There is a lack of information on the various components in germinated soybeans. Therefore, this study aimed to further investigate the differences between three-day -germinated and raw (non-germinated) yellow and black soybeans. The results showed that germination increased the contents of beta-carotene and vitamin B 2 significantly. The free amino acids in raw soybeans were not detected but determined in germinated soybeans, which illustrated that the total free amino acids in germinated soybeans were higher than in raw soybeans. Meanwhile, GABA was 10-fold increased in germinated soybeans. The increase of aglycones of isoflavones was significantly high that reached to over 700% in both soybeans. The total saponin content in germinated yellow soybeans was increased two times whereas there was a slight decline in germinated black soybeans. The anthocyanin content was found to be declined in germinated black soybeans. The current study indicates that three-day- germinated soybeans yield higher nutritional values than raw soybeans, suggesting that the germinated soybeans are a good source of various nutrients and other biologically active compounds.

Aggregation and deposition of amyloid beta-protein 1–42 (Aβ42) in the brain, primarily owing to hydrophobic interactions between Aβ42 chains, is a common pathology in all forms of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Hydrophilic oligosaccharides are widely present in the extracellular matrix and on the cytoplasmic membrane. To determine if oligosaccharides bind to Aβ42 or its aggregates and consequently affect their aggregation and cellular function, this study examined the interaction of typical functional oligosaccharides with Aβ42 or its aggregates. Isomaltooligosaccharides (IMOs), particularly isomaltotriose, panose, and isomaltotetraose, functioned as molecular chaperones for Aβ42 by binding directly to Aβ42, preserving Aβ42’s active conformation and cytotrophic activity. Oral IMOs reduced total plasma Aβ level and indirectly caused a slight reduction in the load of Aβ42 spots/plaques in the brain of AD model mice (male). Another branched oligosaccharide, bianntennary core pentasaccharide (BCP), had a relatively high binding specificity for Aβ42 oligomers (Aβ42O) and acted as an antagonistic binding partner for Aβ42O. Free BCP effectively blocked/prevented further assembly of Aβ42O and their toxicity to neural and vascular endothelial cell lines. Since BCP is also a signaling component of membrane targets (glycolipids, glycoproteins or receptors), it seemed that BCP had two opposing effects on the binding of Aβ42O to target cells. This study’s findings suggest that these branched oligosaccharides may be potential candidates for blocking or preventing Aβ42 aggregation and Aβ42O cytotoxicity/neurotoxicity, respectively, and that IMO-like or free BCP-like oligosaccharide deficiencies in the brain may be one of the underlying mechanisms for Aβ42 aggregation and Aβ42O cytotoxicity.

Highly hydrophilic and durable Beta zeolite membranes with high aluminum (Al) spatial distribution were synthesized on inexpensive α-alumina supports via an organic template-free synthesis gel. In the absence of organic templates, the Al spatial distribution of Beta zeolite membrane crystal was regulated by the synthesis parameters such as the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 ratio, alkalinity, H 2 O/SiO 2 ratio and crystallization temperature, and the crystal morphology, Si/Al ratio and dehydration performance of the membrane could be further effectively controlled. Under optimal synthesis conditions, the prepared Beta zeolite membrane had an excellent separation factor of over 22,000 and a high permeation flux of 3.02 kg m −2 h −1 in the case of a 90 wt% n-butanol/water mixture at 75 °C. The high-performance Beta zeolite membrane was applied for continuous dehydration to obtain anhydrous n-butanol (99.9 wt%) from a 90 wt% n-butanol/water mixture. Furthermore, Beta zeolite membranes showed long-term acid stability in pervaporation dehydration of a 90 wt% n-butanol/water mixture with a pH value of approximately 2.0 at 75 °C for 192 h, indicating that these membranes by adjusting Al spatial distribution exhibited excellent hydrophilicity and acid resistance, which had a broad promising prospect of industrial applications for dehydration separation of acid-containing organic solvents.

Active food packaging made from edible materials was considered as a promising alternative to traditional food packaging. Betulin (BE) is a natural active ingredient extracted from the bark of the birch tree, which has anti-inflammation, antibacterial and antioxidant properties. However, the low solubility of BE in water limits its application in active food packaging. In this research, in order to expand the application range of BE, an innovative potentially antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging material was developed. Betulin/hydroxypropyl- beta -cyclodextrin inclusion complex nanofibers (BE/HP β CD-IC-NF) with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:2 was prepared by electrospinning. Scanning electron microscopy results showed a smooth surface with no beads on the free-standing BE/HP β CD-IC-NF. The results of NMR hydrogen spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy proved that the BE was successfully encapsulated in the cavity of HP β CD. Meanwhile, the results of thermogravimetric analysis and phase solubility studies proved that the BE/HP β CD-IC-NF enhanced the aqueous solubility and thermal stabilization of BE. Fast dissolving experiment proved that the BE/HP β CD-IC-NF was disintegrated rapidly in water. Furthermore, the free radical scavenging activity and antimicrobial test demonstrated that BE/HP β CD-IC-NF has antioxidant properties and good antimicrobial properties, respectively. Meanwhile, in vivo antimicrobial tests on strawberries proved that BE/HP β CD-IC-NF has an effective effect on the preservation and stabilization of fruits. In conclusion, BE/HP β CD-IC-NF prepared in this study can effectively improve thermal stability, aqueous solubility, antibacterial and antioxidant activity of BE, which provides potential for its application in the field of active food packaging.

Glycolic acid finds extensive applications in the production of biodegradable polymers, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. In this study, a Pt catalyst supported on the Sn-Beta zeolite (Pt/Sn-Beta) was developed to achieve the efficient and highly selective catalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol with molecular oxygen to prepare glycolic acid at near-room temperature (30 °C). Characterization results, including XRD, TEM, XPS, FT-IR, and O2-TPD, revealed that the relatively uniform dispersion of Pt particles, the optimal density of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites in the catalyst, and the synergistic interaction between Sn and Pt sites might be key factors contributing to the excellent catalytic performance of the Pt/Sn-Beta catalyst. By optimizing the reaction conditions, a 90% conversion of ethylene glycol and an 81% selectivity of glycolic acid were obtained. Furthermore, Pt/Sn-Beta exhibited excellent stability, with no significant decrease in catalytic performance after six repeated uses.

Sn-containing zeolite catalysts exhibit the unique feature of selectively activating carbonyl groups in organic compounds, which demonstrate relatively high activity and selectivity in the Baeyer-Villiger (B V) oxidation of aldehydes or ketones using H 2 O 2 as the oxidant. However, the influence of diffusion property and trace water on the ε-caprolactone selectivity as targeted product in the cyclohexanone's B V oxidation system with the green oxidant of aqueous H 2 O 2 remains unclear. To address this, three kinds of Sn-Beta zeolites are prepared by interzeolite transformation, structural reconstruction, and post-synthesis method to establish structure-property relationships. The physicochemical property and Sn coordinated state are investigated in detail. The existence of trace water in the reaction system negatively affects the conversion and product selectivity by competitive adsorption of water with reaction substrates and facilitated hydrolysis of ε-caprolactone, respectively. DFT calculation implies that kinetics dominates the conversion of cyclohexanone → ε-caprolactone → 6-hydroxycaproic acid. The structure-property relationship indicates that the cyclohexanone conversion and ε-caprolactone selectivity are closely related to the adsorption amounts of substrates and the diffusion performance of products, respectively, over Sn-Beta zeolite catalysts. Finally, the reusability and deactivation mechanism are analyzed. This study aims to provide guidance for designing efficient stannosilicate zeolite catalysts for B V oxidation through precisely modulating the zeolite's diffusion property.

The nanosize Beta-zeolites with hierarchical structures were time efficiently synthesized from natural diatomite and ball clays under 150 °C via a vapor-assisted method with the absence of solvents and F– anions. The Sn(IV) species were incorporated within frameworks of the presynthesized Beta-zeolite using a modified treatment of acid and tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH). The dealumination and reconstruction of zeolite frameworks were essential. A high atomic ratio of Si/Sn = 63.95 was obtained and the Sn(IV) species were in a tetrahedral coordination in the zeolite framework, as confirmed by various characterizations. The Sn-Beta zeolites show excellent performance in the Baeyer–Villiger oxidation reaction for the conversion of cyclohexanone to ε-caprolactone, with 63.3% conversion of cyclohexanone and superior selectivity for ε-caprolactone. The durability and stability of the catalyst was acceptable, as evidenced by a slight decrease in conversion of only 2.5% after 5 catalytic runs. These demonstrated a prototype practice in synthesizing Sn-Beta zeolites from natural ores and applicable catalysis in green chemistry.

Most of the current non-pharmacological treatment strategies for atherosclerosis (AS) suffer from poor penetration into the plaque and only aim at a certain factor in its formation process, resulting in limited therapeutic effect. Herein, a kind of nanomotor with dual-mode propulsion is constructed, which is sensitive to higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the AS site and near-infrared (NIR) laser by the covalent binding and self-assembly of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and L-arginine (LA) with immobilization of Au nanoparticles. NIR laser irradiation can be used as a driving force and to ablate inflammatory macrophages through the photothermal effect. The nitric oxide (NO) released by the nanomotors can be used as another driving force and a therapeutic agent to promote endothelial repair in the plaque site. LA can eliminate ROS in the inflammatory site, and β-CD can promote the removal of cholesterol from foam cells. In particular, the two driving modes of nanomotors synergistically promote their aggregation and penetration in the plaque. This kind of nanomotor can regulate the microenvironment of AS in multiple ways, including combination therapy for endothelial repair, lipid clearance, and reducing ROS, which is expected to become a potential non-pharmacological strategy in the treatment of AS.

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is the leading cause of low back pain, affecting 619 million people worldwide in 2020, yet no effective disease-modifying therapy is clinically available to reverse its progression. Ferroptosis has been proven to be a core driver of IVDD by inducing injury to nucleus pulposus cells (NPCs). The regulatory role of cystathionine β-synthase (CBS) in IVDD and its underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the biological function of CBS in IVDD and elucidate the mechanism by which it regulates NPC ferroptosis. We found that CBS expression was significantly downregulated in degenerated human NP tissues and rat IVDD models and was negatively correlated with degeneration severity and ferroptosis activation. Functional assays showed that CBS knockdown markedly exacerbated TBHP-induced matrix metabolic imbalance, senescence, and ferroptosis in NPCs, while CBS overexpression effectively alleviated these pathological phenotypes. Transcriptomic analysis, biochemical validation, and pharmacological inhibition experiments implicated PI3K-AKT signaling in the ferroptosis-related effects associated with CBS modulation in NPCs. In vivo, S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) administration attenuated needle puncture-induced IVDD in rats, restored disc height and NP water content, and suppressed intradiscal ferroptosis. Because SAM has pleiotropic biological actions, these in vivo effects cannot be attributed exclusively to CBS. Collectively, our findings support a protective role for CBS against IVDD through suppression of NPC ferroptosis and implicate PI3K-AKT signaling as a contributing pathway.

In this paper, quaternized β-cyclodextrin–montmorillonite composite (QCD-MMT) was obtained and absorption properties of Cr(VI), methyl orange and p-nitrophenol were studied. QCD was prepared by 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). QCD-MMT was obtained by reaction between QCD and montmorillonite suspensions, which could be attributed to the montmorillonite cation ion exchange properties. β-CD cavities of this composite were expected to capture organic molecules through inclusion, while montmorillonite units acted as the adsorption sites for metals. QCD-MMT was characterized by FT-IR, elemental analysis, XRD, SEM-EDX, and TGA. Adsorptions of Cr(VI), methyl orange, and p-nitrophenol were highly dependent on adsorbent dose, initial concentration, temperature, contact time, and pH. Adsorption kinetics of Cr(VI), methyl orange, and p-nitrophenol followed the pseudo-second-order model. Meanwhile, adsorption of Cr(VI) fit better in the Freundlich model, inferring a multilayer adsorption, while the adsorption of methyl orange and p-nitrophenol fit better in Langmuir model, inferring a monolayer adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorptions were all endothermic process and could be spontaneous at given temperature range, except for Cr(VI), of which adsorption should be at much higher temperature. Overall, QCD-MMT exhibited potential for practical applications in the treatment of both metal ions and organic pollutants.

To address the low power output issue of Betavoltaic Batteries in practical applications, this paper proposes a novel isotope beta radiation energy conversion and storage system integrating a GaAs-based Betavoltaic Batteries with a low self-discharge lithium metal battery utilizing flake graphite. This system enables simultaneous collection, conversion, and storage of beta radiation energy. In experiments, we fabricated a lithium metal battery employing flake graphite as the cathode, lithium metal as the anode, and LiFSI in DME electrolyte supplemented with 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl(5CB) additive. This battery was then connected to the GaAs-based Betavoltaic Batteries. Experimental results demonstrate successful energy harvesting from the Betavoltaic Batteries alone, which effecttively powered an LCD display.

17β-estradiol (E2) ubiquitously exists in various water bodies with long-term endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic impacts on wildlife even at the trace level of ng L−1. However, it remains unclear how easy-to-degrade carbon sources alter E2 biodegradation patterns. In this study, E2 biodegradation by Sphingomonas sp. MCCC 1A06484 was investigated with regard to alternative carbon sources. Results showed that the bacterium preferentially utilized glucose, sodium succinate and sodium acetate over E2. Interestingly, the presence of these preferred nutrients increased the E2 removal efficiency by 20.1%. Furthermore, a positive relation (p < 0.05) between the utilization of total organic carbon (TOC) and E2 was found. Using intracellular metabolomics by UHPLC-QTOF-MS, 11 up-regulated and 35 down-regulated metabolites (variable importance > 1, p < 0.05) were identified in the bacterium when cultivated with E2 under various carbon and nitrogen backgrounds. The E2 exposure contributed to metabolism changes of lipid, nucleotide, carbohydrate, amino acid and membrane transport, which were considered to play roles in the E2 metabolism. The up-regulated phosphatidylcholine might act as an indicator during the bacterial degradation of E2. Generally, this study contributes to an in-depth understanding of E2 biodegradation in complex environments with multiple carbon and nitrogen sources.
