Preparation of core-shell 5-AT@F2602 composite: Improving the compatibility of 5-aminotetrazole with nitrocellulose

Shaoming Zhang,Jiao Zhang,Yiqiang Long,Zehao Liu,Xinyu Fu,Yajie Mu,Bobo Zhang

The advantages of the environment-friendly products and high gas production of the azole-rich compounds have potential application prospects in the gun propellant. However, the instability of the nitrogenous multicomponent ring seriously affects its compatibility with gun propellant components. In order to improve the compatibility between 5-aminotetrazole (5-AT) and nitrocellulose (NC), a separation layer between 5-AT and NC was formed by coating fluorine rubber (type F2602) on the surface of 5-AT particles with the solvent method. The results of surface morphology showed that the 5-AT surface was completely and uniformly coated with F2602. The results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and vacuum stability tester (VST) showed that the incompatibility between 5-AT and NC was greatly improved by F2602 coating, the decomposition temperature difference of NC mixed with 5-AT was reduced from 8.9°C to 3.3°C, the net reactive gas release was reduced by 55%, and the low thermal stability and storability of NC in the mixed system were improved. The kinetic analysis showed that the coating effect of F2602 reduced the chemical interaction between 5-AT and NC, and increased the decomposition temperature. Evolutionary gas analysis showed that the interaction between the reductive products of 5-AT with NO2 produced by NC was weakened after coating. The mechanism of the coating of F2602 on the 5-AT surface to improve the compatibility between 5-AT and NC was revealed. Due to the high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties of F2602, 5-AT is tightly wrapped in F2602, which greatly weakens the interaction between 5-AT and NC. The results of this study have important guiding value for the application of nitrogen-rich energetic materials in propellants.

Energy efficient production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) over surface functionalized carbon superstructures under microwave irradiation

Xiaoqi Lyu,Hong Li,Huaizhong Xiang,Yibing Mu,Na Ji,Xuebin Lu,Xiaolei Fan,Xin Gao

Microwave (MW)-assisted process intensification of catalytic conversion of saccharides is a promising route for energy efficient production of value-added chemicals and fuels. This work presents the development of the MW-responsive catalysts (i.e., the acid functionalized spherical carbon superstructure, SCS) for converting fructose to 5-HMF effectively and efficiently under MW irradiation. Under a mild MW condition (at 70 °C, atmospheric pressure), the SCS catalyst (with surface sulfonic and carboxylic acid groups) achieved fructose conversion of ~ 97.8% and selectivity to 5-HMF of ~ 90.6% after 5 min reaction time with good recyclability, being significantly higher than that obtained by the system under the conventional heating. Importantly, the MW-assisted system showed very high energy efficiency coefficient of 1.01 mmol kJ −1 L −1 compared to that (0.09 mmol kJ −1 L −1 ) of the conventional thermal catalysis. The mechanism of process intensification of the system developed may be attributed to the combination of the dipole polarization of the MW-responsive sulfonic groups and the selective heating of the MW-absorbing SCS support under the MW condition.

Fabricating Ag@MOF-5 nanoplates by the template of MOF-5 and evaluating its antibacterial activity

Yinchun Hu,Hui Yang,Renhu Wang,Menglan Duan

MOF-5 was prepared by hydrothermal method and Ag@MOF-5 nanoplates were obtained to improve the antibacterial activity and dispersion of Ag nanoparticles . MOF-5 and Ag@MOF-5 were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscope and energy spectrum (HR-TEM&EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectrum (FTIR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). MOF-5 was flaky crystals accumulated and complexed to form cube-like crystalline particles with the size of 20–50 micrometers, and it was destroyed in the process of loading nano-silver particles. Ag@MOF-5 nanoplates were nanoscale sheets, and 3–5 nm Ag nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed and loaded on nanoplates of MOF-5. The content of silver nanoparticles reached 13 wt% of Ag@MOF-5 total weight. The results of antibacterial experiment indicated that antibacterial ability of MOF-5 was limited, while Ag@MOF-5 showed good antibacterial ability to Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Selective oxidation of 5-formyloxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid with Ru/C in water solution

Si Zhihao,Zhang Xin,Zuo Miao,Wang Tao,Sun Yong,Tang Xing,Zeng Xianhai,Lin Lu

2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a one of the most promising biomass-derived chemicals to substitute the non-renewable terephthalic acid as the monomer for producing polyethyleneterephthalate. At present, the oxidation of HMF is regarded as a prevalent way to prepare FDCA. Nevertheless, the isolation and storage of HMF is still a challenge. Herein, based on the higher stability of 5-formyloxymethylfurfural (FMF) than 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), we present an effective preparation route to prepare FDCA by substituting HMF with FMF as feedstock. A complete conversion of FMF and a 93.55% selectivity of FDCA were obtained in the mixed solvent of water and 1, 2-dioxane using Ru/C as catalyst and O 2 as oxidant. An improved process was developed for preparing FDCA using FMF as feedstock. The investigation of conversion pathway showed that FMF and HMF were simultaneously oxidized to 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) in a case of the existence of the reversible equilibrium between FMF and HMF. Then DFF was oxidized to 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA). Subsequently, FFCA was oxidized to FDCA. In this process, the oxidation of FFCA to FDCA was determined as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, appropriate alkalinity favored the selectivity of FDCA and the conversion of FMF.

Palygorskite-supported ruthenium catalysts for the efficient selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2, 5-diformylfuran

Xuemin Zhong,Peng Yuan,Samahe Sadjadi,Dong Liu,Yanfu Wei

The oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) is an important reaction for the conversion of renewable biomass into feedstock chemicals. In this work, palygorskite (Pal)-supported ruthenium (Ru) catalysts were developed for the efficient selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. Using natural clay mineral palygorskite as the support enabled the immobilization and dispersion of Ru nanoparticles . A 100% HMF conversion, 98% DFF yield, and 98% DFF selectivity were obtained over Ru(III)/Pal catalyst after 4.5 h under the optimal reaction conditions at 110 °C and 10 bar of O 2 in toluene. Ru nanoparticles and palygorskite synergistically achieve the excellent catalytic performance of the catalyst. The Ru metal active sites facilitate the activation of the reactants or intermediates, accelerating the formation of DFF. Furthermore, due to their different particle sizes and Ru species, the Ru(III)/Pal catalyst exhibits higher catalytic activity than the Ru(0)/Pal catalyst for the oxidation of HMF to DFF. The palygorskite-enhanced dispersion effect on Ru nanoparticles augments the catalytic activity. Moreover, the palygorskite-supported Ru catalyst showed good stability and was reused for at least five times consecutive cycles without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Simply Assembly of Acidic Nanospheres for Efficient Production of 5-Ethoxymethylfurfural from 5-Hydromethylfurfural and Fructose

Zhongwei Wang,Hu Li,Chengjiang Fang,Wenfeng Zhao,Tingting Yang,Song Yang

A series of organic–inorganic acidic hybrids in uniform nanospheres were prepared by self-assembly of phosphotungstic acid (HPW) and pyridine (PY) or triethylamine (TEA) without using a template and surfactant. The prepared samples were characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, and N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, and their surface acidity was determined by titration. Particularly, PY-PW-1 showed a predominant catalytic performance in the near complete etherification of 5-hydromethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (EMF) with a high yield of 90 % at 80 °C in 24 h, which might be ascribed to its relatively high acidity and smaller particle size. This kinetic study elucidated the superior activity of PY-PW-1 in the HMF-to-EMF conversion. Fructose could also be directly converted to EMF in a moderate yield of 55 % at an elevated temperature of 120 °C by a cascade reaction process. In addition, PY-PW-1 could be reused five times with no evident loss of its catalytic activity. Importantly, the downstream product of EMF (i.e., ethyl levulinate) in an excellent yield of 93 % could also be achieved from HMF by further increasing the reaction temperature to 140 °C.

Copper-manganese oxide for highly selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to bio-monomer 2, 5-furandicarboxylic acid

Wang Fei,Lai Jinhua,Liu Zixuan,Wen Sha,Liu Xianxiang

Spinel copper–manganese oxide catalysts were prepared via the co-precipitation method to be used for the catalytic selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Morphological characterization revealed that the primary particles of the as-synthesized catalysts were irregular nanoparticles aggregated with each other. The effects of reaction conditions such as time, temperature, and the dosage of oxidant on the catalytic activity were investigated. The experimental results show that the CuMn 2 O 4 showed superior catalytic performance in HMF selective oxidation reaction. In the presence of acetonitrile and tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant, the catalytic reaction can achieve complete conversion of HMF, and the FDCA selectivity reached to 96.4%. The catalyst exhibited good recyclability and recoverability in a three-run recycling test. Mechanism studies reveal that Mn 3+ has a significant influence on the catalytic oxidation and the synergistic interaction between Mn and Cu can facilitate the mobility of oxygen thus improving the catalytic activity. N-doped carbon layer-coated Au nanocatalyst for H2-free conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 5-methylfurfural

Jiang Zhang,Zijian Wang,Mugeng Chen,Yifeng Zhu,Yongmei Liu,Heyong He,Yong Cao,Xinhe Bao

Deoxygenative upgrading of 5-hydromethylfurfural (HMF) into valuable chemicals has attracted intensive research interest in recent years, with product selectivity control remaining an important topic. Herein, TiO 2 supported gold catalysts coated with a thin N-doped porous carbon (NPC) layer were developed via a polydopamine-coating-carbonization strategy and utilized for pathway-specific conversion of HMF into 5-methylfurfural (5-MF) with the use of renewable formic acid (FA) as the deoxygenation reagent. The as-fabricated Au/TiO 2 @NPC exhibited excellent catalytic performance with a high yield of 5-MF (>95%). The catalytic behavior of Au@NPC-based catalysts was shown to be correlated with the suitable combination of highly dispersed Au nanoparticles and favorable interfacial interactions in the Au@NPC core-shell hetero-nanoarchitectures, thereby facilitating the preferential esterification of HMF with FA and suppressing unproductive FA dehydrogenation , which promoted the selective formylation/decarboxylation of hydroxy-methyl group in HMF in a pathway-specific manner. The present NPC/metal interfacial engineering strategy may provide a potential guide for the rational design of advanced catalysts for a wide variety of heterogeneous catalysis processes in terms of the conversion of biomass source.

Highly efficient conversion of cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural using temperature-responsive ChnH5-nCeW12O40 (n = 1–5) catalysts

Fengjiao Lai,Feng Yan,Pengju Wang,Shubin Wang,Shun Li,Zuotai Zhang

The design of stable heteropolyacid (HPA) catalysts with strong Brønsted acidity and mild Lewis acidity is crucial for the efficient conversion of renewable biomass to value-added chemicals. Firstly, a novel strategy was proposed to synthesize the Ce-based HPA of H 5 CeW 12 O 40 . Secondly, the H 5 CeW 12 O 40 was combined with ChCl to form a series of temperature-responsive HPA catalysts (Ch n H 5-n CeW 12 O 40 , n = 1–5), which allowed the catalysts to be applied as soluble catalysts at a temperature >80 °C and be easily separated as an insoluble catalyst at a temperature <80 °C. In the H 2 O/DMSO/MIBK biphasic system, one-pot production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose was achieved with an excellent yield of 67.5% over ChH 4 CeW 12 O 40 catalysis at 140 °C for 6 h, and other carbohydrates were converted, including fructose (83.1%), glucose (74.2%), sucrose (75.8%), cellobiose (70.2%) and starch (68.7%). Such high efficiency was attributed to the homogeneous catalysis at high temperature, the strong Brønsted acidity of [H 5-n CeW 12 O 40 ] n− , and the appropriate Lewis acidity from Ce(III). Moreover, the temperature-responsive property and the high stability were beneficial for recycling without significant structural change and activity loss.

Efficient production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose over CuAPO-5 molecular sieves synthesized using an ionothermal method

Yan Huang,Pilan Zhang,Hualei Hu,Danxin Hu,Jie Yang,Yexin Zhang,Chunlin Chen,Yong Yang,Jian Zhang,Lei Wang

A group of CuAPO-5 molecular sieves with trace Cu were successfully synthesized via an ionothermal method and used for fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in [BMIM]Br ionic liquid. The 0.06-CuAPO-5 sample displayed excellent performance and a HMF yield of 93.8% was obtained, which could be ascribed to the balance between acid strength and mass transfer efficiency. This work demonstrates that the ionothermal synthesized CuAPO-5 molecular sieve was also a good candidate for the efficient production of HMF.

Efficient and safe conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarbonitrile with hydroxylamine zinc chloride salt

Xuan Gao,Zhihui Li,Dongsheng Zhang,Baoquan Zhang,Yanji Wang

Efficient and safe conversion of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarbonitrile (HMFC) with hydroxylamine zinc chloride salt (ZnCl 2 ·2NH 2 OH) obtained from a novel method was developed. Without a catalyst, free NH 2 OH could react with HMF to produce HMFC with a yield of 41% at 55 °C. ZnCl 2 was an appropriate catalyst that increased HMFC yield to 64%. However, the reaction has a potential explosion safety hazard and a low effective utilization rate of NH 2 OH due to the easy decomposition property of free NH 2 OH. To address these issues, ZnCl 2 ·2NH 2 OH was prepared to serve as a hydroxylamine stabilizer, catalyst, and nitrogen source in the synthesis of HMFC. Therefore, NH 2 OH could be slowly released to participate in the reaction, slowing the invalid decomposition and increasing the utilization rate of elemental N. Under optimal conditions of n(HMF): n(NH 2 OH) = 1:1.5, 100 °C for 20 min with acetonitrile as solvent, the yield of HMFC was 100%. A plausible reaction mechanism for HMFC synthesis was also proposed.
