Chitosan is widely used in the production of various hydrogels due to its non-biological toxicity, good biocompatibility, and strong biodegradability. However, chitosan-based hydrogels have not been widely used in tissue engineering due to their poor mechanical strength, poor stability and high biotoxicity of cross-linking agents. As a green technology, low temperature plasma is rich in active groups that can be involved in various chemical reactions, such as replacing the components on the chitosan chain, contributing to the cross-linking of chitosan. In this study, a plasma-assisted preparation method of chitosan-based hydrogels was developed and the properties, including mechanics, water absorption, and degradation (or stability), were characterized and analyzed. It is proved that plasma treatment plays a significant role in improving the mechanical strength and stability of hydrogels.

A novel non-viral gene vector based on poly[poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (PMPEG) and l -glutathione (GSH) grafted chitosan (CS) has been fabricated. First, well-defined brush-like PMPEG living polymers with dithioester residues were prepared by the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and grafted onto the allylchitosan via radical coupling method. Then, the tripeptide GSH was introduced onto the end of PMPEG chain to give a CS–PMPEG–GSH conjugate. In comparison with pristine chitosan, CS–PMPEG–GSH conjugate could not only condense plasmid DNA (pDNA) and prevent the condensed CS–PMPEG–GSH/pDNA nanoparticle self-aggregation, but also increase the binding ability to cell membrane efficiently and improve decondensed ability of pDNA from the nanoparticles in cytoplasm which thus has resulted in the higher transfection efficiency in mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (NIH3T3). In addition, cytotoxicity assays showed that the conjugate is less cytotoxic than CS, and still retain the cationic polyelectrolyte characteristic as chitosan. These results indicate that the non-viral vector is a promising candidate for gene therapy in clinical application.

The immobilization of cadmium in soil to reduce its bioavailability is a common approach in soil remediation . However, fluctuations in soil pH, redox potential , and microbial activity can still lead to cadmium release. To address this challenge, MgFe 2 O 4 /chitosan carbon aerogel beads (MCSCA) were synthesized for in-situ remediation to remove Cd from the soil. A two-week remediation period was conducted to assess the effectiveness of MCSCA in Cd-contaminated soil. Different proportions (1%, 2%, and 3% by soil weight) of MCSCA were incorporated into the soil for remediation, followed by MCSCA separation through water flotation . The results demonstrated that after three remediation cycles, 55.46%, 72.27%, and 75.70% of the total cadmium were removed by 1%, 2%, and 3% MCSCA additions, respectively, corresponding to the removal of 76.51%, 87.39%, and 90.28% of bioavailable cadmium. Regeneration of MCSCA was accomplished using 0.1 M HCl , achieving cadmium desorption rates of 97.14%, 96.43%, and 90.48% for 1%, 2%, and 3% MCSCA additions, respectively. The regenerated MCSCA maintained higher remediation efficiency, removing 62.72%, 75.20%, and 80.96% of bioavailable cadmium even after three cycles, with MCSCA recovery rates of 94.40%, 92.30%, and 91.40%, respectively. In a pot experiment, pakchoi plants grown in soil post three rounds of remediation with different ratios (1%, 2%, and 3%) of MCSCA xhibited reductions in total cadmium content by 44.75%, 59.38%, and 69.88%, respectively, compared to plants grown in Cd-contaminated soil. In summary, this study underscores the effectiveness of MCSCA in remediating Cd-contaminated soils, offering a promising approach for soil remediation.

Enriching erythrocytes and platelets in seconds and providing a fast seal in bleeding sites is vital to fatal hemorrhage control. Herein, hydrophilic chitosan fibrous mats (CECS-D mats) are fabricated by introducing hydrophilic carboxyethyl groups and subsequent catechol groups onto chitosan fibers. Due to strong hydrophilicity, CECS-D mats exhibit rapid liquid-absorption capacity, especially instantaneous absorptivity to the rabbit blood, which can achieve erythrocyte and platelet aggregations quickly by concentrating blood, thus promoting the formation of blood clots. Furthermore, the mats are self-oxidated to form quinone-amine adducts or quinone multimers by adjusting pH conditions, which not only provides tissue adhesion but also induces erythrocyte aggregation and platelet adhesion, further enhancing the seal and triggering quick closure to achieve fast hemostasis. Therefore, the mats reveal superior hemostatic performance in rabbit liver and spleen models over CECS mats and gauze. Especially in the fatal femoral artery injury model of rabbits, the mats reduce the blood loss by ∼75% and shortened the bleeding time by ∼50% compared with CECS mats, which have been reported to have the same hemostatic effect as commercialized Celox products in a swine femoral artery injury model. Besides, the mats are cytocompatible and degradable as well as antibacterial. This chitosan mat is a promising hemostatic material for fatal hemorrhage control.

Phycocyanin is a natural pigment protein with antioxidant, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory properties, but its relatively poor emulsibility limits its use in the food industry. In order to improve the emulsifying capacity of phycocyanin, a novel phycocyanin-chitosan complex was prepared, and the characteristics, digestibility, and stability of emulsion containing oil droplets stabilized by the complex were investigated. The results showed that the phycocyanin-chitosan complex had better stability and lower interfacial tension at pH 6.5 than phycocyanin, and it significantly improved the stability of emulsion and inhibited the aggregation of oil droplets. The phycocyanin-chitosan complex stabilized emulsion showed better physical stability, digestibility, and oxidation stability than the phycocyanin emulsion. The particle size of the phycocyanin-chitosan complex stabilized emulsion was very small (from 0.1 to 2 μm), and its absolute value of zeta potential was high. Overall, this study suggests that the phycocyanin-chitosan complex effectively improved the emulsifying capacity of phycocyanin.

This study utilized the freeze-drying method to create a chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge. To enhance its antibacterial properties, curcumin and nano silver (Cur@Ag) were added for synergistic antibacterial. After adding curcumin and nano silver, the mechanical properties of the composite sponge dressing (CS-PVA-Cur@Ag) were improved. The porosity of the composite sponge dressing was closed to 80%, which was helpful for drug release, and it had good water absorption and water retention rate. The nano silver diameter was 50–80 nm, which was optimal for killing bacteria. Antibacterial tests used Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus demonstrated that little nano silver was required to eliminate bacteria. Finally, in the rat full-thickness skin wound model, the composite sponge dressing can promote wound healing in a short time. In summary, CS-PVA-Cur@Ag wound dressing could protect from bacterial infection and accelerate wound healing. Thus, it had high potential application value for wound dressing.

Uranium adsorbents deployed in natural water environments rich in microorganisms for a long time are inevitably affected. Biofouling severely reduces the uranium adsorption performance and damages the structure of the adsorbents. Therefore, antifouling performance is necessary for adsorbents that extract uranium from seawater and uranium-containing groundwater. Previously reported antifouling uranium adsorbents mainly have two types: single antibacterial or anti-adhesion, and few studies have developed dual-antifouling adsorbents that combine the two antifouling pathways. In this study, a dual-antifouling adsorbent CS-MPC with both anti-adhesion and antibacterial properties was constructed. The synergistic effect of the superhydrophilic 2-methylacryloxyethyl phosphocholine (MPC) and the natural bactericidal chitosan (CS) enabled the inhibition rate of dual-antifouling CS-MPC against various bacteria to exceed 99 %. Furthermore, the uranium adsorption capacity of CS-MPC was 579 mg/g in simulated uranium-containing groundwater and 8.28 mg/g after immersion for 42 days in real seawater. The SA/CS-MPC composite beads prepared to solve powder defects also exhibited good dual-antifouling activity and uranium adsorption properties, making them potential candidates for uranium extraction. The construction of dual-antifouling adsorbents provides a new strategy for effective biofouling control.

Maximizing the valorization of renewable resources to develop bio-composite materials is crucial for advancing environmental sustainability and ensuring food chain security. In this study, lignin-containing nanocelluloses (LCNs), derived from passion fruit husk using a combination of deep eutectic solvent (DES) and ultra-high-pressure homogenization (UHPH), were incorporated as nanocellulose into a chitosan matrix to produce innovative bioactive packaging films. The results indicated that the inclusion of LCNs improved the water resistance performance and the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films. The tensile strength of the composite films significantly increased, while the elongation at break decreased. Moreover, the presence of LCNs notably enhanced UV shielding properties of the composite films, particularly in the short-wavelength UVC (200–280 nm) and medium-wavelength UVB (280–315 nm) regions. The banana preservation test further demonstrated that the chitosan-LCN composite films effectively inhibited bacterial growth and extended the shelf life of bananas at room temperature. Thus, these composite films offer a promising and sustainable solution for the high-value commercial use of agricultural by-products and chitosan in food packaging applications.

To address the challenge of antibiotic resistance and enhance the functionality of pharmaceutical materials, aldehyde chitosan-based dynamic polymers (ACs) incorporating amikacin and cefotaxime, denoted as ACs-amikacin and ACs-cefotaxime, respectively, were synthesized. These polymer's chemical structure was characterized using 1H-NMR and FT-IR analysis. Subsequently, methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assays were employed to evaluate their safety. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that these polymers retained the antibacterial activity of the antibiotics. This study introduces a novel strategy for dynamic natural materials capable of exerting a synergistic effect in pharmaceutical applications through the conjugation of natural materials with active pharmaceutical agents.

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective treatment for polyps and early gastrointestinal cancers, but requires a high level of operator skill. Injecting submucosal materials (SIM) helps create a fluid cushion between the mucosal and muscular layers, making the procedure easier and reducing associated risks. However, SIMs commonly used in current clinical practice tend to spread quickly and fail to provide long-lasting submucosal fluid cushions (SFC). Thus, there is a critical need for a material that is easy to inject while also maintaining a durable barrier. We prepared succinylated hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC-SA) by adding succinic anhydride (SA) to hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC). The hydrogel had excellent temperature-sensitive properties and was able to be injected via an endoscopic injection needle even after gel formation. In vitro and in vivo studies showed that it has satisfactory biocompatibility. Functional experiments showed that the submucosal lifting properties of this hydrogel were significantly better than that of normal saline (NS) and sodium hyaluronate (SH), two commonly used clinical materials. In addition, the hydrogel possessed excellent hemostatic properties. Based on these results, HBC-SA is a promising candidate for submucosal injection during ESD.

Flexible and wearable pressure sensors have attracted significant attention in the fields of smart medicine and human health monitoring. Nevertheless, the design and fabrication of degradable disposable pressure sensors still face urgent challenges. Herein, we fabricated poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)-reinforced chitosan (CS) piezoelectric films for intelligent sensors through a simple, low-cost, and environmentally friendly roll-forming method. The results show that PHB doping successfully increased the effective piezoelectric coefficient of the chitosan-based film from 40.12 to 49.38 pm/V (a 23% increase). Simultaneously, the pressure sensor based on the CS/PHB film exhibited excellent response sensitivity (484 mV/kPa) and a wide linear response range (0–130 kPa), which could be used as haptic sensors and motion monitoring sensors for the fast response to human motion signals. Additionally, the CS/PHB film could be completely degraded within 18 days in a natural soil environment, demonstrating outstanding degradability. Therefore, chitosan-based piezoelectric films with excellent biodegradability and piezoelectric characteristics have been successfully fabricated in this work, which will promote the innovative development of green chitosan-based electronic devices and disposable pressure sensors.

The significant accumulation of fly ash has resulted in serious environmental issues. It is imperative to find a safe and high-value method for reusing fly ash to effectively address this problem. Additionally, silica aerogels have gained attention as a promising material for energy conservation and thermal management. However, producing a silica aerogel with low production costs and superior overall properties is still a major challenge. In this study, silica–chitosan composite aerogels (SCA) were prepared from fly ash and chitosan. Amorphous silica is polymerized in situ on chitosan by hydrogen bonding and silyl-oxygen condensation. The resulting aerogels exhibited a fully formed block structure, extremely low density, exceptional flame retardancy, and notable mechanical properties (able to withstand 24,000 times the stress of its own mass). It is noteworthy that the nanopores and three-dimensional network structure endow SCA with excellent thermal insulation performance (with a thermal conductivity of 0.0474–0.0521 W m–1 K–1). The strategy presented here provides a cost-effective and straightforward approach to prepare SCA. The results demonstrate its considerable potential for practical use in energy-efficient and thermally insulated structures. Moreover, this approach offers a direct and high value-added solution to the problem of fly ash.
