Heterogeneous photocatalysis is of great interest for environmental remediation applications. However, fast recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pair and a low utilization rate of sunlight hinder the commercialization of currently available semiconductor photocatalysts. In this regard, we developed a unique ternary single core-double shell heterostructure that consists of α-Fe2O3@SnO2@Cu2O. This heterostructure exhibits a tube-like morphology possessing broad spectral response for the sunlight due to the combination of narrow bandgap and wide bandgap semiconductors forming a p–n heterojunction. To fabricate such a short nanotube (SNT), we used an anion-assisted hydrothermal route for deposition of α-Fe2O3, a seed-mediated deposition strategy for SnO2, and finally an aging process to deposit a Cu2O layer to complete the tube-like ternary α-Fe2O3@SnO2@Cu2O single core-double shell heterostructures. The morphology, composition, and photocatalytic properties of those ternary core–shell–shell heterostructures were characterized by various analytical techniques. These ternary heterostructures exhibited enhanced photocatalytic properties on the photodegradation of the organic dye of Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The origin of enhanced photocatalytic activity is due to the synergistic effect of broad spectral response by combining narrow bandgap and wide bandgap semiconductors and, hence, an efficient charge separation of photogenerated electron–hole pairs facilitated through the p–n heterojunction. Furthermore, our unique structure provides an insight on the fabrication and controlled preparation of multilayer heterostructural photocatalysts that have intriguing properties.

An interesting morphology-evolution of Cu2O from cubic, edge-truncated cubic, edge- and corner-truncated octahedral, truncated octahedral, and finally to octahedral architectures was readily achieved by adjusting the concentration of hydroxyl. When evaluated for their photocatalytic performances, these polyhedral Cu2O crystals manifest shape-dependent properties.

Cu/Cu 2 O-modified activated carbon composites (Cu/Cu 2 O@AC) were synthesized via an one-step solvothermal method. The characterization results indicated that copper was uniformly dispersed on the surface of AC as nano-sized Cu 0 and Cu(I), which allowed Cu/Cu 2 O to make full contact with I − . The high specific surface area of Cu/Cu 2 O@AC and the affinity of Cu + for I − led to the equilibrium adsorption capacity within forty minutes. Additionally, the removal of trace I − (300 μg L −1 ) at pH = 3 by Cu/Cu 2 O@AC reached 96.4%. This work provides a promising application for the inexpensive and efficient capture of trace iodine from medical wastewater. Graphical abstract We synthesized Cu/Cu 2 O@AC composites for adsorption of iodide ions in solution.

The unique ability of Cu + to enhance C-C coupling makes it important in the field of CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) over Cu-based catalyst, while Cu + is very prone to deactivation. Hereby, we propose a simple and feasible stabilization strategy to stabilize Cu + species through reducing Cu-Mg-Al hydrotalcite by adding ascorbic acid, which owns stable product selectivity in a span of 6 h at −0.95 V vs.RHE. Characterization results show that the excellent stability is promoted by the heterostructure of Cu 2 O and hydrotalcite with retained Cu + species, which derives from Cu 2 O and slow down the rapid reduction of Cu + to Cu 0 .

Achieving rapid and long-term antibacterial effects in medical protective textiles is a significant challenge. In this work, Cu 2 O-GO nanocomposites are prepared by in-situ growth of small-sized cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) nanoparticles on the surface of graphene oxide (GO). At a concentration of 20 µg/mL, Cu 2 O-GO achieves 99 % antibacterial rate against E. coli and B. subtilis within 10 min, with complete eradication in 30 min. After 6 months of air exposure, the Cu 2 O-GO exhibits an antibacterial efficacy of 84.7 % against B. subtilis and 96.7 % against E. coli , significantly higher than that of Cu 2 O alone. PA6/Cu 2 O-GO fibers produced via melt spinning show over 99.99 % antibacterial efficiency at just 0.6 % addition and retain effectiveness even after 50 washes. The antibacterial mechanism of Cu 2 O-GO involves the release of copper ions and generation of reactive oxygen species, which disrupt bacterial cell membranes, leading to protein and DNA damage, ultimately causing cell death. This research offers valuable insights for the development of long-term antibacterial materials.

Electrocatalytic reduction of CO 2 affords a potential way to mitigate the greenhouse effect and fuel crisis. In this work, we compared highly-dispersed CuO nanocomposites and Cu–Cu 2 O nanocomposites which all derived from Cu x Al-LDH for CO 2 electrochemical reduction . The Cu–Cu 2 O based nanocomposites obtained through the restoration strategies still retain its layered structure, simultaneously increasing dual Cu–Cu 2 O active sites, which exhibit excellent performance in selective reduction of CO 2 to C 2 H 4 . The Cu 5 Al-ER obtained through in-situ electrochemical reduction is modified by bulk phase, which can regulate active species, increase surface active sites, enhance C–C coupling. Meanwhile, the electrochemical strategy offers numerous benefits, including gentle conditions, adjustable monitoring, exceptional efficiency and adaptability. We have confirmed that cost-effective Cu–Cu 2 O based nanocomposite derived from Cu 5 Al-LDH can effectively promote C–C coupling during electrochemical CO 2 conversion and improve FE C2H4 . The FE C2H4 of Cu 5 Al-ER reaches 36% at −1.2 V vs. RHE. And the current density reaches −172 mA·cm −2 at −1.6 V vs. RHE. The results showed that compared to Cu 5 Al-LDO, the FE C2H4 of Cu 5 Al-ER increased by 2.6 times. In addition, Cu 5 Al-ER exhibits excellent stability during the 12 hours CO 2 catalytic reduction process.

The gas-phase direct epoxidation of propylene (DEP) using molecular oxygen, which has been deemed the ‘dream reaction’ for propylene oxide (PO) production due to its efficiency and environmental benefits, remains highly regarded by researchers. In this contribution, we engineer a series of Cu 2 O nanocatalysts by employing the ligand-protection/selective facet-etching technique. Among these, the internally hollow Cu 2 O nanoframes, featuring increased specific surface area and a prevalence of {110} sites, achieve a triple-win in activity, selectivity, and stability, with an optimal PO formation rate of 0.18 mmol g cat -1 h -1 and a selectivity of 83.8% at 175 °C. In addition, long-term tests confirm that these internally hollow nanoframes maintain high activity and selectivity for over 300 minutes. Further characterizations, combined with density functional theory calculations, confirm that the unique atomic arrangement of copper and oxygen on the Cu 2 O {110} facet facilitate the formation of chemically adsorbed oxygen species and propylene oxide as well. We anticipate that the ligand-protection/selective facet-etching approach may serve as a versatile method for fabricating well-defined catalyst architectures.

Industrial nitrogen fixation processes, such as the Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes, are energy-intensive and cause environmental issues. Here, a photothermal evaporation catalytic evaporator was constructed using a core-shell Cu/Cu 2 O (Copper/ Copper(I) oxide) catalyst supported on carbon foam (CF) for efficient overall nitrogen fixation under air. The evaporator utilized the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Cu nanoparticles and the excellent photothermal conversion capability of CF. It could achieve a surface temperature of 362.2°C under full spectrum light intensity of 1500 mW·cm −2 . The gaseous reaction environment generated by this photothermal evaporator overcame the low solubility of conventional photocatalytic N 2 in water and enhanced mass transfer. The Cu/Cu 2 O interface promoted charge separation, and the hot carriers from Cu nanoparticles accelerated the activation of N 2 . Meanwhile, the charge transfer process between the interfaces (Cu 0 -e - →Cu + , O 2- -e - →OV (Oxygen vacancy), Cu + +e - →Cu 0 , O 2 filled OV) made it possible to ensure the structural integrity throughout the reaction cycle. Under air conditions, the evaporator yield rate of NH 4 + and NO 3 - reached 691.96 μmol g −1 h −1 and 423.87 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively, surpassing most reported catalysts. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the interface of Cu/Cu 2 O facilitated electron transfer to N 2 , weakening the N N bond and lowering reaction barriers. This work demonstrated a synergistic photothermal-evaporation strategy for efficient nitrogen fixation, providing a sustainable pathway for overall nitrogen fixation in air.

In this study, employing a 2D electrodeposition in situ assembly method, a high-performance H2S sensor based on a p-n type Cu2O-CuFe2O4 heterostructure ordered nanowire arrays was successfully fabricated on silicon substrates. Compared to Cu2O, Cu2O-CuFe2O4 nanowire arrays exhibits an ideal interfacial barrier structure and higher initial resistance, with a response to 10 ppm of H2S at room temperature (20 ± 3 °C) increased by 225 times and a response time reduced by over 2400 s. The sensor demonstrates exceptional sensitivity (LOD = 10 ppb; response = 234.5), selectivity, and humidity resistance (stable response ∼6000 to 10 ppm of H2S at 60–90% RH). Notably, it shows unique low-temperature-enhanced sensing, with a response of 8.365 × 104 to 10 ppm of H2S at −10 °C (vs 1.144 × 104 at 20 °C). The sensor was successfully applied to detect H2S in human oral exhaled breath, demonstrating its potential for noninvasive disease diagnosis and offering a promising approach for developing room-temperature breath analysis sensors.

Structural reconstruction is a process commonly observed for Cu-based catalysts in electrochemical CO 2 reduction. The Cu-based precatalysts with structural complexity often undergo sophisticated structural reconstruction processes, which may offer opportunities for enhancing the electrosynthesis of multicarbon products (C 2+ products) but remain largely uncertain due to various new structural features possibly arising during the processes. In this work, the Cu 2 O superparticles with an assembly structure are demonstrated to undergo complicated structure evolution under electrochemical reduction condition, enabling highly selective CO 2 -to-C 2+ products conversion in electrocatalysis. As revealed by electron microscopic characterization together with in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, the building blocks inside the superparticle fuse to generate numerous grain boundaries while those in the outer shell detach to form nanogap structures that can efficiently confine OH − to induce high local pH. Such a combination of unique structural features with local reaction environment offers two important factors for facilitating C−C coupling. Consequently, the Cu 2 O superparticle-derived catalyst achieves high faradaic efficiencies of 53.2% for C 2 H 4 and 74.2% for C 2+ products, surpassing the performance of geometrically simpler Cu 2 O cube-derived catalyst and most reported Cu electrocatalysts under comparable conditions. This work provides insights for rationally designing highly selective CO 2 reduction electrocatalysts by controlling structural reconstruction.

Platinum is widely regarded as one of the best catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), however, its scarcity and high-cost limit large-scale applications. Electrochemical catalysts with low platinum loading, striking a balance between cost-effectiveness and superior HER performance, have attracted considerable attention. Here a facile and low-temperature synthesis, combining the impregnation method with the corrosion method, and obtained low-Pt-doped Cu 2 O (Pt-Cu 2 O) grown in situ on copper foam in only 2 h. After Pt doping, the electrons flow from O to Cu sites, which further optimizes the hydrogen adsorption free energy of Cu sites. Finally, The Pt-Cu 2 O with low Pt content exhibits ultralow HER overpotentials of 24 mV at the current densities of 10 mA cm –2 in alkaline media, which was better than commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. This research may provide a simple and low-energy approach method for the development of high-activity and low-Pt-loading self-supporting electrocatalysts.

Efficient and selective photoelectrochemical CO2 reduction remains a significant challenge for solar fuel production. Here, we fabricated a heterostructured Cu2O photocathode featuring a pristine SnO2 layer deposited via atomic layer deposition. Upon photoelectrochemical activation, the SnO2 layer transformed into uniformly distributed Sn/SnOₓ nanoparticles across the photocathode surface. Systematic characterization revealed the SnO2 layer's structural evolution. The activated Cu2O photocathode significantly enhanced the charge transfer characteristics and PEC CO2 reduction performance, delivering a current density of -2.5 mA cm-2 at -0.2 V vs. RHE and a formate Faradaic efficiency of 75.4% at -0.1 V vs. RHE. Coupling with a semitransparent BiVO4/NiCo LDH photoanode enables unassisted, solar-driven CO2 reduction and ethylene glycol (EG) oxidation, achieving a current density of 0.11 mA cm-2 and producing 0.13 μmol cm-2 formate yield in the first 0.5 hour. This work presents a scalable and earth-abundant materials-based strategy for efficient PEC CO2 reduction and underscores the potential of tandem architectures for sustainable solar fuel generation.
