Developing sulfur-containing one-dimensional (1D) nanocatalysts with high active surface area and stability remains a significant challenge for achieving high-performance oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. In this study, a novel 1D FeS-Ni 3 S 2 nanorod array covered with interwoven nanosheets was synthesized on nickel foam (NF) using a solvothermal process. A rigid segment-containing polysulfide (Poly(S- r -DIB)) was employed as a sulfur source and in situ intercalator, enabling efficient sulfidation and structural formation. The resulting FeS-Ni 3 S 2 /NF nanocatalyst demonstrated outstanding OER performance, achieving a low overpotential of 215 mV at 50 mA cm - ² and a low Tafel slope of 51 mV dec - ¹ . The catalyst exhibited remarkable stability, retaining over 85 % of its original activity after prolonged testing. Furthermore, in a two-electrode configuration, the catalyst reached a current density of 20 mA cm - ² at a low applied voltage of 1.41 V. This work introduces a new approach for fabricating sulfur-containing 1D nanomaterials with superior catalytic activity, paving the way for advancements in water splitting and sustainable hydrogen energy production.

Development of efficient, low-cost, and bifunctional catalysts based on ultrathin heterostructures for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is critical for advancing overall water splitting. In this study, we design a simple intercalation-sulfidation strategy by rigid segment-containing Polysulfide as a sulfur source and in-situ intercalation for the construction of the metastable 1 T'-2H'-phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures (1 T'-2H'-Mo-Ni 3 S 2 ). It is found that the Polysulfides with rigid segments can be controlled by various monomers reacted with reverse sulfurization reactions between various monomers and elemental sulfur, such as Poly (sulfur-random-1,3-Benzenedithiol), Poly (sulfur-random-1,4-Benzenedithiol), and Poly (sulfur-random-4,4′-Biphenyldithiol), which can be used to assist in the synthesis process of metastable. Attributing to favorable synergy interaction in composition and structure, the resultant 1 T'-2H' phase Mo-Ni 3 S 2 heterostructures shows the superior performances toward OER and water splitting in alkaline medium. The resultant Mo-Ni 3 S 2 -BDP needs only an overpotential of 103 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and for OER. For HER, it demonstrates a low overpotential of 136 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and a relatively low cell voltage of 1.672 V for water splitting. The present provides a new strategy to design and develop the phase engineering of other materials with various Polymorphs.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are of great interest due to their high theoretical energy density and potentially low cost. However, two of the key issues hindering their commercialization are the polysulfide shuttling and Li-dendrite growth, which result in severe capacity decay and serious safety hazards. Herein, liquid-phase delaminated birnessite (HxMnO2+x) nanosheets along with graphene and carbon nanotubes are utilized for the first time to create an “electronegative” coating layer for Li–S batteries to suppress the polysulfide shuttling and Li-dendrite growth. The as-prepared coating layer enables stable cycling of the Li–S battery with a low capacity decay rate of 0.04% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1C. In addition, a Li-symmetrical cell with the coating layer shows suppressed dendrite growth even after being cycled over 1000 hours at 1 mA cm−2. This excellent performance is ascribed, in part, to the synergistic effect of the chemical and electrostatic interactions among polysulfides, Li ions, and [MnO2+x]x− ions, resulting in a homogeneous Li-ion flux distribution and a mitigated polysulfide shuttling. The proposed concept of an “electronegative” bifunctional coating layer illustrates a simple and effective way to develop highly stable and safe Li–S batteries.

Transition metals with 3d unoccupied orbitals have superior catalytic activity, but inherent high spin suppresses their adsorption capability, leading to sluggish polysulfide conversion kinetics for Li–S batteries. Herein, we provide Fe–O–Si bridge bonds to manipulate eg filling and induce a high-to-medium spin transition of Fe3+ sites, which enhances polysulfide adsorption and facilitates sulfur redox reaction kinetics. The resultant cathodes exhibit outstanding performances under high sulfur loading, which can deliver a high battery specific energy of 1061 mA h·g–1 even after 100 cycles in Li–S pouch batteries. This work provides new insights into the kinetic and multi-step conversion mechanism of the sulfur redox reaction process, helping in the understanding and design of spin-dependent catalysts.

The high activation barriers for sodium polysulfide conversion during the charge–discharge processes of room-temperature sodium–sulfur batteries lead to sluggish reaction kinetics, thereby resulting in limited practical specific capacities. This simultaneously triggers the shuttle effect, leading to a rapid decay in specific capacity. In this study, we propose a hierarchical (crystalline-atomic) catalytic strategy, where the hierarchical catalyst features both manganese oxide crystalline sites and Mn single-atom sites. The two catalytic sites selectively anchor the sulfur and metal moieties of sodium polysulfides, respectively, exerting a “tearing” effect that weakens the chemical bonds and lowers the activation energy, thereby accelerating the polysulfide conversion. The cathode material synthesized using this method retains a specific capacity of 309 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at a current density of 2C, indicating that hierarchical parallel catalysis can effectively mitigate the shuttle effect and accelerate the reaction kinetics. Therefore, this work demonstrates the practical potential of hierarchical parallel catalysis in metal-sulfur batteries and provides a new approach for catalyst design in this domain.

Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are promising for next-generation storage, but their practical deployment is critically hindered by the polysulfide shuttle effect, the intrinsic low conductivity of sulfur, and severe volume expansion during cycling. In the study, the CNT-ZnSe@NC-CoSe 2 composite was fabricated through high-temperature selenization of a co-precipitated CNT-ZIF8 precursor that had been coated with polydopamine and chelated with Co 2+ ions. The ZnSe/CoSe 2 heterojunctions accelerate LiPS conversion and guide uniform Li 2 S deposition. An N-doped carbon shell buffers volume expansion and boosts catalysis, while interconnected CNTs form a robust 3D conductive network for rapid transport. This synergistic architecture suppresses the shuttle effect, ensuring stable long-term cycling for advanced lithium-sulfur batteries. Consequently, the S/CNT–ZnSe@NC–CoSe 2 cathode delivers an initial capacity of 1063.1 mAh g −1 at 0.1C and retains 355.2 mAh g −1 at 3C. Notably, it maintains a stable capacity of 577.2 mAh g −1 after 200 cycles. This work presents a heterostructure with enhanced polysulfide anchoring and efficient electron transport, paving the way for the development of high-performance lithium–sulfur batteries.

High-energy-density secondary batteries are required for many applications such as electric vehicles. Lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries are receiving broad attention because of their high theoretical energy density. However, the large volume change of sulfur during cycling, poor conductivity, and the shuttle effect of sulfides severely restrict the Li-storage performance of Li-S batteries. Herein, we present a novel core–shell nanocomposite consisting of a sulfur core and a hydrogel polypyrrole (PPy) shell, enabling an ultra-high sulfur content of about 98.4% within the composite, which greatly exceeds many other conventional composites obtained by coating sulfur onto some hosts. In addition, the void inside the core–shell structure effectively accommodates the volume change; the conductive PPy shell improves the conductivity of the composite; and PPy is able to adsorb polysulfides, suppressing the shuttle effect. After cycling for 200 cycles, the prepared S@void@PPy composite retains a stable capacity of 650 mAh g−1, which is higher than the bare sulfur particles. The composite also exhibits a fast Li ion diffusion coefficient. Furthermore, the density functional theory calculations show the PPy shell is able to adsorb polysulfides efficiently, with a large adsorption energy and charge density transfer.

Lithium-sulfur battery is perceived as one promising next generation rechargeable battery system, in view of its high theoretical specific capacity and energy density . However, the “shuttle effect” of polysulfides and the uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites significantly obstruct its practical application. Herein, a bifunctional separator with double-sided modification is developed to simultaneously resolve these issues, which is constructed by growing continuous cerium-based metal-organic framework-808 (Ce-MOF-808) membranes on both sides of the commercial polypropylene (PP) separator through a simple in-situ growth method. On the cathode side , the Ce-MOF-808 membrane can play multiple roles of adsorption, selective sieving and catalytic conversion towards polysulfides, thereby effectively inhibiting their shuttle effect. On the anode side , the highly uniform pore distribution and polar groups of this MOF membrane ensure the fast and homogenous diffusion of lithium ions , endowing a stable lithium nucleation and growth in the cycles. Consequently, the Ce-MOF-808/PP separator exhibits a high initial specific capacity of 954.7 mAh g −1 under 1 C with a very limited capacity fading of 0.025% in 500 cycles, and an outstanding rate capability. Moreover, the separator also ensures the stable cycling of the battery at raised sulfur loading and lean-electrolyte conditions.

The interconnected nanochannel and nitrogen, silver co-doping carbon aerogels (CAs) are successfully prepared by in situ and sol–gel strategy. The as-prepared materials with spherical structure show excellent sulfur loading of 72.6 wt% and specific surface area of 2064.5 m 2 g −1 . The active material as cathode for lithium sulfur battery can effectively suppress shuttle effect and display remarkable electrochemical performance due to the modification of tetra-nuclear silver metal organic knots and polyethylene glycol for CA, the special modifiers provide more nanochannels for CA to significantly restrict the loss of sulfur. The prominent performance mainly benefits from the synergistic effect of interconnected nanochannel network structure and transition metal sulfide (Ag 2 S) and nitrogen doping. Especially, the PEG-Ag-CA material delivers discharge capacity of 1313.6 mAh g −1 at a rate of 0.2C in first cycle, and retains 1143.8 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles. In addition, the theoretical calculations by density functional theory (DFT) further confirm the excellent absorption ability between prepared material and lithium polysulfide, and fully prove the absorption mechanism.

Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are highly anticipated due to their remarkable theoretical specific energy and energy density. Nevertheless, the polysulfide shuttle effect severely curtails their cycle life, posing a significant obstacle to commercialization. Herein, we introduce nickel-cobalt oxide/nickel-cobalt sulfate hollow nanowires (NCO/NCSO-HNWs) as a separator modification material. The ingeniously designed hollow nanostructure of NCO/NCSO-HNWs endows it with a profusion of adsorption and catalytic active sites. This unique feature enables it to not only physically adsorb lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) but also catalytically convert them, thereby remarkably enhancing the anchoring and conversion efficiency of LiPSs. The LSBs equipped with NCO/NCSO-HNWs-modified separators exhibit an outstanding initial capacity of 1260 mA h g −1 at 0.2C. Even after 100 cycles, a high capacity of 956 mA h g −1 is retained, corresponding to an impressive retention rate of 75.9%. Notably, at 1C, after enduring 500 cycles, the discharge capacity still stabilizes at 695 mA h g −1 . The utilization of such hollow nanowire-based separator modification materials represents a novel and effective strategy for elevating the performance of LSBs, holding substantial promise for surmounting the challenges associated with the shuttle effect and expediting the commercialization journey of LSBs. NCO/NCSO-HNWs were synthesized via electrospinning, hydrothermal, and annealing methods as a lithium-sulfur battery separator modifier material, which exhibits remarkable capacity and cycling stability.

Serious shuttle effect and sluggish reaction kinetics are the two major barriers that limit the cathode cycling stability in lithium-sulfur batteries. In this study, we deviate from the prevalent approach compositing sulfur with various carbonaceous materials by introducing electrocatalysis concept in lithium-sulfur chemistries. Two-dimensional graphene has been used as model system to support electrocatalyst Pt. Uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on graphene layers not only demonstrate to preferential adsorption of soluble polysulfide species, but also catalyze efficiently transformation to long-chain polysulfides in the subsequent redox process. The result rGO-Pt/S composite shows a 29.5% enhancement in capacity over pristine rGO/S electrode. More impressively, rGO-Pt/S electrode exhibits good cycling stability at a high rate of 2 C corresponding to a tiny capacity fading rate of 0.01% per cycle over 300 discharge/charge cycles. Thus, this work provides a facile strategy for improving the performance of Li-S batteries toward practical application.

Lithium–Sulfur battery is deemed as one of the most promising next-generation energy storage systems. Identifying the reduction of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is critical for rational material designs for Lithium–Sulfur batteries. In this work, a simple molten-salt method is applied to synthesize titanium nitride/silicon nitride (TiN–Si 3 N 4 ) core-shell nanoparticles to inhibit soluble polysulfides shuttling. This Ti-reacted strategy has outstanding advantages such as facile and recyclable preparation process, tunable TiN morphology, and good polysulfide adsorption. With the modified separator, Li–S cells exhibit an outstanding initial capacity of 1243 mA h g −1 at 0.5C, good rate capacity of 782 mA h g −1 at 2C, and high capacity retention of 49.2% after 500 cycles. This low-cost and eco-friendly Ti-reacted strategy provides a practical route for the actual application of separator modification in the field of lithium-sulfur battery.
