Fabrication of Au nanoparticles supported on CoFe2O4 nanotubes by polyaniline assisted self-assembly strategy and their magnetically recoverable catalytic properties

Zhen Zhang,Yanzhou Jiang,Maoqiang Chi,Zezhou Yang,Guangdi Nie,Xiaofeng Lu,Ce Wang

This article reports the fabrication of magnetically responsive Au nanoparticles supported on CoFe 2 O 4 nanotubes through polyaniline (PANI) assisted self-assembly strategy which can be used as an efficient magnetically recoverable nanocatalyst. The central magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 nanotubes possess a strong magnetic response under an externally magnetic field, enabling an easy and efficient separation from the reaction system for reuse. The thorn-like PANI layer on the surface of CoFe 2 O 4 nanotubes provides large surface area for supporting Au nanocatalysts due to the electrostatic interactions. The as-prepared CoFe 2 O 4 /PANI/Au nanotube assemblies exhibit a high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) at room temperature, with an apparent kinetic rate constant ( K app ) of about 7.8   ×   10 −3   s −1 . Furthermore, the composite nanocatalyst shows a good recoverable property during the catalytic process. This work affords a reliable way in developing multifunctional nanocomposite for catalysis and other potential applications in many fields.

Adsorption and catalytic degradation by CoFe2O4 coated on metal–organic framework for the removal of 4-nitrophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol

Xiaxi Zhang,Fen Wei,Sicen Wang

4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) contaminated wastewater have attracted attention for their genotoxic and carcinogenic hazards. The magnetic MIL-101/CFO was constructed by synergistically integrating porous/hydrophilic/π-conjugated MIL-101(Cr) and CoFe 2 O 4 . The nanocomposites markedly accelerated the catalytic reaction activity. The BET characterizations reveal the nanocomposites had a larger specific surface area and pore volume in comparison to the individual CoFe 2 O 4 . The composite was employed to evaluate the adsorption and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-activated ability of 4-NP and 2,4-DCP elimination. The adsorption equilibrium could be achieved within 60 min, following the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The nanocomposites (0.2 g·L −1 ) achieved exceeding 96 % decomposition efficiencies toward 4-NP and 2,4-DCP (0.1 g·L −1 ) after 15 min by PMS (5.29 mM) activation. Notably, the reaction system displayed effective catalytic performance across pH 5 − 11 and resistance to the existence of saline ions and humic acid. According to the free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance, the non-radical route dominant by 1 O 2 and few HO • and SO 4 •− were affirmed to participate the reaction. The recyclable MIL-101/CFO/PMS system approached high adsorption and catalysis ability for phenolics remediation in the environmental application.

Rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein using a magnetic-assisted electrochemical biosensor based on functionalized CoFe2O4 magnetic nanomaterials

Bing Zhao,Chan-Ru Xiong,Yao Liu,Qing-Cai Yu,Xing Chen

The outbreak of novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) in 2019 has garnered widespread attention. The virus exhibits high contagiousness, and in certain cases, it can lead to recurrent infections. Therefore, it is imperative to develop portable, sensitive, and accurate sensors to promptly detect infected individuals, control the virus's transmission, and determine suitable treatment strategies. In this study, we proposed a magnetically-assisted method employing CFO@CS-Au MNP as the substrate material, which was functionalized with human angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE2) for efficient capture of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in solution. Subsequently, the captured protein was sensitively detected through differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) electrical analysis. The linear detection range of the labeled GCE/MNP/GA/ACE2/BSA electrochemical sensor is from 1 pg/mL to 10 μg/mL, with a minimum detection limit of 0.15 pg/mL. Furthermore, the fabricated GCE/MNP/GA/ACE2/BSA sensor achieved satisfactory recoveries of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in saliva and nasal swab samples within 10 min. These results indicate that this magnetically-assisted biosensor has established a solid foundation for the swift on-site detection of COVID-19.

In-situ growth of core-shell CoFe@CoFe2O4 nanoparticles on carbon aerogel for broadband electromagnetic wave absorption and thermal insulation

Shuai Liu,Shu Li,Shaoli Guo,Yan Cui,Minghan Dai,Zelin Wang,Guoxiang Chen

The composite engineering of dielectric-magnetic systems has demonstrated significant potential for enhancing the electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA). Despite advances, achieving uniform in-situ growth of highly dispersed magnetic particles on carbon matrices remains technologically challenging. This study proposes an integrated freeze-drying and carbonization strategy, successfully fabricating CoFe@CoFe 2 O 4 /C aerogel, featuring carbon nanosheets uniformly decorated with in-situ grown core-shell magnetic particles. The carbon aerogel annealed at 700 °C exhibits exceptional impedance matching and EWA characteristics, achieving an ultrawide effective absorption bandwidth of 7.84 GHz (10.16–18 GHz) at an optimized thickness of 2.63 mm. The outstanding absorption performance is attributed to the electromagnetic coupling between core-shell magnetic architectures and conductive carbon networks. First-principle calculations reveal dielectric polarization loss arising from interfacial heterogeneities and defect engineering in aerogels. Simultaneously, the hierarchical porosity endows the aerogel with superior thermal insulation. These integrated attributes position the aerogel as a multifunctional platform for EWA applications and advanced radar-infrared compatible stealth systems.

A way to synergistically enhance hydrogen production with internal and external strategy: Magnetized cactus-like CoFe2O4 electrocatalyst enhance multiphysics mechanism

Qiwei Zhang,Yazhi Wei,Bin Chen,Han Cui,Baojian Jing,Chongwei Cui,Shan Qiu

Hydrogen production through water electrolysis is hindered by the high kinetic barriers of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, cactus-like CoFe 2 O 4 in the form of nanosheet-assembled nanowires (CoFe 2 O 4 -NSW@NF) was synthesized to address this challenge. CoFe 2 O 4 -NSW@NF exhibits an excellent OER overpotential of ∼459 mV at 50 mA cm −2 . Under an applied magnetic field of 350 mT, the overpotential further decreases by ∼14 mV. This enhancement is attributed to the nanowires, which modulate the charge density on the nanosheet surface and promote the transition of disordered electrons into a well-aligned higher spin state. In addition, due to the tip-enhancement effect of the nanowires, the interface between the electrode and electrolyte exhibits a localized temperature increase of ∼4℃ and an approximately two-fold amplification of the magnetic field. These changes further intensify the magnetothermal and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) effects induced by the magnetic field. This work effectively reduces the OER overpotential through the synergistic interaction of morphology and magnetic field, advancing the design of magnetic-effect catalysts for efficient water splitting.

Sulfur-doped CoFe2O4 as an efficient peroxymonosulfate-activated catalyst for carbamazepine removal: The key role of sulfur and mechanism study

Cong Pan,Xueying Pei,Xinyue Luo,Jing Bao,Ping He,Song Wang,Kaining Li

Herein, sulfur-doped CoFe 2 O 4 (S-CoFe 2 O 4 ) has been developed as a highly efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ), a persistent pharmaceutical pollutant. The incorporation of sulfur significantly enhances the catalytic performance of CoFe 2 O 4 . Under optimal conditions, almost complete removal of CBZ can be achieved within 20 min. Characterization techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron spin resonance (ESR), and electrochemical experiments, reveal that the incorporation of sulfur modifies the electronic structure of CoFe 2 O 4 . It reduces the electron transfer resistance and promotes the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that sulfur doping increases the charge density of Co-S and Fe-S bonds, leading to the formation of low-valent Fe and Co species in S-CoFe 2 O 4 , which in turn lowers the energy barrier for ROSs formation and thereby facilitates the adsorption and activation of PMS. Moreover, the S-CoFe 2 O 4 catalyst demonstrates excellent stability and reusability, maintaining high efficiency over multiple cycles. This study highlights the crucial role of sulfur in enhancing PMS activity and offers valuable insights into the design of efficient metal-based catalysts for advanced oxidation processes in water treatment.

Decoding enhanced oily wastewater purification and photocatalytic self-cleaning performance of magnetic field-strategized composite membranes with surface-localized CoFe2O4@PDA

Yifan Liu,Hang Jiang,Hongyuan Zhu,Zhenyu Guo,Shasha Yuan,Liguo Shen,Die Ling Zhao,Hongjun Lin

In this study, magnetic polydopamine-coated CoFe 2 O 4 composites (CoFe 2 O 4 @PDA) were strategically assembled onto a porous polymer substrate via a magnetic-field-assisted non-solvent induced phase separation (MNIPS) process to construct photoactive self-cleaning membranes for efficient oil–water separation. The synergistic integration of CoFe 2 O 4 and PDA not only enhanced surface hydrophilicity but also promoted photocatalytic activity, enabling visible-light-driven degradation of organic foulants and high membrane self-cleaning efficiency. Systematic characterizations confirmed that the applied magnetic field effectively regulated nanoparticle alignment on the membrane surface, generating a rough, hydrophilic structure with excellent underwater superoleophobicity. The optimized composite membrane achieved a pure water flux of 4266.0   L·m⁻²·h⁻¹·bar⁻¹, 1.95 times higher than that of the pristine substrate, while maintaining separation efficiencies above 99% for various oil-in-water emulsions. Complementary molecular dynamics simulations further demonstrated that CoFe 2 O 4 @PDA nanoparticles reorganize interfacial hydrogen-bond networks, reduce oil–water interfacial tension, and thus promoted permeance and oil rejection of membranes. Under visible-light irradiation, a flux recovery ratio exceeding 99.0% was maintained over five consecutive filtration and self-cleaning cycles, showing outstanding photo-regenerability. Mechanistic studies revealed that CoFe 2 O 4 @PDA significantly enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O 2 ⁻), facilitating foulant degradation and surface renewal. This work provides molecular-level understanding and a scalable strategy for designing next-generation photoactive membranes for sustainable oily wastewater treatment.

Interfacial Electronic Reconstruction and Thermal Boundary Layer Compression Synergy in Three-Dimensional Coral-like CoFe2O4/LaCoO3 for Enhanced Potassium Perchlorate Combustion

Ren Wen-long,Huang Qian,Guo Kai-ge,Zhang Cheng-chen,Zeng Yu-yang,Zheng Wei,Xiong De-hao,Zhu Chen-guang

With the increasing demand for rapid energy release in energetic systems, it is of great significance to develop novel combustion catalysts that integrate high catalytic activity with excellent heat-transfer properties. Herein, a three-dimensional coral-like CoFe 2 O 4 /LaCoO 3 (CFLC) heterostructure catalyst is designed, which modulates the combustion behavior of potassium perchlorate (KP) through heterointerface electronic reconstruction and a porous framework. The optimized composition, CFLC-1, exploits strong electronic coupling between the two phases to induce a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and redox cycling of Co and Fe species, transforming the thermal decomposition of KP from a high-energy-barrier nucleation-and-growth mechanism into a low-energy-barrier phase-boundary contraction model. Consequently, the decomposition temperature is lowered by 88.6 ° C, and the activation energy plummets from 378.3 to 148.3 kJ/mol. In a KP/lactose pyrotechnic system, CFLC-1 shortens the combustion time by 58.8%, compresses the effective thermal boundary layer thickness by 93%, increases the maximum spatial temperature gradient 4-fold, doubles the flame area, and raises the spectral purity from 70.4% to 88.9%. In situ infrared emission spectroscopy captures in real time a nearly 20-fold surge in the characteristic emission intensity of CO 2 , confirming that the gas-phase oxidation rate is accelerated at the molecular level. Mechanistic analysis reveals that the low-energy-barrier oxygen release pathway triggered by interfacial electronic reconstruction and the heat-transfer confinement effect of the three-dimensional interconnected framework are synergistic. They localize the intense exothermic reactions within a thin combustion wavefront, establishing a self-accelerating combustion cycle that enables efficient and rapid combustion of the perchlorate system. This work elucidates the synergistic mechanism between heterointerface electronic modulation and thermal boundary layer compression, offering a new strategy for the design of high efficiency combustion catalysts.

Intramolecular synergistic catalysis of ternary active sites of imidazole Ionic-liquid polymers immobilized on nanosized CoFe2O4@polystyrene composites for CO2 cycloaddition

Jing Chen,Jiakun Yang,Qin Wu,Daxin Shi,Kangcheng Chen,Yaoyuan Zhang,Xiaoyan Zheng,Hansheng Li

The cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 with epoxides is challenging, thereby requiring the development of environmentally friendly catalysts. Herein, a strategy was developed to construct a multifunctional heterogeneous magnetic catalyst (MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ]) of aminoethyl imidazole metal halide ionic liquids coated on nano-sized CoFe 2 O 4 @polystyrene for CO 2 cycloaddition. The created catalytic system displayed the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites (Zn 2+ , Br − , and –NH 2 ), as well as coupling of catalysis and magnetic separation. In the absence of co-catalyst and solvent, MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ] exhibited excellent catalytic performance for CO 2 cycloaddition (99.92% yield and 100% selectivity) at 120 ℃ with 0.16 mol% catalyst dosage in 2.5 h. By appropriately increasing the reaction duration and catalyst dosage, 98.83% conversion and 99.26% selectivity were achieved even at mild conditions of 60 °C and 0.1 MPa. After 10 cycles of reuse, the recycled MPNPs-[ImR 2 NH 2 ][ZnBr 3 ] demonstrated the same high-efficiency activity as the fresh catalyst, as well as excellent stability and magnetic separation. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites and the catalytic mechanism of bimolecular activation based on the multifunctional structure were proposed. This excellent catalyst was attributed to the intramolecular synergy of ternary active sites, large loading of active centers, lower internal diffusion resistance, the inert protective effect of polystyrene layer and the easily magnetic separation of CoFe 2 O 4 , highlighting a new direction for green catalytic chemistry.

The insight into effects of oxygen vacancy on the activation of peroxymonosulfate via MOF-derived magnetic CoFe2O4 for degrading organic contaminants

Yanqing Cong,Xiang Chen,Wanxing Wang,Lingjie Ye,Yi Zhang,Shi-Wen Lv

Herein, MOF-derived magnetic CoFe 2 O 4 with oxygen vacancy was successfully synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the effective degradation of emerging organic contaminants. The introduction of oxygen vacancy not only increased the specific surface area of CoFe 2 O 4 , but also reduce the charge transfer resistance. The CoFe 2 O 4 with oxygen vacancy showed low charge transfer resistance and oxidation potential. Benefitting from the existence of oxygen vacancy, the PMS could be activated quickly by CoFe 2 O 4 to produce SO 4 •− . As expected, developed CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS oxidation system displayed the excellent degradation ability toward various typical organic pollutants , and the organic pollutant could be mineralized into CO 2 , H 2 O and other inorganic molecules. Interestingly, both redox couples of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Co 3+ /Co 2+ played a critical role in the PMS activation process. The SO 4 •− , OH • , O 2 •− and 1 O 2 were major active species in the CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS system, which were responsible for the degradation of organic pollutants . Furthermore, proposed CoFe 2 O 4 /PMS oxidation system also presented a wide pH range of applicability. The existence of magnetic property was convenient for the recovery of catalyst. All in all, this study provided a promising catalyst for the activation of PMS, and obtained results injected some new insights into the research on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs).

Magnetically separatable CoFe2O4/BiOCl: Controllable synthesis, superior photocatalytic performance and mechanism towards decomposing RhB, NOR and Cr(VI) under visible light

Jun Liu,Hui Wang,Meng-Jie Chang,Meng Sun,Zhi-Wei He,Cong-Miao Zhang,Wen-Yao Zhu,Jia-Liang Chen,Hui-Ling Du,Long-Gui Peng,Zhen-Min Luo,Li Zhang

Magnetically separatable CoFe 2 O 4 /BiOCl (CFO/BOC) fibers were facilely prepared by solvothermal growth of BiOCl on hollow electrospun CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers in a weak reduction ethylene glycol (EG) solvent for visible light photocatalytic degradation of various contaminants. Due to the defect level resulted from the oxygen vacancies (OVs), evident visible light response and enhanced charge transfer are achieved both for the solo BiOCl spheres and nanosheets on the CoFe 2 O 4 fibrous support. The optimum CFO/BOC synthesized at 160 °C with a precursor concentration of 50 mM shows outstanding photocatalytic activity to degrade different pollutants of Rhodamine B (RhB, 92.9%), Norfloxacin (NOR, 75.5%), and Cr(VI) (78.0%) within 2 h under visible light. The CoFe 2 O 4 nanofibers are not pivotal for the photocatalytic process, but mainly contribute to the photocatalysis as magnetic support, ensuring the CFO/BOC no aggregation and easy collection under an external magnet. In contrast, the OVs play an important role in the visible light absorption , reactive oxygen species generation and redox process during the photocatalytic process. In detail, both photosensitization of RhB and species of h + and·O 2 - contribute to the degradation of RhB, while NOR decomposition is accomplished by three species (h + ,·O 2 - ,·OH). In addition, electrons are the main reactive species for the photoreduction of Cr(VI). Compared to current reported CoFe 2 O 4 /BiOI photocatalysts , significant advances for the CFO/BOC are obtained not only for the cheap BiOCl with OVs for the photocatalytic application, but also much clearer investigation of more details of CFO/BOC photocatalysts such as light absorption, charge transfer and active species for the degradation of various pollutants.
