Multispectral photoacoustic imaging of cancer with broadband CuS nanoparticles covering both near-infrared I and II biological windows

Yubin Liu,Duyang Gao,Mengze Xu,Zhen Yuan

In this study, CuS nanoparticles with optical absorption covering both near-infrared I (NIR-I) and NIR-II biological windows were prepared and served as the contrast agents for multispectral photoacoustic imaging. The physiological parameters including concentrations of deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin as well as the water content in the tumor location were quantified based on the multispectral photoacoustic reconstruction method. More importantly, the concentration of CuS nanoparticles/drugs accumulated in the tumor was also recovered after intravenously injection, which are essential for image-guided cancer theranostics. In addition, phantom and in vivo experimental tests were performed to inspect and compare the imaging depth and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between the two NIR biological windows. Interestingly, we discovered that a higher SNR was obtained in the NIR-II window than that in the NIR-I window. Meanwhile, the multispectral imaging results also demonstrated that the imaging contrast and penetration depth in the NIR-II window were also significantly improved as compared to those from the NIR-I window.

CuS Nanosheets Decorated with CoS2 Nanoparticles as an Efficient Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution at All pH Values

Mancong Li,Yongteng Qian,Jimin Du,Haoran Wu,Linyu Zhang,Gang Li,Kaidi Li,Weimin Wang,Dae Joon Kang

The design and fabrication of eco-friendly, highly efficient, and non-noble-metal-based catalysts are demanding challenges in energy-conversion technologies. Herein, we successfully synthesized CuS nanosheets decorated with CoS2 nanoparticles through a facile route. The optimized 3% CoS2-7% CuS catalysts exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance, with excellent cyclic stability at all pH values for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). They exhibited lower Tafel slopes (46, 52, and 59 mV dec–1) and smaller overpotentials (62, 85, and 106 mV) at 10 mA cm–2 in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M KOH, and 0.5 phosphate buffer aqueous solutions, respectively, than other CoS2/CuS, pure CoS2, and pure CuS catalysts. We attribute their high electrocatalytic performance to their unique heterostructure and the synergistic effects between the constituent metal sulfides that provides a large interfacial contact area, numerous charge-transfer pathways, as well as abundant surface reaction active sites, enhancing the charge-carrier transfer during the HER activity.

One-step synthesis of CuS-decorated MWCNTs/paraffin composite phase change materials and their light–heat conversion performance

Xu Bin,Zhang Caixia,Chen Chenghua,Zhou Jing,Lu Congda,Ni Zhongjin

Paraffin wax (PW) is a solid–liquid organic phase change material (PCM). However, the low thermal conductivity and poor light–heat conversion performance limit its feasibility in solar thermal storage applications. In this paper, CuS-decorated carboxyl multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/PW light–heat conversion composite PCMs were prepared by one step. The structure and properties of the composite PCMs were studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis, coefficient of thermal conductivity, UV–visible–near infrared spectrometer and light–heat conversion testing. The results showed that the light–heat conversion performance of CuS–MWCNTs/PW composite PCMs were better than that of MWCNT/PW composite PCMs with the same mass fraction. Therefore, it is expected that this research will open up new avenues of study for the creation of advanced composite PCM with excellent light–heat conversion performance.

Ultra-small CuS Nanoparticles as Peroxidase Mimetics for Sensitive and Colorimetric Detection of Uric Acid in Human Serum

Xue WANG,Cheng-Ling TANG,Jia-Jun LIU,Hong-Zhi ZHANG,Jian WANG

As the main final products of the purine metabolism in human body, uric acid (UA) usually presents in serum and urine. Thus, the level of UA in biology is closely related to human health. In this work, the ultra-small CuS nanoparticles (NPs) were demonstrated to possess intrinsic peroxidase-like activity towards 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) substrate in the presence of H 2 O 2 , which yielded the blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB) with strong absorption at 653 nm. Furthermore, H 2 O 2 could be produced by the enzymatic reaction between UA and uricase to yield the blue oxTMB with the peroxidase mimetics activity of CuS NPs, which provided a sensitive and colorimetric method for UA detection with a linear range from 1.0 × 10 −6 M to 1.0 × 10 −4 M and a detection limit of 1.0 × 10 −7 M. Moreover, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of UA in human serum samples, which supplied a similar result to the clinical method.

Enhanced charge separation of CuS and CdS quantum-dot-cosensitized porous TiO2-based photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Jimin Du,Mengke Yang,Fangfang Zhang,Xuechun Cheng,Haoran Wu,Huichuang Qin,Qingsong Jian,Xialing Lin,Kaidi Li,Dae Joon Kang

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting using high-performance catalysts shows considerable promise in generating environment-friendly hydrogen energy. Its practical applications, however, suffer from several shortcomings, such as low photocurrent density, large onset-voltage value, and poor durability. In this study, CuS and CdS quantum-dot-cosensitized porous TiO 2 -based PEC catalysts (CuS-CT) have been successfully synthesized via in situ sulfuration of CuO and CdO coexisting inside a porous TiO 2 monolith by a hydrothermal method . Compared to porous TiO 2 , CuS-sensitized porous TiO 2 (CuS-TiO 2 ), and CdS-sensitized porous TiO 2 (CdS-TiO 2 ) in terms of PEC performance, the CuS-CT photoanode exhibited a significantly high anodic photocurrent for water splitting under simulated sunlight radiation. The photocurrent produced by the optimized sample of 7% CuS-5% CdS-TiO 2 (7% CuS-CT) was nearly 2.7 times higher than that of pure porous TiO 2 at 1.0   V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Porous TiO 2 possesses large surface areas that can drive fast electrolyte transport and afford more surface reaction active sites. On the other hand, CuS and CdS quantum dots not only broaden the visible light absorption range, but also improve photoinduced electron-hole separation efficiency. The co-sensitized multi-nanostructures photoanodes lead to a remarkable and promising application in PEC water splitting reactions.

Persulfate activation of CuS@Ti3C2-based MXene with Bi-active centers toward Orange II removal under visible light

Qi Wang,Yu Mei,Ruoxue Zhou,Sridhar Komarneni,Jianfeng Ma

The Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene with unique lamellar nanostructure and high conductivity is expected to effectively improve photocatalytic ability of composites as a cocatalyst. Herein, two dimensional Ti 3 C 2 -based MXene nanosheets decorated with copper sulfide particles (CuS@MXene) were synthesized by hydrothermal treatment to boost catalytic persulfate (PS) activation under light, exhibiting remarkable reactivity and stability for the rapid removal of Orange II. The phase composition of CuS@MXene was detected by X-ray diffraction (XRD), the morphology of CuS@MXene was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the elemental composition and valence state of elements in the CuS@MXene. The dosage of PS and initial pH of solution were the main factors affecting the removal rate of Orange II, and the quenching experiment showed that 1 O 2 was the primary reactive species for the removal of Orange II in CuS@MXene -PS system. In addition, this study showed that CuS@MXene provided bi-active centers for PS activation, which was mainly attributed to the rapid charge transfer between dual electron-rich active centers of Cu and Ti. This system may be applicable to the degradation of other challenging organic pollutants .

High-Density-Nanotips-Composed 3D Hierarchical Au/CuS Hybrids for Sensitive, Signal-Reproducible, and Substrate-Recyclable SERS Detection

Hao Fu,Weiwei Liu,Junqing Li,Wenguang Wu,Qian Zhao,Haoming Bao,Le Zhou,Shuyi Zhu,Jinglin Kong,Hongwen Zhang,Weiping Cai

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) provides an unprecedented opportunity for fingerprinting identification and trace-level detection in chemistry, biomedicine, materials, and so on. Although great efforts have been devoted to fabricating sensitive plasmonic nanomaterials, it is still challenging to batch-produce a SERS substrate with high sensitivity, good reproducibility, and perfect recyclability. Here, we describe a facile fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical Au/CuS nanocomposites, in which high-density Au nanotips enable highly SERS-active sensing, and the well-defined microflower (MF) geometry produces perfect signal reproducibility (RSD < 5%) for large laser spot excitations (>50 μm2), which is particularly suitable for practical on-site detection with a handheld Raman spectrometer. In addition, a self-cleaning ability of this Au/CuS Schottky junction photocatalyst under sunlight irradiation allows complete removal of the adsorbed analytes, realizing perfect regeneration of the SERS substrates over many cycles. The mass-production, ultra-sensitive, high-reproducibility, and fast-recyclability features of hierarchical Au/CuS MFs greatly facilitate cost-effective and field SERS detection of trace analytes in practice.Keywords:Au/CuS hybrids;high-density nanotips;SERS;signal reproducible;substrate recyclable

Near-infrared responsive sulfur vacancy-rich CuS nanosheets for efficient antibacterial activity via synergistic photothermal and photodynamic pathways

Shudi Mo,Yunhua Song,Meihong Lin,Jianling Wang,Ze Zhang,Jingyu Sun,Donggang Guo,Lu Liu

Defect engineering has been proven to be an effective approach for electronic structure modulation and plays an important role in the photocatalytic performance of nanomaterials. In this study, a series of CuS nanosheet sulfur vacancies ( V S ) are constructed by a simple hydrothermal synthesis method. The CuS with the highest V S concentration exhibits strong antibacterial performance, achieving bactericidal rates of 99.9% against the Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria under 808 nm laser irradiation. Under illumination, the temperature of the catalyst increases from 23.5 °C to 53.3 °C, and with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 41.8%. For E. coli and B. subtilis , the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production that is induced by the CuS group is 8.6 and 9.6 times greater, respectively, than that of the control group. The presence of V S facilitates the enhancement of the light absorption capacity and the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, thereby resulting in improved photocatalytic performance. The synergistic effect of photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is aimed at causing oxidative damage and leading to bacterial death. Our findings provide an effective antibacterial strategy and offer new horizons for the application of CuS catalysts with V S in the NIR region.

A matryoshka-like CuS@void@Co3O4 double microcube-locked sulfur as cathode for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Jiawei Long,Tianli Han,Mengfei Zhu,Xiaoyong Xu,Jinjin Li,Junjie Niu,Jinyun Liu

Lithium-sulfur battery cathodes still remain a challenge on capacity decay due to the shuttle effect even though a series of strategies have been tried. Here we report a novel matryoshka-like CuS@void@Co 3 O 4 architecture of double micro-cubes ( μ -cubes) that locks sulfur between the CuS core and the Co 3 O 4 shell. Plenty of existing spaces between the μ -cubes suffice a high loading of sulfur and volumetric accommodation. The robust, double closed cubes configuration greatly enhances the confinement of polysulfides . In parallel, the CuS core increases the electronic conductivity and contributes to additional capacity, while the Co 3 O 4 shell ensures a better interface activity. A high Li +  ion diffusion coefficient is obtained during the sulfur and lithium sulfide transformation. The constructed battery displays an initial capacity up to 1480 mAh g −1 , and a Coulombic efficiency (CE) exceeding 99%. A capacity retention higher than 500 mAh g −1 with a CE larger than 99.8% after cycling 400 times at 0.2 C are achieved. In addition, under a temperature of −5 °C, a high capacity of 700 mAh g −1 at 0.2 C after 200 cycles is achieved, indicating a good low-temperature tolerance.

Tumor environment responsive degradable CuS@mSiO2@MnO2/DOX for MRI guided synergistic chemo-photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy

Minyi Zhang,Xijian Liu,Qian Luo,Qi Wang,Linjing Zhao,Guoying Deng,Renbin Ge,Lei Zhang,Junqing Hu,Jie Lu

Chemo-photothermal therapy and chemodynamic therapy have a great promise for enhanced tumor treatment effect for integration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and O 2 generation. Hereby, a smart tumor environment (TME) responsive theranostic agent based on CuS@mSiO 2 @MnO 2 nanocomposites was fabricated by a facile method. When the nanocomposites entered tumor, the drug release was triggered by multi-model response of NIR irradiation, weak acidity and high glutathione (GSH) in TME. The O 2 and toxic •OH were generated from H 2 O 2 in TME through catalyzing by MnO 2 , which relieved hypoxia and enhanced the effect of chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, the generated Mn 2+ in TME was used to monitor the nanocomposites delivery by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Also, the excellent photothermal therapy effect could be triggered by NIR irradiation for CuS core. More importantly, the growth of tumors was greatly inhibited by the synergetic chemo-photothermal therapy and CDT. This work may open a wide route for tumor environment responsive theranostic, including relieving hypoxia, chemo-photothermal therapy, CDT and MR imaging.

Directional movement of electron induced by interfacial coupling in CuS@NiCo-LDHs for efficient alkaline oxygen evolution reaction

Li Liu,Jing Mo,Jie Xu,Yangxi Liu,Ruoxi Yang,Xiaohui Yang,Xinguo Ma,Wensheng Fu

Heterojunction has the characteristics of adjusting catalyst structure, improving oxygen evolution kinetics and breaking the elevated reaction barrier of oxygen evolution process. In this paper, a heterostructure catalyst of NiCo-LDHs nanosheets encapsulated CuS hollow nano-octahedrals has been reported, which has better stability and higher mass transfer efficiency compared with two-dimensional nanosheets. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the heterostructure strengthens the orbital hybridization of metal 3 d and O 2 p , at the same time, the heterointerface coupling induces the directional movement of electrons from NiCo-LDHs to CuS, which together provide abundant high-valence Ni and Co active sites, promote the conversion of *OH to *O species, thus reducing the energy required for the reaction. Hence, CuS@NiCo-LDHs exhibits excellent OER performance and good stability in 1 M KOH. When the current density is 10 mA/cm 2 , the overpotential and Tafel slope of this catalyst is only 253 mV and 56 mV/dec, respectively. This study furnishes the construction of heterogeneous structures and the catalyst exploitation with serviceable insights.

Multiple responsive self-healing behavior of amino-functionalized CuS-modified thermo-reversible polyurethane containing double dynamic covalent bonds

Jiaofeng Ye,Haocheng Liu,Danbin Zhu,Chenyang Guo,Yanhua Liu,Libang Feng

A self-healing polyurethane with five-fold response to thermal, near-infrared light, microwave, sunlight and UV light is prepared by introducing amino-functionalized copper sulfide (CuS-NH 2 ) nanoparticles into thermally reversible polyurethane containing both Diels-Alder and disulfide bonds. The prepared polyurethane exhibits optimal comprehensive mechanical properties and self-healing performance when the addition amount of CuS-NH 2 is 0.3 wt%. The polyurethane with quite high tensile strength (14.3 MPa), hardness (75 HA), elongation at break (625 %), and toughness (24.85 MJ/m 3 ) can be obtained. Cracks in the modified polyurethane can be self-healed repeatedly through heat-treated at 120 °C for 6 min, or irradiated with 4 W/m 2 of near infrared light at a wavelength of 808 nm for 60 s, or treated under a 250 W microwave for 80 s, and followed by a heat treatment for 12 h at 60 °C. More importantly, the damaged sample can also be repaired multiply after being treated to simulated sunlight or irradiated with 250–380 nm UV light for 6 h. Results show that the quickest self-healing speed and highest repair efficiency can be resulted when the materials are exposed to near-infrared light. The self-healing behavior is achieved through the cooperation of thermo-reversible Diels-Alder reaction, disulfide bonds exchange, dissociation and regeneration of hydrogen bonds, directional migration of CuS-NH 2 nanoparticles. These findings give important implication for the development of multi-responsive self-healing materials with efficient self-healing capability. Meanwhile, it provides various ideal selections for damage repair under different environments.
