Three-dimensional porous defective MIP-202 composite aerogel for efficient Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) removal

Yingying Wang,Fuyu Zhang,Mengshuo Du,Bihe Chen,Yifeng Xu,Wenzhi Tang,Zhonghong Li

Highly toxic Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) persist in water and soil, disrupting ecosystems while threatening human health through bioaccumulation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as adsorbents toward heavy metal ions have garnered significant research attention. However, their adsorption capacity and retrieval are limited by small pore size and powder form. Herein, we designed a defective MIP-202 composite aerogel (DMCA) to efficiently remove Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). Mixed ligand (mercaptosuccinic acid) and modulator (butyric acid) were involved in the synthesis of MIP-202, and competed with the original amino acid ligand for binding to Zr clusters leading to the disruption of the original structure of MIP-202 and defect formation. Defective MIP-202 (D-MIP-202) possessed larger BET surface area (from 35.79 to 129.57 m 2 /g) and pore size (from 6.16 to 11.78 nm). Moreover, D-MIP-202 powder and sodium alginate were synthesized into DMCA with abundant adsorption sites and porous structures to enhance the sorption capacities, which were 434.7 mg/g (Pb(II)) and 202.6 mg/g (Cd(II)). The adsorption process primarily occurs on the heterogeneous surface of the material and represents a spontaneous chemisorption behavior. The adsorption mechanism is attributed to chelation, and ion exchange. This study presents an effective strategy for the remediation of heavy metal ions in aqueous systems.

Sandwich-like Nanosystem for Simultaneous Removal of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) from Water and Soil

Dongfang Wang,Guilong Zhang,Zhangyu Dai,Linglin Zhou,Po Bian,Kang Zheng,Zhengyan Wu,Dongqing Cai

In this work, a novel nanosystem with a sandwich-like structure was synthesized via face-to-face combination of two pieces of waste cotton fabrics (CFs) carrying ferrous sulfide (FeS) and carboxyl-functionalized ferroferric oxide microsphere (CFFM), respectively, and the obtained nanosystem was named as FeS/CFFM/CF. Therein, FeS has high reduction and adsorption capabilities for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), CFFM possesses a high adsorption ability on cadmium ion (Cd(II)) through electrostatic attraction and chelation, and CF displays high immobilization ability for FeS and CFFM and adsorption performance on Cd(II). FeS/CFFM/CF could simultaneously remove Cr(VI) and Cd(II) from water and inhibit the uptake of Cr and Cd by fish and water spinach, ensuring the food safety. Besides, this technology could efficiently control the migration of Cr(VI) and Cd(II) in the sand–soil mixture, which was favorable to prevent their wide diffusion. Importantly, FeS/CFFM/CF possessed a high flexibility and could be conveniently produced with needed scale and shape and easily separated from water and soil, displaying a promising approach to remediate Cr(VI)-/Cd(II)-contaminated water and soil and a huge application potential.

Real-time monitoring of endogenous cysteine levels in living cells using a CD-based ratiometric fluorescent nanoprobe

Wang Hong,Zhang Peisheng,Tian Yong,Zhang Yuan,Yang Heping,Chen Shu,Zeng Rongjin,Long Yunfei,Chen Jian

A simple and readily available fluorescent probe is needed for the real-time monitoring of endogenous cysteine (Cys) levels in living cells, as such a probe could be used to study the role of Cys in related diseases. Herein, we report the first fluorescent probe based on carbon dots (CDs-FITA) for the selective and ratiometric imaging of endogenous Cys in live cells. In this ratiometric fluorescent probe, a fluorescein derivative (FITA) that recognizes Cys is covalently linked to the surfaces of carbon dots (CDs); employing CDs greatly improves the water solubility of the probe. Acrylate on FITA is selectively cleaved by Cys in aqueous solution under mild conditions, leading to a dramatic increase in the fluorescence from fluorescein. The probe therefore allows the highly selective ratiometric fluorescent detection of Cys even in the presence of various interferents. The as-prepared CDs-FITA showed excellent performance when applied to detect Cys in blood serum. In addition, due to its negligible cytotoxicity, the CDs-FITA can also be utilized for the real-time monitoring of endogenous cysteine (Cys) levels in living cells. A sustainable superhydrophobic paper enabled by CD-MOF/PDMS synergistic engineering for highly efficient oil/water separation

Jiachuan Chen,Jiaming Fan,Kefeng Liu,Junchao Li,Qixiu Dong,Guihua Yang

Traditional oil/water separation materials are greatly limited by poor eco-friendly, high energy consumption, and tedious preparation process. To address these issues, a sustainable superhydrophobic paper-based material (PDMS-CP@γ-CD-MOF) was developed through synergistic modification of cellulose paper sourced from wheat straw. A rough structure on the superhydrophobic paper was created by in-situ growth of γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework (γ-CD-MOF), and the surface energy was controlled via polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating. The resulting superhydrophobic paper displayed appropriate mechanical strength, excellent superhydrophobicity and self-cleaning ability. Notably, gravity-driven separation of various oil/water mixtures was achieved with efficiencies over 97 % and flux rates reaching up to 382–603 L·m⁻²·h⁻¹ . Moreover, the superhydrophobic paper demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining a separation efficiency above 98 % after 10 cycles, which indicates promising potential for treating oily industrial wastewater.

Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes interaction affected by mixed amendments under paddy-pak choi continued planting

Houfu Li,Touqeer Abbas,Mei Cai,Qichun Zhang,Jingwen Wang,Yong Li,Hongjie Di,Muhammad Tahir

Cadmium (Cd) is the most concerning soil pollutant , and a threat to human health, especially in China. The in-situ immobilization of Cadmium by amendments is one of the most widely adopted methods to remedy soil contamination. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of organo-chemical amendments on soil Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes under continuous planting of rice ( Oryza sativa ) and pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L. ). The experiment was carried out using four amendments, Lime, Zeolite, Superphosphate , and Biochar, at two different ratios; M1: at the ratio of 47:47:5:1, and M2 at the ratio of 71:23:5:1, respectively. Moreover, both M1 and M2 were enriched at four levels (T1: 0.5%; T2: 1%; T3: 2%; T4: 4%). Results showed that compared with CK (Cd enriched soils), the yield of rice under treatments of M1T1 and M2T1 increased by 8.93% and 8.36%, respectively. While the biomass (fresh weight) of pak choi under M1 and M2 amendments increased by 2.52–2.98 times and 0.76–2.89 times respectively, under enrichment treatments T1, T2, and T3. The total Cd concentrations in rice grains treated with M1T3 and M2T3 decreased by 89.25% and 93.16%, respectively, compared with CK. On the other hand, the total Cd concentrations in pak choi under M1T3 and M2T2 decreased by 92.86% and 90.23%, respectively. The results showed that soil pH was the main factor affecting Cd bioavailability in rice and pak choi. The Variance partitioning analysis (VPA) of rice and pak choi showed that soil pH was the most significant contributing factor. In the rice season, the contribution of soil pH (P) on Cd bioavailability was 10.14% (P = 0.102), and in the pak choi season, the contribution of soil pH was 8.38% (P = 0.133). Furthermore, the abundance of ammonia oxidation and denitrifying microorganisms had significantly correlation with soil pH and exchange Cd. In rice season, when the enrichment level of amendments increased from 0.5% (T1) to 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS and nosZ (І) tended to decrease. While in pak choi season, when the enrichment level increased at the level of 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), and 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOB, nirS, and nosZ (І) increased. Additionally, the gene abundance of AOA and nirK showed a reduction in the pak choi season contrasting to rice. And the mixed amendment M2 performed better at reducing Cd uptake than M1, which may have correlation with the ratio of lime and zeolite in them. Finally, we conclude that between these two amendments, when applied at a moderate level M2 type performed better than M1 in reducing Cd uptake, and also showed positive effects on both gene abundance and increase soil pH.

Amine- and thiol-bifunctionalized mesoporous silica material for immobilization of Pb and Cd: Characterization, efficiency, and mechanism

Ni Tang,Xue Liu,Meng-Ru Jia,Xin-Yao Shi,Jing-Wei Fu,Dong-Xing Guan,Lena Q. Ma

In this study, a two-step functionalizing strategy by combining co-condensation with grafting procedures was employed to synthesize well-ordered Amino- and Thiol-Bifunctionalized SBA-15 (ATBS) mesoporous silica. Its physicochemical properties , performance, and mechanisms in immobilization of toxic metals Pb and Cd in water and soil were investigated. After bi-functionalization, X-ray diffractometer , transmission electron microscope , and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurements confirmed that the ATBS maintained a highly-ordered mesoporous structure, large surface area and pore volume. The elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) evidenced the successful incorporation of amine and thiol groups into ATBS. These structure and functional characteristics of ATBS benefited Pb and Cd sorption . Sorption isotherms of Pb and Cd were better fit with Sips and Redlich-Peterson models. Sorption kinetics suggested that Pb sorption was mainly regulated by chemical reactions, whereas both diffusion process and chemical reactions were rate-regulating steps in Cd sorption. ATBS showed the maximum sorption capacities for Pb and Cd at 120 and 38 mg g −1 , respectively. The sorption mechanisms revealed by XPS measurements suggested that Cd sorption was mainly attributed to thiol groups while Pb was efficiently bond to both thiol and amino groups. High and stable sorption efficiencies were attained in the pH range of 4–6, with a higher affinity towards Pb than Cd. Furthermore, its ability to immobilize Pb and Cd in soils was examined with an incubation experiment, which showed that ATBS reduced 30–56% of MgCl 2 -extractable Pb and Cd in a contaminated soil. The synthesized sorbent via the two-step functionalizing strategy shows high sorption efficiency towards Pb and Cd, and thus it has potential application in remediating Pb and Cd contaminated water and soils.

Electrospun phospholipid nanofibers encapsulated with cinnamaldehyde/HP-β-CD inclusion complex as a novel food packaging material

Changzhu Li,Wenqing Chen,Subramanian Siva,Haiying Cui,Lin Lin

To develop a novel food packaging material, hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) with good water solubility was used to encapsulate cinnamaldehyde (CA). The prepared CA/HP-β-CD inclusion complex (CA/HP-β-CD-IC) was further embedded into the nanofibers, which were composed of phospholipid and poly (ethylene oxide). FTIR and molecular structure modeling indicated that CA was encapsulated in HP-β-CD most probably by directly inserting the phenyl of CA into the cavity of HP-β-CD. Subsequently, the preferable mechanical properties with the uniform diameter distribution of the mat of nanofibers were realized. Meanwhile, the thermal stability of CA was further improved after being embedded into HP-β-CD and the mat of nanofibers. For the application on fresh-cut cucumber, the mat of nanofibers encapsulated with CA/HP-β-CD-IC exhibited antibacterial activity against Listeria monocytogenes at 4 °C and 25 °C for 4 days, without significant effect on the sensory indicators of fresh-cut cucumber. Thus, the mat of nanofibers encapsulated with CA/HP-β-CD-IC could be a promising and practical food packaging material.

The performance of an atomically dispersed oxygen reduction catalyst prepared by γ-CD-MOF integration with FePc

Dawei Xu,Xuhui Li,Tingting Zheng,Ruixue Zhao,Pengyu Zhang,Kai Li,Zhongfeng Li,Lirong Zheng,Xia Zuo

Here, a series of Fe/N/C catalysts with different proportions and pyrolysis temperatures are prepared by co-pyrolysis of melamine with a γ-cyclodextrin metal–organic framework (γ-CD-MOF) containing iron(II) phthalocyanine (FePc). Due to the restriction effect of the host and guest at the molecular level, γ-CD-MOF can effectively avoid the π–π stacking of FePc and restrain the agglomeration of Fe atoms during pyrolysis. The phases and structures of the catalysts are characterized, which proves that the obtained catalyst has a three-dimensional porous and internal cavity structure with abundant surface area (1055.317 m2 g−1) and Fe is atomically dispersed in nitrogen-doped carbon. The onset potential (0.988 V vs. RHE) and half-wave potential (0.846 V vs. RHE) of FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 are superior to those of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. FePc@CD/M (1 : 20)-1000 also exhibits an approximately four-electron (3.84) transfer process, good stability and excellent methanol tolerance.

Novel ZIF-67/BC/β-CD bio-based nanocomposite for sustainable removal of tetracycline from polluted water

Eltaweil Abdelazeem S.,Alzain Rania,Fawzy Manal,El-Monaem Eman M. Abd,Elmaghrabi Nourhan

Antibiotic pollution poses significant ecological and human health risks in aquatic environments, making their removal an urgent environmental challenge. This study presents the development of an eco-friendly and efficient adsorbent fabricated from Hyphaene thebaica plant biochar along with Zeolitic imidazolate framework and Beta-cyclodextrin (ZIF-67/BC-β-CD). The fabricated ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite demonstrates remarkable mechanical, thermal, and chemical stability as confirmed via different characterization techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. To examine the adsorption ability and optimize the performance of ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite, a series of adsorption experiments of tetracycline (TC) were conducted. Results revealed that the maximum adsorption capacity of ZIF-67/BC-β-CD nanocomposite for TC is 294.11 mg.g − 1 at 25 ℃ and pH 5. The findings clarified that the process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetics model with a good fit to the Freundlich isotherm, rather than the Langmuir isotherm, suggesting a combination of physical and chemical adsorption. The adsorption of TC onto ZIF-67/BC-β-CD was found to be governed by a combination of physisorption (electrostatic, hydrophobic, and π–π interactions) and chemisorption (hydrogen bonding and n–π electron donor–acceptor interactions). Furthermore, the adsorbent demonstrated significant regeneration potential after five successive cycles, proving its potential to be used as a sustainable and efficient adsorbent for treating water contaminated with antibiotics.

Efficient Sequestration and Sensitive Detection of Cd(II) in Food Using COF-LZU1: Performance, Modeling, and Mechanism

Pang Jing,Meng Fangyuhe,Song Yiyun,Yu Hongmei,Chen Guosong,Liu Chang

A two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was employed as a high-performance solid-phase extraction (SPE) adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace Cd(II) from complex food matrices. Systematic investigations of adsorption kinetics and isotherms revealed that Cd(II) uptake follows a pseudo-second-order model and aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, indicating a monolayer chemisorption process. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity reached 114.94 mg g −1 , demonstrating highly competitive performance against traditional adsorbents. Structural and spectroscopic characterizations (SEM–EDS, BET, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD) before and after adsorption confirmed that the robust performance of COF-LZU1 originates from its high specific surface area and abundant nucleophilic imine linkages (-C = N-), which serve as primary coordination sites. Supported by the Hard and Soft Acids and Bases and density functional theory simulations, the adsorption mechanism involves a synergistic interplay of electrostatic attraction, chelation, and the channel effect. Under optimized conditions, the integrated SPE-GFAAS platform achieved a highly sensitive limit of detection (3.34 ng L −1 ) and excellent precision (RSD = 1.0%). The methodology was validated using certified reference materials and real food samples, yielding excellent recoveries (94.0–104.0%). These findings underscore the significant potential of COFs-LZU1 as specialized scaffolds for the robust enrichment and quantification of trace heavy metals in food safety applications. Graphical A novel two-dimensional imine-linked covalent organic framework, designated as COF-LZU1, was initially employed in a solid-phase extraction system to adsorb trace amounts of Cd(II) from food samples. The adsorption process is identified as a sophisticated multi-step mechanism: initially, Cd(II) ions are attracted to the vicinity of the nitrogen-rich binding sites via electrostatic forces; subsequently, they migrate into the interior pores through the channel effect and are ultimately anchored via strong coordination-chelation with the imine linkages. This study underscores the potential of COF-LZU1 as a high-performance and selective platform for the separation and detection of Cd(II) in complex food matrices.

The gut-liver axis and TLR4/NF-κB pathway mediate Cu/Cd-induced hepatotoxicity in largemouth bass

Xiaofei Yang,Mingyue Qiao,Yan Deng,Songsong Chen,Cheng Li,Yuanke Shu,Li Jiang

Heavy metal pollution, particularly copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd), poses a serious threat to aquatic ecosystems due to its toxicity and bioaccumulation potential. This study investigated the effects of individual and combined exposure to Cu and Cd on largemouth bass, focusing on the gut–liver axis and the TLR4/NF-κB pathway in hepatotoxicity. A total of 480 size-matched fish were randomly assigned to four groups (Control, Cu, Cd, and Cu + Cd) and exposed to sublethal concentrations of CuSO₄ (9.275 mg/L) and CdCl₂·2.5H₂O (1.15285 mg/L) for 14 days, followed by physiological, molecular, and omics analyses. Results showed that both single and combined exposures disrupted intestinal structure and barrier function, accompanied by downregulation of tight junction genes. Oxidative stress responses were tissue-specific, with increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and MDA levels in the intestine but decreased levels in the liver, along with suppressed antioxidant enzyme activities. Inflammatory responses were activated, as indicated by elevated cytokine levels and upregulation of TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling in the liver. Microbiota analysis revealed that Cd exposure increased gut microbial diversity, whereas Cu + Cd co-exposure reduced α-diversity and altered microbial composition, with increased Proteobacteria and decreased beneficial taxa such as Bacteroidota and Firmicutes. Untargeted metabolomics showed that hepatic metabolic profiles were altered, mainly affecting lipid, energy, and immune-related pathways. Overall, combined Cu + Cd exposure exerted stronger toxic effects than single exposures, inducing more severe intestinal damage, microbial dysbiosis, and metabolic disturbances. These findings highlight the critical role of the gut–liver axis in mediating heavy metal toxicity.

High-efficiency bifunctional M-doped NiSe/Ni3Se2 (M=Co, Fe, Cd) electrocatalysts for seawater and urea oxidation

Yinshuang Shao,Huipeng Zhao,Ji Wang,Xiaoshuang Zhang,Xiaoqiang Du

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting for generating H 2 has become one of the most promising methods. This study prepared M-NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 (M = Co, Fe, Cd) electrocatalysts through a one-step hydrothermal selenification reaction. In alkaline seawater, the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 electrode requires overpotentials of 273, 369, and 431 mV to drive current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process, respectively. Moreover, the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 electrocatalyst needs only potential of 1.395 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) process. According to density functional theory result, the synergistic effect between the large H 2 O adsorption capacity of Co–NiSe and the superior electrical conductivity of Ni 3 Se 2 is a key factor for contributing to the superior performance of the Co–NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 catalyst. This study conducted systematic doping comparison experiments on the NiSe/Ni 3 Se 2 system, providing authentic and reliable experimental support for the design of selenide electrocatalysts.
