Phase Equilibria and Phase Diagrams of Na+//F–, CO32–, PO43–-H2O Quaternary and Subsystems at 313.15 K

Qing Hao,Huan Zhou,Mengli Zhang,Si Wu,Junfang Yang

Rare-earth ore concentrate is calcined at high temperature by the alkaline method, and the associated elements fluorine and phosphorus are enriched in the form of sodium fluoride and sodium phosphate in water elution. To separate and recover fluorine and phosphorus from the aqueous solution, the solid–liquid equilibrium behaviors of the quaternary systems Na+//F–, CO32–, PO43–-H2O and their two sub-ternary systems NaF-Na3PO4-H2O and Na2CO3-Na3PO4-H2O at 313.15 K were studied via the isothermal solubility phase equilibrium method. Solubility data, liquid density and pH, two complete isothermal phase diagrams of the ternary system, and one complete isothermal phase diagram of the quaternary system were obtained. The results showed that two double salts NaF·2Na3PO4·19H2O and Na3PO4·3Na2CO3·8H2O occurred in the respective ternary systems. Five solid species of one anhydrous salt of NaF, two hydrous salts of Na2CO3·H2O and Na3PO4·12H2O, and two double salts of Na3PO4·3Na2CO3·8H2O and NaF·2Na3PO4·19H2O were found in the quaternary system. The phase diagram of the quaternary system consisted of three invariant points, five crystallization regions, and seven univariate curves. Na3PO4 easily combined with NaF to form double salt NaF·2Na3PO4·19H2O, which occupied a larger phase region in the quaternary phase diagram. The increase in Na2CO3 will lead to the decrease in the solubility of Na3PO4 and NaF in the system.

Claulansine F–Donepezil Hybrids as Anti-Alzheimer’s Disease Agents with Cholinergic, Free-Radical Scavenging, and Neuroprotective Activities

Yingda Zang,Ke Liu,Weiping Wang,Chuangjun Li,Jie Ma,Jingzhi Yang,Xinyi Chen,Xiaoliang Wang,Dongming Zhang

The multifactorial nature of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) calls for the development of multitarget agents addressing key pathogenic processes. A total of 26 Claulansine F–donepezil hybrids were designed and synthesized as multitarget drugs. Among these compounds, six compounds exhibited excellent acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity (half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) 1.63–4.62 μM). Moreover, (E)-3-(8-(tert-Butyl)-3,3-dimethyl-3,11-dihydropyrano[3,2-a]carbazol-5-yl)-N-((1-(2-chlorobenzyl)piperidin-4-yl)methyl)acrylamide (6bd) exhibited better neuroprotective effects against OGD/R (oxygen–glucose deprivation/reoxygenation) than lead compound Claulansine F. Furthermore,6bdcould cross the blood–brain barrier in vitro. More importantly, compared to edaravone,6bdhad stronger free-radical scavenging activity. Molecular docking studies revealed that6bdcould interact with the catalytic active site of AChE. All of these outstanding in vitro results indicate6bdas a leading structure worthy of further investigation. Keywords:Alzheimer’s disease;Claulansine F–donepezil hybrids;AChE inhibitory activity;free-radical scavenging activity;neuroprotective effects

N,F-Codoped Carbon Nanocages: An Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Peroxide Electroproduction in Alkaline and Acidic Solutions

Nan Jia,Ting Yang,Shufeng Shi,Xinbing Chen,Zhongwei An,Yu Chen,Shiwei Yin,Pei Chen

Exploiting efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) electroproduction by oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly desired in practical application. Herein, nitrogen- and fluoride-codoped carbon nanocages (NF-Cs) are successfully synthesized through a simple and scalable template method. With the aid of a porous structure, a large surface area, and the introduction of N and F atoms, NF-Cs show excellent electrocatalytic performance for H2O2 electroproduction in alkaline solution (pH 13) with a faradaic efficiency of 89.6% at very positive applied potential (0.74 V). In acid solution (pH 0.35), the faradaic efficiency of H2O2 electroproduction stably maintains at 85%–88% in the range of 0.4–0.72 V potential. The experimental and theoretical results reveal that the strong synergistic effect between the doped N and F atoms facilitate the H2O2 electroproduction through 2e ORR. That is, the doped N atoms promote O2 molecule adsorption on the catalyst surface, and the F atoms facilitate the desorption of the *OOH intermediate, which is the key factor for the NF-Cs efficiently catalyzing H2O2 electroproduction. These results provide beneficial references for reasonably designing effective carbon-based electrocatalysts for H2O2 electroproduction.

Regulating Reversible Phase Transition Behaviors by Poly-H/F Substitution in Hybrid Perovskite-Like 2[CH2FCH2NH3]·[CdCl4]

Ning Song,Shao-Peng Chen,Xiao-Wei Fan,Yu-Hui Tan,Wen-Juan Wei,Yun-Zhi Tang

The molecular design and regulation has shown bright future for constructing smart molecular materials such as ferroelectrics, dielectric switches, electro-optic effect, and so forth. Here, by poly-H/F substitution in a simple organic-inorganic hybrid 2[CH2FCH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 1 (CH2FCH2NH3 = fluorine ethylamine cation), we obtained two novel hybrids, namely, 2[CHF2CH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 2 (CHF2CH2NH3 = 2,2′-difluorine ethylamine cation) and 2[CF3CH2NH3]·[CdCl4], 3 (CF3CH2NH3 = 2,2′,2″-trifluorine ethylamine cation). Further investigations show that compounds 1, 2, and 3 experience solid reversible phase transitions with temperatures at 294, 319, and 329 K respectively. These unique phase transitions were confirmed by their remarkable dielectric and heat anomalies around the phase transition temperatures. X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses before and after the phase transitions show that the order–disorder motions of F atoms and the twist motions from the 2D [CdCl4]2– framework lead to these solid reversible phase transitions. Also, the Hirshfeld surface calculation of compounds 1, 2, and 3 suggests that the increasing ratio of the F···F interaction from the intermolecular interaction makes a major contribution for the substantial increase of their phase transition temperatures.

A silver nanosol SERS quantitative method for trace F− detection using the oxidized tetramethylbenzidine as molecular probes

Dan Li,Chongning Li,Aihui Liang,Zhiliang Jiang

Fluoride constitutes an essential component for the formation of hard bones and teeth. However long-term excessive intake of fluoride causes chronic poisoning changes in the body. Therefore, the determination of its content is of great significance. Herein, a sensitive SERS quantitative analysis method was proposed to detect F − . Trace Fe 3+ exhibited strong catalysis of H 2 O 2 oxidizing 3, 3′, 5, 5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) under the ultrasonic irradiation, and the reaction product called TMB diimine (TMB OX ) not only had strong fluorescence, but also had SERS activity in the silver nanosol substrate. Upon addition of fluoride ion (F − ), the stable complex of [FeF 6 ] 3− formed, and could inhibit the catalytic action of Fe 3+ , resulting in the SERS and fluorescence signal decreasing due to the TMB OX concentration decreasing. In the range of 2–1000 nmol/L F − , the SERS intensity Δ I decreased line with the concentration increased, with a detection limit of 0.7 nmol/L. Based on the catalytic amplifying strategy and the TMB OX molecular probes, ultratrace Fe 3+ could be also detected by SERS and fluorescence methods.

I-C-F-6 attenuates chronic cerebral hypoperfusion-induced neurological injury in mice by modulating microglia polarization

Deng Shanshan,Gao Yuan,Lv Mengting,Li Xinyu,Ma Yulin,Guo Yuchen,Li Tiejun,Zhang Yuefan

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) is the leading cause of chronic cerebral dysfunction syndrome with its complex pathological mechanisms involving cortical and hippocampal neuronal loss, white matter lesions, and neuroinflammation. I-C-F-6 is a septapeptide, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of I-C-F-6 in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH)-induced neurological injury. C57BL/6 J mice were subjected to bilateral common carotid artery stenosis (BCAS), and BV2 microglia cells were induced with oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD). In vivo, mice were divided randomly into four groups: Sham, BCAS, GBE (30 mg/kg), and I-C-F-6 (0.5 mg/kg). In vitro, microglia were divided randomly into four groups: control, OGD, I-C-F-6 (25 μg/mL), and Shikonin (800 nmol/L). Through LFB, TUNEL, and NeuN staining, we found that I-C-F-6 was able to mitigate myelin pathology and reduce the number of apoptotic neurons. Furthermore, immunofluorescence staining revealed that I-C-F-6 was able to reduce microglia clustering and downregulate NF-κB p65. We also observed a significant downregulation of M1 phenotype microglia signature genes, such as TNF-α, iNOS, and upregulation of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as Arg-1 and IL-10, indicating that I-C-F-6 may mainly reduce polarization towards the M1 phenotype in microglia. Notably, I-C-F-6 downregulated the expression of NF-κB signaling pathway-related proteins IKK-β and NF-κB p65, as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and iNOS. In conclusion, I-C-F-6 can improve neurological damage, alleviate neuroinflammation, and inhibit microglia polarization to the M1 phenotype via the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Improvement on Magnetocaloric Effect through Structural Evolution in Gadolinium Borate Halides Ba2Gd(BO3)2X (X = F, Cl)

Yuwei Chen,Pifu Gong,Ruixin Guo,Feidi Fan,Jun Shen,Guochun Zhang,Heng Tu

A new Gd3+-containing borate Ba2Gd(BO3)2F has been successfully grown via the high-temperature solution method using BaF2-NaF-B2O3 flux. Ba2Gd(BO3)2F crystallizing in the orthorhombic space group Pnma is with lattice parameters a = 7.571(4) Å, b = 10.424(5) Å, c = 8.581(4) Å, α = β = γ = 90°, and Z = 2. Its three-dimensional framework was constructed from interesting pinwheel-like [Gd(BO3)F]∞ layers bridged by sharing [BO3]3–, which is different from the [Gd(BO3)]∞ layer in the model structure Ba2Gd(BO3)2Cl. The magnetic measurements indicated that Ba2Gd(BO3)2F has a larger magnetocaloric effect with −ΔSm,max = 27.82 J·kg–1·K–1at 2 K and 9 T than that of Ba2Gd(BO3)2Cl under the same conditions. Moreover, thermal stability, infrared spectrum (IR), and ultraviolet–visible-near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectrum were carried out to characterize the title compounds. The first-principles computations also looked into the electronic band structures, densities of states, and refractive indices.

Uptake and elimination of emerging polyfluoroalkyl substance F-53B in zebrafish larvae: Response of oxidative stress biomarkers

Yongming Wu,Mi Deng,Yuanxiang Jin,Xiyan Mu,Xiaoli He,Nha-Thi Luu,Chunyan Yang,Wenqing Tu

6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B) has been widely applied as a mist suppressant to replace perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the metal plating industry in China for decades. Recently, F-53B has been frequently identified in the aquatic environment and wild-caught fish. However, studies on the uptake and elimination kinetics, and the toxicological effects of F-53B were very scarce. In this study, zebrafish larvae (72 h post fertilization, hpf) were exposed to F-53B (10, 100  μ g/L) for 48 h, followed by a 24 h of depuration to examine both the dynamics of accumulation and elimination of F-53B and responses of antoxidant defense system in fish. The results showed that F-53B rapidly accumulated in zebrafish larvae in a concentration and time-dependent manner with BCF values of 3612–3615, but was eliminated slowly (half-life ranged from 241.5 to 258.6 h). F-53B exposure induced oxidative stress in zebrafish larvae, as reflected by the reduction in the GSH and MDA contents, CAT, SOD, CuZn-SOD, and GSH-ST activities, and the increase in GSH-Px activity as well as CAT and SOD protein levels. However, these oxidative stress markers were restored to control levels except for a decrease in protein level of SOD after depuration. Collectively, the results of this work indicate that F-53B behaves like PFOS and is bioaccumulative and persistent in zebrafish larvae, and further induced oxidative stress responses.

Design of a Janus F-TiO2@PPS Porous Membrane with Asymmetric Wettability for Switchable Oil/Water Separation

Chao Yang,Na Han,Changye Han,Menglu Wang,Wenxin Zhang,Weijing Wang,Zongxuan Zhang,Wei Li,Xingxiang Zhang

Extremely asymmetric wettability, high wetting selectivity, instantaneous superwetting behaviors (low transmembrane resistance), and superior resistance to chemicals and solvents are needed for Janus membranes for switchable oil/water separation. However, it is still challenging to obtain Janus membranes with such properties. In this study, a surface with metastable hydrophobicity is constructed on one side of the chemically stable superhydrophilic TiO2@PPS membrane by adjusting the hydrophobization depth and the morphology of the hydrophobic layer via a water–oil interfacial grafting. The prepared Janus membrane exhibits a high water contact angle difference of ∼150° between its two surfaces with maintaining the superior penetrability of the original membrane, which makes it capable to separate both oil-in-water and water-in-oil emulsions with high fluxes and accuracy. The separation efficiency is higher than 98% for the separation of the two kinds of emulsions. The fluxes of the surfactant-free toluene-in-water and water-in-toluene emulsions are up to 6.4 × 102 and 9.5 × 102 L m–2 h–1, respectively. Furthermore, the Janus membrane exhibits desirable antifouling performance and reusability during usage.

Facile preparation of Eu3+ and F− co-doped luminescent hydroxyapatite polymer composites via the photo-RAFT polymerization

Long Huang,Weihua Luo,Meiying Liu,Jianwen Tian,Qiang Huang,Hongye Huang,Junfeng Hui,Yuanqing Wen,Xiaoyong Zhang,Yen Wei

The luminescent hydroxyapatite nanorods co-doped with Eu 3+ and F − (named as FAp:Eu 3+ ) were synthesized through liquid-solid-solution strategy to control their size and morphology as well as improve their fluorescence. However, these luminescent FAp:Eu 3+ nanorods are hydrophobic nature and cannot be directly used for biomedical applications. In this work, we developed a novel strategy for surface modification of FAp:Eu 3+ nanorods with the combination of the surface ligand exchange reaction and photo-initiated reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (photo-RAFT) polymerization using the biocompatible and hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) as the monomer. We demonstrated that the photo-RAFT polymerization is a facile and efficient route to fabricate hydrophilic FAp:Eu 3+ -polyPEGMA composites based on a series of characterization techniques. The FAp:Eu 3+ -polyPEGMA composites still well maintained the morphology and luminescent properties. Furthermore, the resultant FAp:Eu 3+ -polyPEGMA composites showed low cytotoxicity and desirable cell uptake behavior. These features suggested that the FAp:Eu 3+ -polyPEGMA composites are of great potential for biological imaging applications. More importantly, the photo-RAFT polymerization should be promising for preparation of many other luminescent nanocomposites owing to their advantages of photo-RAFT polymerization such as low polymerization temperature, high efficiency, absence of metal catalysts and good monomer applicability. It is therefore, the photo-RAFT could be extended for fabrication of many other multifunctional fluorescent composites for different biomedical applications.

Si–C–F decorated porous carbon materials: A new class of electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

Syed Comail Abbas,Kui Ding,Qin Liu,Yiyin Huang,Yakun Bu,Jing Wu,Jiangquan Lv,Muhammad Arsalan Ghausi,Yaobing Wang

The development of efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts composed of low cost and earth abundant elements is imperative for several energy systems. It has been reported that metal-free co-doped materials play a key role in the oxygen reduction reactions. However, a Si/F co-doped material has never been considered as an electrocatalyst for the ORR. Herein, we report a Si–C–F decorated three-dimensional porous carbon material by a facile pyrolysis of a mixture of D-glucose, ammonium fluoride and SiO2 nanoparticles in an argon atmosphere. It shows an excellent electrocatalytic performance with an onset potential of E = 0.24 V and a limiting current density of I = 4.5 mA cm−2 which is better than that of traditional electrocatalysts under neutral conditions. This outstanding electrocatalytic performance is due to the synergistic effect of silicon and fluorine which causes a change in the charge distribution and energetic characteristics of the Si–C–F decorated porous carbon material. For the practical application, a microbial fuel cell equipped with this electrocatalyst as the cathode reveals a high maximum power output and open circuit voltage (1026 mW m−2 and 780 mV), which are higher than those of commercial 20% Pt/C catalysts (913 mW m−2 and 750 mV).

Efficient degradation of F-53B as PFOS alternative in water by plasma discharge: Feasibility and mechanism insights

Han Zhang,Yinyin Zhang,Luxiang Zhu,Yanan Liu

The frequent detection of 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B) in various environments has raised concerns owing to its comparable or even higher environmental persistence and toxicity than perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). This study investigated the plasma degradation of F-53B for the first time using a water film plasma discharge system. The results revealed that F-53B demonstrated a higher rate constant but similar defluorination compared to PFOS, which could be ascribed to the introduction of the chlorine atom . Successful elimination (94.8–100 %) was attained at F-53B initial concentrations between 0.5 and 10 mg/L, with energy yields varying from 15.1 to 84.5 mg/kWh. The mechanistic exploration suggested that the decomposition of F-53B mainly occurred at the gas-liquid interface, where it directly reacted with reactive species generated by gas discharge . F-53B degradation pathways involving dechlorination , desulfonation , carboxylation , C-O bond cleavage , and stepwise CF 2 elimination were proposed based on the identified byproducts and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, the demonstrated effectiveness in removing F-53B in various coexisting ions and water matrices highlighted the robust anti-interference ability of the treatment process. These findings provide mechanistic insights into the plasma degradation of F-53B, showcasing the potential of plasma processes for eliminating PFAS alternatives in water.
