Study on the biocomposites with poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate and surfaced-grafted hydroxyapatite nanoparticles

Haibo Li,Yi Fu,Rui Niu,Ziyou Zhou,Jun Nie,Dongzhi Yang

In composites of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles with a polymer matrix, the aggregation of nanoparticles would induce structural defects. In order to improve the dispersibility of HA nanoparticles in poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) matrix and enhance mechanical properties of the HA/PEGDMA composite as potential bone substitute material, surface-grafted HA nanoparticles with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA) were prepared, and crosslinked with PEGDMA under UV light to form a composite. The structure of HA- g -PEGMA was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersibility of HA- g -PEGMA nanoparticles in poly(PEGDMA) was evaluated by SEM. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by compressive test. The dispersibility of HA- g -PEGMA nanoparticles in poly(PEGDMA) matrix was better than the bare HA. At a 1 wt % content of loading, the strength of composites increased by 14%, and the modulus increased by 9%. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci., 2013

Phosphate ester side-chain-modified conjugated polymer for hybrid solar cells

Zhongqiang Zhang,Zhengneng Jin,Weifei Fu,Minmin Shi,Hongzheng Chen

Although nanocrystals have several advantages of tunable bandgap and high carrier mobility, it is still challenging to achieve high-performance polymer: nanocrystals hybrid solar cells (HSC) due to the complicated surface problem. Many efforts have been devoted to replace the long alkyl chain on the surface of nanocrystals to improve the charge transfer and transport. Herein, we modified the alkyl chain in poly[2,6–(4,4- bis (2-ethylhexyl)−4H-cyclopenta[2,1-b;3,4-b′]-dithiophene)- alt -4,7–(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT) by phosphate ester. Due to its strong affinity to CdSe nanocrystals, the resulting polymers can spontaneously exchange the long chain ligands in one-step process. With the improved morphology of polymer: CdSe blended film, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.12% was achieved for hybrid solar cells. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. ROS-sensitive selenium-containing cationic brush polymer with potent gene transfection efficiency and biocompatibility

Yonghua Zhai,Lili Wu,Jie Gao,Jingsheng Zhou,Longhai Du,Xiaoda Fu,Yang Gao,Tinglin Zhang,Mengya Zhang,Weihong Lu,Yan Wu

Smart gene delivery vectors are gaining increasing attention in gene therapy, owing to their low cytotoxicity and intrinsic responsiveness. Our previously fabricated novel cationic brush polymer, comprising C  Se bonds and tertiary amine EGIn- g -PDMAEMA, shows potential for gene transfection. In this study, its high efficiency for siRNA/pDNA transfection and low cytotoxicity in reactive oxygen species (ROS)-rich microenvironments is substantiated in vitro. Its superior binding capacity with siRNA/pDNA is confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis assay. The threshold weight ratios for siRNA/pDNA migration delay are 15 and 3 (polymer-to-nucleic acid, w/w), respectively. Fluorescence microscopy and ribonucleotide reductase regulatory subunit M2 gene silencing essay verify the biodegradability and responsive control release of nucleic acids under hydrogen peroxide stimulation in Huh-7 cells. Compared with the gold standard, polyethylenimine 25 kDa, the target polymer displays superior transfection efficiency in ROS-rich tumor cells under serum-free conditions. Furthermore, the vector–nucleic acid complexes exhibit over 90% cell viability at a high concentration of 12 μg mL −1 and good colloidal stability in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 10% fetal bovine serum-PBS for 24 h. The efficient control release and expression of nucleic acids in ROS environments and reduced cytotoxicity highlight the superiority of EGIn- g -PDMAEMA as a gene delivery platform for tumor gene therapy.

Application of Melem and Aluminum Diethylphosphinate in the Synergistic Flame Retardancy of PA6: Composites Preparation and Properties

Xiao Liu,Yaochi Liu

Triazine compounds are widely used as nitrogen-based halogen-free flame retardants. The commonly applied melamine has issues like low decomposition temperatures and a single flame-retardant element. Herein, melem (MEL), the trimer melamine with higher thermal stability, was synthesized using a one-step calcination method. It was mixed with aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) to obtain a synergistic flame retardant. Using the melt blending process, the polyamide 6 (PA6) composites of PA6, MEL, and ADP were produced. The composites containing MEL and ADP exhibited excellent flame-retardant performance, including self-extinguishing time, droplet count, and residual carbon content. When the mass ratio of MEL to ADP was 1:3 and the total loading reached 20 wt%, the PA6 composites achieved a V-0 rating in vertical burning (UL-94) tests, with limiting oxygen indices (LOI) reaching 33.5%. MEL decomposed into inert gases to provide gas-phase flame retardancy, while ADP and MEL synergistically promoted the formation of a dense carbon layer, providing solid-phase flame retardancy. The tensile strength of PA6/20MEL-ADP-1 was reduced by 29.61% compared to PA6. Its excellent comprehensive performance enabled its application in automobiles and electronic components. This work provides a synergistic strategy for high thermal stability triazine flame retardants and high-performance fire-retardant PA6.

Construction of Water Channels by Mg–Al Layered Double Hydroxide (LDH) and Etched ZIF-L (Co) for Tight Ultrafiltration (TUF) Membrane to Separate Dye/Salt in High-Salinity Textile Wastewater

Biqin Chen,Yuxia Li,Jinghao Cao,Shenghui Liu,Ke Fan,Haixin Li

The existing TUF membranes often face challenges such as declining permeation flux and insufficient separation selectivity. This study proposes to improve the above problems by the synergistic effect of Mg–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) and tannic acid (TA) etched metal–organic frameworks (MOFs): (1) TUF membranes with adjustable interlayer distances and multi-level mass transfer channels were constructed by doping LDH two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets; (2) TAZIF-L (Co) etched by TA was introduced. TA inhibited the swelling of LDH nanosheets through coordination and enhanced the interface binding between ZIF-L (Co) and the substrate, thereby suppressing its shedding. The results showed that TA can etch ZIF-L (Co), and the membrane prepared after etching has better selectivity and stability of dye/salt separation. Taking MTAZIF-0.02 as an example, the pure water flux was 88.23 L m −2 h −1 , which was 1.91 times that of MLDH. The removal rate of congo red (CR) solution was 92.56%. The NaCl rejection in methyl blue (MB)/NaCl solution was 10.88% and in CR/NaCl solution was 10.57%. This study provides an experimental basis for the construction of highly selective ultrafiltration membrane for the treatment of high concentration dye/salt wastewater.

Modification of Soybean Meal Degradation Products to Achieve Durable Flame-Retardant Finishing of Cotton Fabrics

Wenju Zhu,Kai Ma,Wei Peng,Shuolong Wang,Shuang Xu,Jiarui Liu,Xiaokang Yang,Jia Chen,Chunming Zheng,Zhao Dai

Conventional flame-retardant textiles often rely on halogenated or formaldehyde-based chemicals, raising environmental and health concerns. This study explores a sustainable alternative by developing a novel, durable, and halogen- and formaldehyde-free flame retardant (PmS) derived from soybean meal through degradation and chemical modification. The key innovation lies in creating a high-performance, bio-based flame-retardant finish that integrates durably into cotton fabric while maintaining essential textile properties. By applying 90 g/L PmS, the treated cotton fabric achieved an exceptional limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 29.2%, a significant reduction in char length to 68 mm, and retained a self-extinguishing LOI of 25.3% even after 50 laundering cycles. Comprehensive characterization (FT-IR, XPS, SEM, EDS) confirmed successful chemical bonding and penetration within the fibers. Cone calorimetry further demonstrated substantial fire safety improvements, with reductions in total heat release and peak heat release rate by 29.7% and 81.12%, respectively, supported by char residue analysis indicating a condensed-phase flame-retardant mechanism. Critically, the treated fabric preserved satisfactory softness, mechanical strength, and breathability. This work successfully establishes a viable and eco-conscious strategy for durable flame-retardant finishing of textiles using renewable biomass.

Outstanding Impact Resistance of Poly(ether-ether-ketone) Reinforced by Polyetherimide-Modified Long Carbon Fiber via Solution Impregnation

Yuqi Liu,Shuyuan Ge,Desheng Qi,Lingcheng Meng,Yuru Jiang,Mengtian Jiang,Shuang Zhao,Shan Wang,Xigui Yue

Polyetherimide (PEI) modified long carbon fiber (LCF) reinforced poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites were fabricated using a solution impregnation technique. Processing parameters were systematically optimized through orthogonal experimental design. The influence of carbon fiber length on the mechanical properties, thermal behavior, crystallization characteristics, and microstructure of the composites was thoroughly investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed uniform dispersion of carbon fibers within the PEEK matrix and a certain three-dimensional fiber orientation. These structural features contributed to outstanding mechanical performance, with maximum recorded values of 335 MPa in tensile strength, 343 MPa in flexural strength (LCF/PEEK-10 mm), and 232 kJ·m −2 in Charpy impact strength (LCF/PEEK-3 mm). The introduction of PEI significantly improved fiber-matrix interfacial adhesion, facilitating enhanced resin impregnation. These high-performance lightweight composites demonstrate considerable potential for advanced applications in aerospace, biomedical implants, and industrial manufacturing.

Dongzi Zhou,Haicun Yang,Junfeng Cheng,Dong Wang,Dun Wu,Wenzhong Ma,Chunlin Liu,Yanping Xia,Fangli Sun,Zheng Cao

With rapid advances in nanotechnology and materials science, the development of high-performance humidity sensors has become a research hotspot. In this work, the porous carbon nanofibers (PCNFs) with controllable nanopore structure were prepared from polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blended polymers by electrospinning technique and carbonization method. The low-cost and easily available PCNFs were introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) humidity-sensitive system, and the PVA/PCNFs composite nanofibrous humidity-sensitive layer was fabricated on the surface of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensors. The PVA/PCNFs composite nanofiber-modified QCM moisture-sensitive element had good moisture-sensitive response characteristics with a maximum frequency response of −3114 Hz (11%–98% RH), a fitted correlation coefficient of R 2 = 0.9981, and response/recovery times of 36 s/< 1 s and 60 s/< 1 s under low and high humidity conditions, respectively. In addition, the QCM sensor based on PVA/PCNFs nanofibers showed good reproducibility and long-term stability. Compared with other moisture-sensitive elements, the PVA/PCNFs moisture-sensitive element has the characteristics of fast response and easy fabrication, which provides a solution for the preparation of low-cost, high-performance and environmentally friendly moisture-sensitive elements.

A Rigid-Ring Structured Polyampholyte Copolymer as a Fluid Loss Agent for High-Temperature and High-Salinity Water-Based Drilling Fluids

Jiawei Mu,Ling Lin,Yong Zhou,Yue Feng,Linglan Zhang

With the development of oil and gas resources to deep and ultra-deep formations, the drilling process often faces complex conditions of high temperature and high salinity. It is still a challenge to prepare fluid loss reducers with excellent rheological properties and fluid loss control properties. In this study, a polyampholyte copolymer PDADS was synthesized from N, N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC), and sodium (4-vinylphenyl) methanesulfonate (SVM). FT-IR, 1 H NMR, XPS, GPC, and TGA characterization confirmed its successful synthesis and excellent thermal stability. When 3.0 wt% PDADS was added, the FL API of the drilling fluid was 5.2 mL and the FL HTHP was controlled at 26.0 mL at 230°C and 15 wt% NaCl. Under high temperature and high salinity conditions, PDADS was adsorbed on the surface of bentonite particles through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction, which promoted its uniform dispersion and helped to form a dense mud cake to significantly reduce the fluid loss. In summary, PDADS is expected to play an important role in drilling operations in ultra-high temperature and high salinity formations.

Synthesis and Properties of Polyacrylate Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives With Macro-Crosslinkers

Ran Zong,Xinli Hu,Yongzhong Bao,Baoqing Shentu

To achieve a balance of low modulus, high recovery, and strong adhesion in pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) of flexible displays, a series of crosslinkable oligomers with varied structures and molecular weights are synthesized and subsequently incorporated into acrylate copolymers as macro-crosslinkers. The structure of the macro-crosslinkers is characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H NMR), and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The effects of the macro-crosslinkers' structure and molecular weight on the properties of copolymers are systematically investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometer, and universal testing machine. The macro-crosslinkers enhance the chain mobility while maintaining the integrity of the crosslinking network, leading to a more flexible network with a combination of strong cohesion and high chain mobility. Compared to HDDA-crosslinked copolymers, the copolymers with macro-crosslinkers exhibit a lower modulus, superior elongation, and enhanced stress relaxation, while maintaining comparable strain recovery and cyclic stability. For instance, P- cPPG1k exhibits a 26% reduction in modulus, a 60% increase in elongation at break compared to P- HDDA , with an elastic recovery rate maintained over 92% at 200% strain. Moreover, P- cPPG1k exhibits adhesive performance superior to commercial flexible display PSAs, underscoring the practical potential of this strategy.

An On-Demand Antibacterial Hyaluronic Acid Hydrogel With Integrated Tissue Adhesion and Strain Sensing

Jiayan Luo,Jinquan Huang,Jiwei Huang,Wenzhai Cao,Junying Chen

Wound healing is frequently accompanied by bacterial infections, and the ongoing antibacterial activity can impact the healing process. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a smart antibacterial material that can be utilized and halted at will. Herein, we fabricated a multifunctional hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel integrated with novel conductive polypyrrole–polydopamine (PPy/PDA) nanoparticles. The hydrogel network is crosslinked via boronate ester bonds, forming a hydrogel with a porosity of approximately 60%, and rheological experiments demonstrate its excellent self-healing ability. This composite hydrogel exhibits superior photothermal conversion efficiency and electrical conductivity, which are synergistically enhanced by the incorporation of PPy/PDA nanohybrids. Near-infrared irradiation serves as a noninvasive stimulus to trigger its antibacterial activity, achieving 99% bactericidal efficacy against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus upon NIR exposure. Electrical characterization reveals a conductivity range of 10 −4 to 10 −3 S/cm, enabling its application as a sensitive strain sensor for real-time monitoring of joint flexion and other biomechanical movements. Furthermore, the hydrogel demonstrates robust tissue adhesion properties and favorable biocompatibility profiles. These findings highlight the potential of this multifunctional hydrogel as an intelligent wound dressing for integrated wound monitoring and on-demand infection control.

An Oleogel-Based Slippery Membrane via Green Solvent-Free Strategy for Paraffin Oil/Water Separation

Lixian Wang,Zhixin Li,Lizhi Zhao,Baitao Xu,Guangyue Du,Ziteng Han,Ziyi Fan,Huiqin An,Hui Ye,Qingping Xin,Yuzhong Zhang

Membranes with slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) have emerged as highly promising candidates for oil/water separation owing to high separation efficiency and anti-fouling properties. However, the fabrication of SLIPS is complex and often involves organic solvents, posing environmental and cost concerns. This study developed an oleogel-based slippery membrane via a green solvent-free method. A beeswax/paraffin oil oleogel was hot-pressed onto the surface of polypropylene (PP) membrane. The obtained PP-OleG membrane exhibited self-lubricating property, enabling water droplets to slide on the surface. Further infusion of paraffin oil yielded a PP-OleG-oil membrane with enhanced slippery property and anti-protein adhesion. The oleogel and oil layers on the membrane surface demonstrated good stability. Both PP-OleG and PP-OleG-oil membranes outperformed unmodified PP in water-in-oil emulsion separation. Notably, the PP-OleG-oil membrane protected by oleogel and oil layers prevented direct contact between contaminants and the membrane substrate, resulting in excellent anti-fouling performance. After six cycles of filtration, the flux recovery rate reached 86%, and the separation efficiency remained above 98.5%. This oleogel-based membrane offers a feasible approach to enhancing anti-fouling performance in oil/water separation and also provides insights for wastewater treatment through green strategies.
