This paper reports the highly efficient pyroelectric nanomaterial-based catalytic degradation of waste dye under rapid temperature oscillation, which was achieved by periodical solar irradiation on a porous pyroelectric membrane that was floating at the liquid/air interface. Such a membrane consists of the light-to-heat conversion carbon black film as the top layer and the porous poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) film embedded with pyroelectric barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles (BTO NPs) as the bottom layer. By using an optical chopper, solar light can be modulated to periodically irradiate on the floating membrane. Because of the photothermal effect and low thermal conductivity of the PVDF polymer, the generated heat is localized at the surface of the membrane and substantially increases the surface temperature within a short period of time. When the solar light is blocked by the chopper, interfacial evaporation through the porous membrane along with convective air cooling and radiative cooling leads to heat dissipation, and then the temperature of the membrane is rapidly decreased. Such an efficient thermal cycle results in a substantial rate of temperature change of the membrane, which enhances its pyroelectric capability and subsequent pyro-catalysis. In contrast, the efficiency of pyro-catalysis through the dispersed BTO NP solution is about 4 times lower than that of the BTO composite membrane. With the large heat capacity of the aqueous solution and inevitable thermal loss because of bulk heating, the rate of temperature change of the BTO NP solution is much smaller than that of the BTO composite membrane and thus results in a relatively small pyro-catalytic capability. Furthermore, the reusability and transferability of this newly developed composite membrane make it amenable to practical use in treating contaminated water. The findings in our report not only offer a new design strategy for efficient solar-enabled pyro-catalysis but also pave a new way to rationally harvest solar–thermal energy in nature for various applications that involve pyroelectric materials.

In this work, KTa 0.2 Nb 0.8 O 3 –BaTiO 3 (KTN–BT) hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Flexible nanocomposite films comprised of poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) matrix and KTN–BT hybrid fillers of different molar ratio were prepared by solution-casting. It is revealed that the introduction of BT to the KTN causes decreased grain size and homogenous morphology, improving the dielectric constant, breakdown strengthen and energy density of nanocomposite films. Typically, the nanocomposite film containing 40 vol% KTN–BT possesses a dielectric constant of 322 at 100 Hz, which is 8.7 times than that of pure polymer. Also, nanocomposite film with < 10 vol% of filler could achieve high breakdown strength of over 300 MV m −1 . The energy density of the film containing 2 vol% KTN–BT filler is 61.4% higher than that of pure P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) polymer. (7.1 J cm −3 compared to 4.4 J cm −3 .) In addition, the nanocomposites also displayed good flexibility and kept excellent dielectric properties after bending and folding. All the improved performance enables these composites to meet the requirements of many flexible electronic devices and energy storage devices.

Carbon nano-materials e.g. graphene are widely utilized to prepare high-к dielectrics due to their low percolation threshold. However, composites incorporated with conductive carbon nano-materials usually suffer from high dielectric loss. In this work, a strategy is proposed to suppress the dielectric loss of graphene/P(VDF-HFP) composites using two-dimensional BaTiO 3 platelets. Large interfacial region is formed in the composites due to the hybrid fillers , which results with enhanced interfacial polarization . The BaTiO 3 platelets are aligned in the perpendicular direction to the surface of the composite film after the treatment of tape casting . These aligned BaTiO 3 platelets act as isolation belts to block the electron transportation path. In these contributions, composite with a high permittivity of 66.2 and suppressed dielectric loss of 0.048 are simultaneously obtained. This work provide a feasible route to prepare high performance dielectric composites.

SnO 2 nanoparticles with an average diameter of about 4 nm were coated on the surface of BaTiO 3 (BT) (∼100 nm) by chemical treatment. With the introduction of BT@SnO 2 , the dielectric permittivity of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) composite was significantly increased to 90 at 10 3 Hz, which is ∼40% higher than that of the BT/PVDF composites. It was attributed to the enhanced interfacial polarization in the interlayers between BT and PVDF due to the addition of SnO 2 nanodots. The distance of SnO 2 nanodots on the adjacent BT surfaces is close enough for the electron transport in the matrix by tunneling effect. Besides, the semiconductive SnO 2 leads to the weak insulating-conducting transition close to the percolation threshold.

BaTiO 3 nanowires/polyimide (BT-NWs/PI) and BaTiO 3 nanoparticles/polyimide (BT-NPs/PI) composites with low volume (≤10vol%) fraction of ceramic fillers were successfully prepared by in-situ dispersive polymerization. The BT-NWs were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method . The microstructure, dielectric properties , and energy storage density of the composites were studied. It was found that the two types of fillers were dispersed homogeneously in the PI matrix. Compared with BT-NPs/PI composites, the dielectric constant of composites filled by BT-NWs was larger at the same concentration. Stronger interfacial polarization mainly determined the dielectric properties that we observed on BT-NWs/PI composites. Furthermore, the energy storage density of the composites was significantly enhanced by BT-NWs, and energy storage density of 1.06 J/cm 3 was obtained under an electric field of 2200 kV/cm with the BT-NWs content of 2 vol%, which was 37% larger than that of the pure PI. The results indicate that the introduced wire-like ceramic fillers contribute to the enhancement of the dielectric properties and energy storage density of the composites.

Dense (1 − x )BaTiO 3− x (Na 1/4 Bi 3/4 )(Mg 1/4 Ti 3/4 )O 3 [(1 − x )BT– x NBMT] polycrystalline ceramics were prepared by solid-state reaction method. The detailed structure analysis was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy , confirming that the Ba and Ti sites were partially replaced by Na + /Bi 3+ and Mg 2+ ions, respectively. An obvious structural variation from tetragonal to pseudocubic was observed for sample with x = 0.08–0.12. The lattice parameter for sample with x ≥ 0.12 decreased linearly with x value. Three changing modes in frequency, width and intensity were observed with x value in the Raman spectra, indicating intense changes of local structure, accounting for evolved dielectric and ferroelectric macroscopic properties. The subgrain microstructures were observed by conventional transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) attachment. A large number of core–shell grains were detected by TEM dark field, for x = 0.20, which were attributed to the dissolution–precipitation mechanism. In this present study, (1 − x )BT– x NBMT ceramics are considered promising for high temperature capacitor applications.

Nb-doped 0.90BaTiO3-0.10(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 temperature-insensitive ceramics with novel core-shell structure were sintered at low temperature by the conventional solid-state reaction method. The beneficial role of Nb in facilitating the formation of core-shell structure because of chemical inhomogeneity is verified, which is responsible for the weak temperature dependence of dielectric properties. Temperature dependence of permittivity measured at different frequencies shows high frequency dispersion at low temperature, while without relaxor characteristic at high temperature. The Vogel–Fulcher model was adopted to study the relaxor behaviour of Nb-doped 0.90BaTiO3-0.10(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 ceramics at low temperature. The samples with an addition of 1.5 mol% Nb2O5 provide a temperature coefficient of capacitance meeting the requirements of the X9R characteristic, and result exhibits an optimum dielectric behaviour of εr ∼1900, tanδ ∼1.8% at room temperature, making the material a promising candidate for high temperature applications.

Piezoelectric fiber composites (PFCs) have attracted much interest owing to their flexibility and toughness compared with conventional monolithic piezoceramic wafers. The free strain values and actuation property of PFCs strongly depend on the active electric field applied in Pb(Zr 1 − x Ti x )O 3 (PZT) fibers. Reducing the dielectric constant mismatch between PZT fiber and the assembling epoxy resin would greatly increase the active electric field in PZT fiber. Therefore, BaTiO 3 (BT) nanoparticles were introduced into the epoxy resin to enhance the dielectric constant. Homogeneous dispersion of BT nanoparticles and tight adhesion with the epoxy resin were achieved through a surface modification by dopamine. The maximum dielectric constant of dopamine modified BT/epoxy (BT@Dop/epoxy) nanocomposites was 10.38 with 12 wt% BT@Dop content at 1 kHz. The maximum free strain of PFCs reached 1820 ppm with 6 wt% BT@Dop content, while PFCs assembled by pure epoxy showed 790 ppm at the same processing condition. The tip displacement of cantilever beam actuated by PFCs reached the peak of 19 mm at the resonance frequency with 6 wt% BT@Dop, which was improved by 90% comparing to PFCs with pure epoxy.

High-energy-density flexible composite films, using one dimension BaTiO 3 @Ag nanofibers (BT@Ag NFs) as fillers and PVDF as polymeric matric, have been prepared by solution casting and the following hot compressing molding. The BT@Ag NFs have been prepared by electrospinning and then chemical deposition method. The dielectric constant, dielectric loss, breakdown strength and energy density were studied systematically. The maximum dielectric constant is 42.8 at 1 kHz in the nanocomposites loading with 15 vol% BT@Ag NFs, which is about 515% larger than that of the pristine PVDF (8.3 at 1 kHz). The energy density of the 2.5 vol% BT@Ag NFs/PVDF nanocomposites is 7.75 J cm − 3 at 3500 kV m − 1 , which is about 645% over the biaxially oriented polypropylenes (1.2 J cm − 3 at 6400 kV m − 1 ). The enhanced energy density may be ascribed to the Coulomb block effect. Such improvements are of potential importance for preparation of high-energy-density nanocomposites.

High energy density polymer nanocomposites with high-temperature resistance are quite desirable for film capacitors and many other power electronics. In this study, polyimide-based (PI) nanocomposite films containing the core-shell structured barium titanate@silicon dioxide (BT@SiO 2 ) nanofibers have been successfully synthesized by the solution casting method. In the BT@SiO 2 /PI nanocomposite films, the dielectric permittivity as well as the breakdown strength increase significantly. The SiO 2 shell layers with moderate dielectric permittivity could effectively mitigate the local field concentration induced by the large mismatch between the dielectric permittivity of BT and PI, which contributes to the enhancement of the breakdown strength of the PI nanocomposite films. As a result, the PI nanocomposite film filled with 3 vol% BT@SiO 2 nanofibers exhibits a maximal energy density of 2.31 J cm −3 under the field of 346 kV/mm, which is 62% over the pristine PI (1.42 J cm −3 at 308 kV/mm) and about 200% greater than the best commercial polymer, i.e. biaxially oriented polypropylenes (BOPP) (≈1.2 J cm −3 ). The thermogravimetric analysis results indicate that the BT@SiO 2 /PI nanocomposite films have good thermal stability below 500 °C.

Flexible nanocomposite dielectrics with inorganic nanofillers exhibit great potential for energy storage devices in advanced microelectronics applications. However, high loading of inorganic nanofillers in the matrix results in an inhomogeneous electric field distribution, thereby hindering the improvement of the energy storage density (Ue) of the dielectrics. Herein, we proposed a strategy that utilized (00l)-oriented barium titanate (BT) single-crystal platelets to fabricate trilayered nanocomposite dielectrics for energy storage applications. The trilayered nanocomposites consisted of two high-permittivity layers of (Ta2O5, Al2O3) codoped TiO2 nanoparticles (Ta-Al@TiO2 nps) dispersed in a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) matrix to facilitate large electric displacement and a middle layer of (00l)-oriented BT single-crystal platelets to provide high breakdown strength. Hence, the trilayered PVDF/Ta-Al@TiO2 nps/BT single-crystal platelet nanocomposite film attains an outstanding Ue of 16.9 J cm–3 at 370 kV mm–1, which is ∼625% higher than that of the single-layer PVDF/Ta-Al@TiO2 nps film. Finite element simulation further clarified that the successive inner layer of highly (00l)-oriented BT single-crystal platelets could effectively restrain the propagation of electrical treeing in trilayered nanocomposites. This research offers an effective approach for developing flexible dielectric capacitors with an excellent energy storage performance.

The interface between the polymer matrix and inorganic fillers plays a determinative role in dielectric properties of the composites. In this work, dielectric composites containing core-shell structured BaTiO 3 @Al 2 O 3 (BT@AO) nanoparticles and cyano functionalized cellulose (cyanoethyl cellulose, CEC) were prepared to achieve enhanced interface and dielectric properties. With the wide bandgap Al 2 O 3 (AO) shell, the carrier motion inspired by elevating electric filed and temperature was significantly impeded in the composites. Meanwhile, the moderate dielectric constant and surface energy of AO shell between CEC and BaTiO 3 (BT) alleviated the inhomogeneous local electric field distribution and improve the interfacial compatibility between inorganic filler and CEC matrix. As a result, enhanced dielectric properties including restrained dielectric loss (0.23 for BT@AO/CEC versus 0.51 for BT/CEC at 100 Hz), suppressed conductivity, increased breakdown strength and improved dielectric constant were accessed in the BT@AO/CEC composites. The excellent thermal conductivity of AO also offered the composites with additional advantage of low electrical conductivity at high temperature of 100°C (1.56 × 10 −10 S/cm) exhibiting two orders of magnitude smaller than that of pure CEC. Highlights Core-shell structured BaTiO 3 @Al 2 O 3 were prepared and incorporated into cyanoethylated cellulose to yield flexible nanocomposites. Carrier motion was significantly restricted by the wide band gap of Al 2 O 3 shell. Enhanced interfacial compatibility was accessed in the BaTiO 3 @Al 2 O 3 /CEC composite. Improved dielectric properties and thermal conductivity were achieved.
