Dual defect regulation of BiOCl halogen layer enables photocatalytic O2 activation into singlet oxygen for refractory aromatic pollutant removal

Yandong Sun,Weiguang Han,Fangyuan Zhang,Hui Li,Ziqi Zhang,Xue Zhang,Boxiong Shen,Sheng-Qi Guo,Tianyi Ma

The generation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) based on photocatalytic activation O 2 is considered to have important application prospects in purifying refractory organic pollutants in water. However, the uncertain dual pathway transformation of activated O 2 severely limits the generation of 1 O 2 . In this work, we show a robust BiOCl with dual defects (adjacent I-substitution defect and Cl vacancy) in halogen layer for the selective activation of O 2 to generate 1 O 2 . Combining experiments and theoretical calculations, we confirm that dual defects are beneficial in optimizing band structures, improving carrier separation efficiency, and promoting O 2 adsorption and activation. More importantly, it is confirmed that dual defects can directionally convert O 2 into 1 O 2 by increasing the thermodynamic conversion energy barrier of non- 1 O 2 conversion pathways and serving as a necessary site for 1 O 2 generation with dual functions of oxidation and reduction. Applying dual defect modified BiOCl to the removal of refractory aromatic pollutants in water, it is found that it has efficient and stable photocatalytic degradation efficiency and broad environmental adaptability. This work not only provides in-depth insights into the mechanism of photocatalytic activation of O 2 to selective produce 1 O 2 , but also lays the foundation for further development of highly active photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy conversion.

Transition of BiOCl nanosheet into cotton-like clusters for piezoelectric enhanced photocatalytic degradation of dye and photocatalytic hydrogen production

Zheng Luo,C.P. Leo,Fengbo Guo,Xin-ya Zhao

Photocatalysts offer sustainable treatment of water pollutants using light and they can be further piezoelectrically enhanced. As a highly efficient, stable, and environmentally friendly photocatalytic material, bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) exhibits significant advantages in the degradation of rhodamine B, but its morphology can be easily affected by solvothermal synthesis. In this study, the solvent effects of ethylene glycol and water were compared in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) through solvothermal and hydrothermal reactions, respectively. X-ray diffraction patterns, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed the formation of BiOCl nanosheets with numerous oxygen-rich vacancies. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images showed circular plate-like structures or spherical clusters with a diameter of approximately 1 μm when BiOCl was prepared using water or without the addition of PVP, respectively. The plate-like structure and the spherical clusters transformed into cotton-like spherical clusters assembled from ultra-thin nanosheets with diameters ranging from 20 to 50 nm after using ethylene glycol and PVP. UV–vis absorption spectra showed that BiOCl with a cotton-like spherical structure could achieve higher dye degradation efficiency than BiOCl with a plate-like or spherical structure. The piezoelectric-enhanced photodegradation rates of rhodamine B were significantly increased by about 22 times since the piezoelectric photocurrent intensities rose nearly three times and the generation of •O 2 − and •OH increased. The photocatalytic hydrogen production was improved by 55.3 % and sustained up to 4 cycles due to the conduction band reduction, as proven by the Mott-Schottky plot.

Dual engineering of oxygen vacancies and Bi metal on BiOCl nanosheets for synergistically enhancing far-red emission of Eu3+

Guofeng Zhang,Rui Hu,Yichao Wang,Sicheng Gao,Zhaoyi Yin,Zhiguo Song,Jianbei Qiu,Yongjin Li

Realizing efficient far-red luminescence ( 5 D 0 → 7 F 4 transitions) from Eu 3+ ions in conventional hosts remains challenging due to the intrinsically limited energy transfer pathways. Herein, a novel dual-engineering strategy is proposed to synergistically increase the far-red emission of Eu 3+ within BiOCl nanosheets by co-introducing plasmonic metallic Bi and oxygen vacancies (OVs). Metallic Bi nanoparticles and the OVs are simultaneously incorporated into BiOCl:Eu nanosheets via a tailored solvothermal method, followed by in situ reduction. The synergistic interplay between the OVs and localized surface plasmon resonance of Bi drastically enhances the excitation harvesting and efficiency of energy transfer to the Eu 3+ activators. Consequently, the far-red emission intensity at 700 nm is remarkably enhanced 6.7-fold under 313 nm excitation, representing an unprecedented increase compared to that of pristine BiOCl:Eu. Furthermore, the precipitation of metallic Bi significantly enhances the thermal stability of the luminescence. This study provides fundamental insights into the synergistic plasmon-defect interactions within 2D semiconductors and establishes a promising pathway for use in developing high-performance far-red phosphors for application in advanced phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes.

Self-doping induced oxygen vacancies and lattice strains for synergetic enhanced upconversion luminescence of Er3+ ions in 2D BiOCl nanosheets

Tianhui Wang,Liang Xu,Zhijie Wu,Yongjin Li,Zhaoyi Yin,Jin Han,Zhengwen Yang,Jianbei Qiu,Zhiguo Song

Rare earth (RE) ions combined with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors can exhibit unexpected optical properties. However, fluorescence quenching has always been inevitable due to defects associated with the synthesis and doping of 2D materials. In this work, we reported an efficient upconversion (UC) enhancement of Er3+ doped BiOCl nanosheets, utilizing a defect engineering strategy conversely rather than eliminating defects. Experiments and theoretical calculations provide evidence that oxygen vacancies (OVs) and lattice strain are simultaneously formed in the BiOCl:Er3+ nanosheets through self-doping of Cl− ions. Under 980 nm excitation, samples doped with 300 mol% Cl− ions exhibit the best luminescent emission, and the green and red UC emissions are enhanced 3.5 and 15 times, respectively. We showed that the OVs in the 2D semiconductor can act as energy bridges to transfer charges to the Er3+ energy level, enriching the electron population at the excited levels; while, the lattice strain enhances the energy transfer and charge accumulation, which synergistically enhance the UC luminescence. This research provides a new insight into the development of defect engineering for UC PL in 2D nanomaterials.

Boosting the photocatalytic efficiency of sulfur doped BiOCl via visible light and advanced oxidative processes integration for organic pollutant removal

Shihui Zang,Yusong Pan,Qianqian Liu,Run Huang

S-doped BiOCl nanosheets with tunable band structure were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. • Bifunctional vis/PMS system was constructed, enabling synergistic photocatalysis and PMS activation. • Enhanced performance is attributed to improved visible-light absorption and efficient charge separation. • Non-•OH dominated pathway involving •O 2 − , 1 O 2 , and h + governs the degradation process. Elemental doping was considered as an effective strategy for modulating the band structure of semiconductors. In this study, Sulfur doped BiOCl nanosheet catalysts were prepared by a solvothermal method and systematically characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM, TEM, XPS, and DRS to analyze their crystalline structurdeclaration. e, morphology, surface chemistry, and optical characteristics. The optimized S-doped BiOCl (BiOCl-S) catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance in the vis/PMS synergistic system. Experimental results validated that the optimal degradation efficiency of the BiOCl-S catalysts was achieved at 4% S-doping, beyond which further increasing the S content led to a decline in activity. Under optimal condition, the BiOCl-S catalyst achieved 97.08% RhB removal within 25 min in the vis/PMS synergistic system, representing a substantial improvement over individual visible-light (32.55%) or PMS-only (48.69%) systems. Cyclic tests validated the outstanding stability of the catalyst. The key reactive species responsible for pollutant degradation, as identified through radical trapping experiments, were found to be holes (h + ), superoxide radicals (•O₂ − ), and singlet oxygen ( 1 O₂). Mechanistic investigation revealed that the enhanced catalytic activity originated from two effects such as enhanced visible-light absorption capability and effective activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through bismuth ion mediation. This dual-function mechanism enables efficient pollutant degradation through combined photocatalytic and advanced oxidation pathways.

BiOCl anchored porous g-C3N4 S-scheme heterojunction with enhanced bifunctional photocatalytic performance for RhB degradation and Cr(VI) reduction

Jiayang Zhao,Gang Liu,Xinmei Liu,Limin Dong,Dongbo Wang,Fei Li,Yuewu Huang,Zhitao Yang,Wenlong Yang,Liancheng Zhao

The practical implementation of semiconductor photocatalysis is often impeded by three key challenges: restricted light absorption, rapid recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, and inadequate stability in complex aqueous environments. In this work, a g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully fabricated. The synergistic effects of its porous structure, oxygen vacancies, and Bi–N bonds significantly boost the photocatalytic performance. Photoelectrochemical analyses reveal that the heterojunction not only extends the optical absorption edge to the visible region but also enhances the photocurrent response and reduces charge transfer resistance, leading to efficient separation and transport of photogenerated carriers. Under irradiation with a 300 W xenon lamp equipped with a 420 nm cutoff filter, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl heterojunction exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and reduction of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) relative to pristine g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl. Notably, the g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl-2 sample achieved 99.12% removal of 20 mg/L Cr(VI) within 25 min, with a reaction rate constant of 0.10098 min −1 —1.88-fold and 2.72-fold higher than those of pristine BiOCl and g-C 3 N 4 , respectively.Environmental adaptability studies revealed that this heterojunction exhibited optimal Cr(VI) reduction performance under acidic conditions (pH=3). Its photocatalytic reduction efficiencies in deionized water, tap water, river water, and industrial wastewater were 97%, 87.6%, 81.4%, and 73.1%, respectively, highlighting its strong practical applicability in diverse aqueous environments. Common ion influence experiments further confirmed that NH 4 + promotes the reduction process, while CO 3 2- and PO 4 3- inhibit the reaction due to the alkaline environment generated by hydrolysis. Cl - , SO 4 2- , and Ca 2+ had negligible effects. Cycling tests revealed that g-C 3 N 4 /BiOCl-2 maintained over 85% photocatalytic activity after five cycles, exhibiting superior durability compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 (11.1%) and BiOCl (39.7%). This work enhance the photocatalytic reduction of heavy metals in complex aqueous environments through the construction of a highly efficient and stable S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, thereby offering theoretical and experimental foundations for the degradation of industrial dye pollutants.

Synergistic enhancement of photocatalytic performance in 2D layered BiOCl through high exposure of intrinsic symmetric electric fields and oxygen vacancies

Manyu Liu,Xinyu Zhao,Keyi Han,Yangfan Du,Yingbin Liang,Xin Zhang,Shifeng Wang,Dongye Zhao,Yifang Liang,Yong Li

Environmental pollution control represents a major challenge for modern society, and photocatalytic technology has emerged as a promising approach to address this issue due to its eco-friendly nature and high efficiency. However, the efficiency of photocatalysis is constrained by the rapid recombination and inefficient migration of photogenerated charge carriers. This study proposes an innovative strategy to synergistically enhance photocatalytic performance by maximizing the exposure of intrinsic symmetric electric fields (ISEFs) in two-dimensional layered bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) and introducing oxygen vacancies (OVs). BiOCl nanosheets with enhanced ISEFs exposure and abundant OVs were successfully synthesized via a hydrothermal method by regulating the ethylene glycol-to-water ratio. The results revealed that exposure of ISEFs significantly reduced the exciton binding energy, thereby facilitating efficient separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Concurrently, the introduction of OVs generated new electronic states near the Fermi level, providing additional pathways for electron transitions, which narrowed the bandgap and enhanced light absorption. Furthermore, OVs shifted the d-band center closer to the Fermi level, significantly enhancing the adsorption capacity for reactant molecules. Experimental results demonstrated that the optimized sample BOC-5 achieved 99 % degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) within 15 min, exhibiting a 55-fold enhancement in performance compared to the sample prepared in pure water.

Efficient doping to synthesize high-performance Co/Fe-BiOCl photocatalyst assisted by the ion release from novel CoFe2O4 nanofiber reservoir

Jun Liu,Hui Wang,Meng-Jie Chang,Wen-Juan Li,Wen-Yao Zhu,Ge Bai,Liu-Qing Yang,Hui-Ling Du,Zhen-Min Luo,Ting Shang

Metal ion doping is an efficient method to achieve high photocatalytic performance of semiconductors. However, the current synthetic methods by using inorganic salts as doped sources in the precursor reaction system might suffer from ion waste and second pollution. Herein, we developed a novel method by employing electrospun nanofibers as ion reservoir to release metal ions for the synthesis of ion-doped semiconductors with high photocatalytic activity . As demonstrated, Co/Fe co-doped BiOCl photocatalyst (Co/Fe-BOC) was facilely prepared in the presence of CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers as Co and Fe ion reservoir via a simple solvothermal method . Compared with BiOCl, the resulted Co/Fe-BOC shows increased specific surface area, visible light response as well as separation and transportation efficiencies of photogenerated carriers. Thus, the Co/Fe-BOC exhibits significantly enhanced visible light photocatalytic activity to degrade 99.4% rhodamine B (RhB) within 4 min. This new doping approach not only avoids the ion waste and pollution during the reaction process but also facilitates the separation of the photocatalyst. Moreover, the CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers could be repeatedly used as ion reservoir to prepare high-performance Co/Fe-BOC. This nanofiber-based ion doping approach provides a novel, universal and promising insight to obtain doped semiconductors with high photocatalytic activity.

Enhancing Photocatalytic Degradation via the Synergetic Effect of Vacancies and Built-In Potential in a BiOCl/BiVO4 p–n Heterojunction

Lulu Zhu,Baiyu Zhang,Qian Su,Runlu Liu,Jingyi Lin,Hua Wang,Shenmin Zhu,Yao Li

Photoinduced charge separation and surface reactions are essential for ensuring high quantum efficiency of the photochemical and photophysical processes. BiVO4-based heterojunctions are promising materials for high-performance photocatalysts; however, their photocatalytic performance is significantly lower than the theoretical limit due to the sluggish water oxidation dynamics and rapid recombination of charge carriers on the catalyst surface. To address these issues, oxygen vacancies (OVs) are introduced to a rationally designed BiVO4-based heterojunction using built-in potential and gradient OVs to promote the separation of carriers and increase the photocatalytic activity. The heterojunctions with OVs exhibit a 2-fold increase in the photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation compared with that of pristine BiVO4. Additionally, density functional theory is applied to elucidate the synergistic mechanism of light absorption and charge separation in BiOCl/BiVO4 p–n heterojunction photocatalysts containing vacancies. The obtained results demonstrate a synergistic effect of vacancies and the built-in potential, providing a pathway for defect engineering in photocatalytic processes.

High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Ammonia Synthesis by Facet Orientation-Supported Heterojunction Cu2O@BiOCl[100] Boosted by Double Built-In Electric Fields

Lianyang Zhang,Yue Meng,Hui Shen,Jinhua Li,Chunfang Yang,Bo Xie,Shengjie Xia

In this work, the advantages of in situ loading, heterojunction construction, and facet regulation were integrated based on the poly-facet-exposed BiOCl single crystal, and a facet-oriented supported heterojunction of Cu2O and BiOCl was fabricated (Cu2O@BiOCl[100]). The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (pNRR) activity of Cu2O@BiOCl[100] was as high as 181.9 μmol·g–1·h–1, which is 4.09, 7.13, and 1.83 times that of Cu2O, BiOCl, and Cu2O@BiOCl-ran (Cu2O randomly supported on BiOCl). Combined with the results of the photodeposition experiment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization, and DFT calculation, the mechanism of Cu2O@BiOCl[100] for pNRR was discussed. When Cu2O directionally loaded on the [100] facet of BiOCl, electrons generated by Cu2O will be transmitted to the [100] facet of BiOCl through Z-scheme electron transmission. Due to the directional separation characteristics of charge in BiOCl, the electrons transmitted from Cu2O are enriched on the [001] facet of BiOCl, which will together with the original electrons generated by pristine BiOCl act on pNRR, thus greatly improving the activity of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis. Thus, a new construction scheme of biphasic semiconductor heterojunction was proposed, which provides a reference research idea for designing and synthesizing high-performance photocatalysts for nitrogen reduction.

Enhancing the photocatalytic performance of the g-C3N4/BiOCl heterojunction in gaseous toluene degradation via K+ decoration in g-C3N4

Fan Fu,Jian Yang,Hao Xu,Yang Li,Shaobo Cao,Kang Da,Wenting Chen,Ximei Fan

Doping or constructing heterojunctions by coupling with other semiconductors are effective methods to improve the photocatalytic performance of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) in toluene degradation. Herein, thermally condensed synthesized K-doped g-C 3 N 4 (KCN) is coupled with BiOCl via a hydrothermal method, and KCN/BOC heterostructures are obtained. The optimal KCN 1 /BOC heterojunction exhibits approximately 85% removal of toluene after 150 min irradiation under simulated solar light, which is 12.4 and 9.6 times higher than those of g-C 3 N 4 and BiOCl, respectively. The superior performance of KOH-modified g-C 3 N 4 is attributed to the electron transfer channels formed by the insertion of K + into the g-C 3 N 4 layers, which facilitate efficient charge separation and rapid electron transfer. Furthermore, the KCN/BOC heterostructure with the Z-scheme further improves the surface charge separation efficiency, which plays a critical role in the photocatalytic process. This work provides a facile and promising strategy for dual-strategy modification of g-C 3 N 4 to enhance photocatalytic degradation activity.

Oxygen-Deficient BiOCl Combined with L-Buthionine-Sulfoximine Synergistically Suppresses Tumor Growth through Enhanced Singlet Oxygen Generation under Ultrasound Irradiation

Hui Wang,Weitao Yang,Kexin Bian,Weiwei Zeng,Xiao Jin,Ruizhuo Ouyang,Yan Xu,Chenyu Dai,Shuang Zhou,Bingbo Zhang

Excess generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) based on sensitizers under ultrasound (US) excitation can cause the death of tumor cells via oxidative damage, but sonosensitizers are largely unexplored. Herein, oxygen-deficient black BiOCl (B-BiOCl) nanoplates (NPs) are reported, with post-treatment on conventional BiOCl by simple UV excitation, showing stronger singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) generation than commercial TiO 2 nanoparticles and their derivatives under US irradiation. Moreover, L-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO), a GSH biosynthesis inhibitor, is incorporated into B-BiOCl NPs. The authors find that BSO can be released owing to the degradation of B-BiOCl NPs in the presence of acid and GSH, which are overexpressed in tumors. The results show that BSO/B-BiOCl-PEG NPs have a multifunctional synergistic effect on improving ROS production. In particular, BiOCl has remarkable near-infrared light absorption after UV treatment and is good for photoacoustic imaging that can guide subsequent sonodynamic therapy. This work shows that just with a simple oxygen deficiency treatment, strong 1 O 2 generation can be provided to a conventional material under US irradiation and, interestingly, this effect can be amplified by using a small inhibitor BSO, and this is clearly demonstrated in cell and mice experiments.
