Linghui Li,Li Song,Hairong Xue,Cheng Jiang,Bin Gao,Hao Gong,Wei Xia,Xiaoli Fan,Hu Guo,Tao Wang,Jianping He

The design and fabrication of robust and inexpensive bifunctional catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction are very necessary for producing hydrogen by water electrolysis . Herein, we propose a bi-functional CoP@N-doped porous carbon nanoplate (CoP@NPCP) electrocatalyst , in which CoP nanoparticles with graphitized carbon capsule layers are uniformly anchored on the N-doped carbon nanoplates. Benefiting from structural advantages and componential superiorities, the CoP@NPCP exhibits remarkable electrocatalytic activity and superior durability for both oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction in the alkaline medium . The present synthetic strategy is very feasible for the design of the metallic phosphide nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon nanoplates.

Hierarchical Core–Shell Co2N/CoP Embedded in N, P-doped Carbon Nanotubes as Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction Catalysts for Zn-air Batteries

Chongchao Yao,Jiaxin Li,Zhihao Zhang,Chunli Gou,Zhongshen Zhang,Gang Pan,Jing Zhang

Projecting a cost-effective and highly efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen reaction reduction (ORR) counts a great deal for Zn-air batteries. Herein, a hierarchical core–shell ORR catalyst (Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs) is developed by embedding cobalt phosphides and/or cobalt nitrides as the core into N, P-doped carbon nanotubes (PNCNTs) as the shell via one-step carbonization, nitridation, and phosphorization of pyrolyzing Co-MOF precursor. The globally N, P-doped structure of Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs demonstrates an outstanding electrocatalytic activity in the alkaline solution with the onset and half-wave potentials of 1.07 and 0.85 V respectively. Moreover, a Zn-air battery assembled from Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs as the air cathode delivers an open circuit potential of 1.49 V, a maximum power density of 151.1 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 823.8 mAh kg −1 . It is reflected that Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs provides a long-term durability with a slight decline of 15 h in the chronoamperometry measurement and an excellent charge–discharge stability with negligible voltage decay for 150 h at 10 mA cm −2 in Zn-air batteries. The results reveal that Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs has superiority over most Co-N x -C or Co x P@C catalysts reported so far. The excellent catalytic properties and stability of Co 2 N/CoP@PNCNTs derive from synergistic effects between Co 2 N/CoP and mesoporous N, P-doped carbon nanotubes.

In-situ growth of CoP wrapped by carbon nanoarray-like architecture onto nitrogen-doped Ti3C2 Pt-based catalyst for efficient methanol oxidation

W. Zhan,L. Ma,M. Gan

Herein, we report an efficient bottom-up approach to construct the carbon encapsulated CoP nanoarray-like architectures onto the nitrogen-doped Ti 3 C 2 MXene Pt-based catalyst (Pt–CoP@CNT NA/N–Ti 3 C 2 ) by employing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the sacrificial template. Benefiting from the catalytic effect for metals into MOFs and synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 substrate, homogenous nanotubes nanoarray-like structure is obtained on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheet . The unique heteroatom-doped 3D connected structure endows the catalyst with distinct structural merits, such as the carbon and nitrogen-enriched structures, large specific surface areas and excellent conductivity, leading to the high dispersion of ultrafine metallic Pt and efficient electronic/mass transfer, contributing to more exposed active sites of Pt surface. The fabricated CoP and doped nitrogen especially for those lattice nitrogen derived from the pristine MOFs can present exceptional co-catalytic effect, resulting in obtaining strong anti-CO poisoning capacity for catalyst. Therefore, the ultrahigh catalytic activity of per Pt active site for methanol oxidation reaction can be preserved. Besides, owing to the strong stability of carrier, the catalyst delivers a reliable long-term stability during the test. This work gives new ideal for the design of novel cost-effective 3D Ti 3 C 2 -based nanomaterial catalyst with excellent catalytic activity for methanol oxidation.

Heju Gao,Qihao Wu,Jiahui Jiang,Ting Zhao,Yuying Feng,Chunyan Wu,Guancheng Xu,Li Zhang

Reasonable construction of efficient bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) counts a great deal for the development and application of rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Herein, we prepared nano-sized heterostructural particles of cobalt phosphides (CoP/Co 2 P) confined in N, P-codoped cubic through simple grinding combined with vapor deposition method using the Co formic-acid framework (Co-FF) as the precursor. Benefit from the synergistic effect between the coexistence of abundant active sites including Co sites derived the CoP/Co 2 P nanoparticles, graphitic-N, pyridinic-N species and regulation of heterojunction interface electrons, the CoP/Co 2 P@NPC-800 catalyst exhibited excellent bifunctional catalytic activity toward ORR and OER, slightly better than commercial 20 % Pt/C. The liquid zinc-air battery demonstrates a specific capacity of 720.1 mAh g −1 and outstanding stability exceeds 250 h, comparable to 20 % Pt/C. Moreover, the flexible zinc-air battery can maintain good stability under different angles of bending. This study has a certain theoretical guiding significance for the rational regulation of the phase of cobalt-based phosphide to fabricate bifunctional oxygen catalysts for metal-air battery applications.

Quantum-sized CoP nanodots with rich vacancies: Enhanced hydrazine oxidation, hydrazine-assisted water splitting, and Zn-hydrazine battery performance through interface modulation

Wenxin Wang,Jiangjiang Zhang,Jinsheng Rong,Lanli Chen,Shiqiang Cui

Reducing the size of catalysts and tuning their electronic structure and interfacial properties are key to enhancing catalytic performance. Herein, a series of quantum-sized Co-based nanodot composites, including Co 3 O 4 /C, CoS 2 /C, CoN/C, and CoP/C, were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) methods. By means of experimental measurement and theoretical calculation, CoP/C exhibited more robust electrochemical response than other Co-based compounds in electrochemical oxidation of N 2 H 4 (HzOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalytic activities of CoP/C can be further enhanced by introducing Co vacancies on the surface of CoP/C (labeled as Co 1−x P/C). The results demonstrated that Co 1−x P/C not only exhibited notable electrochemical responses at an ultra-low N 2 H 4 concentration of 0.67 μM, showcasing its potential for ultra-sensitive N 2 H 4 detection but also realized HzOR instead of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) half-reaction, thereby lowering the overpotential to 2.0 mV at 10.0 mA cm −2 . Finally, a Zn-hydrazine (Zn-Hz) battery was fabricated as a promising energy conversion device, showing the exceptional practical value of Co 1−x P/C.

Large-scale and One-step Synthesis of CoP/NC as a Highly Active Electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Haodong Zhou,Jingyi Zhao,Qidi Wu,Weijun Li,Jing Tang

For clean and renewable energy research, developing non-noble metal electrocatalysts with high activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is critical. Herein, cobalt phosphide/N-doped carbon (CoP/NC) was synthesized by an extremely convenient approach. Compared with pure CoP, NC wrapped around CoP nanoparticles, which prevented the agglomeration and improved electron transfer of CoP. The obtained CoP/NC exhibited better activity than pure CoP, which has a low overpotential (η 10 =139/248 mV) and a small Tafel slope (59/82 mV dec −1 ) in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 1 M KOH for the HER. CoP/NC exhibited excellent stability with no obvious change in activity for the HER after 5000 cycles. CoP/NC also had high ORR activity, which gave a more positive half-potential (0.85 V) and onset potential (0.9 V) than pure CoP at 1600 rpm in 0.1 M KOH.

A two-dimensional G-CoP/N,P-co-doped carbon nanowire electrode for the simultaneous determination of hydroquinone and catechol in domestic wastewater

Xuebo Liu,Fangyuan He,Liwei Bai,Xiaowei Cao,Chang Liu,Wenbo Lu

Hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) are important chemical raw materials in the modern industry, unfortunately, which are also high toxic phenolic pollutants. So how to achieve highly sensitive and selective determination HQ and CC is the challenge we face. In the present work, we report a facile strategy to obtain nitrogen and phosphorous co-doped glucose-derived carbon coated CoP nanowires (G-CoP/N,P–C NWs), in which nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) was as the chelating reagent, glucose was as carbon source, and the precursors were subsequently experienced carbonization and phosphorization process. G-CoP/N,P–C NWs can shorten the distance of the electron transport and expand the reaction area, showing the intriguing electronic conductivity and electrocatalytic abilities. An electrochemical phenolic sensor based on G-CoP/N,P–C NWs is fabricated. The as-prepared sensor showcases the good sensing performance for HQ and CC with comparative linearity ranges of 0.8–900 μM (HQ) and 0.6–800 μM (CC), low limits of detections (LODs) of 0.18 μM (S/N = 3) and 0.12 μM (S/N = 3) for HQ and CC, respectively. Notably, it also displays excellent practical application for the recognition of HQ and CC in the rain water, the tap water , the domestic wastewater and the lake water, which may be a promising candidate in environmental water monitoring and drinking water safety.

Electronic modulation on allotropic Co2P/CoP heterojunctions with N, P co-doped porous carbon matrix through metal-injection toward high-efficiency water splitting

Xu Yu,Xinyu Wang,Pinyi He,Guohui Yang,Lijing Gao,Fu Qin,Yongkang Yao,Jianliang Bai,Lili Ren

The interfacial electron modulation of electrocatalysts is a useful technique for promoting catalyst performance for the water-related dissociation reactions. Herein, a high-efficient Fe-doped allotropic Co 2 P/CoP heterojunction nanoparticles embedded in N, P co-doped carbon matrix was constructed. The intense electrical interfacial contacts between the allotropic heterojunction optimized the reaction kinetics by boosting efficient charged active centers, regulating the intermediate adsorption/desorption. The incorporation of Fe atoms further enhancing the heterointerface contact between CoP and Co 2 P by providing favorable electronic properties and special coordination environment, causing the interfacial coupling enhancement. Therefore, Fe-Co 2 P/CoP possesses outstanding performance in both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, with small overpotentials of 174 mV and 286 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline medium, respectively. And only 1.71 V battery voltage is needed for the Fe-Co 2 P/CoP (+, −) cell device with satisfactory durability. This finding provides valuable insights into the engineering of electronic structures of well-designed metal phosphides for water electrolysis.

Construction of triple heterogeneous interfaces optimizing electronic structure with B-doped amorphous CoP deposited on crystalline Cu2S/Ni3S2 nanosheets to enhance water electrolysis

Yajuan Zhang,Hui Xu,Xingwei Shi,Yuanhai Bao,Yong Chen

Designing non-precious-metal catalysts with performance matching that of precious-metal catalysts is crucial to the development of clean hydrogen energy. Herein, construction heterostructures and heteroatom doping strategies have been employed to construct an amorphous CoPB deposited on a crystalline Cu2S/Ni3S2 nanosheet (CoPB@Cu2S/Ni3S2) non-precious-metal electrocatalyst for water electrolysis. The introduction of Cu2+ successfully gave rise to an Ni3S2/Cu2S crystal–crystal heterostructure, on which the coating of the amorphous CoPB layer finally achieves a triple heterostructure by an electroless plating technique. The optimized electronic structure and geometry allow the CoPB@Cu2S/Ni3S2 catalyst to show a competitive catalytic performance, which requires just 25 mV of overpotential for the HER and 247 mV for the OER to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. When loaded into an AEM water electrolyzer, the CoPB@Cu2S/Ni3S2‖CoPB@Cu2S/Ni3S2 cell just requires 1.84 V cell voltage to offer a large current density of 2000 mA cm−2, running for more than 1000 h without significant degradation in performance. This work demonstrates the benefit of the integration of the heterostructures and heteroatom doping strategies to prepare catalysts and provides a scientific basis for the development of high-performance non-precious-metal water electrolysis catalysts.

Multi-interfacial engineering of CoN/CoP heterostructures by synergistic coupling of Ru and MXene for high-efficiency hydrogen generation from ammonia-borane hydrolysis

Yutong Li,Qiuhong Wei,Haoyue Huang,Shujun Qiu,Yongpeng Xia,Yongjin Zou,Fen Xu,Lixian Sun,Hailiang Chu

Catalyst development remains a critical challenge in chemical hydrogen storage. In particular, efficient, cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are essential for ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) hydrolysis to enable hydrogen generation. In this study, we developed a self-assembly strategy to fabricate a unique catalyst consisting of a Ru-modified CoN/CoP heterogeneous structure on an MXene support of Ti 3 C 2 T x , creating more multiphase interfaces. Through optimizing experimental conditions, a superior Ru–CoN/CoP@Ti 3 C 2 T x catalyst is achieved, which demonstrates a rapid hydrogen generation rate ( HGR  = 1.43 × 10 5  mL min −1 ·g Ru −1 ) and a high turnover frequency ( TOF  = 589.7 mol H2 ·mol Ru −1 ·min −1 ) at 25 °C, surpassing most previously reported Ru-based catalysts. The catalytic performance improvement of AB hydrolysis can be ascribed to a much lower apparent activation energy ( E a  = 26.3 kJ mol −1 ) and the synergistic effect between CoN/CoP substrates and their interactions with Ru particles and Ti 3 C 2 T x carriers. This study highlights the potential of multi-interface cooperation in advancing the design of heterogeneous catalysts for AB hydrolysis.

The tuned Schottky barrier of a CoP co-catalyst via the bridge of ohmic contact from molybdenum metal for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Ying-jie Sun,Xue-ting Liu,Xin-jie Zhao,Xiao-jing Wang,Jun Zhao,Yu-pei Li,Hui-ying Mu,Fa-tang Li

The tuning of the Mott–Schottky barrier for obtaining superior separation and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers is significant for metallic co-catalyst-modified photocatalytic materials. Metallic cobalt phosphide (CoP) has been regarded as a promising co-catalyst for replacing Pt in the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is still challenging to enhance the kinetics of CoP for the HER while lowering the Schottky barrier and improving electron transport properties. Herein, Mo metal was introduced into CoP and graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a bridge of electron transfer channels for synchronous tuning of the Schottky barrier. The analyses showed that the original Schottky contact between CoP and g-C3N4 was transformed into an ohmic contact by the introduction of metallic Mo, which caused a decrease in the Schottky barrier and even improved the charge transfer, lowered the HER potential, and accelerated the HER kinetics process of CoP. After rational assembly, the optimum photocatalyst (Mo-CoP@CN-1.0) showed a remarkable photocatalytic HER rate of 1.47 mmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation, which was about twice as high as that of the optimal Pt modified g-C3N4. This study provides a new prospect for the rational design of a high-efficiency co-catalyst and provides a new way for regulating the Mott–Schottky barrier.

Cobalt phosphide embedded in a 3D carbon frame as a sulfur carrier for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Yeqiang Luo,Yepeng Fan,She Wang,Qiuyan Chen,Asad Ali,Jinliang Zhu,Pei Kang Shen

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries deliver a higher energy density than lithium ion batteries and are therefore regarded as next-generation batteries. However, the shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and their slow redox kinetics are still the main setbacks for practical application. In this study, a porous three-dimensional carbon frame embedded with CoP nanoparticles (CoP@3DC) was synthesized by pyrolyzing and phosphating an acrylic cation exchange resin previously subjected to cobalt ion exchange. The abundant pores of CoP@3DC inhibit the diffusion of LiPSs, while its conductive three-dimensional carbon skeleton is conducive to the rapid transmission of electrons. In addition, CoP nanoparticles uniformly dispersed in the porous carbon network not only provide numerous chemical adsorption sites for LiPSs, but also accelerate their conversion to Li 2 S. Constant-current charging and discharging tests revealed that the CoP@3DC/S cathode achieves an initial discharge capacity of 1117.37 mAh∙g −1 at 0.5C and maintains a capacity of up to 740.56 mAh∙g −1 after 600 cycles, with a decay rate per cycle of only 0.056 %. Our work provides a facile supporting strategy for transition metal nanoparticles to significantly improve the performance of Li-S batteries.
