A novel approach for 1,2-propylene glycol production from biomass-derived lactic acid

Jiefeng Xiao,Zhibao Huo,Dezhang Ren,Song Zhang,Jiang Luo,Guodong Yao,Fangming Jin

A novel and efficient process for the production of 1,2-propylene glycol with high productivity and high selectivity from biomass-derived lactic acid over CuO was investigated. As a result, CuO exhibited a high catalytic activity while Zn acted as a reductant for the conversion of lactic acid to 1,2-propylene glycol. Among the various reaction parameters, such as catalysts, reductants, temperature, water filling and reaction time we investigated, a 93% yield of 1,2-propylene glycol in the presence of 0.83   mmol lactic acid, 5   mmol CuO and 30   mmol Zn with 35% water filling at 250   °C for 2   h was achieved. In addition, a carbon balance at optimum reaction conditions by TOC indicated that approximately 99% lactic acid was converted into liquid products in the transformation. In situ formed hydrogen by the oxidation of Zn in water is effective for the transformation compared to added gases hydrogen. The proposed mechanism for the conversion of lactic acid to 1,2-propylene glycol over CuO is also discussed.

Synthesize High Efficiency CuO/Mullite Catalysts for Methanol Steam Reforming to Produce Hydrogen: On the SMSI Effect Originating from the Strong CuO-Support Interaction

Jiamei Ma,Xiangyun He,Jia Huang,Xinran Pang,Tingting Zhang,Yiyun Ke,Yi Pei,Junwei Xu,Xiuzhong Fang,Xianglan Xu,Xiang Wang

Methanol steam reforming (MSR) is a promising and potential technology to supply H 2 for on-board power systems utilizing proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Developing high-performance catalysts at low temperature is still a great challenge. Herein, CuO-supported on different AMn 2 O 5 mullites (A = Pr, Sm, Eu, Y) have been designed in this work. It has been discovered that CuO/YMn 2 O 5 demonstrates a superior H 2 production rate (219.7 µmol·g cat. −1 ·s −1 ) with ultra-low CO selectivity (0.12%) at 240°C. XAFS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, and DFT calculations have testified that abundant Cu-O-M (M═Y, Mn) interface bonds are formed as reactive sites, due to a strong metal oxide support interaction (SMOSI) occurring between CuO and YMn 2 O 5 , which is confirmed by a significant H 2 spillover effect. In situ XPS and 18 O 2 tracing have proved that the surface oxygen exchange and electron transfer rates can be accelerated, thus forming abundant active surface oxygen sites. Meanwhile, the SMOSI effect remarkably improves the contents of surface Cu 0 /Cu + and alkaline sites, and active Cu metallic surface. The synergistic interaction of these factors promotes the activation of CH 3 OH and H 2 O molecules and the generation of a great amount of reactive formate intermediates, yielding a catalyst with superior MSR performance.

Enhanced strength and toughness of epoxy resin through a controllable cross-linked network with a rigid-flexible interchain structure

Runze Jin,Baosheng Xu,Lijie Qu

Oxide nanomaterials are widely used to enhance the mechanical properties of epoxy resins (EP) owing to their high strength and toughness. However, the stress concentration caused by agglomeration limits their performance. This paper proposes a new method to simultaneously improve the strength and toughness of EP by introducing CuO nanorods with a surface-grafted flexible linear polymer into the EP cross-linking network. This forms a rigid–flexible chain interpenetrating structure in the system, and covalent bonding with the EP network, facilitating the controllable adjustment of the crosslinking density of the system. Thus, the goal of simultaneously enhancing and toughening the EP is achieved. Experimental results show that the strength and toughness of modified BCN-CuO/EP are 91.2 and 1.77 MPa·m 1/2 , respectively, which are 76.0% and 92.3% better than those of pure EP, respectively. This study provides new insights for improving the mechanical performance of EP. Highlights The integration of CuO nanorods with flexible linear polymers (BTCI) led to a 76.0% increase in strength and a 92.3% improvement in toughness of the epoxy resin (EP), showcasing significant performance gains. The study introduced a novel “rigid–flexible” chain interpenetrating network in EP, achieved through covalent bonding, which optimally adjusts crosslinking density and mitigates stress concentration. The research highlights the effectiveness of combining CuO nanorods with BTCI in EP systems, opening new pathways for enhancing the mechanical characteristics of composite materials.

Insight into catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene total oxidation over Cu-Ce supported catalyst

Xuan Liang,Jin Zhang,Juntai Tian,Zenghua Xie,Yue Liu,Peng Liu,Daiqi Ye

Herein, three supported catalysts, CuO/Al 2 O 3 , CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , and CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , were synthesized by the convenient impregnation method to reveal the effect of CeO 2 addition on catalytic performance and reaction mechanism for toluene oxidation. Compared with CuO/Al 2 O 3 , the T 50 and T 90 (the temperatures at 50% and 90% toluene conversion, respectively) of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 were reduced by 33 and 39 °C, respectively. N 2 adsorption-desorption experiment, XRD, SEM, EDS mapping, Raman, EPR, H 2 -TPR, O 2 -TPD, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, Toluene-TPD, and in-situ DRIFTS were conducted to characterize these catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance of CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 could be attributed to its strong copper-cerium interaction and high oxygen vacancies concentration. Moreover, in-situ DRIFTS proved that CuO-CeO 2 /Al 2 O 3 promoted the conversion of toluene to benzoate and accelerated the deep degradation path of toluene. This work provided valuable insights into the development of efficient and economical catalysts for volatile organic compounds.

Highly dispersed copper oxide-loaded hollow Fe-MFI zeolite for enhanced tetracycline degradation

Guojun Lv,Tao Wang,Xuyang Zou,Jialing Shen,Jiangzhang Wang,Yan Chen,Fumin Wang,Xubin Zhang

Framework doped iron materials such as Fe-MFI zeolite is an important heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst for tetracycline degradation. Introduction of mesopore can enhance the tetracycline degradation performance for hollow Fe-MFI zeolite, however its positive effect is extremely limited ascribed to the essence of active sites of confined framework iron species. In this work, highly dispersed copper oxide on the hollow Fe-MFI zeolite CuO/FeS-1 was synthesized via an impregnation procedure and applied as heterogeneous catalyst for the tetracycline degradation. The synthesized CuO/FeS-1 was characterized by Scanning electron microscopy, Transmission electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction, UV–vis absorption spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , Nitrogen adsorption-desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. At pH = 7.0, CuO/FeS-1 revealed the highest tetracycline degradation rate of 99.6 % at experimental conditions: [TCE] = 30 mg/L, [PMS] = 1.0 g/L, [Catalyst] = 1.0 g/L, 333 K, and the largest degradation rate constant of 1.26 min −1 , which was 3.4 folds of FeS-1 zeolite and 1.8 folds of CuO . Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology disclosed that •OH, SO 4 • − , 1 O 2 and •O 2 − species were all the active species for CuO/FeS-1 zeolite in the tetracycline degradation. Furthermore, possible intermediates in the degradation of tetracycline over CuO/FeS-1 zeolite were identified with liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Protein templated Au-CuO bimetallic nanoclusters toward neutral glucose sensing

Lv Hong-wei,Li Quan-fu,Peng Hui-ling

In this study, the application of bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a carrier to glucose-sensitive materials for the detection of glucose was proposed. Au-CuO bimetallic nanoclusters (Au-CuO/BSA) were prepared using BSA as a template, the new sensing material (Au-CuO/BSA/MWCNTs) was synthesized by mixing with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and applied to non-enzymatic electrochemical sensors to detect glucose stably and effectively under neutral condition. The scanning electron microscopy was used to investigate the morphology of the synthesized nanocomposite. The electrochemical properties of the sensor were studied by cyclic voltammetry. Glucose detection experiments show that Au-CuO/BSA/MWCNTs/Au electrode has good glucose detection ability, stability, accuracy, repeatability, and high selectivity in neutral environment. Unlike existing glucose-sensitive materials, due to the use of BSA, the composite material is firmly fixed to the electrode surface without a Nafion solution, which reduces the current blocking effect on the modified electrode. The composite materials can be effectively preserved for extremely long periods, higher than 80% activity is maintained at room temperature in a closed environment for 3 to 4 months, due to the special effects of BSA. In addition, the feasibility of using BSA in glucose-sensitive materials is confirmed.

Carbonate shell regulates CuO surface reconstruction for enhanced CO2 electroreduction

Ma Xianhui,Yang Tong,He Dayin,Gao Xiaoping,Jiang Wei,Li Deming,Sun Yuanhua,Lin Xingen,Xu Jie,Wang Huijuan,Tai Xiaolin,Lin Yue,Yao Tao,Zhou Huang,Wu Yuen

The surface structure of catalysts greatly impacts the performance of the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction. However, the reconstruction caused by applied potential can affect the surface structure and is difficult to control. Here, inspired by drug capsules with extended-release structures, we construct a water-soluble carbonate shell on metal oxide catalysts. The shell acts as a protective coating, effectively slowing down the surface evolution process of the catalyst from high to low valence state under the applied electric field. Therefore, by tuning the shell thickness and dissolution rates, the surface reconstruction can be regulated, steering it towards the formation of an abundant low-coordinated structure. This strategy could promote the generation of Cu(0) with rich grain boundaries and small particles. The C 2+ Faradaic efficiency was 82.8 ± 2.2% with a current density of 2.0 A cm −2 , exceeding the performance of conventional CuO catalysts. Ex situ and in situ characterizations indicate that these generated surface structures enhance *CO intermediate stabilization and C–C coupling. Our approach for regulating surface reconstruction can be applied to other catalysts, such as ZnO, In 2 O 3 , SnO 2 and Bi 2 O 3 , elevating their selectivity towards CO and formate.

Highly-reactive Al/CuO nanoenergetic materials with a tubular structure

Yanjun Yin,Xueming Li,Yuanjie Shu,Xiaogang Guo,Yuhua Zhu,Xinyue Huang,Hebin Bao,Ke Xu

Al/CuO nanoenergetic materials with nanotube and nanorod morphologies were prepared and investigated in this study. The CuO nanotubes and nanorods synthesized by chemical etching are homogenous on a large scale, with an external diameter in the range of 100–   200   nm and typical lengths of 5–   7   μm. Each of these CuO nano-arrays was deposited on nano-Al by electrophoretic deposition . Using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, the Al/CuO nanotube composite is determined to have a larger specific surface area (43.20   m 2 /g) than that of the Al/CuO nanorod composite (16.75   m 2 /g). The energy released from the Al/CuO nanotubes is approximately to 3264   J/g, which is higher than that released from the Al/CuO nanorods (2013   J/g). The combustion flames for the Al/CuO nanotubes are also more rapid and violent. It is speculated that the excellent output of energy and outstanding combustion performance of the Al/CuO nanotubes could be ascribed to their tubular architecture, which has a larger specific surface area enhances the intimate contact and mass transmission between fuel and oxide.

ZnO/CuO Piezoelectric Nanocatalysts for the Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Haibo Li,Wenxia Ma,Xianglong Zeng,Shuming Liu,Longhao Xiao,Zheng Fang,Yuqin Feng,Ming Yang,Hao Zhu,Yongsheng Yang,Hongjun Liu

The p–n heterojunction nanocatalyst was successfully synthesized by decorating the surface of ZnO nanorods with CuO by using a low-temperature synthesis method. It was used as the driving force for the removal of tetracycline (TC) in water with mechanical stirring. Different ratios of ZnO/CuO piezoelectric nanocatalysts were examined. The nanoscale ZnO/CuO catalyst achieved a 98% removal rate of TC in water after 120 min. The main active species for TC degradation were identified as hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and superoxide radicals (•O2–) by quenching experiments. The piezoelectric current generated by ZnO/CuO-1.5 was found to be 3.1 and 6.2 times higher than those of pure ZnO and CuO, respectively, due to the formation of a p–n heterojunction structure and built-in electric field situation. The facile and low-temperature synthesis process of the ZnO/CuO nanocatalyst with superior removal rates provides practical support for large-scale application in wastewater treatment.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Al/CuO Thermite Films on Copper Substrates

Bin Hu,Wenchao Zhang,Chunpei Yu,Zilong Zheng,Yajie Chen,Jiaxin Wang,Jingping Liu,Kefeng Ma,Wei Ren

The CuO micro/nanowires film has been prepared successfully on a Cu substrate using a combination of an electrochemical anodization and an annealing treatment. Its morphology and phase composition have been systemically examined. The vertically aligned CuO micro/nanowires can form a skeleton to facilitate the embedment of Al nanoparticles so that their interfacial contacts will expand significantly to increase the total energy release. The CuO micro/nanowires can be used to synthesize the Al/CuO composite thermite film using an electrophoretic deposition of Al nanoparticles. The thermal analyses reveal that the Al/CuO composite thermite film can release a heat output of 2009 J·g–1 at 10 min deposition. This work develops an effective protocol for the synthesis of the Al/CuO composite thermite film, which is highly compatible with microelectromechanical systems to realize functional energetic chips.

Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of B/NC/CuO Thermite Microparticles

Jie Wang,Hongtao Yang,Long Cheng,Pin Gao,Yanchun Li,Dongming Song

To improve the combustion stability and ignition performance of thermite, B/NC/CuO micro particles were prepared from boron (B), nano copper oxide (CuO), and nitrocellulose (NC) as an energetic binder through the electrospray technique. The burning rate dependency on boron content, ambient temperature, and pressure was estimated by compressing B/NC/CuO micro particles into columns. Scanning electron microscopy results show that the sizes of these particles mostly lie in the range of 3–4 μm. The particles are ignitable and burn consistently with minor variations in the conditions: B content (8.3–17%), ambient temperature (−50–55 °C), and ambient pressure (0.02–0.1 MPa). The optimum formula was observed for micro particles with 11 wt% B content. Compared with the ball milling sample, the standard deviation of the burning rate of the electrosprayed sample was reduced by 32%. Combustion is barely affected by ambient pressure. Between −50 °C to 55 °C, the burning rate of B/NC/CuO increases by 14.16% from an initial rate of 13.35 mm⋅s−1. In addition, the laser ignition energy required for B/NC/CuO microparticles was also reduced from 70 to 45 mJ.Keywords:boron;thermite;burning rate;combustion performance
