Herein, we develop a novel method to synthesize lanthanide-functionalized carbon quantum dots via free-radical copolymerization using the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a functional monomer and introducing a lanthanide complex to obtain the dual-emission fluorescent composite material FCQDs-Ln(TFA)3 (Ln = Eu, Tb; TFA: trifluoroacetylacetone). The obtained composites were fully characterized, and their structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, a series of white-light-emitting polymer composite films FCQDs- (Eu:Tb)(TFA)3/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were designed and synthesized by adjusting the ratio of Eu(TFA)3/Tb(TFA)3 under different wavelengths. More significantly, FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 was selected as a sensitive probe for sensing metal cations due to excellent photoluminescence properties, revealing a unique capability of FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 of detecting Fe(III) cations with high efficiency and selectivity. Furthermore, the sensing experiment results indicated that FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 is ideal as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe3+ ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe3+ is 0.158 μM, which is superior to many other previous related research studies. This pioneering work provides a new idea and method for constructing a dual-emission ratio sensor based on carbon quantum dots and also extends the potential application in the biological and environmental fields.

Waste activated sludge (WAS), as a kind of hydrophilic colloid substance, is still a major technical challenge in wastewater treatment industry. For enhancing WAS dewaterability, the approach of tannic acid (TA)/Fe 3+ conditioning was verified to be feasible. During conditioning, sludge extracellular protein decreased pronouncedly. Fluorescence quenching analysis revealed that Fe 3+ reduced the binding sites of extracellular polymeric substances available for TA, and the formed TA-Fe 3+ complexes possibly promoted TA aggregates’ settlement and compression. Sludge supernatant viscosity, absolute value of zeta potential and pH value also decreased distinctly, and sludge particle size became larger than that of raw sludge or Fe 3+ -conditioned sludge. Scanning electron microscope suggested that sludge surface morphology became more compacted and denser after TA/Fe 3+ conditioning, which was helpful for the release of water trapped in sludge bio-polymeric network. With 0.15 mmol/gTS TA and 0.9 mmol/gTS Fe 3+ conditioning, sludge capillary suction time, specific resistance of filtration and water content of dewatered sludge cake were decreased by 76.3%, 94.7% and 13.5%, respectively. The findings not only shed new light on the means of applying natural plant organic polymer coupled with inorganic cation to promote WAS dewaterability but offered a potentially theoretical principle of the utilization of plant waste containing TA in WAS treatment.

A novel fluorescent probe XDS based on 4-methylumbelliferone and 2-picolylamine platforms has been designed and synthesized, which behaves fast relay recognition of Fe 3+ and PO 4 3− via a fluorescence “on−off−on” response signal. Probe XDS exhibited very high sensitivity and unique selectivity for Fe 3+ over other common metal ions , and the detection limit of was 3.2 × 10 −7 M. Moreover, the addition of the PO 4 3− ions could cause the recovery of fluorescence. This relay recognition feature of probe XDS has potential applications in the determination of trace amount of Fe 3+ and PO 4 3− in environmental systems. Interestingly, fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated that the probe XDS can also be used to monitoring the intracellular Fe 3+ in RAMOS cells.

Wastewater containing trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) is usually poorly purified by unmodified polyamide (PA) membrane due to its poor selectivity and low water permeability. Herein we design a series of carboxylate-functionalized PA membranes via the chelation of Fe 3+ and carboxylate for efficient TrOCs removal through forward osmosis (FO). Citric acid, oxalic acid and their sodium salts are individually tethered to the PA membrane in water under ambient conditions. Factors influencing membrane performance are systematically investigated. The carboxylate based modification greatly improves the membrane properties that substantially enhance its separation performance. The sodium citrate (CA-Na) modified membrane produces water fluxes of up to 106% (PRO mode) and 144% (FO mode) higher than those of the PA membrane. This membrane also increases the TrOCs rejection from 75% to over 92%, irrespective of the TrOCs properties. Membrane fouling experiments reveal that the water flux of the CA-Na membrane declines by 26%, while that of the PA membrane decreases by 38% after 10-h tests. The flux recovery ratio of the CA-Na membrane achieves over 95% after physical cleaning. This study demonstrates an eco-friendly protocol to construct PA-based membrane for efficient TrOCs removal.

Efficient recovery and high-value utilization of keratin from waste human hair are of significant interest for sustainable materials development. However, the densely cross-linked disulfide bonds and extensive hydrogen-bond network of keratin make its mild and efficient extraction challenging. In this work, a redox-active deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of L-cysteine (L-Cys) and monoethanolamine (MEA) was developed for keratin recovery from waste human hair. Under optimized conditions of 80 °C, 3.5 h, and 10 wt% solid loading, the keratin recovery yield reached 96.5%, and the solvent maintained stable performance over five recycling cycles. Experimental results, together with DFT and MD simulations, indicate that the dissolution process is driven by synergistic disulfide bond cleavage and disruption of the hydrogen-bond network, while the protein backbone remains largely intact. The recovered keratin was further phosphorylated and co-regenerated with cellulose to fabricate a phosphorylated keratin/cellulose composite membrane (P-KCM). The membrane exhibited efficient and selective Fe 3+ adsorption, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 297.8 mg·g −1 . FT-IR and XPS analyses reveal that phosphate groups serve as the primary coordination sites for Fe 3+ . In tests with real LiFePO₄ leachate, P-KCM removed 97.3% of Fe 3+ while leaving 80.1% of Li + in solution, and it retained 84.7% of its initial adsorption capacity after four adsorption-desorption cycles. This work provides a mild, efficient, and recyclable strategy for keratin valorization and offers a feasible approach for selective metal ion separation and pre-treatment in battery recycling.

In order to achieve rapid and qualitative detection of soluble heavy metal ions, nitrogen-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) were synthesized using chitin extracted from shrimp and crab shells as the carbon source. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the synthesized N-CQDs were systematically characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The resulting N-CQDs exhibited a carbonization yield of 54.46% and a fluorescence quantum yield of 34.33%. Their morphology, structure and optical properties were thoroughly characterized using a range of analytical techniques. The synthesized N-CQDs exhibited excellent fluorescence properties, and remarkable stability. When applied for metal ion detection, the N-CQDs displayed a distinct and selective fluorescence quenching response exclusively toward Fe3+ions. The detection limit for Fe3+at room temperature was 4.04 μmol/L. Furthermore, due to the inherent nitrogen present in the acetyl amino groups of chitin, nitrogen doping was achieved without the need for external dopants during the hydrothermal synthesis process. Owing to their high stability, low cost and low toxicity, the N-CQDs synthesized in this study provide a promising fluorescence sensing platform with excellent selectivity for Fe3+detection, achieved through precise control of surface functional groups.

Inspired by the hierarchical structures of biological systems and interfacial engineering principles, this study focuses on developing sustainable biobased flame retardants to address rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF)’s intrinsic flammability and poor thermal stability. A hierarchical cellulose nanofibril/polydopamine/Fe3+ aerogel coating was fabricated on RPUF via vacuum freeze-drying, and its effects on RPUF’s thermal stability, flame retardancy, and char-forming behavior were systematically investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis showed the coating significantly improved RPUF’s thermal stability, with char residue at 800 °C increasing by 122% compared with the uncoated sample. The coated RPUF achieved a limiting oxygen index of 60 vol %, indicating greatly enhanced flame retardancy. Cone calorimeter tests confirmed the coating prolonged ignition time, reduced peak heat release rate and total heat release, increased fire performance index, and decreased fire growth index, exhibiting excellent fire protection efficiency. Its good flame retardancy stems from the superior gas–solid synergistic effect: a dense, highly graphitized char layer forms on RPUF composite during combustion to act as a protective barrier, and nonflammable gas dilutes combustibles via condensed-gas phase synergy. This work provides theoretical and experimental support for biobased aerogel flame-retardant design and holds potential in construction fire protection.

Transition metals such as Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ are essential for fundamental biological processes, yet their excess can trigger diverse symptoms and diseases. Therefore, precise detection of Fe 3+ /Cu 2+ via real-time and visual analytical techniques is urgently required. In this work, cellulose-based fluorescent material was designed via Steglich esterification by grafting perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) onto cellulose acetate (CA) backbone. The resulting materials (CA-PTCA) exhibited bright yellow fluorescence, which was quenched in the presence of Fe 3+ /Cu 2+ , providing a highly sensitive detection platform. The fluorescence quenching by Fe 3+ occurs via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism with CA-PTCA, while that by Cu 2+ proceeds through coordination. Moreover, the excellent processability of the CA backbone enables CA-PTCA to be fabricated into diverse material forms, including inks, coatings, films, aerogels, and fibers, all of which retain outstanding fluorescence properties. This work highlights the potential of cellulose-based fluorescent materials for multifunctional applications in sensing and information encryption.

Supported palladium (Pd) catalysts are known for their exceptional catalytic activity in methane combustion; however, they often undergo rapid deactivation due to sintering under practical reaction conditions. This study aims to develop highly active and stable catalysts for CH 4 combustion by investigating the effect of guest elements within silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite as supports for Pd. Various transition metals (TMs) were introduced into the S-1 gel to modify its structural properties. The TMs were incorporated into both framework and extra-framework positions, as demonstrated for iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti), resulting in the formation of FeS-1 and TS-1, respectively. The structures were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and ultraviolet-visible diffused reflectance (UV-vis DR) spectroscopy. Following Pd impregnation, the resulting Pd/FeS-1 and Pd/TS-1 exhibited high activity in CH 4 combustion. Compared to 1Pd/S-1, both 1Pd/FeS-1 and 1Pd/TS-1 achieved excellent low-temperature catalytic performance (T 90 < 400 °C), along with high reaction rates, turnover frequency (TOF) and stability. Characterization of the catalysts confirms the stabilizing effects of Fe and Ti on Pd species, primarily attributed to the formation of PdO x nanoclusters. Fe 3+ maintained PdO x in a more oxidized state, facilitated the activation of gas-phase oxygen, and provided anchoring sites for CH 4 activation into CH 3 ∗ , which combined with activated oxygen species. The reaction follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism, in which both CH 4 and oxygen are first adsorbed on the catalyst surface. Adsorbed and activated CH 4 species are sequentially oxidized by active oxygen species, leading to the formation of chemisorbed CO species, which are transformed into CO 2 and H 2 O as the final products.

Novel red carbon nanodots (R-CDs) have been specifically constructed and employed as an innovative fluorescent “turn-on” probe enabling sensitive detection of Fe 3+ ions. Novel R-CDs with a 70% yield were produced through a hydrothermal approach using erythromycin and L-isoleucine as precursor materials. The resultant R-CDs exhibit a rich functional groups, excellent water solubility, minimal cytotoxicity, remarkable fluorescence stability, and favorable biocompatibility. Remarkably, the R-CDs demonstrated a remarkable increase in fluorescence intensity following the addition of Fe 3+ which can be attributed to the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) enhancement mechanism. The linear range of Fe 3+ detected by R-CDs is 2.1–37.5 μM, with a detection limit of 0.17 ± 0.02 μM. This approach has also been effectively utilized for the precise analysis of actual samples. Furthermore, R-CDs demonstrate applicability in multicolor cellular imaging and the detection of intracellular Fe 3+ . The findings indicate that the obtained R-CDs exhibit considerable application prospects in sensing and biomedical domains.

Fe 3+ activator is a NIR candidate due to its non-toxicity and low cost. Herein, a NIR phosphor BaZnAl 10 O 17 : Fe 3+ (BZA: Fe 3+ ) with high external quantum efficiency (EQE = 54.1 %) and excellent thermal stability is synthesized. Various emission spectra can be observed under three different excitation wavelengths, which is attributed to the occupation of Fe 3+ on two octahedral sites and a tetrahedral site. The anti-thermal quenching phenomenon under the excitation wavelength of 340 nm can be attributed to trap-assisted energy compensation, weak electron-phonon coupling and energy transfer between different Fe 3+ sites. These sparkling properties indicate application potential in the field of plant lighting.

In the realm of food quality and safety monitoring, traditional on-site detection methods have faced challenges. Conventional sensors often lack the ability to provide rapid and accurate results, with limited sensitivity and selectivity. They are also bulky, making them inconvenient for portable applications. To address these limitations, we developed a smart sensing platform using 3D printing. By incorporating a fluorescent hydrogel of poly(9-aminofluorene) (P9AF) and sodium alginate (SA) as the cross-linking substrate, the platform’s P9AF-SA film has a porous network. This structure offers enhanced ion transport channels and active sites, enabling rapid and selective detection of Fe 3+ ions among numerous anions and cations. A 3D printed smartphone-based readout device further enables portable detection. Our platform achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 67.47 μg/L, far below the WHO safety threshold, and was successfully applied to agricultural products. This study not only provides a novel on-site detection device but also paves the way for developing highly efficient portable sensors, significantly advancing the field.
