Lignin was used herein to prepare chemical grouting materials as replacements for petroleum-based epoxy precursors. Demethylation, phenolation, and hydroxymethylation were conducted and the products were characterized via FT-IR, 1 H NMR, and GPC. A quantitative NMR method was used to study the precise changes in the functional group composition. Raw lignin (RL), demethylated lignin (DML), phenolated lignin (PHL), and hydroxymethylated lignin (HML) were respectively reacted with epichlorohydrin to synthesize various lignin epoxy resin (LEP), including raw lignin epoxy resin (RLEP), demethylated lignin epoxy resin (DMLEP), phenolated lignin epoxy resin (PHLEP), and hydroxymethylated lignin epoxy resin (HMLEP). With LEP as feedstocks, new grouting materials were prepared and the effects of the RLEP content and the LEP variants were investigated. The results demonstrated that the prepared lignin epoxy grouting resin had outstanding viscosity and mechanical properties with RLEP content up to 16%, and this performance greatly exceeded the industry standard. DMLEP, PHLEP, and HMLEP were able to provide better tensile properties, heat-resistance, chemical-resistance and curing performance compared with that achieved with RLEP. Overall, lignin has displayed great potential in replacing petroleum-based materials for the preparation of high-performance chemical grouting materials.

Background The effective valorization of lignin and carbohydrates in lignocellulose matrix under the concept of biorefinery is a primary strategy to produce sustainable chemicals and fuels. Based on the reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF), lignin in lignocelluloses can be depolymerized into viscous oils, while the highly delignified pulps with high polysaccharides retention can be transformed into various chemicals. Results A biorefinery paradigm for sequentially valorization of the main components in poplar sawdust was constructed. In this process, the well-defined low-molecular-weight phenols and bioethanol were co-generated by tandem chemo-catalysis in the RCF stage and bio-catalysis in fermentation stage. In the RCF stage, hydrogen transfer reactions were conducted in one-pot process using Raney Ni as catalyst, while the isopropanol (2-PrOH) in the initial liquor was served as a hydrogen donor and the solvent for lignin dissolution. Results indicated the proportion of the 2-PrOH in the initial liquor of RCF influenced the chemical constitution and yield of the lignin oil, which also affected the characteristics of the pulps and the following bioethanol production. A 67.48 ± 0.44% delignification with 20.65 ± 0.31% of monolignols yield were realized when the 2-PrOH:H 2 O ratio in initial liquor was 7:3 (6.67 wt% of the catalyst loading, 200 °C for 3 h). The RCF pulp had higher carbohydrates retention (57.96 ± 2.78 wt%), which was converted to 21.61 ± 0.62 g/L of bioethanol with a yield of 0.429 ± 0.010 g/g in fermentation using an engineered S. cerevisiae strain. Based on the mass balance analysis, 104.4 g of ethanol and 206.5 g of lignin oil can be produced from 1000 g of the raw poplar sawdust. Conclusions The main chemical components in poplar sawdust can be effectively transformed into lignin oil and bioethanol. The attractive results from the biorefinery process exhibit great promise for the production of valuable biofuels and chemicals from abundant lignocellulosic materials.

In this study, the Fenton oxidized lignin was prepared to investigate the effect of Fenton oxidation modification on the activity of lignin immobilized β-glucosidase (β-GL). The results demonstrated that Fenton oxidation could significantly improve the activity and stability of immobilized β-GL. This is because the Fenton oxidation increased the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic forces between lignin and β-GL, resulting in increased lignin adsorption onto β-GL. The Fenton oxidation also changed the chemical structure of lignin, altering the lignin-β-GL binding site and reducing the negative effect of lignin on the β-GL catalytic domain . This research will improve understanding of the effect of Fenton lignin oxidation on immobilized β-GL activity and expand the use of lignin in enzyme immobilization .

Lignin, commonly treated as a waste from industrial or agricultural/forestry activities, can be used as a sustainable alternative of fossil phenol to fabricate lignin-based epoxy resins. In this study, the cured samples of lignin-based epoxy resins were prepared after curing process, and their combustion behaviors were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis coupled with Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR) and cone calorimeter test. Results showed that these as-prepared epoxy thermosets (containing 0%, 5%, and 10% lignin) contained a higher LOI (limited oxygen index) value compared to others commercial resins reported in previous literature. Furthermore, they were all self-extinguishing materials during the first burning process, which was primarily contributed to their high-compactness crosslinking structure. Lignin addition would cause a negative effect on the thermomechanical properties of cured samples due to the decrease of crosslinking density, while better excellent gaseous inhibition and charring capacity can be obtained after lignin addition. This study presented an effective strategy to incorporate lignin into epoxy resin system via chemical crosslinking using glyoxal in place of formaldehyde as a green crosslinking agent to improve the combustion behaviors via reducing smoke releasing and increasing char formation, which was also beneficial for lignin valorization.

Converting lignin into high value-added products is essential to reduce our dependence on petroleum resources and protect our environment. In this work, TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 are loaded in the lignin-derived carbon nanofibers (LCNFs) and an efficient LCNFs-based photocatalytic material (TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 @LCNFs) is developed. The spinnability of lignin solution, the chemical structure and morphology of the LCNFs, and the catalytic degradation property of the TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 @LCNFs for Rhodamine B (RhB) are systematically investigated. The TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 @LCNFs achieve a 92.76 % degradation rate of RhB under UV–vis irradiation, which is close to or higher than most reported carbon fiber-based photocatalysts. The excellent degradation property of the photocatalysts can be ascribed to the synergy of TiO 2 and g-C 3 N 4 , which improves the excitation efficiency of electron and hole, and prolongs the lifetime of electron-hole pairs. We envision that our work will provide some guidance for the development of efficient photocatalysts based on biomass-derived fiber materials.

As a natural renewable biomass resource with abundant reserves, lignin has broad prospects in the preparation of lignin-based carbon fibers and lignin-based carbon nanospheres . However, it remains a challenge to prepare carbon nanotubes using lignin as a carbon source. Herein, a feasible method for the preparation of lignin-based carbon nanotubes ( L -CNTs) using lignin as the carbon source based on mobile chemical vapor deposition is proposed. First, lignin-based micelles were used as a soft template to prepare a catalyst, and then L -CNTs were synthesized from gaseous products generated by lignin pyrolysis. The results reflected the important roles of the catalyst preparation process, the concentration of catalyst precursor, and the synthesis temperature on the morphologies and structures of the L -CNTs. By adjusting the reaction conditions, L -CNTs with diameters ranging from 10 to 110 nm and lengths ranging from 1 to 6 µm were obtained. The synthesized L -CNTs were mainly multi-walled carbon nanotubes, of which the crystal layer spacing was 0.35 nm, with a good graphitization degree and thermal stability. This synthesis strategy will provide a new method for the high-value utilization of lignin.

Lignin is a promising feedstock for renewable fuels and chemicals due to its aromatic skeleton and natural abundance. Lignin can be converted to diverse aromatic monomers as well as dicarboxylic acids depending on the applied conversion technologies. Despite its great potential, its native and processing-induced heterogeneity and complexity limit the conversion efficiency and product selectivity. In this study, magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) nanoparticle–peracetic acid (PAA) has been investigated as an efficient catalyst–oxidant incorporation for catalytic oxidative depolymerization of lignin under mild conditions. Typically, the increase in processing severity can enhance the lignin conversion while it results in the further decomposition of aromatic compounds to dicarboxylic acids. However, in this study, the incorporation of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles and PAA not only enhanced the total product yield but also improved the selectivity of aromatic monomers. The oxidative depolymerization system using the catalyst–oxidant combination resulted in 46 wt % of total oil product with a 61% selectivity of aromatic monomers under mild temperature (90 °C). In addition, this combination catalyst showed relatively good cycling stability based on the total product yield after recycling five times via magnetic separation. Overall, MgFe2O4 nanoparticles play an important role as a co-catalyst with a PAA oxidant in the oxidative conversion of lignin with an enhanced conversion efficiency and recyclability, and it will facilitate the valorization of lignin in future bio-based fuels and chemicals.

Graphical Lignin-loaded decomposable polymers were successfully synthesized in this study using dicyclopentadiene as monomers through a rapid and practical frontal polymerization (FP) method. This work has made a facile and accessible FP method available for the construction of eco-friendly, versatile decomposable polymers, which exhibit significant potential in the field of water purification Rapid population growth and water contamination have led to a shortage of freshwater, making it crucial to find sustainable methods for water purification. Solar-powered evaporation is an eco-friendly approach that uses solar energy to facilitate water evaporation and separate it from contaminants. Recent studies have focused on the development of solar absorber systems that incorporate photo-thermal materials into a porous structure to enhance the efficiency of solar-to-thermal conversion and elevate water evaporation capacities. However, there is a lack of studies on simple and quick fabrication methods for solar absorber materials that minimize storage constraints in real-world applications. Frontal polymerization (FP) technology is a promising solution that offers straightforward operation, minimal energy consumption, and rapid reaction for porous polymers. In this study, a decomposable and photo-thermal composite polymer(LI/(P(DCPD- co -DTD))) is synthesized using FMORP, incorporating lignin fillers to improve the light absorption capacity and photothermal performance beneficial for water purification. The water evaporation rate can reach as high as 1.63 kg m −2 h −1 . This composite polymer is expected to promote solar-driven water purification in practical applications.

Lignin is the most abundant component in archaeological waterlogged wood, making it a potential consolidant with high compatibility for historical wood conservation. However, its consolidation effect is limited by its low penetration into the wood. In this study, modified lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) were proposed for the first time as conservation materials for waterlogged archaeological wood. Two modified LNPs were prepared with low molecular weight, small size, and high solubility in ethylene glycol (EG) for consolidating waterlogged wood samples. These nanoparticles, hydrophilic aminated LNPs (ALNPs) and hydrophobic esterified LNPs (MALNPs), greatly improved the consolidation effect of waterlogged wood samples compared to LNPs. This was demonstrated by measuring their physical properties, dimensional stability, and mechanical properties. The surface color change was almost within the acceptable range for the human eye. We also discussed two different reinforcement mechanisms of ALNPs and MALNPs. ALNPs can form hydrogen bonds with hemicellulose/cellulose in the wood to strengthen the fragile wood cell wall, while MALNPs can fill the wood cell lumen to support the cell wall and prevent deformation during drying. Our work provides an approach of using biomaterials as consolidants for archaeological waterlogged wood and expands the use of lignin in this field.

Ni/CeO 2 with medium-strong acidity was prepared by in - situ carbon templating (ISCT) and reduction with H 2 . Oxydibenzene (ODB) and benzyloxybenzene (BOB) were used as lignin-related model compounds (LRMCs). Over Ni/CeO 2 , ODB was completely converted into cyclohexane ( CH I ) under initial hydrogen pressure (IHP) of 2 MPa at 160 °C for 2 h and complete conversion of BOB to CH I and methylcyclohexane (MCH) was achieved under IHP of 2 MPa at 120 °C for 1.5 h. H … H transfer to the benzene rings (BRs) in the LRMCs and phenol from BOB hydrocracking results in the BR hydrogenation, while H + transfer to the oxygen atom in BOB, hydrogenated ODB, and BOB-derived cyclohexanol ( CH II ) leads to the >CH-O- bond cleavage and subsequent dehydration of the resulting protonated CH II (PCH II ) . In addition, Ni/CeO 2 exhibits an excellent reusability.

Tandem strategy for lignin utilization with photocatalytic preoxidation and ultrasonic cavitation depolymerization was proposed. Cornstalk residual lignin from industrial bioethanol process was first photocatalytically preoxidized under visible light by g -C 3 N 4 and WO 3 / g -C 3 N 4 / h -BN (WCB) photocatalysts respectively, then obtained lignin samples were characterized to confirm the preoxidation with raw lignin as a blank. During photocatalytic preoxidation, benzyl hydroxyls in lignin was transformed to carbonyls, but a certain degree of lignin degradation and condensation was observed. In comparison, WCB-catalyzed photopreoxidation was more effective. Thereafter, lignin depolymerization was achieved by ultrasonic cavitation-assisted ethanololysis under optimal conditions. Compared with the mere ultrasonic cavitation depolymerization of pristine lignin, WCB-induced photocatalytic preoxidation improved the conversion rate by 14%, the light-oil yield by 26%, and the phenolic monomer yield by 35%. In general, the reported tandem method worked very well for the enhancement of lignin depolymerization and provided a new idea for the development of lignin valorization.

Bimetallic catalyst gets increasing attention for the lignin valorization due to its outstanding catalytic activity. Herein, the non-noble bimetallic catalyst NiCo/C was proposed to conduct the hydrogenolysis of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin. 20.8 wt% yield of monomer products and 94.6% lignin liquefaction degree were obtained at the temperature of 260 °C, which was superior to the catalytic performances of Ni/C and Co/C catalysts. A series of catalyst characterizations were conducted to reveal the mechanism of bimetallic catalysis, including BET, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS and H 2 -TPD methods. Results showed that the synergistic effect between Ni and Co species was the main reason for its high catalytic activity, which resulted in a superior hydrogen transformation ability and hydrogenolysis activity. GC–MS, GPC, elemental analysis and FT-IR measurements were also used to investigate the hydrogenolysis products and the results also confirmed the superiority of bimetallic NiCo catalyst resulted from synergistic effect of Ni and Co.
