Electrochemical urea synthesis by co-reduction of CO2 and nitrate with FeII-FeIIIOOH@BiVO4 heterostructures

Hua-Qing Yin,Zuo-Shu Sun,Qiu-Ping Zhao,Lu-Lu Yang,Tong-Bu Lu,Zhi-Ming Zhang

Traditional urea synthesis under harsh conditions is usually associated with high energy input and has aroused severe environmental concerns. Electrocatalytic C–N coupling by converting nitrate and CO 2 into urea under ambient conditions represents a promising alternative process. But it was still limited by the strong competition between nitrate electrochemical reduction (NO 3 ER) and CO 2 electrochemical reduction (CO 2 ER). Here, Fe II -Fe III OOH@BiVO 4 - n heterostructures are constructed through hydrothermal synthesis and exhibited superior performance toward urea electrosynthesis with NO 3 − and CO 2 as feedstocks. The optimized urea yield and Faradaic efficiency over Fe II -Fe III OOH@BiVO 4 -2 can reach 13.8 mmol h −1 g −1 and 11.5% at −0.8 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode, which is much higher than that of bare FeOOH (3.2 mmol h −1 g −1 and 1.3%), pristine BiVO 4 (2.0 mmol h −1 g −1 and 5.4%), and the other Fe II -Fe III OOH@BiVO 4 - n ( n  = 1, 3, 5) heterostructures. Systematic experiments have verified that BiVO 4 and FeOOH are subreaction active sites towards simultaneous CO 2 ER and NO 3 ER, respectively, achieving co-activation of CO 2 and NO 3 − on Fe II -Fe III OOH@BiVO 4 -2. Moreover, the urea synthesis via the *CO and NO* intermediates and C–N coupling was confirmed by the in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This work not only alleviates the CO 2 emission and nitrate pollution but also presents an efficient catalyst for synergistic catalysis towards sustainable urea synthesis.

Facet-dependent CuO/{010}BiVO4 S-scheme photocatalyst enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation for efficient norfloxacin removal

Tongyu Han,Haifeng Shi,Yigang Chen

Rapid recombination of charge carriers and sluggish Cu 2+ /Cu + conversion rate in Cu-based photocatalysts hinder the improvement of the peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation efficiency. Herein, a novel S-scheme system was successfully built through hydrothermal and in-situ calcination methods to activate PMS for norfloxacin (NOR) degradation, which combined CuO with BiVO 4 (BVO) containing surface heterojunction. The UV–vis spectra manifested that BVO displayed excellent visible light absorption performance after compounding with CuO, and the light absorption threshold of CuO/BVO was about 600 nm. Thanks to the existence of surface heterojunction in BVO, the photoinduced electrons, and holes would transfer to {010} and {110} facets, respectively. The construction of S-scheme heterojunction further facilitated the accumulation of electrons on CuO, thus realizing the spatial separation of charge carriers. In addition, the electrons gathered on the CuO expedited the Cu 2+ /Cu + cycle, thereby improving the activation efficiency of PMS. On this basis, the NOR removal capacity of 5CuO/BVO composites was obviously enhanced, which was 3.65 and 2.45 times that of CuO and BVO. Moreover, the influence of ambient pH and PMS dosage on the photocatalytic performance of CuO/BVO was investigated. Through the analysis of NOR degradation pathways and degradation products, it was found that the toxicity threat of NOR to the environment was reduced during the degradation process. According to the XPS results, forming the S-scheme heterojunction accelerated the Cu 2+ /Cu + redox cycle during the PMS activating process. Meanwhile, photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) analysis demonstrated that the CuO/BVO composites exhibited eminent ability for charge separation. The possible mechanism of charge transfer was assumed by exploring reactive species and the energy band structure of catalysts. To sum up, this research provides a new perspective on boosting PMS activation to purify antibiotics in water.

2D Piezoelectric BiVO4 Artificial Nanozyme with Adjustable Vanadium Vacancy for Ultrasound Enhanced Piezoelectric/Sonodynamic Therapy

Ruoxi Zhao,Haixia Zhu,Lili Feng,Yanlin Zhu,Bin Liu,Chenghao Yu,Shili Gai,Piaoping Yang

Increasing the yield of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to enhance oxidative stress in cells is an eternal goal in cancer therapy. In this study, BiVO 4 artificial nanozyme is developed with adjustable vanadium vacancy for ultrasound (US) enhanced piezoelectric/sonodynamic therapy. Under US excitation, the vanadium vacancy-rich BiVO 4 nanosheets (abbreviated V v -r BiVO 4 NSs) facilitate the generation of a large number of electrons to improve the ROS yield. Meanwhile, the mechanical strain imposed by US irradiation makes the V v -r BiVO 4 NSs display a typical piezoelectric response, which tilts the conduction band to be more negative and the valance band more positive than the redox potentials of O 2 /O 2 •− and H 2 O/·OH, boosting the efficiency of ROS generation. Both density functional theory calculations and experiments confirm that the introduction of cationic vacancy can improve the sonodynamic effect. As expected, V v -r BiVO 4 NSs have better peroxidase enzyme catalytic and glutathione depletion activities, resulting in increased intracellular oxidative stress. This triple amplification strategy of oxidative stress induced by US substantially inhibits the growth of cancer cells. The work may open an avenue to achieve a synergetic therapy by introducing cationic vacancy, broadening the biomedical use of piezoelectric materials.

Construction of an La-BiVO4/O-Doped g-C3N4 Heterojunction Photocatalyst Embedded in Electrospinning Nanofibers

Ruixin Song,Shifei Kang,Liangtao Yao,Lulu Zheng,Dechao Yu,Dawei Zhang

BiVO4 has been widely used in the field of photocatalysis due to its nontoxic and moderate band gap. However, single BiVO4 has the disadvantages of a high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and weak response to visible light, inhibiting its photocatalytic applications. To explore viable solutions, a hybrid material composed of lanthanum-doped bismuth vanadate (La-BiVO4) and oxygen-doped porous graphite carbon nitride (O-doped g-C3N4), i.e., La-BiVO4/O-doped g-C3N4 powder, was prepared by a facile hydrothermal reaction and low-temperature calcination. Then, the powder was loaded on polyacrylonitrile nanofibers (NFs) through the electrospinning fiber technique. Various surface science characterizations, including transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen absorption and desorption analysis, confirmed the successful synthesis of a mesoporous heterojunction material. The La3+-doping as well as the porous morphologies and larger specific surface area of the O-doped g-C3N4 ultimately improve the photocatalytic abilities via a proposed Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism. The roles of La3+-doping and morphology modification in promoting the separation of the photogenerated carriers and broadening the optical absorption range were experimentally discussed. The RhB degradation experiment indicated that the La-BiVO4/O-doped g-C3N4 powder has excellent photocatalytic activity, which is about 2.85 and 2 times higher than that of the pure BiVO4 and O-doped g-C3N4, respectively. Meanwhile, the La-BiVO4/O-doped g-C3N4 NF shows good stability and recoverability after a 10-cycle testing. Such a hybrid photocatalyst with a proposed Z-scheme heterojunction mechanism and good plasticity might pave a feasible way to fabricate a new library of photocatalysts.

Bifunctional photoelectrochemical sensor based on Bi/Bi2S3/BiVO4 for detecting hexavalent chromium and hydrogen peroxide

Di Cheng,Huimin Wu,Chuanqi Feng,Yu Ding,He Mei

In this study, a bifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor based on Bi/Bi 2 S 3 /BiVO 4 (Bi-BSV) is prepared by one-step hydrothermal method . Firstly, the results from experiments show that the PEC performances of Bi 2 S 3 /BiVO 4 -X (BSV-X, X = m(Bi 2 S 3 )/m(Bi 2 S 3 + BiVO 4 )) are higher than those of Bi 2 S 3 and BiVO 4 , and BSV-15% has the highest PEC performance. To further improve the PEC properties of BSV-15%, metal-Bi was introduced to the synthesis of Y-Bi-BSV-15% (Y represents the amount of glucose added). Moreover, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV–vis DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) demonstrate that 0.3-Bi-BSV-15% has the widest visible light absorption range and strongest photogenerated carriers separation capability among all composites. Based on the above results, the PEC sensor based on the 0.3-Bi-BSV-15% for detecting hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is built. The results exhibit that 0.3-Bi-BSV-15% has a wider detection range of 2–230 µM and a lower detection limit of 0.094 µM for Cr (VI) detection. While for H 2 O 2 detection, the detection range and detection limit are 1–130,000 µM and 0.089 µM, respectively. Therefore, 0.3-Bi-BSV-15% has potential application in Cr (VI) and H 2 O 2 detection.

Meng Wang,Qiwen Wang,Xiaohong Wang,Shengtian Wang

An efficient electrochemical sensor based on nitrogen functionalized biochar (N-BC) and BiVO 4 hybrid nanocomposites was prepared, and used for simultaneous detection of furazolidone (FZD) and chloramphenicol (CAP) with highly sensitive and selective in food sample. The N-BC was obtained by acid activation method which using biomass waste (rice halls) as the raw and processed material and urea as the nitrogen source, which was further mixed with BiVO 4 to synthesized N-BC/BiVO 4 composite. The surface morphology and structured properties were characterized by Scanning electron microscopic (SEM), Nitrogen (N 2 ) adsorption/desorption isotherms, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) patterns, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance studies of N-BC/BiVO 4 film on GCE showed that electron transfer rate in [Fe (CN) 6 ] 3−/4− solution was rapider than bare GCE, N-BC/GCE and BiVO 4 /GCE. The sensor was successfully used for the detection of FZD and CAP with wide linear ranges of 0.1–1600 μM for FZD and 0.1–3200 μM for CAP, low limit of detection of 0.053 μM for FZD and 0.087 μM for CAP (S/N = 3), respectively. In addition, the proposed sensor has shown good anti-interference ability, reproducibility and stability, and obtained satisfactory results for respective or simultaneous detection of FZD and CAP in milk sample.

A “turn-on” photoelectrochemical DNA biosensor based on charge transfer between BiVO4 and gold nanoparticles

Hemeiling Cai,Jing Sun,Zhichang Ma,Junwei Di

An enhanced charge transfer between BiVO 4 and Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) was utilized to design a “turn-on” photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor for sensitive detection of target DNA. The calcination of BiVO 4 on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrate was integrated with Au nanoparticles (NPs) labelled probe DNA (pDNA-AuNPs) as photoelectrode (ITO/BiVO 4 /pDNA-AuNPs). The cathodic photocurrent increased due to the coupling BiVO 4 with AuNPs, which acted as the blank signal of this PEC platform. The probe specifically recognized and captured the target DNA (tDNA) to form double strain DNA (dsDNA) after hybridization. The photocurrent intensity of the ITO/BiVO 4 /dsDNA-AuNPs photoelectrode further increased due to the enhancement of the charge transfer between BiVO 4 and AuNPs through dsDNA chain. This photocurrent enhancement was linear proportional to the logarithm of tDNA concentration. Based on this strategy, the PEC assay displayed a linear range from 1 aM to 10 pM and the detection limit was as low as 0.2 aM (S/N = 3). It provides a promising platform for ultrasensitive target DNA detection, and thus shows a great potential in genetic disease or cancer diagnostics and infectious pathogen detection.

The ClO· generation and chlorate suppression in photoelectrochemical reactive chlorine species systems on BiVO4 photoanodes

Xin Li,Miao Kan,Tian Wang,Zhixiao Qin,Ting Zhang,Xufang Qian,Yasutaka Kuwahara,Kohsuke Mori,Hiromi Yamashita,Yixin Zhao

Photoelectrochemical generation of reactive chlorine species (PEC-RCS) is a promising approach for wastewater treatment . However, the inevitable byproduct of harmful oxychloride (such as ClO 3 − and ClO 4 − ) severely limits the practical applications of full-spectrum solar-driven PEC-RCS systems. Herein, we investigated three typical photoelectrodes including TiO 2 , WO 3 and BiVO 4 for PEC-RCS system and the formation of RCS and toxic oxychlorides. In BiVO 4 photoelectrochemical cell, the concentration of ClO 3 − was lower than 0.2 mg/L and the ClO 4 − was undetectable within 2 h of reaction. In contrast, the concentrations of ClO 3 − were 2.3 mg/L and 2.7 mg/L in the widely used WO 3 and TiO 2 PEC-RCS processes, respectively, which exceeded the health standard of 0.7 mg/L raised by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). We proposed that the valence band dependent photoelectrochemical properties of BiVO 4 photoelectrodes could lead to the restricted HO· radical production and the non-HO·-mediated RCS generation, which synergistically inhibited the ClO 3 − formation in the RCS activation process.

In situ construction of BiVO4(-)cellulose fibers@CDs(-)polyvinyl alcohol composites for tetracycline photocatalytic degradation

Wang Tao,Liu XiQing,Ma ChangChang,Wei MaoBin,Huo PengWei,Yan YongSheng

Non-biodegradable and toxic photocatalysts pose as secondary threats to the environmental security. In this work, non-toxic biocomposites were prepared using natural bamboo cellulose fibers (CF), polyvinyl alcohols (PVAs), BiVO 4 , and carbon dots (CDs) from biomaterials. Thereafter, their optical properties, chemical characterizations, and photocatalytic performances were evaluated. The novel BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were prepared via the combined implementation of in situ and impregnation methods. The optical properties revealed that the CDs and fibers increased the range and intensity of light absorption. The PVAs were used as the shield and dispersant to enhance stability because they have numerous chemical groups. In view of the various possible paths of electron migration, the enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites for tetracycline degradation was observed under visible light illumination. The origins of the structure, morphology, and optical mechanism in the enhancement of the photocatalytic ability of BiVO 4 (-)CF@CDs(-)PVA composites were discussed and demonstrated.

In-situ generation of g-C3N4 on BiVO4 photoanode for highly efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Siyuan Li,Yi Jiang,Wenchao Jiang,Yu Zhang,Kai Pan,Song Wang,Chongyang Hu,Lu-Hua Zhang,Lixin Xia

Constructing a heterojunction photoelectrode is an effective way to promote the photogenerated charge separation in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation. In this work, we successfully fabricated C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 hybrid electrodes by integrating g-C 3 N 4 onto the nanoporous BiVO 4 via a simple in-situ synthesis method. The as-prepared C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 photoanodes were systematically studied by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, steady-state surface photovoltage (SPV), transient SPV, Open circuit potential and Photoluminescence measurements. With an optimal loading of g-C 3 N 4 , the 2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 electrode showed a high photocurrent density of 4.06 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V (vs. RHE) for water oxidation, a 2.8 times enhancement over that of the BiVO 4 . It is found that g-C 3 N 4 improved the PEC performance of the photoanodes by simultaneously promoting the charge separation and surface reaction kinetics. When a NiOOH co-catalyst was immobilized onto the 2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 electrode, both the PEC property and stability of the photoanode were enhanced. An extremely high photocurrent density of 5.44 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V was achieved. The largest half-cell solar energy conversion efficiency for NiOOH/2-C 3 N 4 /BiVO 4 was 1.43% at 0.78 V, corresponding to 8.4 times that of unmodified BiVO 4 (0.17% at 0.97 V). This work brings new insight into the development of C 3 N 4 -based devices for application in solar to fuel conversion.

A graphene oxide–molecular Cu porphyrin-integrated BiVO4 photoanode for improved photoelectrochemical water oxidation performance

Chunjiang Xu,Wanjun Sun,Yinjuan Dong,Congzhao Dong,Qiyu Hu,Baochun Ma,Yong Ding

Monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO4), as a rising star in light-catching materials, has been researched in many fields, such as photoelectrochemical water splitting. To date, it is still noteworthy that the photogenerated electron–hole fast recombination and the slow kinetic rate impede the photoelectrochemical performance of BiVO4. Herein, a composite material of graphene oxide (GO) and molecular Cu porphyrin (CuTCPP)-modified BiVO4-based photoanode was prepared and characterized by various relevant physical tests. The photoelectrochemical performance measurements show that the assembled CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode has an admirable photocurrent density value, which is far better than that of pristine BiVO4. Under AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2 Xe lamp, the photocurrent density of the CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode reached 5.0 mA cm−2, which was 4-fold enhancement than that of pristine BiVO4. In addition, the optimized CuTCPP/GO/BiVO4 photoanode displays an evident negative shift of the onset potential of around 400 mV, and it presents a fascinating charge injection efficiency of 92%. The fine photoelectrochemical performance is due to more active sites provided by the molecular catalyst CuTCPP and excellent electrical conductivity and fast charge separation rate offered by GO. Furthermore, GO and CuTCPP form strong conjugate systems, which effectively inhibit the photogenerated electron–hole recombination. These results offer a new concept of assembling a composite photoanode for efficient energy devices.

Preparation and Characterization of Self-cleaning Cotton Fabrics Loaded with Self-dispersive and Reactive BiVO4

Chen Jiayi,Wang Kuang,Qi Zhenming,Wang Chunxia

BiVO 4 was prepared by Bi(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O and NH 4 VO 3 via a facial method. (3-acrylamide propyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride (ATAC) and allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) were reacted with 3-mercaptopropyl triethoxysilane (KH590) under ultraviolet irradiation, respectively, to prepare hydrophilic and reactive components. Then self-dispersive and reactive BiVO 4 nanoparticles were acquired after mixing hydrophilic and reactive components. Cotton fabric loaded with self-dispersive and reactive BiVO 4 was obtained by dipping-drying-curing method. BiVO 4 before and after modification was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), zeta potential and particle size. X-ray diffraction (XRD), SEM and energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) were adopted to characterize crystal structure, surface morphology and chemical element components of cotton fabric. Ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning performance were investigated. Results showed that the dispersion stability of modified BiVO 4 was improved, and cotton fabric loaded with modified BiVO 4 possessed commendable ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning activities. The modified BiVO 4 with mole ratio of ATAC and AGE at 3:2 had the optimized dispersion stability, and the cotton fabric loaded with it featured the best ultraviolet protection and self-cleaning properties. The possible mechanism and reactions for the binding of BiVO 4 with cotton fabrics was proposed.
