Highly efficient Cr(VI) removal from industrial electroplating wastewater over Bi2S3 nanostructures prepared by dual sulfur-precursors: Insights on the promotion effect of sulfate ions

Xiong Tao,Xiaowu Hu,Zhipan Wen,Yin’an Ming,Jun Li,Yunling Liu,Rong Chen

In this work, different Bi 2 S 3 nanostructures were prepared from various single and dual sulfide precursors via a solvothermal method. It was found that Bi 2 S 3 nanostructures prepared from dual sulfur precursors of L -cysteine and ammonium sulfide exhibited highest Cr(VI) removal ability with maximum Cr(VI) removal capacity of 148.95 mg/g in Cr(VI) solution (pH = 2). More importantly, the removal capacity strikingly increased to 223.33 and 240.25 mg/g in two kinds of actual industrial electroplating wastewater. By analyzing the components of actual electroplating wastewater and the results of control experiments in the absence and presence of different ions in Cr(VI) solution, it was found that SO 4 2- played a critical role in the Cr(VI) removal over Bi 2 S 3 . The addition of SO 4 2- could promote the conversion of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) on the surface of Bi 2 S 3 , thus leading to the enhanced Cr(VI) removal ability in actual electroplating wastewater. The Bi 2 S 3 maintained its original Cr(VI) removal ability after four cycles in the electroplating wastewater, indicating the moderate reuse ability of the sample. This work not only demonstrated an highly efficient nanomaterials for the Cr(VI) removal in industrial electroplating wastewater, but also provided an insight on the influence of the components in wastewater on Cr(VI) removal.

A promising type-II/Z-scheme ternary MoS2/Bi2S3/Bi2WO6 heterostructure photoanode for photocatalytic fuel cell effective hydrogen production and electricity generation in organic wastewater

Aobo Wan,Ziwei Ren,Yun He,Yizhen Zhang,Shunxi Zhang,Min Tu,Jianfen Li,Ming Qiu

Developing efficient and stable bismuth-based photoelectrodes is one of the key points for producing green hydrogen in photocatalytic fuel cell (PFC). In this study, a PFC system with two photoelectrodes (a MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photoanode and a MoS 2 -Ni foam photocathode) was established for the first time. The ternary Bi 2 WO 6 -based composite photoanode was characterized as having not only the broad visible absorption region but also strong interactions between Bi 2 WO 6 , Bi 2 S 3 and MoS 2 . Additionally, the ternary composite photoanode exhibits excellent photoelectrochemical performance, achieving a photocurrent density reaches 3.2 mA/cm 2 , which is 17.78 times that of pure Bi 2 WO 6 . These observations can be explained by the creation of a type II/Z-scheme heterostructure of MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 photoanode. The Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulation proves the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between MoS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 , which offers an opportunity for facilitating the mitigation and separation of photoexcited charge. The dual-photoelectrode PFC system demonstrated an effective hydrogen production capacity, exhibiting an output of 18.32 μmol/cm 2 /h. At the same time, the power density was 0.1325 mW/cm 2 , exhibiting a 1.41-fold increase relative to the MoS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 -Pt PFC system. This work offers a novel method for building effective PFC systems that co-produce electricity and hydrogen.

Ionic liquid-employed synthesis of Bi2E3 (E = S, Se, and Te) hierarchitectures: The case of Bi2S3 with superior visible-light-driven Cr(VI) photoreduction capacity

Runming Wang,Gang Cheng,Zan Dai,Jie Ding,Yunling Liu,Rong Chen

A general ionic-assisted microwave-ultrasonic combined synthetic strategy was developed to fabricate Bi 2 E 3 (E   =   S, Se, and Te) hierarchitectures. To understand the crystal phase transformation and morphological evolution of Bi 2 S 3 hierarchical nanostructures, the fabrication of Bi 2 S 3 hierarchitectures was investigated by varying sulfidation time and chlorination time. A topotactic transformation from BiOCl microsphere to Bi 2 S 3 hierarchitectures was proposed. It was found that the structure, size, and morphology of Bi 2 S 3 hierarchitectures could be delicately engineered by varying chlorination time, alkyl chain length, and concentration of ionic liquid. Moreover, the as-prepared Bi 2 S 3 hierarchitectures displayed superior capacity of Cr(VI) photoreduction to P25 and irregular Bi 2 S 3 nanostructures under visible light irradiation. Effects of morphology, pH value of reaction system, Cr(VI) concentration, and catalyst dosage on the Cr(VI) photoreduction capacity of Bi 2 S 3 hierarchitectures were also discussed. The enhancement of photoreduction capacity is not only attributed to the intrinsic good electron transfer ability of Bi 2 S 3 , but also to synergetic effects of special architectures, wide photoresponse range, high light photoadsorption, high BET surface area and good electron-hole separation performance. The systematic condition experiments and Cr(VI) photoreduction in electroplating and tannery wastewater experiments further demonstrated that the hierarchical Bi 2 S 3 nanospheres can be used in the actual Cr(VI)-containing wastewater treatment.

Coupling with a narrow-band-gap semiconductor for enhancement of visible-light photocatalytic activity: preparation of Bi2S3/g-C3N4 and application for degradation of RhB

Xinshan Rong,Fengxian Qiu,Jie Yan,Hao Zhao,Xiaolu Zhu,Dongya Yang

A coupled system for the photodegradation of Rhodamine B dye was realized using a Bi2S3/g-C3N4 composite as a photocatalyst under visible light irradiation. The Bi2S3/g-C3N4 composite was prepared by a hydrothermal method and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Compared with pure g-C3N4, the Bi2S3/g-C3N4 sample exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic activity and the best photocatalytic efficiency is 3.68 times more than that of pure g-C3N4. The obtained results indicate that a coupled system of Bi2S3 and g-C3N4 could overcome the drawback of low photocatalytic efficiency brought by electron–hole recombination and a narrow photoresponse range. On the basis of the corresponding energy band positions, the mechanism of photocatalytic activity enhancement was proposed.

Rational design of high visible light-harvesting photoelectrode for simultaneous detection of enrofloxacin residue markers with a dual-channel cathodic photoelectrochemical aptasensing approach

Peng Yuxin,Xie Wanting,Li Lan,Shi Qiang,Yang Xiaoyue,Liu Qian

It is imperative to develop convenient methodology to enable the simultaneous detection of enrofloxacin (ENR) residue markers coexisted in the aquatic environment. To this end, an efficient dual-channel photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing approach is presented for the detection of trace ENR residue markers simultaneously through a single signal acquisition. Primarily, cathodic PEC aptasensing platform with superior anti-interference capability and high sensitivity was designed and constructed on the basis of the high visible light-harvesting CuInS 2 photocathode and Bi 2 S 3 /C 3 N 4 photoanode; and the simultaneous detection of ENR residue markers was then realized by the spatial resolution of aptasensing interfaces. Additionally, systematic verification was performed to investigate the signal modulation mechanism and thermodynamic feasibility of the constructed PEC system, as well as the sensing signals acquired simultaneously endowed by the dual-channel mode. Under the optimal conditions, the developing aptasensing method had a wide linear range for the detection of ENR (0.1 nM–1 μM) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) (50 pM–0.5 μM) with detection limits of 24 pM and 15.5 pM, respectively. High degree of accuracy in the simultaneous detection of ENR residue markers in real water sample was also achieved, which presents a streamlined idea for the simultaneous detection of multiple contaminants in complex samples with a simple approach. Synthesis of a BiVO4/SnS2/Bi2S3 ternary heterojunction via ion exchange: Experimental and DFT study on the synergistic photocatalysis for Cr(VI) reduction and tetracycline degradation

Pengyu Zhang,Jinping Zhang,Yuan Cheng,Hongwei Wang,Minghui Tan,Yake Wang,Tong Zhang,Yunchao Mu,Joshi Mahesh Kumar,Xinli Li

In response to the rising severity of co-pollution from heavy metal ions and organic antibiotics in water, creating efficient synergistic removal technologies has become a critical research direction in environmental catalysis. In this study, a BiVO 4 /SnS 2 /Bi 2 S 3 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst with a broad spectral response was successfully constructed through a hierarchical construction strategy, using a hydrothermally synthesized BiVO 4 /SnS 2 binary heterojunction as the precursor, followed by in-situ growth of narrow-bandgap Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles via a room-temperature ion exchange method. Characterization results from XRD, TEM and XPS confirmed that SnS 2 nanosheets and Bi 2 S 3 nanoparticles were distributed on the BiVO 4 surface, forming a tightly contacted heterojunction interface. The sequential introduction of SnS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 significantly increased the specific surface area of the material (to 14.723 m 2 /g). Optical performance tests demonstrated that the ternary heterojunction exhibited substantially enhanced visible light absorption, with the bandgap narrowing to 2.21 eV. Electrochemical tests revealed a significant reduction in the interfacial charge transfer resistance and a marked improvement in the charge carrier separation efficiency. Photocatalytic performance evaluation indicated that under simulated solar irradiation, BV/SN/BS(1 h) achieved a Cr(VI) reduction rate constant (0.07032 min −1 ) over 15 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 and a TC degradation rate constant (0.00520 min −1 ) approximately 1.3 times higher. In the Cr(VI)-TC combined system, a significant synergistic degradation effect was observed, with the Cr(VI) reduction rate constant further increasing to 0.09252 min −1 and the TC degradation rate constant rising to 0.01471 min −1 . Notably, EPR tests did not detect •O 2 − or •OH radicals. DFT calculations combined with experimental characterization revealed the formation of a type-II heterojunction among BiVO 4 , SnS 2 and Bi 2 S 3 , in which electrons and holes migrate in opposite directions, achieving efficient charge carrier separation. Cr(VI) and TC act as mutual sacrificial agents during the reaction process, further enhancing the photocatalytic efficiency. This study provides a novel material construction strategy and theoretical basis for designing efficient photocatalytic systems aimed at the synergistic degradation of heavy metal-organic pollutants from complex water bodies.

Alkaline Phosphatase-Decorated Au Nanoparticles Immobilized on Bi2S3 Particles Combined with Ag2S Quantum Dots as a Photoelectrochemical Sensing Platform for Alkaline Phosphatase Activity and Fluoride Ions

Lili Zhao,Haoyu Chen,Jiawei Zhou,Peipei Li,Wenying Zhao,Xiaohua Zhu,Youyu Zhang,Meiling Liu

A photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform for the detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and its inhibitor F– ions was developed based on the Ag2S/Bi2S3 composite. The signal variation strategy was triggered by the in situ formation and consumption of the electron donor. Ag2S quantum dots (QDs) on the Bi2S3 surface effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers, leading to an enhanced photocurrent response. After ALP is immobilized on the Ag2S/Bi2S3 surface, the in situ catalyzed hydrolysis of l-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) appeared, resulting in the production of ascorbic acid (AA). AA acts as an electron donor, enhancing the photocurrent and offering a strategy for quantifying ALP activity. Sodium fluoride (NaF) induces a reduction in ALP activity, and by exposing the sensing platform to various concentrations of NaF, the inhibition of ALP can be identified. The developed PEC sensor demonstrates outstanding detection performance for NaF, featuring a linear concentration range from 100 pM to 20 μM and a low detection limit of 1.28 pM. The integration of Ag2S/Bi2S3 to the in situ formation of electron donors in PEC technology presents an innovative approach for detecting ALP activity and its inhibitors. This platform delivers enhanced sensitivity and selectivity, making it valuable for diverse applications in detecting enzyme activity and screening their inhibitors in biofluid and food samples.

An ultrasensitive free-of-electronic sacrificial agent photoelectrochemical aptasensor for the detection of dibutyl phthalate based on Z-scheme p-n Bi-doped BiOI/Bi2S3 heterojunction

Zhiquan An,Xiaoyu Jian,Wenjun Hong,Xilong Zhang,Jiateng Ma,Minjie Li,Bihong Zhang,Liang-Hong Guo

Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a common and outstanding plasticizer, exhibits estrogenic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic properties. It is easily liberated from plastic materials and pollutes aquatic ecosystems, endangering human health. Therefore, highly sensitive and selective DBP detection methods are necessary. In this work, a free-of-electronic sacrificial agent photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor for DBP detection was constructed using a novel Z-scheme Bi-doped BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 (Bi-BIS) p-n heterojunction. The Bi-BIS composites had higher visible-light absorption, charge transfer, and separation efficiency. This is attributed to the synergistic effect of the formation of Z-scheme p-n heterojunction between BiOI and Bi 2 S 3 , the plasma resonance effect of metallic Bi and photosensitization of Bi 2 S 3 , thus exhibiting large and stable photocurrent response in the absence of electron sacrificial agent, that was 10.4 and 6.4 times higher than that of BiOI and Bi 2 S 3 , respectively. Then, a DBP PEC aptasensor was constructed by modifying the DBP aptamer on the surface of the ITO/Bi-BIS electrode. The aptasensor demonstrated a broad linear range (2–500 pM) and a low detection limit (0.184 pM). What's more, because there is no interference from electronic sacrificial agent, the aptasensor exhibited excellent selectivity in real water samples. Therefore, the proposed PEC has considerable potential for DBP monitoring.

Sulfur doping induced 3D hierarchical porous BiOI–Bi2S3 S-scheme heterojunction with regulated oxygen vacancies for a four-pronged enhanced photocatalytic degradation towards four representative pollutants

Xiangdong Shi,Xiaoyun Qin,Xuanyu Yang,Xiangyu Wei,Ying Liu,Sihui Li,Guixia Liu,Jinxian Wang,Xiangting Dong,Fenghua Chen

It is challenging and still difficult to adjust and boost the catalytic performance of photocatalysts via the synergistic achievement of heteroatom doping, vacancies engineering, morphology regulation, and appropriate structural design. Herein, we developed an efficient method to synthesize 3D hierarchical porous BiOI–Bi 2 S 3 S-scheme heterojunction with oxygen vacancies (Ov-BBS) induced by sulfur doping and systematically investigated regulation of oxygen vacancies by sulfur doping and their effects on photocatalytic performance. Results showed that sulfur species promoted the formation of S-scheme heterojunction but depleted oxygen vacancies in Ov-BiOI. The optimal sulfur doped catalyst (Ov-BBS-0.1) exhibited excellent UV–vis light photocatalytic activity towards four representative pollutants, affording removal rate of 97.1 % for MB, 97.6 % for RhB, 99.4 % for Cr(VI), and 92.0 % for TC, respectively, which were higher than those of pristine Bi 2 S 3 , BiOI, Ov-BiOI, Ov-BiOI/Bi 2 S 3 mixture, Ov-BBS-0.05, and Ov-BBS-0.2. Deep characterizations and theoretical studies certified that the four-pronged enhancement strategy of 3D hierarchical porous structure, oxygen vacancies, sulfur doping and the constructed S-scheme heterojunction, not only enriched accessible active sites, but also promoted electronic polarization and modulated electronic structure, resulting in rapid separation and migration of photogenerated carriers. Moreover, considering the excellent stability and cyclic photocatalytic performance, the film prepared by pumping Ov-BBS dispersion was also satisfactory in the practical application of circulating sewage treatment. Overall, the present work provides a novel approach for the design of more photocatalysts with high efficiency.

In Situ Implantation of Bi2S3 Nanorods into Porous Quasi-Bi-MOF Architectures: Enabling Synergistic Dissociation of Borohydride for an Efficient and Fast Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol

Jing Jiang,Wei Wei,Ying Tang,Shiyu Yang,Xinzhi Wang,Ying Xu,Lunhong Ai

Catalytic hydrogenation reduction based on sodium borohydride (NaBH4) has gained attention as an appealing “one-stone-two-birds” approach for the simultaneous elimination of nitroaromatic pollutants and the production of high-value aminoaromatics under mild conditions. However, the slow kinetics of NaBH4 dissociation on the surface of catalysts restrict the catalytic hydrogenation reduction efficiency. Herein, we report an intelligent localized sulfidation strategy for an in situ implantation of Bi2S3 nanorods within quasi-Bi-MOF architectures (Bi2S3@quasi-Bi-MOF) by fine-tuning the pyrolysis temperature. In this novel Bi2S3@quasi-Bi-MOF, the porous quasi-Bi-MOF enables efficient adsorption of BH4– and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), while Bi2S3 facilitates the BH4– dissociation to form Hads* species adsorbed on the catalyst surface. Benefiting from the synergistic structure, Bi2S3@quasi-Bi-MOF exhibits excellent performance for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP, delivering a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 1.67 × 10–4 mmol mg–1 min–1 and an extremely high normalized rate constant (knor) of 435298 s–1 g–1. The kinetic analysis and electrochemical tests indicate that this catalytic hydrogenation reduction follows the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism. This study enriches the synthetic strategy of MOF-based derivatives and offers a new catalytic platform for hydrogenation reduction reactions.

Visible-light-driven Z-scheme rGO/Bi2S3–BiOBr heterojunctions with tunable exposed BiOBr (102) facets for efficient synchronous photocatalytic degradation of 2-nitrophenol and Cr(VI) reduction

Hui Li,Fang Deng,Yang Zheng,Li Hua,Chunhua Qu,Xubiao Luo

Fabrication of Z-scheme heterojunctions and crystal facet engineering are effective strategies for enhancing visible-light photocatalytic redox ability. Visible-light-responsive Z-scheme reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/Bi2S3–BiOBr heterojunctions with a tunable exposed BiOBr (102) facet and high stability were prepared by a one-pot solvothermal strategy. A graphene oxide (GO) solution acts as a rGO precursor and crystal facet controlling agent of BiOBr (102). The optimized 1% rGO/Bi2S3–BiOBr catalyst shows a much higher photocatalytic activity in degrading a single-component 2-nitrophenol (2NP) solution and a reducing single-component Cr(VI) solution than Bi2S3, BiOBr and Bi2S3–BiOBr. In the mixture solution of 2NP and Cr(VI), 2NP degradation and Cr(VI) reduction occur simultaneously, and the Cr(VI) reduction efficiency and 2NP degradation efficiency reached 95% and 67%, respectively. The synergism of rGO/Bi2S3–BiOBr for simultaneous 2NP degradation and Cr(VI) reduction can be attributed to the efficient production of electrons and reactive oxygen species. This work sheds light on the design of facet-dependent Z-scheme photocatalysts to advance photocatalytic redox capability.

Two birds with one Stone: Fabrication of Bi2S3/f-MWCNTs nanocomposites for dual-functional gas sensor towards NH3 and acetic acid detection and discrimination at room temperature

Zhikun Wang,Zhihua Zhao,Chen Chen,Guixin Jin,Xiaoqing Shen,Zhigang Shao,Lan Wu

Environmental safety monitoring has significantly benefited from the incorporation of gas sensors. Given the pernicious effects of ammonia and acetic acid gases on the environment and human health, it is imperative to develop a room temperature dual-functional gas sensor capable of simultaneously detecting both these gases. In this research endeavor, acid-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) were integrated with Bi 2 S 3 through a hydrothermal approach, leading to the fabrication of a Bi 2 S 3 /f-MWCNTs-2 nanocomposite-based chemoresistive gas sensor. The results demonstrate that the Bi 2 S 3 /f-MWCNTs-2 sensor exhibits a response value of 52.7 % towards 100 ppm NH 3 at room temperature (25℃), displaying a declining resistance curve upon exposure to the target gas. Similarly, for 100 ppm CH 3 COOH under ambient conditions (25℃), the sensor records a response value of 72.55 %, accompanied by a rising resistance curve when in contact with CH 3 COOH gas. The distinctive feature of this dual-functional sensor lies in its ability to detect opposing transient response curves for the two gases, which is crucial for distinguishing between different gases. Furthermore, the sensor boasts swift response recovery, excellent repeatability, and robust stability. This study underscores the promising potential of the Bi 2 S 3 /f-MWCNTs-2 nanocomposite sensor in applications such as environmental monitoring.
