Chirality, universal characteristics of nature, introduces asymmetry in synthetic materials. Revealing the microscopic asymmetry of macroscopically symmetric materials is the key to control the growth of chiral materials and give full play to their application potential. Materials for photon upconversion (UC) are of great interest for many applications owing to their anti-Stoke luminescence process, especially for chiral UC materials. For the preparation of UC materials, a tiny change in reaction parameters will lead to variations in morphology, phase components, and fluorescence intensity, as well as its chirality. Because of the strict reaction conditions for the formation of chiral UC materials, there are no reports of the successful synthesis of chiral UC materials. Therefore, a facile method for the controllable synthesis of chiral UC materials is highly desired. Herein, chiral-assembled hexagonal prisms of β-NaYF4:Er3+/Yb3+ microcrystals were synthesized to realize the smart manipulation of their morphology as well as a great improvement of the fluorescence efficiency. We proposed a three-stage doped β-NaYF4 crystal growth mechanism on mesoscale regulation, where the fluorescence enhancement principle of chirality was revealed. The enhancement of fluorescence efficiency of chiral UC materials endows their promising application in luminescent displays.

β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ nanocrystals embedded transparent glass ceramic has been successfully fabricated by direct incorporation of hydrophilic upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) into sol-gel silica glass and subsequent heat treatment. The temperature-sensitive upconversion luminescent behaviors of the as-fabricated UCNPs-silica glass ceramic are systemically investigated in order to investigate its potential application as luminescent thermometric medium. Impressively, benefiting from low-phonon-energy environment, highly UC emission for erbium ions in β-NaYF 4 nanophase and high transparency, good chemical/mechanical stability of the oxide glass matrix, the investigated glass ceramic has superiorities of high relative temperature sensitivity (~ 1.16% K −1 ) and excellent thermal stability for accurate temperature sensing. This preliminary study not only provides a reference for fabricating other transparent bulk glass ceramics containing highly luminescent nanomaterials , but also exploits an effective approach for developing high-performance luminescent thermometers.

In this work, the monodisperse spherical pure β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ core NCs with average size of 7.2 nm were synthesized by using NaOA as sodium source instead of the conventional NaOH, based on which the sub-20 nm β-NaYF 4 :Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ @NaGdF 4 core-shell NCs with magnetic-optical bifunctional properties were successfully obtained with seed-mediated growth method. The magnetization of the core-shell NCs enhanced proportionally with increased shell thickness, and the maximum upconversion intensity was three orders of magnitude increased in the 18.3 nm NaYF 4 : Yb 3+ ,Er 3+ @NaGdF 4 core-shell NCs compare with the corresponding core NCs. Besides, the upconversion mechanism for the core and core-shell NCs were discussed. This work may lead to an ideal platform for the preparation of sub-20 nm spherical NCs with magnetic and optical properties for application in biomedical imaging and drug delivery.

In this paper, an electrospinning technique was developed to prepare CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ one dimensional (1D) nanofibers for the first time. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption/desorption were utilized to characterize the structure and morphology of the as-prepared nanofibers, indicating that single phase mesoporous CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers with a uniform size and morphology can be prepared via the electrospinning technique. The as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers exhibit strong UCL under the excitation of 980 nm. The cross-relaxation (4S3/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I9/2 + 4I13/2) and energy back transfer (4S3/2 + 4F7/2 → 4I13/2 + 4F5/2) processes are found to be responsible for the concentration-dependent UCL properties, confirmed by rate equation modeling. Optical thermometry in the temperature range of 298–623 K was recorded using the FIR technique with two green UC emissions in the as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers. The dependence of the sensitivity on the doping concentration of the Yb3+ and Er3+ ions is found. The above results suggest that the as-prepared CaSc2O4:Yb3+/Er3+ 1D nanofibers have great potential for the applications of drug delivery and optical thermometers.

The rare earth hollow spheres with up-conversion luminescence properties have shown potential applications in drug delivery and bioimaging fields. However, there have been few reports for the degradation properties of rare earth oxide drug carriers. Herein, uniform and well-dispersed Y2O3:Yb3+,Er3+ hollow spheres (YOHSs) have been fabricated by a general Pechini sol–gel process with melamine formaldehyde colloidal spheres as template. The novel YOHSs with up-conversion luminescence has good drug loading amount and drug-release efficiency; moreover, it exhibits pH-responsive release patterns. In particular, the YOHSs sample exhibits low cytotoxicity and excellent degradable properties in acid buffer. After the sample was loaded with anticancer drug doxorubicin (DOX), the antitumor result in vitro indicates that YOHS-DOX might be effective in cancer treatment. The animal imaging test also reveals that the YOHSs drug carrier can be used as an outstanding luminescent probe for bioimaging in vivo application prospects. The results suggest that the degradable drug carrier with up-conversion luminescence may enhance the delivery efficiency of drugs and improve the cancer therapy in clinical applications.

NaYbF4: Yb3+, Tm3+ nanoparticles (UCNPs) capped with oleic acid (OA) have been synthesized via high-temperature solvent reaction. The optimization sample of NaYb0.96Er0.02Tm0.02F4 nanoparticles possess spectral purity (the Snw value is bigger than 0.7) and intense near infrared to near infrared (NIR-to-NIR) upconversion luminescence (UCL) (the power of laser is as low as 3.8 W), which makes them ideal and promising platforms for high contrast bioimaging.

Lanthanide ion-doped metal halides are a promising class of fluorescent materials. In this paper, we investigated the optical properties and photophysical mechanism of Er3+, Yb3+-doped Cs2NaScCl6 phosphor. It was demonstrated that in both up-conversion (UC) and down-shifting emission modes, the increase of Yb3+ concentration resulted in enhancement of the 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 emission of Er3+ in Cs2NaScCl6. In particular, UC emission gradually shifts from green to yellow with the enhancement of the excitation power density observed in Yb3+-rich systems. The complex cross-relaxation behavior between Yb3+ and Er3+ results in these phenomena. New paradigms are provided for the development of multimodal and dynamic fluorescent anticounterfeiting materials.

The near-infrared-II (NIR-II) fluorescence thermometer based on rare earth-doped double perovskite is rarely. Herein, Er 3+ -Ho 3+ and Yb 3+ co-doped lead-free double perovskite La 2 MgTiO 6 (LMTO) phosphors were synthesized by a conventional high temperature solid phase method. The phase purity and morphology of the samples were analyzed using XRD and FE-SEM. The NIR-II luminescence properties of LMTO: Er 3+ -Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ phosphors were systematically investigated under laser irradiation at 980 nm. A NIR-II fluorescence thermometer was also designed based on non-thermal coupled energy levels originated from the 4 I 13/2 energy level of Er 3+ and the 5 I 6 energy level of Ho 3+ . The maximum value of relative sensitivity (S r ) was 0.54 % at 513 K. Compared to visible thermometers (LMTO: Er 3+ -Yb 3+ and LMTO: Ho 3+ -Yb 3+ ), the NIR-II thermometers offer better temperature measurement capability and penetration depth. All the experimental results show that the NIR-II thermometer with a wider range and higher sensitivity has been realized, which puts forward a new idea for the design and optimization of NIR-II thermometers.

Excitation wavelength controllable lanthanide upconversion allows for real-time manipulation of luminescent color in a composition-fixed material, which has been proven to be conducive to a variety of applications, such as optical anti-counterfeiting and information security. However, current available materials highly rely on the elaborate core–shell structure in order to ensure efficient excitation-dependent energy transfer routes. Herein, multicolor upconversion luminescence in response to both near-infrared I and near-infrared II (NIR-I and NIR-II) excitations is realized in a novel but simple NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+phosphor. The remarkably enhanced red emission ratio under 1532 nm excitation, compared with that under 980 nm excitation, could be attributed to the Yb3+-mediated cross-relaxation energy transfers. Moreover, multi-wavelength excitable temperature-dependent (295–823 K) upconversion luminescence realizes a ratiometric thermometry relying on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) of Er3+. Detailed investigations demonstrate that changing excitation wavelength makes little difference for the performances of TCL-based ratiometric thermometry of NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+. These findings gain more insights to manipulate cross-relaxations for excitation controllable upconversion in single activator doped materials and benefit the cognition of the effect of excitation wavelength on ratiometric luminescence thermometry.

Optical thermometric and anti-counterfeiting multifunctional materials hold great promise for practical applications, yet their development continues to encounter considerable challenges. Here, we successfully developed a new Bi 3+ ,Er 3+ co-doped Y 2 GaSbO 7 powder with multicolor luminescence. Through adjusting the excitation wavelengths, emissions in violet, blue, green, and orange are achieved. The phosphor demonstrates remarkable thermochromism due to the distinct temperature-dependent luminescence of Bi 3+ and Er 3+ , confirmed under irradiation at 312 or 980 nm. By reducing the power of 980 nm laser or increasing the laser-to-sample distance, the emitting color can be precisely tuned from gold‒yellow or yellow‒green to orange‒red. These diverse luminescent characteristics enable the creation of a multilevel anti-counterfeiting system. Moreover, a four-mode optical thermometry with an optimal relative sensitivity of 1.98% K −1 , a high thermal resolution of 0.15 K, and signal reversibility was established using fluorescence intensity ratio and fluorescence decay time. These results disclose that Y 2 GaSbO 7 :Bi 3+ ,Er 3+ phosphor is a promising candidate for temperature monitoring and dynamic anti-counterfeiting applications.

Rare-earth ions Yb 3+ /Er 3+ co-doped Ca 2 LaNbO 6 have been synthesized successfully. • Photoluminescence of Ca 2 LaNbO 6 :Yb 3+ /Er 3+ under 980 nm excitation was investigated. • Temperature dependence of LIR of I 524 nm / I 565 nm and I 1569 nm / I 1543 nm were studied. • Temperature-dependent decay lifetimes at 524 nm and 565 nm were analyzed. • This work enables multi-mode, anti-interference optical thermometry. Optical thermometry based on the intrinsic luminescent properties of rare-earth ions offers effective immunity to environmental interference. To enable multi-mode thermometry – that is, simultaneous acquisition of the luminescence intensity ratio ( LIR ) and lifetime - Ca 2 LaNbO 6 co-doped with Yb 3+ and Er 3+ was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The phase structure, morphological information, and photoluminescence properties were systematically investigated. Under 980 nm excitation, the optimal luminescence intensity is attained when the concentrations of Yb 3+ and Er 3+ are 12 mol% and 6 mol%, respectively. The two-photon process gives rise to emission mechanisms within the visible range (524 nm: 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 ; 565 nm: 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 ; 664 nm: 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 ); the single-photon process leads to emission in the near-infrared region (1544 nm: 4 I 13/2 → 4 I 15/2 ). The LIRs for visible up-conversion emissions ( I 524 nm / I 565 nm ) and near-infrared down-conversion emissions ( I 1569 nm / I 1543 nm ), along with the lifetimes of the 524 nm and 565 nm emissions, all exhibit pronounced temperature dependence that can be effectively fitted by exponential functions. Overall, this study demonstrates potential for multi-mode, non-contact optical thermometry with anti-interference capabilities. Yb 2 WO 6 : Er 3+ , Y 3+ phosphors were successfully synthesized using the high-temperature solid-state method. • Y 3+ doping significantly enhances the upconversion luminescence intensity of Yb 2 WO 6 : Er 3+ phosphor. • The red and green emission intensities are increased by 2.17 and 2.20 times. • The maximum of relative sensitivity and absolute sensitivity is 6.97%·K⁻¹ at 450 K and 1.90%·K −1 at 523 K, respectively. Er 3+ and Y 3+ ions co-doped Yb 2 WO 6 phosphors were synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 980 nm excitation, the Y 3+ -substituted Yb 2 WO 6 :Er 3+ phosphors exhibit green emission near 545 nm and red emission near 657 nm, assigned to the Er 3+ 4 S 3/2 → 4 I 15/2 and 4 F 9/2 → 4 I 15/2 transitions, respectively. At the optimum Y 3+ content of x = 0.20, the red and green emission intensities are 2.17 and 2.20 times those of the Y 3+ -free sample, respectively. Yb 3+ ions act as the primary sensitizers by absorbing 980 nm photons and transferring energy to Er 3+ . Sequential Yb 3+ →Er 3+ energy-transfer steps, together with phonon-assisted relaxation among Er 3+ levels, populate the 4 S 3/2 and 4 F 9/2 emitting states. The enhanced upconversion emission and the measured temperature-dependent fluorescence-intensity ratio indicate that the phosphor is a potential candidate for non-contact optical thermometry over 298–523 K. S R reaches its maximum value of 6.97%·K −1 at 450 K. while S A attains its maximum of 1.90%·K −1 at 523 K. Download: Download high-res image (167KB) Download: Download full-size image
