE's adsorption amount. However, PCE's adsorption could either promote or retard cub-C 3 A's hydration depending on PCE's molecular structure. Specifically, PCE with an A/E of 2 could hinder the adsorption of Ca-Ŝ but does not effectively block cub-C 3 A's dissolution as that of Ca-Ŝ ion pairs due to the formed loose adsorption layer. The A/E of 6 further decreases the adsorption of Ca-Ŝ ion pairs and accelerates cub-C 3 A's hydration. Along with the further increased A/E, a compact adsorption layer can be formed, which could hinder cub-C 3 A's dissolution and retard its hydration.

pH-/Temperature-Triggered Gel Transition of Hyperbranched PEI-g-PDMAEMA as a Dual-Responsive Inhibitor for Clay Hydration Control

Ming Zhong,Yang Xiong

To mitigate clay hydration and wellbore instability during deepwater drilling, a pH/temperature dual-responsive graft copolymer, hyperbranched polyethylenimine-g-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (HPEI-g-PDMAEMA), was designed and synthesized via free radical polymerization. Optimized synthesis at an HPEI/DMAEMA mass ratio of 1:2 with 2.4% AIBN at 70 °C for 10 h yielded a grafting ratio of 35.2% and a molecular weight of 84.3 kDa. The copolymer exhibits a tunable lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of approximately 48 °C at pH 8, decreasing with increasing pH due to tertiary amine deprotonation. Zeta potential measurements confirm that the polymer retains a positive charge (+5 mV at pH 8) under weakly alkaline conditions, enabling strong electrostatic anchoring onto negatively charged clay surfaces. Above the LCST, dynamic light scattering reveals a sharp increase in hydrodynamic diameter from ~30 nm to >200 nm, confirming a hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic transition of PDMAEMA segments that drives the formation of a hydrophobically associated gel barrier. This thermally triggered gelation is fully reversible, as evidenced by repeated heating–cooling cycles with almost complete transmittance recovery. The gel barrier drastically reduces water uptake, with inhibition performance against clay swelling at 60 °C being 18.5 percentage points higher than that at 25 °C. Hot-rolling tests demonstrate that with only 1.5 wt% inhibitor, shale recovery reaches 94.1% at 150 °C (8.8 percentage points higher than unmodified HPEI) and remains above 60% even in 20 wt% CaCl 2 or MgCl 2 brines, highlighting exceptional resistance to divalent cations. Water contact angle on treated clay surfaces increases from 18.5° to 52.6°, confirming effective surface hydrophobization. This work provides a molecular-level gel-engineering strategy where pH governs electrostatic anchoring and temperature triggers reversible hydrophobic gelation, enabling on-demand switching of clay wettability and hydration resistance under high-temperature, high-salinity conditions.

Synthesis of a high-performance semi-interpenetrating network SAP and its effects on microstructure and hydration of cementitious materials

Huai Liu,Shuo Wang,Yingda Guan,Heqing Gou,Xinchun Guan

High neutralization and semi-interpenetrating structure increase PVA/AA-SAP water absorption in cement by over five times. • PVA/PAA-SAP can significantly improve the compressive strength and mitigate autogenous shrinkage of cement paste at the same total w/c ratio. • PVA/PAA-SAP releases water slowly, promotes hydration, and has more obvious water enrichment area and internal curing area. This study develops a novel synthesis strategy for superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) tailored for cementitious materials, achieving high-performance properties without the conventional incorporation of non-ionic monomers. A high-performance semi-interpenetrating network (sIPN) SAP (PVA/AA-SAP) composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) was synthesized. The effects of PVA content and neutralization degree on the performance of SAPs were investigated. The water absorption-desorption characteristics and mechanisms in cement pore solution were systematically examined. Results demonstrate that the sIPN structure, coupled with the shielding effect of sodium ions at high neutralization degrees, significantly suppresses the complexation of calcium ions. Consequently, the water absorption of SAPs in cementitious environments is substantially enhanced. Notably, the water absorption of the PVA/AA-SAP in cement filtrate is more than five times higher than that of conventional PAA-SAP. Incorporation of PVA/AA-SAP into cement reduced the hydration heat release during the acceleration stage and maintained higher internal relative humidity compared to conventional PAA-SAP. The sustained water release from PVA/AA-SAP promoted the later hydration, refined the pore structure, and established a distinct internal curing zone. Under the same total water-to-cement (w/c) ratio, adding 0.35% PVA/AA-SAP enhanced the 28-day compressive strength of cement paste by 19.56% and mitigated autogenous shrinkage by 99.8% within 24 h. This design strategy of combining sIPN structure with a high neutralization degree eliminates the demand for acrylamide, improves the compressive strength under the same total w/c ratio and effectively mitigates the autogenous shrinkage of cement pastes.

Unraveling the modulation art of ordered nanomesh-like hydration product on fiber-cement interfaces: Insights from fishing net inspiration

Gang Qiao,Yuyang Zhao,Pan Wang,Dongshuai Hou,Binmeng Chen

The morphology of interface hydration products is crucial as it directly determines the interface mechanics. Inspired by the fishing nets, we employed photo-grafted active copolymer Poly(vinylpyrrolidone-co-acrylic acid) on the inert glass fibers. Providing a template for PVP-co-PAA maintains its regulatory capability in cement paste. For the first time, ordered nanomesh-like hydrated calcium silicate (CSH) with average pore diameter of 30 nm are developed in cement paste. The interface strength and energy absorption increased by 90 % and 253 %, respectively. XPS and SEM revealed that the multi-scale regulation mechanisms originated from the preferential adsorption and stable dispersion of Ca 2+ result from the strong electronegativity and steric hindrance of pyrrolidone rings. CSH nuclei (60 nm) dispersed well on fiber templates, stacked along fiber surfaces, without collapse or tilt, intertwined into nanomesh. Nanomesh-like CSH in cement paste holds significant potentials for the improvement of mechanical properties of fiber-cement interfaces, contributing to construction sustainability.

Mechanisms of montmorillonite-mediated high-temperature catalysis of organic matter under variable hydration states and implications for petroleum geology

Zhao Xiaoyang,Yuan Guanghui,Cao Yingchang,Hao Fang,Liu Keyu,Jin Zihao,Fu Xiaohan,Shao Fulin

Clay minerals play a crucial role in catalyzing kerogen to form hydrocarbons, significantly influencing petroleum system evolution. Montmorillonite (MT) dehydrates upon heating; however, the catalytic mechanisms governing the thermal decomposition of organic matter at different dehydration levels remain unclear. Additionally, the mechanism by which external water suppresses MT’s catalytic efficiency remains debated. To resolve this issue, this study conducted pyrolysis simulation experiments (340 °C, 10 days) with various combinations of octadecanoic acid (OA), water, hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution, MT, dehydrated-MT, and illite. We integrated mineral/organic transformation analyses (XRD/FTIR/SSNMR/SEM), temperature-dependent characterization of solid acid sites (NH 3 -TPD/FTIR), and quantitative product measurements (GC/GC-MS) to elucidate how clay-bound water and external water differentially regulate organic-matter cracking pathways. The results suggest that clay-bound water controls reaction pathways by tuning both the type (Brønsted vs. Lewis) and density of solid acid sites. External water inhibits catalytic efficiency by reducing direct contact between organic matter and solid acid sites. Compared with untreated MT, 150 °C-dehydrated MT-OA system exhibited strong interlayer water polarization, which increased Brønsted acid site density and enhanced the carbonium-ion mechanism, thereby promoting isoalkane production. In contrast, 250 °C-dehydrated MT-OA system, where interlayer water was nearly eliminated, had fewer Brønsted acid sites but greater exposure of Lewis acid sites, facilitating decarboxylation and increasing CO 2 production. In hydrous systems, the addition of HCl solution did not enhance the carbonium-ion mechanism compared to the hydrous system with only water, indicating that only protons bound to solid acid sites, rather than liquid H + in water, can trigger the carbonium-ion reaction. This shows that the catalysis of organic-matter cracking by clay minerals such as MT is fundamentally an interfacial chemical process that requires direct mineral-organic contact; the presence of external water reduces catalytic efficiency primarily by physically separating OA from MT and hindering that contact. This study elucidates the controlling mechanisms of MT-catalyzed thermal cracking under different water conditions and deepens our understanding of hydrocarbon-generation pathways during kerogen maturation in sedimentary basins.

Mechano-adaptive microgel-integrated (MA-MI) polycarbonate polyurethane composites with superior load-bearing and self-replenishing hydration lubrication performance

Bingbing Liu,Xiaoduo Zhao,Yunsong Kong,Hao-zhe Xu,Weiyi Zhao,Jiale Liu,Yong-min Liang,Hao Liu,Jianzhang Wang,Shuanhong Ma,Feng Zhou

MA-MI strategy is proposed to fabricate PCU composites. • Dynamic hydrogen bonding and microgels synergistically enable self-adaptive lubrication. • PCU/MG shows excellent durability under long-term and high-load sliding. Polymeric elastomers are widely used in biomedical devices and implants. However, their inherent surface hydrophobicity hinders the formation of stable lubricating films in aqueous environments, leading to severe friction and wear. Here, we present a mechano-adaptive and microgel-integrated (MA-MI) strategy for fabricating polycarbonate polyurethane (PCU) composites (PCU/MG) that combine high load-bearing capacity with effective hydration lubrication. By incorporating controlled amounts of microgels into a dynamic hydrogen-bonded matrix, the mechanical properties and wettability are simultaneously tuned. Cyclic compression tests show that the PCU/MG-1:1 composite retains nearly 100% of its original strength and over 85% of its energy dissipation capacity after 200 cycles. Under aqueous sliding, friction-induced exposure of embedded microgels triggers localized hydration, generating a self-replenishing hydration layer and rolling lubrication components in situ. As a result, the composite exhibits low friction, load-adaptive lubricity, and stable lubrication across a wide range of aqueous environments. The PCU/MG-1:1 composite achieves an over 80% reduction in steady-state wear rate after 10,000 sliding cycles compared with short-term tests. This MA-MI strategy overcomes the longstanding trade-off between load-bearing capacity and surface lubricity in conventional polymeric elastomers, providing a promising route toward durable self-lubricating biomedical materials.
