Designing and synthesizing high-activity, durable, and low-cost catalysts for the electrochemically transformation of water to hydrogen are vitally important to future energy systems . Herein, a simple but effective strategy for manganese-metal-heteroatom doping is adopted to intrinsically elevate the electrocatalytic activities of SnS 2 nanosheets by a facile two steps hydrothermal-sulfurization approach. Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution (HER) performance of Mn–SnS 2 nanosheets grown on 3D nickel foam (Mn–SnS 2 /NF) is efficiently optimized since the dopants and defects endow the Mn–SnS 2 /NF vast active sites. An overpotential as low as 71 mV is required to drive a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 with a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec −1 in alkaline environment (1 M KOH). In addition, the Mn–SnS 2 /NF exhibits prominent stability in 1 M KOH electrolyte, which is an indispensable index for the potential HER electrocatalysts . The present work demonstrates that the heteroatom manganese doping strategy renders a meaningful route for synthesizing cost-efficient HER electrocatalysts in alkaline condition.

The increased release of various emerging organic contaminants into natural waters has posed great threats to ecological safety and public health. The ensuing global water contamination has necessitated the development of highly efficient treatment strategies for water purification . Herein, we presented for the first time that the combined utilization of permanganate (Mn(VII)) and periodate (PI) could synergistically and rapidly accomplish complete destruction of different organic micropollutants (e.g., bisphenol F, methotrexate, and tetracycline) within 2–5 min. Comparatively, the single treatment only eliminated very small amounts of micropollutants. Mechanistic investigations were performed using the trapper-based electron spin resonance , scavenging and probe experiments, UV–vis spectra analysis, determination of iodine species, and multiple validation tests. These data collectively suggested that the highly reactive Mn(V)/Mn(VI) intermediates played the leading role in accelerating contaminant abatement within the Mn(VII)/PI oxidation system. Reactive oxygen/or iodine species ( 1 O 2 , OH, O 2 - , IO 3 , and IO 4 ) and low valence Mn species (Mn(II), Mn(III), and in-situ formed MnO 2 colloids) did not participate in decontamination in this process. Subsequently, the oxidized products of three micropollutants were determined, and the transformation pathways were clarified. Ring-opening, C-C bond cleavage, demethylation, carbonylation , and hydroxylation reactions mainly occurred in the degradation process. Notably, the combined system did not yield any toxic iodinated end products. Finally, the environmental risks of the degradation products were also evaluated based on in silico QSAR-based prediction tools. Overall, this study provides a novel, highly efficient, and green treatment technology, i.e., Mn(VII)/PI system, which could be employed for rapid and sustainable water decontamination.

The novel CuMnS nanoflower fluorescent probe based on Mn-doped CuS was developed to achieve the fluorescence detection of oxytetracycline hydrochloride (OTC), the fluorescent sensor has good selectivity and stability. The doping of Mn significantly increased the fluorescence intensity of CuS, which was above 10 times that of CuS. When the predominant species of OTC molecule was zwitterionic OTC +/− at the solution pH of about 5.00, the fluorescence quenching efficiency of CuMnS by OTC reached the highest. Through fluorescence lifetime and UV absorption, the sensing mechanism between CuMnS and OTC was found to be static quenching. Moreover, Multiwfn wavefunction analysis program based on density function theory (DFT) calculation was applied to compare the interactions between different OTC species and CuMnS at different pH, to reveal the micromechanism of fluorescence quenching of CuMnS by OTC from the views of atoms. The molecular surface quantitative analysis and basin analysis of different OTC species demonstrated that the N atom and O atoms of tricarbonylamide moiety of zwitterionic OTC +/− can provide lone pair electrons to form a non-fluorescent ground state complex with CuMnS. Meanwhile, the electrostatic attraction of OTC +/− with negatively charged CuMnS was also beneficial to the interaction, resulting in the effective fluorescence quenching of CuMnS. This work offers a convenient method for sensitively detecting OTC and broadens the application of CuMnS in the field of fluorescence detection.

In this work, Fe–Mn based ternary catalysts (Fe–Mn-X, X = Ce, Co and Cu) were evaluated in the plasma-catalytic oxidation of ethylene oxide (EO) using a cylindrical dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The addition of transition metal dopants to the Fe–Mn catalyst significantly improved the performance of plasma-catalyzed EO oxidation compared to the reaction using plasma only and the Fe–Mn catalyst. The highest EO conversion (91.9%) and CO 2 selectivity (78.9%) were obtained over the Fe–Mn–Co catalyst at a specific energy input (SEI) of 730.2 J l −1 . Moreover, the presence of water vapor improved EO conversion and CO 2 selectivity in the relative humidity (RH) range of 0–60%, while further increasing the RH to 80% reduced EO conversion. The interactions between Fe, Mn and dopants increased the specific surface area and pore volume of the Fe–Mn-X catalyst, while maintaining the crystalline structure of the catalysts. The presence of the dopants enhanced the reducibility of the Fe–Mn-X catalysts and produced more surface adsorbed oxygen (O ads ) on the catalyst surfaces. Moreover, the interactive effects among the Fe, Mn and dopants facilitated the plasma-catalytic oxidation reactions via enhanced surface reactions. The coupling of plasma with the Fe–Mn–Co catalyst reduced the formation of organic by-products in the plasma-catalyzed oxidation of EO.

Metal oxides, as a popular group of ozonation catalyst, are usually synthesized with physiochemical protocols involving hazardous materials and extreme conditions. In this study, a biological method was studied with manganese oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. to synthesize multi-metal oxides consisting of iron, manganese, and cobalt (Bio-FeMnCoOx) to catalyze ozonation for the first time. It was found that the dosage of cobalt, the cultivation time, and the polishing methods could significantly impact the catalytic activities of degrading benzotriazole as a model. The second-order degrading kinetic constant with optimized Bio-FeMnCoOx was 4.8 times that with the physiochemically synthesized peer. The activity of Bio-FeMnCoOx was compared with other reported catalysts in terms of Rct value. The quenching tests and EPR spectra indicated the participation of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen. The study demonstrates the great potential of biosynthesis as a green protocol for preparing metal oxides to efficiently catalyze ozonation.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) can be used as large-area sunlight collectors, which show great potential in the application of building-integrated photovoltaic areas. Achieving highly efficient LSCs requires the suppression of reabsorption losses while maintaining a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and broad absorption. Perovskites as the superstar fluorophores have recently emerged as candidates for large-area LSCs. However, highly emissive perovskites with a large Stokes shift and broad absorption have not been obtained up to now. Here, we devised a facile synthetic route to obtain Mn-doped multiple quantum well (MQW) Br-based perovskites. The Br-based perovskite host ensures broad absorption. Efficient energy transfer from the exciton to the Mn dopant produces a large Stokes shift and high PLQY simultaneously. By further coating the perovskites with Al2O3, the stability and PLQY are greatly elevated. A large area of liquid LSC (40 cm × 40 cm × 0.5 cm) is fabricated, which possesses an internal quantum efficiency (ηint) of 47% and an optical conversion efficiency (ηopt) reaching 11 ± 1%, which shows the highest value for large-area LSCs.

Magnetic nanoparticles were one of the most promising materials for targeted magnetic hyperthermia application due to the excellent magnetic properties. In this work, the magnetic nanoferrite of Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 La x Fe 2− x O 4 ( x = 0.09, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25 and 0.3) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Various physical properties of samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. XRD results revealed that the lattice constants a t and crystallite size of the Mn–Zn nanoferrites decreased with increasing La 3+ content. The characteristic absorption bands of spinel nanoferrites and polyethylene glycol were observed in the FTIR spectra. FTIR results indicated that polyethylene glycol was coated on the Mn–Zn nanoferrites successfully. The saturation magnetization ( M S ), magnetic moment ( M r ) and anisotropy constant ( K ) were affected by La 3+ ion content. The M S of Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 La 0.09 Fe 1.91 O 4 was 58 emu/g, which could be potential hyperthermia in biomedical application.

Although Mn-doped lead halide perovskites could alleviate the environmental burden of Pb, their synthesis process suffers from intricate operations, high operating temperature, low production, or toxic strong polar solvents. Developing a simple and green route for Mn-doped halide perovskites with mass production is highly desirable for perovskite-derived applications. In this work, we developed a facile and environmental-benign synthesis strategy for large-scale preparation of Mn-doped lead halide perovskite nanocrystals . The nanocrystals were prepared via a mechano-synthesis process without organic solvents . We investigated the influence of atomic composition on their morphology, crystal structure and optical performance. Our results show that the perovskite nanocrystals have dual-emissions from the 4 T 1 to 6 A 1 transition of Mn 2+ and the excitonic recombination of perovskite hosts, respectively. The achieved Mn:CsPbX 3 nanocrystals show well-tailored color rendering when used as LED phosphors. This work presents a scalable and facile strategy for Mn-doped perovskite production without organic solvents, which promises low-cost and eco-friendly LEDs.

H/F substitution drives the coordination reconstruction of Mn 2+ in hybrid chlorides. • Isolated [MnCl 4 ] 2- tetrahedra change to face-sharing [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] 5- units. • The four-to-six coordination change enables green-to-red emission centered at 634 nm. • The fluorinated non-centrosymmetric crystal exhibits phase-transition and piezoelectric responses. Regulation of the Mn 2+ coordination environment is an effective approach for tuning the luminescence of Mn-based hybrid halides. However, the use of H/F substitution on organic cations to regulate the coordination environment of Mn 2+ and thereby tune the emission color remains rarely explored. In this work, H/F substitution was introduced into the piperidinium cation, driving the transformation of Mn-Cl coordination units from four-coordinate to six-coordinate structures and yielding the zero-dimensional hybrid chloride (4-F-Hpip) 5 [Mn 2 Cl 9 ]. This material crystallizes in the chiral non-centrosymmetric P 4 1 2 1 2 space group and contains face-sharing dinuclear [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] 5- units with octahedrally coordinated Mn 2+ . The resulting ligand-field change gives rise to broad red emission centered at 634 nm, while the compound also exhibits a reversible phase transition. In addition, a flexible PBAT composite film containing 10 wt% (4-F-Hpip) 5 [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] generates an open-circuit voltage of approximately 4.9 V. Its luminescent and piezoelectric responses were further integrated into a conceptual dual-input information encryption scheme. This work establishes H/F substitution as an effective cation engineering strategy for regulating Mn 2+ coordination and luminescence in hybrid manganese halides. The Mn 3+ -ions doped Ba(Mn x Bi 1− x )O 3 ( x = 0.0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08 and 0.1) ceramic block samples are prepared by traditional solid-state method. The phase structures of these ceramic systems are analyzed, in which the XRD analysis results show the ceramic systems can be formed the solid solutions as the relatively lower Mn-adding content of x ≤ 0.4, and the ceramic blocks appear the additional diffraction peak belonging to the MnO 2 second phase with the increase of x value (≥ 0.6). Combined with the acceptor atom-doping conduction model theory and XPS analysis results, the main conductive forms of these Ba(Mn x Bi 1− x )O 3 thermistors include in the following three kinds: the movable holes formed by the acceptor Mn-doping, the 2Bi 4+ → Bi 3+ + Bi 5+ disproportionation reaction, and the [Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ] small polaron jump. For the electrical properties test results, the NTC thermal properties for the x = 0.02 and x = 0.06 samples are relatively superior: ρ 25 − 690 Ω cm, B 25/85 − 3150 K and ρ 25 ~ 940 Ω cm, B 25/85 − 3080 K, respectively.

To generate red emissions, manganese (IV) ions have recently gained recognition as potent non-rare-earth activators. However, the oxide and fluoride hosts that offer suitable environments for Mn 4+ require careful preparation, involving precise control of reaction parameters like redox equilibrium and temperature. In the current work, we show simultaneous oxidation of Mn 2+ to Mn 4+ by devitrification of glassy Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 : Mn under moderate atmospheric conditions and under the argon atmosphere. The G-sample was devitrified via thermal treatment after the parent glass, which shares the same chemical formula as dilithium tetragermanate (Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 ), was created through the use of traditional melt-quenching (MQ). Optical spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic are utilized to confirm the Mn 2+ oxidation to Mn 4+ from glass stat to glass ceramic after thermal treatment. Due to the transition from Mn 2+ to Mn 4+ , a sharp 668 nm emission peak is recorded whereas the red emission peaking at 611 nm monitored in glass is steadily reduced. The temperature-dependent PL spectra of the Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 :0.1Mn +4 , red-emitting GC in the temperature range ∼295–490 K were recorded. The PL emission intensity decreases gradually with increasing the temperature. The technique showcased for producing Na 2 Ge 4 O 9 :Mn 4+ phosphors could be expanded to synthesize other phosphors incorporating activators possessing a high oxidation state.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite (LHP) nanomaterials have been recognized as a competitive candidate for optoelectronic applications. However, the lead toxicity and intrinsic instability have limited their commercialization. Herein, a facile room-temperature approach is developed for the synthesis of an environmentally friendly all-inorganic orange-red-emitting Ag-doped and Mn-doped lead-free halide double perovskite Cs2NaBiCl6 (CNBC) in the shape of an octahedron. Only very weak orange-red photoluminescence (PL) is observed in the undoped CNBC octahedrons. However, both Ag and Mn doping heavily enhance the PL intensity of the CNBC samples. The stability of the representative Ag-doped and Mn-doped CNBC is studied under various conditions such as an ambient environment, high temperatures up to 400 °C, and UV irradiation. The alcohol-based photocatalytic performances of the samples are investigated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB) in ethanol, demonstrating a strong and stable photodegradation activity. This work will offer a facile and cost-effective protocol in doped lead-free double perovskites as a stable and environmentally friendly alternative for environmental photocatalysts.
