Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a toxic metabolite produced by fungi with substantial environmental and health concerns. Thus, the detection of AFB1 has attracted increasing attention. In this study, a fluorometric sandwich biosensor was developed for the detection of AFB1, which was prepared by combining molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with an aptamer. Porous carbon (PC) generated by the carbonization of ZIF-8 provided abundant sites for the MIP layer to achieve high-performance recognition of AFB1. The aptamer-modified CdTe/ZnS achieved efficient sandwich analysis of AFB1 as a signal probe. The sandwich biosensor exhibited excellent selectivity and high sensitivity with a dynamic linear range of 0.01–20 ng/mL and good reliability in spiked edible oil samples as low as 4.0 pg/mL. In sum, the developed sandwich biosensor is promising for the detection of AFB1 in food and the environment, with great potential in the control of other challenging food hazards .

Triplet energy transfer (TET) from semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) to molecular triplets has potential applications in photon up-conversion and singlet oxygen generation. Here, we have constructed a complex consisting of CdTe QDs as the donor and 9-anthracenecarboxylic acid (ACA) as the triplet acceptor, and studied the TET pathways and enhanced singlet oxygen generation properties. The results from steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy demonstrate efficient TET with a total efficiency of over 80% from photoexcited CdTe QDs to ACA. Dynamical analysis clearly indicates two distinctive TET channels – hot electron exchange and thermalized electron exchange – mediating the TET process in the CdTe QDs–ACA complex. The TET efficiencies from hot electron exchange at high energetic levels and thermalized electron exchange on the lowest exciton state can reach ∼27% and ∼85%, respectively, following 530 nm excitation. This efficient TET endows the CdTe QDs–ACA complex with a good capability of generating singlet oxygen species with a yield of up to ∼59%. These findings contribute further insights to the mechanisms of interfacial TET processes and are significant in designing efficient TET systems based on semiconductor nanoparticles and triplet molecules.

Understanding the formation of protein corona (PC) is of vital importance for exploring the toxicity of nanoparticles and promoting their safe applications. In this study, CdTe QDs doping with 0, 1%, 5% and 10% Zn were synthesized using one-pot hydrothermal methods . Afterwards, this study explored and compared the formation of pure and Zn doped-QDs PC as well as the subsequent molecular and cellular toxicity. Result found that Zn doping regulated the toxicity of Cd-QDs by controlling their ability to adsorb serum proteins . The adsorption to Cd-QDs induced the dispersion, unfolding, secondary structural changes and the activity loss of bovine serum albumin (BSA). Among the synthesized Cd-QDs, 10%Zn-QDs exhibited the highest fluorescence quantum yield and lowest molecular toxicity. The formations of pure QDs and 10%Zn-QDs with BSA corona are majorly driven by different forces with different patterns. The regulation of BSA on the cytotoxicity differences of pure QDs and 10%Zn-QDs was similar with fetal bovine serum, proving the significant contribution of BSA to the cytotoxicity of Cd-QDs PC. Compared with pure QDs PC, the higher cytotoxicity and oxidative stress level of 10%Zn-QDs PC were correlated with higher intracellular [Cd 2+ ]. Both larger amount of BSA adsorption and higher level of intracellular reactive oxygen species could accelerate the dissolution rates of 10%Zn-QDs and thus result in higher intracellular [Cd 2+ ].

The Fenton reaction has been widely utilized in tumor therapy and ferroptosis immunity in recent years. Therefore, the detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and iron(II) (Fe2+) in serum is urgently in need. A multifunctional combined carbon–CdTe quantum dots (C-CdTeQDs) probe is first established for the quick succession determination of H2O2 and Fe2+ in goat serum and human urine based on the fluorescence and colorimetric method. The double-emission fluorescence detection is performed by breaking the thioglycolic acid bond on the surface of CdTeQDs by H2O2 to quench the fluorescence at 594 nm. After the condition optimization, the fluorescence intensity is linearly related to H2O2 concentration, with a limit of detection of 58 nM. The colorimetric detection of •OH and Fe2+ concentrations is then continued by the Fenton reaction and the complexation reaction. Among them, the detection range of •OH is 0.01–0.1 μM with the limit of detection of 8 nM. Several advantages such as versatility, convenience, high selectivity, and sensitivity of the C-CdTeQDs probe indicated that it has great potential for the determination of H2O2 and Fe2+ in serum.

A novel dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent sensor for biogenic amines (BAs) was prepared by simple mixing blue fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) and yellow fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (CdTe QDs). Based on different sensitive properties of pH, CdTe QDs and CDs were used as the response signal and internal reference signal, respectively. The developed ratiometric fluorescent sensor achieved quantitative analysis of eight kinds of BAs with rapid response (30 s) and low limits of detection (1.259–5.428 μM). Furthermore, color-tunable fluorescent test strips were constructed by easily assembling CDs and CdTe QDs onto filter paper. The obtained smart label showed a distinguishable fluorescent color variation from blue to green during the corruption of shrimp samples. The smart label with advantages of convenience and rapidness provided a method for visually monitoring the freshness of food samples.

en This link goes to a English section pt This link goes to a English section Sialic acids (SA) are widely found as components of oligosaccharide units in mucins, glycoproteins and other microbial polymers in nature food. The aim of this study is to create a new fluorimetric detection method applied for determinating SA in egg products by using a sensitive lectin-CdTe quantum dots (QDs) nanoprobe. Water-soluble and high luminescent CdTe QDs were conjugated with sambucus nigra bark lectin (SNA) as probe for SA detection. As a result of specific interaction between SA and SNA-CdTe QDs, the conjugations finally lead to the change of a fluorescent signal. Under optimal conditions, fluorescence intensity increase linearly with the increase of the concentration of SA ranging from 12 to 680 ng/mL. The low detection limit is 0.67 ng/mL. This quick and selective analysis method for SA detection has been used in synthetic samples and egg products with recovery between 97.92% and 110.42%, which demonstrates the application of this assay is feasible and practical. So far, the photoluminescence (PL) properties optimization of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) capped CdTe has yet to be understood from a perspective of growth kinetics. In this work, the growth kinetics, size distribution and PL properties of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) grown in MPA aqueous solutions of two extreme concentrations, i.e. 0 mM and 50 mM, were systematically investigated. The studies revealed that CdTe QDs coarsen in low and high concentrations of MPA followed different growth kinetics, i.e. a mixed OA (Oriented Attachment)–OR (Ostwald Ripening) growth and an OA dominated growth, respectively. Moreover, the OR growth in a low MPA concentration solution was found to be disadvantageous for narrowing the size distribution but favourable for enhancing fluorescence, while the OA growth in a high MPA concentration solution is beneficial for focusing and controlling the particle size. Further activation energy calculations indicate that the extra MPA that forbids the OR growth and retards the OA growth is favourable for slowing the particle growth, thus achieving CdTe QDs with a controlled size and narrow distribution. Furthermore, the kinetics study reveals how the introduction of concentrated surface ligands affects the PL properties (FWHM and intensity) of the material.

In this work, we designed a simple, convenient and high sensitive “turn-on” fluorescence platform for trypsin assay based on N -acetyl- l -cysteine capped CdTe Quantum Dots (NAC-CdTe QDs). A series of NAC-CdTe QDs with different sizes were synthesized in aqueous via refluxing routes. The fluorescence of NAC-CdTe QDs could be effectively quenched by hemoglobin (Hb) via the electron transfer interactions from NAC-CdTe QDs to hemoglobin due to the electrostatic attraction of QDs/Hb complex. In the presence of trypsin, hemoglobin would be hydrolyzed to small peptides, releasing inactive hemin molecules.Hemin has slight effect on the fluorescent intensity of NAC-CdTe QDs, so the combination of hemoglobin and NAC-CdTe QDs would be dissociated, leading to the fluorescence recovery of NAC-CdTe QDs. Therefore, we could monitor the trypsin activity by utilizing the different fluoresence responses of NAC-CdTe QDs to hemoglobin and hemin. The recovered fluorescence intensity of NAC-CdTe QDs was proportional to the logarithm of trypsin concentration in the range of 0.05–10 mU mL −1 and the detection limit for trypsin was 0.036 mU mL −1 . A model for trypsin inhibition was further established to verify the feasibility of the system. The IC 50 value is 3.06 μg mL −1 for the inhibitor from soybean. Thus, a label free real time fluorometric assay for trypsin and inhibitor screening has been developed. The established method showed a high selectivity and sensitivity for trypsin over other biological relevant enzyme, and it was applied to the determination of trypsin in human urine sample with satisfactory results.

A methodology for detection of the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus 35S(CaMV35S) promoter was developed to distinguish transgenic from non-transgenic soybean samples by using photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor. In this PEC biosensing system, the as-prepared gold nanoparticles-reduced graphene oxide acted as a nanocarrier to immobilize the thiol-functional probe (probe1), and the SiO 2 @CdTe quantum dots (QDs) core-shell nanoparticles tagged with the amino-functional probe (probe2) acted as signal indicators, respectively. In the presence of target DNA (tDNA) of CaMV35S, the binding of tDNA with probe1 and probe2 through the high specific DNA hybridization led to the fabrication of sandwich structure, and thus the high loading of the signal indicators SiO 2 @CdTe QDs at the electrode surface, which increased the PEC signal. The increased PEC signal depended on the concentration of tDNA, and a wide linear range from 0.1 pM to 0.5 nM with low detection limit of 0.05 pM was obtained. In addition, the PEC biosensor has been successfully used for discriminating transgenic soybean from non-transgenic samples, which was consistent with the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) results, suggesting the proposed PEC biosensor is a feasible tool for the further daily genetically modified organism detection.

L-Glutathione (GSH) capped CdTe quantum dots (QDs) (GSH@CdTe QDs) have been successfully synthesized. GSH@CdTe QDs could selectively detect Ag + by fluorescence emission spectrometry in aqueous medium. The fluorescence intensity of GSH@CdTe QDs linearly increased upon increasing concentrations of Ag + . The detecting limit of Ag + was found to be 1.3 nM calculated from the linear concentration range of 0.02-0.2 μM. The other foreign mental ions displayed no significant response revealing good selectivity of the sensors towards Ag + . The experimental results indicated the GSH@CdTe QDs were well applied as fluorescence sensor to detect Ag + in aqueous with high sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, it was found that the enhancement of fluorescence intensity arose from the formation of Ag 2 Te which modified the surface traps on GSH@CdTe QDs.

Abstract The concentration of L-cysteine (Cys) and glutathione (GSH) is closely related to the critical risk of various diseases. In our study, a new rapid method for the determination of Cys and GSH in water and urine samples has been developed using a fluorescent probe technique, which was based on crystal violet (CV)-functionalized CdTe quantum dots (QDs). The original QDs emitted fluorescence light, which was turned off upon adding CV. This conjugation of CV and QDs could be attributed to electrostatic interaction between COO − of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) on the surface of QDs and N + of CV in aqueous solution. In addition, Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) also occurred between CdTe QDs and CV. After adding Cys or GSH to the solution, Cys or GSH exhibited a stronger binding preference toward Cd 2+ than Cd 2+ -MPA, which disturbed the interaction between MPA and QDs. Thus, most MPA was able to be separated from the surface of QDs because of the participation of Cys or GSH. Then, the fluorescence intensity of the CdTe QDs was enhanced. Good linear relationships were obtained in the range of 0.02–40 μg mL −1 and 0.02–50 μg mL −1 , and the detection limits were calculated as 10.5 ng mL −1 and 8.2 ng mL −1 , for Cys and GSH, respectively. In addition, the concentrations of biological thiols in water and urine samples were determined by the standard addition method using Cys as the standard; the quantitative recoveries were in the range of 97.3–105.8%, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranged from 2.5 to 3.7%. The method had several unique properties, such as simplicity, lower cost, high sensitivity, and environmental acceptability.

A novel aptamers-based fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) assay was developed employing the oppositely charged thioglycolic acid-capped CdTe quantum dots (TGA-CdTe QDs) and cysteamine-stabilized gold nanoparticles (cysteamine-AuNPs). The fluorescence of TGA-CdTe QDs was significantly
quenched with addition of cysteamine-AuNPs via the FRET. The FRET process can be modulated by 17β-estradiol in that the specific recognition between 17β-estradiol and aptamers could show different effects on the aptamers-mediated aggregation of cysteamine-AuNPs, and
correspondingly adjust the FRET process. The feasibility of the method has been demonstrated by carrying out the detection of 17β-estradiol with the wide linear range from 0.5·ng mL−1 to 150 ng·mL−1 and the low detection limit of
0.057 ng·mL−1. The established assay exhibited favorable selectivity towards 17β-estradiol over other endocrine disrupting compounds and probably coexisting chemicals in real samples. Furthermore, the assay has been successfully applied to detect 17β-estradiol
in real tap water samples and feeds samples with good performance. The results were in full consistence with those from HPLC method, indicating the reliability of the detection system. The aptamers-based FRET assay is expected to offer a new opportunity for the rapid analysis of 17β-estradiol
in real samples.
