Adsorption of Pb2+ and Cu2+ in wastewater by lignosulfonate adsorbent prepared from corn straw

Xiang Wang,Jiwei Wang,Landong Jiang,Yibo Jiang

The heavy metal ions contained in industrial wastewater are a great threat to human health. Exploring a adsorbent which have low-cost, green environmental friendly, high adsorption capacity, good recycle is key to solve heavy metal ions pollution. Lignin sulfonate was obtained by treating corn stover, and then modified lignin sulfonate was obtained by hydrothermal method . The porous structure makes heavy metal ions occupy more internal adsorption sites. Modified lignosulfonate adsorbent efficiency removes heavy metals in wastewater especially Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ . The adsorption capacity of Cu 2+ on modified lignosulfonate is 450.3 mg g −1 , Pb 2+ is 475.4 mg g −1 . In addition, for 40 mg L −1 Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ using 0.4 g L −1 , the adsorption equilibrium is only reached within 60 min. Meanwhile, the removal ratio of Pb is 83 %, Cd is 72 %, Cu is 87 %, Zn is 36 %, Mn is 25 %, Cr is 95 %, and Fe is 99 % in wastewater using 0.4 g L −1 adsorbent in 2 h. This research develops a practical adsorbent to remove heavy metals from actual wastewater.

Functionalization of carbon nanotubes with chitosan based on MALI multicomponent reaction for Cu2+ removal

Jibo Dou,Defu Gan,Qiang Huang,Meiying Liu,Junyu Chen,Fengjie Deng,Xiaoli Zhu,Yuanqing Wen,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

In this work, we reported a novel “one-pot” strategy for preparation of chitosan-coated carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composites via a combination of Diels-Alder (DA) reaction and mercaptoacetic acid locking imine (MALI) reaction for the first time. To evaluate the adsorption characteristics, the as-prepared samples were applied to remove copper ions (Cu 2+ ) from aqueous solution. The effects of contact time, solution pH, temperature and initial Cu 2+ concentration on the adsorption of Cu 2+ onto the as-prepared samples were investigated. The chitosan modified CNTs composites showed high affinity and fast kinetics for the adsorption of Cu 2+ ions, and adsorption capacity of the composites was found to be 2 times that of pristine CNTs. Adsorption kinetics and thermodynamic indicated a spontaneous and endothermic nature of the adsorption of Cu 2+ on the surface of chitosan-coated CNTs composites, kinetically obeyed the pseudo-second-order model. Equilibrium data could be best described by the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 115.84 mg/g. In view of the extensive applicability of DA chemistry and MALI reaction, different carbon nanomaterials based composites with various functional groups could be fabricated and applicable to different fields such as environmental catalysis and biomedicine .

Room-temperature multiferroicity in magnetic field-poled polyaniline and its enhancement via Cu2+-complexation

Jian Liu,Sajid ur Rehman,Zhengping Fu,Yu Liu,Yalin Lu,Hong Bi,Paulo Cesar Morais

We report on the discovery of room-temperature multiferroicity in camphorsulfonic acid-doped polyaniline synthesized under an applied magnetic field of 0.5 T, increasingly enhanced via Cu 2+ -doping up to 8 wt%, probably as a nitrogen-coordinated square planar-like complex revealed by electron paramagnetic resonance spectra. Room-temperature switchable magnetization and polarization hysteresis cycles are presented, reaching saturated magnetization (polarization) of 0.019 emu/g (4.369 μC/cm 2 ) and coercivity (remanence) of 0.051 kOe (2.089 μC/cm 2 ) and revealing strong electric exchange bias. Both real and imaginary parts of permeability and permittivity exhibit resonance feature enhanced by Cu 2+ -doping, peaking at about the same position in the microwave range of 2–18 GHz and strongly suggesting magnetoelectricity. The proposed model picture, which accounts for both ferroelectricity and exchange bias, assumes ferromagnetic and ferroelectric orders within the same domain represented by crystalline polyaniline islands immersed within the amorphous polyaniline template. Modified Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations account for the matching of permeability and permittivity resonance features.

Preparation and properties of a biomass cellulose-based colorimetric sensor for Ag+ and Cu2+

Wei Guo,Hui He,Hongxiang Zhu,Xudong Hou,Xingjuan Chen,Shile Zhou,Shuangfei Wang,Lingtao Huang,Jiehan Lin

A biomass cellulose-based colorimetric sensor for Ag + and Cu 2+ was prepared by grafting 2,5-dithiourea (DTu) onto biomass-pulp cellulose. The as-prepared sensor (cellulose-DTu) showed excellent selectivity and sensitivity towards Cu 2+ over other common metal ions (Pb 2+ , Mn 2+ , Mg 2+ , Zn 2+ , Hg 2+ , K + , Al 3+ , Ca 2+ , Na + , Cd 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ba 2+ , and Li + ), exhibiting a color change from white to light grey. However, the sensor exhibited a remarkable color change from white to yellow-red upon the addition of Ag + . The naked-eye-detection concentration limits for Ag + and Cu 2+ were 10 −3 and 10 -4 mol/L, respectively. Furthermore, cellulose-DTu responded to both Ag + and Cu 2+ within 5 s. A mechanism for the selective identification of Ag + and Cu 2+ by cellulose-DTu was proposed based on 13 C solid NMR, XPS, and TEM analyses. In addition, the application of cellulose-DTu in real water confirmed that it exhibits the advantages of simplicity, rapidity, and high selectivity for in-situ identification of Ag + and Cu 2+ .

Selective detection of glutathione based on the recovered fluorescence of BSA-AuNCs/Cu2+ system

Yining Zhu,Wang Li,Cheng Ju,Xiang Gong,Wenhao Song,Yu Zhao,Ruijun Li

A bovine serum albumin-stabilised gold nanoclusters/Cu 2+ (BSA-Au NCs/Cu 2+ ) system was constructed as a fluorescent sensor for the ‘off–on’ detection of glutathione (GSH). The fluorescence of BSA-Au NCs could be effectively quenched by Cu 2+ due to the strong affinity between BSA-Au NCs and Cu 2+ . Then, coordination of Cu 2+ to GSH enabled the recovery of the fluorescence of BSA-Au NCs. To assess the selectivity of the BSA-Au NCs/Cu 2+ for GSH, K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , glucose, cysteine, tryptophan, and phenylalanine were examined under identical conditions, and all of them did not induce noticeable responses to BSA-Au NCs/Cu 2+ except for Cys. There was a good linear dependence of fluorescence intensity on the concentration of GSH in the range of 0.4–20.0 μM with the detection limit of 0.36 μM. The proposed sensor showed excellent performance in the selective detection of GSH.

Charge-ordered Cu+/Cu2+ pair regulated highly-selective electroreduction of carbon monoxide to acetate

Siyuan Luo,Haiyuan Zou,Renji Zheng,Shimao Deng,Xuezhen Feng,Wenfei Wei,Ranhao Wang,Ze Li,Wei Xu,Lele Duan,Hong Chen

Selective electrochemical reduction of CO 2 /CO to high-valuable C 2+ products is of great importance to alleviate the global warming and energy crisis problems, while the selective production of C 2 is severely limited by the C C coupling pathway on the catalyst interface. Herein, by employing a Cu + /Cu 2+ charge-ordered metal-organic framework (MOF) material (denoted to be Cu4BHT) as a CO electroreduction catalyst, a high acetate selectivity of 50.3% at 0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) has been achieved. An in-depth mechanism study reveals that the charge-ordered Cu + /Cu 2+ pair on Cu4BHT interface favors the C O bond activation, C C coupling, and proton-coupled electron transfer dynamics, which results in the selective formation of C 2+ products. This work illustrates the critical role of employing charge-ordered Cu + /Cu 2+ catalytic site pair for C C coupling, which paves the way for designing highly selective catalysts to promote the formation of the C 2 products.

Ratiometric fluorescent detection of Cu2+ with carbon dots chelated Eu-based metal-organic frameworks

Juan Hao,Fenfen Liu,Nan Liu,Mulang Zeng,Yonghai Song,Li Wang

Here, a novel fluorescent carbon dots (CDs)@Eu-2, 6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (DPA) metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was synthesized by encapsulating CDs into the Eu-DPA MOFs for the detection of Cu 2+ . The as-prepared CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs fluorescent probe was investigated by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results showed the CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs exhibited the uniform ball-flower-like nanostructures and were very stable in aqueous solution due to their nanoscaled size and the ball-flower-like nanostructures. The CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs could emit two kinds of fluorescence which originated from CDs and Eu-DPA MOFs, respectively under a single wavelength excitation at 275   nm. In the presence of Cu 2+ , the fluorescence of Eu-DPA MOFs decreased and the fluorescence of CDs kept constant to result in ratiometric fluorescent response toward Cu 2+ when they were used as the recognition parts and the reference, respectively. The obtained CDs@Eu-DPA MOFs for the detection of Cu 2+ showed a wide linear range (50   nM–10   μM) and a low detection limit (26.3   nM) with high sensitivity, stability and selectivity. The work provides a good method to construct fluorescent sensors based on MOFs.

A near-infrared fluorescent probe for Cu2+ in living cells based on coordination effect

Yingyun Li,Mingtai Sun,Kui Zhang,Yajun Zhang,Yehan Yan,Kepeng Lei,Lijun Wu,Huan Yu,Suhua Wang

A near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence probe for copper(Ⅱ) ions (Cu 2+ ) has been synthesized and demonstrated that it could selectively and sensitively react with Cu 2+ through specific coordination reaction. ESI-Mass and Job’s plot confirmed a stoichiometric ratio of 2–1 between the probe molecules and Cu 2+ . This NIR fluorescence probe shows a fast response, high sensitivity and anti-interference performance for Cu 2+ and has been successfully applied for the detection of Cu 2+ in aqueous solution. The detection limit was calculated as low as 14   nM. It has been further demonstrated that the probe exhibited good cell permeability and could be applied for monitoring the fluctuation of Cu 2+ in living cells by NIR fluorescence imaging.

Sensitive Naked Eye and Autofluorescence Detection of Cu2+ in Biological Fluids by Polyethyleneimine Microspheres

Yan Dan,Deng Chun,He Yu,Ge Yili,Song Gongwu

In this paper, an autofluorencent polyethyleneimine (PEI) microspheres probe has been designed as the two channel sensor for both quantitative fluorescence and visual detection of Cu 2+ . We synthesized autofluorescent microspheres crosslinked with glutaraldehyde by controlling volume ratio between oil phase and water phase. A novel fluorescent platform for sensing Cu 2+ based on the autofluorescence quenching of PEI microspheres by Cu 2+ with a detection limit as low as 2 nM. In addition, the absorbance of PEI microspheres at 205 nm, 325 nm, 590 nm and 800 nm were sensitive to the presence of Cu 2+ . The strong chelation interaction between Cu 2+ and -NH 2 on the surface of microspheres produced the fluorescence quenching and color change of PEI microspheres which facilitated our sensing approach. We regard the developing of autofluorcent PEI microspheres as the dual-channel sensor for Cu 2+ would provide autofluorcent microspheres a future application in quantitative analysis.

Chemically modified kapok fiber for fast adsorption of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ from aqueous solution

Duan Chunting,Zhao Ning,Yu Xiaolan,Zhang Xiaoyan,Xu Jian

Kapok fiber, a natural hollow fiber with thin shell and large cavity, has rarely been used as adsorbent for heavy metal ions. In this paper, kapok fibers were modified with diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) after hydrophilicity treatment. The adsorption behavior of the resultant kapok-DTPA influenced by pH, adsorption time and initial concentration of metal ion was investigated. The results demonstrate that adsorption equilibrium was reached within 2 min for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . Adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption rate was well fitted by pseudo-second-order rate model. The adsorption isotherms were studied, and the best fit was obtained in the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of kapok-DTPA were 310.6 mg g −1 for Pb 2+ , 163.7 mg g −1 for Cd 2+ , 101.0 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ , respectively. After eight desorption and re-adsorption loops, the lost adsorption capacities for Pb 2+ and Cu 2+ were less than 10 %. Because of the large specific area derived from the hollow fiber structure, kapok-DTPA exhibited much better adsorption capacity compared with many other reported adsorbents based on natural materials.

Synthesis of polyethylenimine modified Fe3O4 nanoparticles with immobilized Cu2+ for highly efficient proteins adsorption

Tingting Xia,Yueping Guan,Mingzhu Yang,Wubin Xiong,Ning Wang,Shen Zhao,Chen Guo

We report the modification of amine-functioned Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (provided by the Laboratory of Bio-Medical Materials of University of Science and Technology Beijing) with polyethylenimine (PEI) using glutaraldehyde (GA) as a linker to increase the concentration of primary amine groups on the surface. The resultant Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs with immobilized iminodiacetic acid (IDA)–Cu 2+ groups were applied to investigate the adsorption capacity and selectivity of model proteins: bovine hemoglobin (BHb) and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), particle analyzer, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR–FTIR), ninhydrin colorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the well dispersed Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs had an average size of 172.6   nm and were super-paramagnetic with saturation magnetization of 71.11   emu/g. The characteristic peaks of PEI appeared in the ATR–FTIR spectra of Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs. The study of zeta potential measurement presented that the isoelectric points of the Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs increased to 10.5. Ninhydrin colorimetry analysis of primary amine groups showed that the concentration of primary amine groups on the surface of Fe 3 O 4 –PEI NPs increased to 0.45   mmol/g and that of TGA is 0.53   mmol/g. These results showed that PEI had been successfully modified on the surface of amine-functioned Fe 3 O 4 NPs and the concentration of primary amine groups was significantly increased. The analysis of protein adsorption indicated that the adsorption capacity of BHb was up to about 6000   mg/g and that of BSA was only about 2000   mg/g, which was about one third of that of BHb. The research on the selectivity of protein adsorption was conducted by HPLC. The result showed that the adsorption capacity of BHb was 2.5 times as high as that of BSA, which further proved Fe 3 O 4 –PEI–Cu 2+ NPs shows specific adsorption for proteins. These properties suggested the potential of the Fe 3 O 4 –PEI–Cu 2+ NPs as protein adsorbent.

Simultaneous adsorption of phenol and Cu2+ from aqueous solution by activated carbon/chitosan composite

Liu Qian,Yang Bingchao,Zhang Lujie,Huang Ruihua

A multifunction adsorbent was synthesized by incorporating AC into CTS, and the ratio of AC to CTS was 1/1. The resultant was called activated carbon (AC)/chitosan (CTS) composite. The simultaneous adsorption of phenol and Cu 2+ from aqueous solution onto AC/CTS composite was investigated by a batch procedure. The adsorption processes for both Cu 2+ and phenol obeyed the pseudo second-order kinetic model. Phenol was prone to be adsorbed more quickly as compared with Cu 2+ when they coexisted in solution. The adsorption behavior of both phenol and Cu 2+ followed the Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities of phenol and Cu 2+ were 34.19 mg/g and 74.35 mg/g at 293 K, respectively. No obvious competitive adsorption existed between phenol and Cu 2+ .
