Synthesis of hypercrosslinked calix[4]arenes anchored with Fe(III) via phosphate groups for excellent uranyl extraction from wastewater and seawater

Xiying Zhu,Lijia Liu,Yudan Wang,Fuqiu Ma,Yao Tian,Hongxing Dong,Chunhong Zhang

An ideal adsorption material of uranium with not only a high adsorption capacity and high selectivity but also a broad applicability is required. In this study, a porous Fe(III) complex of phosphorylated hypercrosslinked calix[4]arenes (C4HP-Fe(III)) was synthesized. Anchoring Fe(III) via phosphate groups on phosphorylated, hypercrosslinked calix[4]arene (C4HP) significantly improved the uranium-adsorption performance, as evidenced by a 47.9 % increase in the uranium uptake (the adsorption capacity increased up to 497.6 mg·g −1 in a 60-mg·L −1  U solution). C4HP-Fe(III) is a promising adsorbent for uranyl extraction and exhibits fast capture kinetics (the adsorption capacity sharply increased in the first 30 min, which accounted for 86 % of the total amount of uranyl ions adsorbed). A study on the effect of pH on the uranium adsorption of C4HP-Fe(III) suggested that the adsorption capacity was higher than 300 mg·g −1 in the pH range of 5–10, even in a strongly acidic environment of pH 3–4, and it also had a specific adsorption capacity (≥ 168.2 mg·g −1 ). Furthermore, C4HP-Fe(III) possesses excellent ion selectivity for uranyl in simulated wastewater and simulated seawater, and the K d U can reach 4.1 × 10 3  mL·g −1 and 4.4 × 10 4  mL·g −1 , respectively. After 6 cycles, C4HP-Fe(III) maintained its original adsorption capacity of 92.2 %. This makes it useful for wide applications and can be used for capturing uranyl ions from industrial wastewater and natural seawater. The effective extraction of uranyl was mainly attributed to the chelation of uranyl ions with both phosphate groups and active hydroxyl groups (due to the introduction of Fe 3+ ).

One-step assembly of Fe(III)-CMC chelate hydrogel onto nanoneedle-like CuO@Cu membrane with superhydrophilicity for oil-water separation

Jiangdong Dai,Zhongshuai Chang,Atian Xie,Ruilong Zhang,Sujun Tian,Wenna Ge,Yongsheng Yan,Chunxiang Li,Wei Xu,Rong Shao

The research of superhydrophilic interface is developing rapidly, but the preparations of superhydrophilic surfaces through simple methods are still challenging. Herein, we reported a facile, rapid and environmentally-friendly approach for preparing a novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane via the thermal oxidation of Cu mesh and one-step coordinated assembly of Fe(III)-CMC chelate hydrogel. Superhydrophilicity was attributed to the hydrophilicity of Fe(III)-CMC chelate hydrogel and nanoneedle-like rough structure of CuO@Cu membrane. The membrane was used to separate a variety of oil/water mixtures and exhibited excellent separation performance. Moreover, the membrane exhibited the excellent durability and superior stability against corrosion conditions. We envision that the Fe(III)-CMC@CuO@Cu membrane with good underwater superoleophobicity could provide a candidate not only for oil/water separation but also many other potential applications such as underwater oil manipulation, self-clean, and bio-adhesion control.

A metal–organic gel based on Fe(III) and bi-pyridine ligand for template synthesis of core/shell composite polymer nanowires

Botian Li,Da Xiao,Dongsheng Deng,Haimu Ye,Qiong Zhou,Liming Tang

In this study, a novel self-assembled metal–organic gel was synthesized from ferric nitrate and a di-topic ligand, bis(3-pyridyl)terephthalate. The gel consisted of a three dimensional network of uniform nanofibers. The gelation exhibited high selectivity to Fe(III) based on metal–ligand coordination. The molar ratio of Fe3+ to ligand had a large influence on the assembly process and the morphology of the gel. The metallogel displayed multi-stimuli responsiveness and excellent heat resistance, thus was further applied as a thermo-stable template for the polymerization of N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide to produce the core/shell polymer composite nanowires. Subsequently, the polymer nanotubes were obtained after ammonia post-treatment, comfirming the feasibility of the template synthesis strategy. According to the rheological measurements, the gel-like products of the composite nanowires exhibited better mechanical strength compared to the gel template.

Construction of a fluorescence switch sensor of Mn doped AgInS2 quantum dots for the detection of Fe (III) and ascorbic acid

Xinyue Gu,Minghua Li,Ya Yan,Julian Miao

The convenience and high efficiency of recently developed I–III–VI group AgInS 2 (AIS) fluorescence sensors have garnered considerable attention. In this study, glutathione (GSH) was employed as a stabilizer to synthesize Mn doped AgInS 2 quantum dots (Mn-AIS QDs) via a one-step hydrothermal method at a lower temperature. The resultant samples displayed favorable photoluminescent characteristics and excellent water dispersibility. The photoluminescence of Mn-AIS QDs is quenched by Fe (III) via a photo-induced electron transfer mechanism (PET), and this quenching can be reversed by ascorbic acid (AA) as a result of the redox reaction between the Mn-AIS-Fe (III) complex and AA. Utilizing the on–off–on fluorescence principle, a fluorescence switch sensor based on Mn-AIS QDs was developed for the detection of Fe (III) and AA. The linear range for the detection of Fe (III) using the Mn-AIS QDs sensor was established to be 0.03–120 µM, with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.16 nM. For the detection of AA within the Mn-AIS-Fe (III) system, the linear range spanned from 0.05 to 180 µM, with a LOD of 0.031 µM. Both Mn-AIS and Mn-AIS-Fe (III) demonstrated robust anti-interference properties, facilitating the accurate detection of Fe (III) in tap water and AA in vitamin C tablets. This approach is notable for its simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and considerable potential for application in the creation of innovative biological and environmental sensors.

Enhanced abiotic and biotic contributions to dechlorination of pentachlorophenol during Fe(III) reduction by an iron-reducing bacterium Clostridium beijerinckii Z

Yan Xu,Yan He,Xiaoli Feng,Luyi Liang,Jianming Xu,Philip C. Brookes,Jianjun Wu

A novel Fe(III) reducing bacterium, Clostridium beijerinckii Z, was isolated from glucose amended paddy slurries, and shown to dechlorinate pentachlorophenol (PCP). Fifty percent of added PCP was removed by C. beijerinckii Z alone, which increased to 83% in the presence of both C. beijerinckii Z and ferrihydrite after 11   days of incubation. Without C. beijerinckii Z, the surface-bound Fe(II) also abiotically dechlorinated more than 40% of the added PCP. This indicated that the biotic dechlorination by C. beijerinckii Z is a dominant process causing PCP transformation through anaerobic dechlorination, and that the dechlorination rates can be accelerated by simultaneous reduction of Fe(III). A biochemical electron transfer coupling process between sorbed Fe(II) produced by C. beijerinckii Z and reductive dehalogenation is a possible mechanism. This finding increases our knowledge of the role of Fe(III) reducing genera of Clostridium in dechlorinating halogenated organic pollutants, such as PCP, in anaerobic paddy soils.

Enhanced PMS activation efficiency and SMX degradation performance via Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycling with efficient CCF@MoS2@GA-Fe catalyst

Dawei Gao,Haixiang Wang,Qiaoli Lu,Chao Ye,Jingsheng Cai,Lili Wang

Antibiotics, widely used to treat bacterial infections and as agricultural feed additives, pose significant environmental threats due to their persistence, particularly sulfamethoxazole (SMX), which is frequently detected in various ecosystems. Traditional wastewater treatment methods are often ineffective in their removal. This study presents a cost-effective three-dimensional CCF@MoS 2 @GA-Fe (CMGF) catalyst, with cotton fabric as a support to enhance peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Findings indicates that Mo(IV) active sites in CMGF significantly enhanced electron transfer and redox cycling of Fe(II)/Fe(III), ensuring sustained PMS activation and achieving approximately 3.8 times higher degradation efficiency compared to non-catalytic processes. After five cycles, CMGF retains its high catalytic activity. Key active species during PMS activation include singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and sulfate radicals (SO 4 − •). This research elucidates the catalytic mechanisms and degradation pathways of the CMGF/PMS system, highlighting its potential for removing organic pollutants from water.

Efficient degradation of Rhodamine B by visible-light-driven biomimetic Fe(III) complex/peroxymonosulfate system: The key role of FeV=O

Chen-Xuan Li,Rui Wang,Wen Sun,Kangping Cui,Xian-Zhong Fu,Minshu Cui,Yihan Chen,Zhi Guo,Yingying Liu

Advanced oxidation systems (AOS) hold promise for tackling refractory dyes in wastewater, yet the quest for efficient systems tailored to the degradation of dye remains a formidable hurdle. Here, a novel visible-light-driven AOS, consisting of biomimetic Fe(III) salen complex (FeL, salen= N, N-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), was proposed for highly efficient degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), a model dye. The proposed AOS was capable of degrading 94.8 % RhB in 40 min, outperforming the typical Fe 3+ -based system, which achieved only 52.6 % pollutant degradation under identical conditions. As indicated by experimental results and theoretical calculations, the unique Fe-N 2 O 2 coordination structure of FeL facilitated the adsorption of terminal O (O3) at PMS site, thereby enhancing the heterolysis of the O-O bond and generating high-valent iron-oxo species (i.e., Fe Ⅴ =O) rather than radicals (SO 4 •− , HO • ). The system demonstrated robust resistance to interference from environmental anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− ), pH variations (initial pH 3.0–11.0) and humic acid . More attractively, it achieved 87.3 % chroma and 37.6 % chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal in real dye wastewater samples. This work may shed light on the understanding and development of biomimetic Fe complexes-based AOS for wastewater treatment .

Improving Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Chemodynamic Therapy Properties via Tuning the Fe(II)/Fe(III) Ratio in Hydrophilic Single-Atom Nanobowls

Qing Luo,Qian Ma,Taoxia Liu,Yiting Luo,Lianying Wang,Chang Guo,Leyu Wang

We developed an intrinsic hydrophilic single-atom iron nanobowl (Fe-SANB) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided tumor microenvironment-triggered cancer therapy. Benefiting from the sufficient exposure of Fe single atoms and the intrinsic hydrophilicity of the bowl-shaped structure, the Fe-SANBs exhibited a superior performance for T1-weighted MRI with an r1 value of 11.48 mM–1 s–1, which is 3-fold higher than that of the commercial Gd-DTPA (r1 = 3.72 mM–1 s–1). After further coembedding Gd single atoms in the nanobowls, the r1 value can be greatly improved to 19.54 mM–1 s–1. In tumor microenvironment (TME), the Fe-SANBs can trigger pH-induced Fenton-like activity to generate highly toxic hydroxyl radicals for high-efficiency chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Both the MRI and CDT efficiency of these nanobowls can be optimized by tuning the ratio of Fe(II)/Fe(III) in the Fe-SANBs via controlling the calcination temperature. Furthermore, the generation of •OH at the tumor site can be accelerated via the photothermal effect of Fe-SANBs, thus promoting CDT efficacy. Both in vitro and in vivo results confirmed that our nanoplatform exhibited high T1-weighted MRI contrast, robust biocompatibility, and satisfactory tumor treatment, providing a potential nanoplatform for MRI-guided TME-triggered precise cancer therapy.

A Biosensor for Simultaneous Detection of Epinephrine and Ascorbic Acid Based on Fe(III)–Polyhistidine-Functionalized Multi-Wall Carbon Nanotube Composites

Bingkai Han,Yuan Chen,Hongtao Wang,Jilong Yan,Guang Liu,Ziru Huang,Chenghang Zhou

Epinephrine (EP) is a very important chemical transmitter in the transmission of nerve impulses in the central nervous system of mammals. Ascorbic acid (AA) is considered to be the most important extracellular fluid antioxidant and has important antioxidant properties in the cell. In this study, a series of transition metal–polyhistidine-carboxylated multi-wall carbon nanotube nanocomposites were synthesized, and their simultaneous catalytic effects on epinephrine and ascorbic acid were investigated. The results showed that nanocomposites based on iron ions had the highest catalytic activity. The prepared biosensor expressed high selectivity toward EP and AA with LOD values of 0.1 μΜ (AA) and 0.01 μΜ (EP), and sensitivity values of 4.18 μA mM−1with a range of 0.001–5 mM (AA), 50.98 μA mM−1with a range of 0.2–100 μM (EP), and 265.75 μA mM−1with a range of 0.1–1.0 mM (EP). Moreover, it showed good stability, good repeatability and high selectivity in real sample detection. This work is a reference for the design of new electrochemical enzyme-free biosensors and the detection of biomarkers.

Synthesis of ferrihydrite/polyaniline composite using waste Fe(III)/EPS-cultures with polyaniline and its application for tetracycline photo-Fenton degradation

Shuyue Wang,Dan Hu,Yang Liu,Huixin Xiong

Antibiotics pollutants are arousing seriously environmental issues, so the highly efficient photo-Fenton catalysts have been developed in their treatments. In this work, according to the results of XRD, Raman, FTIR, and XPS, ferrihydrite/polyaniline (Fh/PANI) catalyst could be successfully prepared in waste iron-bacterial cultures (shorted as Fe(III)/EPS-solutions) with PANI conductor ((C 6 H 7 N) n , 200–300 nm). The Fh/PANI was an optimal photo-Fenton catalyst with good physical properties for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH, C 22 H 25 ClN 2 O 8 ) degradation. In photo-Fenton systems with 30 mmol/L H 2 O 2 , 40 mg/L TCH, 0.2 g/L catalyst, and pH 4.0 under the visible light irradiation, degradation efficiency was 94% for Fh/PANI (82% for Fh). Kinetics data of TCH degradation well followed to pseudo-first-order model ( R 2 =0.974 for Fh/PANI, and R 2 =0.929 for Fh). The Fh/PANI catalyst had a good stability for TCH degradation, and the efficiencies ranged in 94%−77% within its five runs. The TCH could be efficiently mineralized into H 2 O and CO 2 inorganic molecules, and the producing ∙O 2 − was the key action group. These results indicate Fh/PANI photo-Fenton catalyst will have a potential application in treating antibiotic polluted waters. It also can provide a good approach of preparing Fe-(oxyhydr)oxide/conductor composites in waste iron-bacterial cultures.

Co-oxidation of As(III) and Fe(II) by oxygen through complexation between As(III) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) species

Wei Ding,Jing Xu,Tao Chen,Chengshuai Liu,Jinjun Li,Feng Wu

Previous studies have shown that the oxidation of Fe(II) by molecular oxygen can lead to the co-oxidation of As(III) at neutral pH. However, the mechanism of As(III) oxidation in the presence of Fe(II) with respect to the interaction between As(III) and Fe(II) is still unclear. In this work, we examined the oxidation of As(III) in the presence of Fe(II) in air-saturated water, which is affected by pH, co-existing phosphate, and scavengers ( tert -butanol, superoxide dismutase, catalase and dimethylsulfoxide). Results confirm that the formation of the Fe(II)–As(III) complex (formation constant, K Fe(II)–As(III)  = 10 3.86  M –1 ) plays an extremely important role in the initial stage of As(III) oxidation at pH 7.25. The oxidation of Fe(II)–As(III) promotes the production of H 2 O 2 and colloidal ferric hydroxide. H 2 O 2 reacts with the Fe(II)–As(III) complex through oxidizing Fe(II) to Fe(IV), which then causes the partial oxidation (ca. 50%) of As(III). The other part of As(III) oxidation by H 2 O 2 occurs, in the form of Fe(III)–As(III) complex, through direct electron transfer from As(III) to H 2 O 2 but not through Fe(IV). This work provides new mechanistic insight into arsenic and iron redox chemistry in the environment and furthers our understanding of Fenton reactions at neutral pH.

Enhanced nitenpyram degradation via hematite/LDH co-catalysis in a peroxymonosulfate/Fe(III)/Fe(II)-EDDS system: Toward sustainable water treatment

Jiangfu Zheng,Xiaoming Li,Jinglin Ding,Xingong Li

Research on peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation via catalytic processes for degrading trace organic pollutants in aquatic environments has attracted considerable interest. Although iron is widely used in homogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), its effectiveness in activating PMS remains suboptimal. This study demonstrates that the environmentally benign chelating agent ethylenediamine- N , N ′-dibutyldicarboxylate (EDDS) markedly enhances iron-mediated PMS activation. With six coordination sites, EDDS forms stable five- and six-membered chelate rings with Fe(III)/Fe(II) ions, facilitating efficient PMS activation and leading to complete degradation of NTP. Beyond improving iron's catalytic performance, EDDS also inhibits iron disproportionation, thereby promoting PMS activation and facilitating NTP mineralization. Moreover, the system achieved removal efficiencies exceeding 96 % for tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and methylene blue (MB) within 35 min. Systematic experiments elucidated the critical role of the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle in the HeLDH/EDDS/PMS system, highlighting the central involvement of Fe(III) species in the regeneration of Fe(II). Multiple reactive oxygen species, including •OH, SO₄• − , RO•, O₂• − , and 1 O₂, were identified as contributors to NTP degradation. Transformation pathways and mechanistic details of NTP degradation were revealed via mass spectrometry, and toxicity evaluations confirmed a significant reduction in the ecotoxicity of oxidation products. The system also exhibited strong resistance to humic acid interference and effectively degraded multiple organic contaminants, underscoring its potential for sustainable water purification applications.
