A bio-based intumescent flame retardant (denoted as PIMEPA@ATH) was synthesized via metal chelation using water as the media. The PIMEPA@ATH complex aggregations was used to improve the flame retardancy of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) by synergistic combination of piperazine-melamine phytate complex (denoted as PIMEPA) and aluminum hydroxide (ATH). During combustion, the in-situ growth of crystalline aluminum metaphosphate arising from PIMEPA@ATH helped to cast more compact protective barriers containing metal ions and aromatic rings. The results showed that the EVA sample containing 30 wt% PIMEPA@ATH achieved the UL-94 V0 rating without dripping in the vertical burning test and a reduction of 79% in peak heat release rate and 58% reduced peak smoke production rate in the cone calorimeter test. Moreover, the tensile properties of EVA/PIMEPA@ATH were improved compared with the EVA/PIMEPA control. Better char formation and improved interfacial adhesion were primarily responsible for the enhancements in flame retardancy and mechanical performance. This work demonstrated the flame-retardant mechanism of PIMEPA@ATH, and explored a facile and green “chelate-mediated” strategy for synthesis of bio-based and ATH chelate-mediated intumescent flame retardant.

Phytic acid (PA) plays different roles in various fields of study, yet current analytical methods for PA detection are still unsatisfactory. A novel method has been presented for the determination of PA in beverages, based on complete methylation in combination with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. By treatment with (trimethylsilyl) diazomethane, all the polybasic acid groups in PA were converted to the corresponding ester, and thus the corresponding derivative was easily analyzed by LC-MS. The addition of ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) to the derivative solution improved the sensitivity and the reproducibility in the PA analysis. Under optimized parameters, the linear range of the PA detection was 0.5–100 μg/L, the limit of detection was 0.075 μg/L, the limit of quantitation was 0.25 μg/L, and the recovery range was 81.3–119.7 %. The PA content was determined for 13 commercially available beverage samples, and experimental results showed that this method provided a practical and reliable method for the detection of PA across diverse beverage matrices.

Three-dimensional (3D) LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs composite has been prepared using phytic acid as the phosphorus source by a simple solvothermal method combined with freeze drying under vacuum. The relationships between the phase structures, the morphologies and electrochemical performance characteristics of the as-prepared samples are studied using a series of characterization methods. It is found that the MWCNTs wrap around the LiFePO 4 particles to form a 3D network because of the reactions between the special functional groups of the phytic acid with Fe 2+ and –C O or –COOH on the surface of the functionalized MWCNTs, resulting in the improvement of conductivity and the electron and ion transport. Due to these merits of MWCNTs and phytic acid, the LiFePO 4 @MWCNTs exhibits good electrochemical performance with high initial discharge capacities of 152.7, 149.6 and 138.8 mAh g −1 at 1, 2 and 5C, respectively. Even at 10C, it still delivers a capacity of 117.5 mAh g −1 .

Nanostructure engineering of heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts can greatly enhance their electrocatalytic activity by increasing the accessible active sites and beneficial physical properties (e.g., surface area, conductivity, etc.). Herein, we successfully constructed ultra-thin N,P co-doped carbon (NPC) on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) by using phytic acid (PA) as a “guide”. The rich phosphate groups in PA allow them to be covalently modified on the surface of CNT by the condensation reaction and to further attract large aniline monomers through acid–base interactions, resulting in the uniform and tight bonding between polyaniline and CNT after the polymerization process. During the subsequent thermal reaction, PA also serves as a self-sacrificial dopant for the formation of ultra-thin NPC and the doping amount of P in NPC can be easily adjusted by changing the amount of PA. Due to the abundance of active sites, large electrochemically active surface area and rapid electron transfer, the developed CNT@NPC presents remarkable electrocatalytic activities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with an overpotential of 167, 440 and 304 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in acidic, neutral, and alkaline electrolytes, respectively. In particular, its acidic HER activity exceeds that of most reported metal-free electrocatalysts and is comparable to that of some excellent transition metal-based catalysts. The approach proposed here is of potential importance for the preparation of ideal heteroatom-doped carbon/nanocarbon composites for use in a variety of future energy conversion systems.

In this work, a novel CF@NiFe2O4 composite coated with phytic acid-doped polyaniline (CF@NiFe2O4@p-PANI) was facilely synthesized. First, a typical solvothermal reaction was applied to obtain the CF@NiFe2O4 composite, and then the phytic acid-doped polyaniline was grown in situ on the surface of the CF@NiFe2O4 composite. The morphological structure, chemical composition, and surface functional group distribution of this hybrid were systematically evaluated. The magnetic saturation (Ms) value of the hybrid is 29.9 emu g−1, which represents an improvement in the magnetic loss. According to its reflection loss curve, the hybrid exhibits a superior EM wave absorption capacity, with a minimum reflection loss value and effective absorbing bandwidth of −46 dB when the sample thickness is 2.9 mm, and an effective absorption bandwidth of 5 GHz when the sample thickness is 1.5 mm. The excellent performance of this hybrid can mainly be attributed to its ideal matching of magnetic loss and dielectric loss, interfacial polarizations, eddy current loss and interface relaxation. This new material has the potential to be a superior electromagnetic wave absorber or applied as a functional filler to modify resin matrices.

Uranyl ion-imprinted polymers (U(VI)-IIPs) were successfully prepared by combining phytic acid as the functional monomer, uranyl ion (UO 2 2+ ) as the template, and tetraethyl silicate (TEOS) as the cross-linker with the marine facultative fungus Fusarium sp. #ZZF51 addicted to U (VI) mycelium through the ion-imprinted sol–gel method. Single-factor experiments were performed to optimize the preparation conditions and the prepared materials were better characterized with FTIR, SEM and BET meter. The optimum adsorption conditions were explored by single-factor experiments and BBD response surface method in detail. The adsorption–desorption recycling and adsorption selectivity experiments revealed that U(VI)-IIPs had a good stability and selectivity. The U (VI) adsorption process of U(VI)-IIPs was better described by the pseudo-second order kinetic equation and Langmuir isotherm model.

In this work, Yb3+-immobilized hydrophilic phytic-acid-coated magnetic nanocomposites were prepared through a facile route and used to selectively separatrf bovine hemoglobin. Hydrophilic phytic acid (PA) was coated onto the magnetic Fe3O4-PEI via electrostatic interactions, followed by finally chelating with Yb3+ ions, which could produce specific protein binding sites at room temperature in water, and complex instrumentation was not necessary. The performance of as-prepared hybrids (Fe3O4-PEI-PA-Yb3+) was assessed by selectively isolating bovine hemoglobin (BHb). The obtained maximum binding capacity was 347.3 mg g–1. The retained BHb could be eluted under simple elution via using 0.1 M of Na2CO3, giving a recovery of 83%. Moreover, the generation of nanocomposites was demonstrated. In addition, the PA and PEI could improve the hydrophilicity of nanoparticles and further reduce the nonspecific adsorption. Therefore, such nanocomposites were successfully employed to selectively bind and separate BHb from bovine serum as verified by SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS analysis, providing a new perspective for the isolation of heme proteins in proteomics.

Biodegradable, a new revolutionary concept, is shaping the future design of biomedical implants that need to serve only as a temporary scaffold. Magnesium appears to be the most promising biodegradable metal, but challenges remain in its corrosion-controlling and uncertain biocompatibility. In this work, we employ chemical conversion and alternating dip-coating methods to anchor and deposit an Mg ion-integrated phytic acid (Mg-PA) coating on Mg, which is supposed to function both corrosion-controlling and osteo-compatible. It was ascertained that PA molecules were covalently immobilized on a chemically converted Mg(OH)2 base layer, and more PA molecules were deposited subsequently via chelating reactions with the help of additive Mg ions. The covalent immobilization and the Mg ion-supported chelating deposition contribute to a dense and homogeneous protective Mg-PA coating, which guarantees an improved corrosion resistance as well as a reduced degradation rate. Moreover, the Mg-PA coating performed osteo-compatible to promote not only bioactivity of bonelike apatite precipitation, but also induced osteoblast cells adhesion and proliferation. This is ascribed to its nature of PA molecule and the biocompatible Mg ion, both of which mimic partly the compositional structure of bone. Our magnesium ion-integrated PA-coated Mg might bode well for the future of biodegradable bone implant application.

Background Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of antidepressants is essential for monitoring patient medication to avoid drug toxicity, complications, or nonadherence. Chromatographic techniques with high sensitivity and reproducibility are the main detection method for antidepressants. Effective pretreatment of biological sample processes is necessary prior to instrumental analysis. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has received much attention for its advantages of simple operation, rapidity, cost-effectiveness and low organic solvent consumption. Therefore, the development of a suitable and green magnetic sorbent for the detection of antidepressants in plasma and urine is apparently necessary. (88) Results A magnetic phytic acid-modified kapok fiber biochar sorbent (Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC) was successfully synthesized by pyrolytic impregnation and physical milling methods. Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC exhibited a large specific surface area (214 m 2 g −1 ) and a rich pore structure (5–10 nm). The extraction equilibrium, using 10 mg Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC, can be completed in about 1 min. The density functional theory (DFT) results showed that the adsorption mechanism of Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC on the six antidepressants mainly included electrostatic interactions, van der Waals interactions, π-π interactions and weak hydrogen bonding. Examination using the greenness assessment tools showed that the developed method exhibited excellent greenness. By combining with liquid chromatography-ultraviolet (LC-UV), a quantitative method with good linearity (R 2 > 0.993) and relative recoveries (92.4–107.7%) and negligible matrix effect (−11.5–6.0%) was developed. The Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC successfully detected six antidepressants in plasma and urine samples, requiring no pH adjustment with buffer salts. (142) Significance The environmental sustainability of the proposed methods was affirmed by six greenness evaluation tools, all indicating exceptional eco-friendliness. The Fe 3 O 4 /PAKFBC demonstrated outstanding greenness in both its creation and analytical application, proving highly effective in real sample applications and showcasing potential for broader use. This study contributes to a deeper and broader understanding of the microscopic adsorption mechanism, which can help in the optimization and development of more green sorbents. (69).

To broaden the applications of wood, it is necessary to prepare flame-retardant coatings that can protect wood substrates during combustion. In this study, a bio-based, intumescent, flame-retardant phytic acid–melamine polyelectrolyte (PM) was prepared using phosphorus-rich biomass phytic acid and nitrogen-rich melamine as raw materials through an ion crosslinking reaction. Subsequently, a series of bio-based, flame-retardant wood coatings were prepared by optimizing the structure of urea–formaldehyde resin with the addition of melamine, sodium lignosulfonate, and PM as a flame-retardant curing agent. Woods coated with PM-containing coatings displayed significantly improved flame-retardant performances in comparison to uncoated woods. For PM-cured woods, the measured values of total heat release and total smoke production were 91.51% and 57.80% lower, respectively, compared with those of uncoated wood. Furthermore, the fire growth index decreased by 97.32%, indicating a lower fire hazard. This increase in flame retardancy and smoke suppression performance is due to the dense expanded carbon layer formed during the combustion of the coating, which isolates oxygen and heat. In addition, the mechanical properties of the flame-retardant coatings cured with PM are similar to those cured with a commercial curing agent, NH4Cl. In addition, the prepared flame-retardant coating can also stain the wood. This study proves the excellent flame-retarding and curing effect of ammonium phytate in urea–formaldehyde resin coatings and provides a new approach for the application of bio-based flame retardants in wood coatings.

Recent research has focused on developing environmentally friendly flame-retardant coatings to improve the fire resistance of wood. In this study, phytic acid–guanazole (PG), a dual-functional compound synthesized through an ionic reaction between phytic acid and guanazole, was added to KH550-modified urea–formaldehyde resin (KUF) as both a curing agent and flame retardant. The−PO43−groups from phytic acid act as an acid source to accelerate char formation during combustion, while the −NH2groups introduced by guanazole release non-combustible gases to dilute oxygen in the air, synergistically enhancing flame retardancy. Additionally, the hygroscopic−PO43−groups absorb free water in the resin, reducing the curing temperature and accelerating coating solidification. The KH550 coupling agent improves compatibility between KUF and PG while introducing silicon, which forms SiO2during combustion to strengthen the char layer and further enhance flame resistance. Evaluations showed that PG outperforms conventional tannic acid (TA) in curing efficiency and fire resistance. Comprehensive analyses, including Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), vertical flame tests, and cone calorimetry, confirmed PG’s dual functionality. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy revealed that PG-modified coatings form denser post-combustion char layers, directly linked to improved fire resistance. As a multifunctional additive, PG eliminates the need for separate curing agents and utilizes bio-based phytic acid, offering cost-effective and sustainable advantages for industrial applications.

Tin-based anodes exhibit high capacities, rendering them suitable for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, their practical use is hindered by their extreme swelling and rapid fading. Moreover, traditional synthesis methods for SnP 2 O 7 , which is a promising tin-based system, involve several limitations such as toxic solvents, complex procedure, high energy consumption, and hazardous phosphorus reagents. Herein, we overcame these limitations using a simple method involving a deep eutectic solvent based on polyethylene glycol and SnCl 4 ·5 H 2 O. Phytic acid serves as a benign phosphorus source and a chelating agent that locks Sn 2 + /Sn 4+ into a rigid Sn–O–P scaffold. The special properties of the material mitigate the structural damage caused by lithium-ion deintercalation during charging and discharging. SnP 2 O 7 /C retains 729 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 (retention = 99.4 %) and 515 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 , considerably surpassing those of SnO 2 /C and SSS/C(Sn 3 (PO 4 ) 2 / SnP 2 O 7 / SnO 2 ). The proposed synthesis method is cost-effective, scalable, and green. Moreover, the main mechanism of this route, i.e., phytic acid chelation, offers a long-lasting solution to the long-standing problems of tin-based anode materials for LIBs.
