Exploring the photoelectrocatalytic performance of spinel- and delafossite-like CuMM’O4 (M, M’ = Al, Ga, In) obtained from pseudobinary CuMO2-based solid solution

Bao-Feng Shan,Zhong Yang,Zong-Yan Zhao,Jin Zhang,Qing-Ju Liu

In this study, the focus revolves around the synthesis, characterization, and subsequent evaluation of CuMM’O 4 (M, M’ = Al, Ga, In) photoelectrocatalysts, notable for their distinct spinel- and delafossite-like structures. These novel materials are derived from a pseudobinary CuMO 2 -based solid solution. Specifically, the delafossite-like CuAlInO 4 and CuGaInO 4 manifest a trigonal superstructure within the R 3 ‾ m R3‾m space group, defined by structural motifs comprising [InO 6 ] octahedra, [CuO 5 ] hexahedra, and [AlO 5 ] or [GaO 5 ] hexahedra. This study spans a comprehensive analysis encompassing optical properties, electrical characteristics, electronic structure, and the ensuing photoelectrochemical performancer. This exploration integrates experimental analyses and density functional theory calculations to discern the intricacies of these materials. The assessed CuMM’O 4 samples display favorable optical traits and band-edge positions conducive to facilitating visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical water-splitting. Among the evaluated samples, the delafossite-like CuGaInO 4 photocathode stands out due to its notably elevated carrier density and reduced resistance for carrier transport, distinguishing it from CuAlGaO 4 and CuAlInO 4 . Consequently, it exhibits superior photoelectrochemical activity. CuGaInO 4 , serving as an unadorned photocathode, demonstrates a noteworthy photocurrent density of 8.6 μA/cm 2 under 0.61V RHE and 102.05 μA/cm 2 at 0.15 V RHE . Moreover, it achieves a peak incident photon-to-current efficiency of approximately 1.86 % at 0.61 V RHE under a 480 nm wavelength.

Eco-Friendly Zn–Ag–In–Ga–S Quantum Dots: Amorphous Indium Sulfide Passivated Silver/Sulfur Vacancies Achieving Efficient Red Light-Emitting Diodes

Shuai Zhang,Linxiang Yang,Gaoyu Liu,Shengli Zhang,Qingsong Shan,Haibo Zeng

I–III–VI quantum dots (QDs) and derivatives (I, III, and VI are Ag+/Cu+, Ga3+/In3+, and S2–/Se2–, respectively) are the ideal candidates to replace II–VI (e.g., CdSe) and perovskite QDs due to their nontoxicity, pure color, high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and full visible coverage. However, the chaotic cation alignment in multielement systems can easily lead to the formation of multiple surface vacancies, highlighted as VI and VVI, leading to nonradiative recombination and nonequilibrium carrier distribution, which severely limit the performance improvement of materials and devices. Here, based on Zn–Ag–In–Ga–S QDs, we construct an ultrathin indium sulfide shell that can passivate electron vacancies and convert donor/acceptor level concentrations. The optimized In-rich 2-layer indium sulfide structure not only enhances the radiative recombination rate by preventing further VS formation but also achieves the typical DAP emission enhancement, achieving a significant increase in PLQY to 86.2% at 628 nm. Moreover, the optimized structure can mitigate the lattice distortion and make the carrier distribution in the interior of the QDs more balanced. On this basis, red QD light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) with the highest external quantum efficiency (EQE; 5.32%) to date were obtained, providing a novel scheme for improving I–III–VI QD-based QLED efficiency.

Na6Zn3MIII2Q9 (MIII = Ga, In; Q = S, Se): four new supertetrahedron-layered chalcogenides with unprecedented vertex-sharing T3-clusters and desirable photoluminescence performances

Ailijiang Abudurusuli,Kui Wu,Yilimiranmu Rouzhahong,Zhihua Yang,Shilie Pan

Four new quaternary chalcogenides with the formula of Na6Zn3MIII2Q9 (MIII = Ga, In; Q = S, Se) have been successfully synthesized for the first time. They are isostructural and crystallize in the monoclinic C2/c space group. As seen from their structures, they exhibit two opposite direction layers composed of the interconnection of countless (Zn/MIII)10Q20 supertetrahedra (T3-type) clusters, and then three coordination-type NaQn units (n = 4–6) exist among the interlayers to bridge them together. Note that these T3 clusters connect with each other by vertex-sharing to form the layers in the title compounds, which can be viewed as the first discovered examples in the known quaternary chalcogenides that only exhibit the tetrahedron-sharing T3 clusters. Moreover, we have also systematically compared the structural differences of all the T3-containing quaternary chalcogenides and the result shows that the title compounds possess the shortest interlayer spacing and more tilting T3 cluster-built layers in comparison with other related compounds. The measured optical properties indicate that their optical bandgaps are in the range from 2.22 to 3.15 eV, respectively. The photoluminescence result shows that the title compounds have potential application prospects as blue and green light emitters in view of their obvious emission peaks centered at 463 and 541 nm. Electronic structures and density of states were also calculated by first-principles calculations and the results indicate that their optical bandgaps are mainly determined by the T3 clusters.

Mid-infrared emissions of Dy3+ doped Ga-As-S chalcogenide glasses and fibers and their potential for a 4.2 μm fiber laser

Jian Cui,Xusheng Xiao,Yantao Xu,Xiaoxia Cui,Meiling Chen,Junjiang Guo,Min Lu,Bo Peng,Haitao Guo

For developing an ideal efficient and low-threshold medium for fiber lasers operated at 4 μm wavebands, 0.05 wt.% to 0.5 wt.% Dy3+ ions doped Ga0.8As39.2S60 chalcogenide glasses were investigated and a 4.2 μm fiber laser was theoretically studied based on the rate and propagation equations. It was shown that the Ga0.8As39.2S60 glass shows a desirable large Dy3+ ion solubility, which has been increased by an order of magnitude compared to As2S3 glass. Dy-rich nanocrystallines were found when the Dy3+ ions’ concentration is more than 0.3wt.% (i.e. 3000 ppmw), and the concentration quenching was found based on spectral analysis; however, no rapid decreases in lifetimes were observed. 0.3wt.% Dy3+ doped Ga0.8As39.2S60 glass possesses relatively large laser quality factor σemi × τmea = 1.70 × 10−23 cm2·s and excellent thermal stability (ΔT = 182°C), which can be successfully drawn into fibers indicating good potential for mid-infrared fiber laser.

Mixture of Nonionic/Ionic Surfactants for the Formulation of Nanostructured Lipid Carriers: Effects on Physical Properties

Shuangni Zhao,Xiaomin Yang,Vasil M. Garamus,Ulrich A. Handge,Luthringer Bérengère,Lin Zhao,Gabriele Salamon,Regine Willumeit,Aihua Zou,Saijun Fan

The objective of the present work was to investigate the effects of the mixture of nonionic/ionic surfactants on nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). Nonionic surfactant (polyethylene–poly(propylene glycol), Pluronic F68) and ionic surfactant (octenylsuccinic acid modified gum arabic, GA-OSA) were chosen as emulsifier for NLCs. The NLCs systems, which were composed of lipid matrix, modified 4-dedimethylaminosancycline (CMT-8), and various emulsifier agents, were characterized with dynamic light scattering (DLS), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), in vitro release, and phagocytosis assay. This mixture of nonionic/ionic surfactants showed significant effects on physical properties including particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), entrapment efficiency, and particle morphology. Compared with single stabilizer, this mixed nonionic/ionic surfactant system provided NLCs with better drug carrier properties including prolonged release profile and low phagocytosis by phagocyte. We expect that these explorations can provide a new strategy for the development of lipid nanoparticles as drug delivery.

Green Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction of Flavonoids from Scutellariae Radix Using Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Hybrid BBD-ANN-GA Optimization Strategy and Mechanistic Insights

Qiuyue Hu,Ruochen Qi,Xindi Feng,Dian Jin,Li Sun,Zuoxiang Zeng,Feng Liang,Zhongli Xiong,Zhen Liu

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as promising green alternatives to conventional organic solvents for the sustainable extraction of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants. In this study, a DES-based extraction system enhanced by ultrasound was employed to extract flavonoids from Scutellariae Radix (SR). A hybrid optimization strategy integrating Box-Behnken design (BBD), artificial neural network (ANN) modeling, and genetic algorithm (GA) was utilized to maximize the extraction efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, the predicted yield of flavonoids reached 194.58 mg/g, which was in close agreement the experimental value (194.03 mg/g). The purified DES extracts exhibited strong antioxidant activity. After five consecutive extraction cycles, the DES maintained its structure stability and retained a high extraction yield with only a 11.39% decrease. The characterization of the solid extraction residue indicated the microstructure of SR was disrupted by the DES, facilitating the release of flavonoids. In addition, mechanistic studies based on quantum chemical calculations revealed strong hydrogen bonding and orbital interactions between the DES and flavonoids as key contributors to the extraction process. These results demonstrate the potential of DESs as tunable and reusable media for the efficient extraction of natural products, supported by both experimental data and molecular-level insights.

Stable Interface between a NaCl–AlCl3 Melt and a Liquid Ga Negative Electrode for a Long-Life Stationary Al-Ion Energy Storage Battery

Junxiang Wang,Handong Jiao,Wei-Li Song,Mingyong Wang,Jiguo Tu,Zhongfeng Tang,Hongmin Zhu

Intermediate temperature NaCl–AlCl3-based Al-ion batteries are considered as a promising stationary energy storage system due to their low cost, high safety, etc. However, such a cheap electrolyte has a critical feature, i.e., strong corrosion, which results in the short cycle life of the conventional Al-metal anode and also limits the development of the NaCl–AlCl3-based Al-ion batteries. A noncorrosive electrolyte may be a good choice for addressing the above challenge, while it is difficult to obtain the electrolyte that has advantages of both noncorrosion and low cost. Therefore, here, we report a Ga-metal anode in the affordable NaCl–AlCl3 electrolyte for constructing a long-life stationary Al-ion energy storage system. This featured liquid metal anode shows good alloying and dealloying processes between metallic Ga and Al, as well as renders superior stability of the interface between the electrolyte and the anode (e.g., smoothly running for over 580 h at 2 mA cm–2). No-corrosion and no-pulverization problems appear in this novel liquid/liquid interface. Those advantages demonstrate that the liquid Ga-metal anode has a great promise for the improvement of the NaCl–AlCl3-based Al-ion batteries for large-scale stationary energy storage applications.

A multifunctional self-initiated photo-crosslinking insect chitosan hydrogel loaded with ZIF-8@Ga-EGCG for promoting healing of MRSA-infected diabetic wounds

Xiaoli Pan,Qing Li,Ying Wang,Yingxi Li,Shuang Liu,Yun Duan,Huacheng Tang,Xiao Zhou,Xiaomin Lai,Fuchen Jiang,Zhen Huang,Xuebo Li,Jun Lu

Diabetic wounds represent one of the most prevalent complications in patients with diabetes mellitus. Elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), bacterial infections, persistent inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis collectively contribute to delayed diabetic wound healing. In this study, a multifunctional, injectable, photoinitiator-free, photocrosslinkable hydrogel (G/Z@M) based on insect-derived chitosan was developed. The hydrogel system incorporated lipoic acid (LA), which possesses photopolymerization capability and potent antioxidant activity, to modify quaternized chitosan (QMCS). Through self-initiated photo-crosslinking of QMCS-LA, the hydrogel's three-dimensional network was constructed. Simultaneously, the ZIF-8@MPN nanocomposite was constructed by coating ZIF-8 with a metal-polyphenol network (MPN) functional coating formed through the coordination of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) with Ga 3+ . This nanocomposite was then loaded onto the QMCS-LA network. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the G/Z@M hydrogel possesses great biocompatibility, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and pro-angiogenic activities, effectively promoting the healing of full-thickness skin defect wounds in MRSA-infected diabetic rats. In conclusion, the G/Z@M hydrogel presents an innovative therapeutic approach for diabetic infected wounds by simultaneously regulating oxidative stress, bacterial infection, persistent inflammation, and impaired angiogenesis.

Separation and cyclic enrichment of valuable elements (Ga, Ge, In) from Zn vacuum smelting slag by stepwise leaching with sulfuric and acetic acid

Huazhen Cao,Canjiang Li,Junfeng Kong,Lining Yu,Anyang Tang,Jingnan Zheng,Zhengzheng Liu,Huibin Zhang,Guoqu Zheng

Zinc vacuum smelting slag contains valuable metals, including gallium (Ga), germanium (Ge), and indium (In). However, their highly dispersed distribution presents significant challenges for efficient recovery. This study developed a sustainable stepwise leaching strategy, combining sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) leaching with acetic acid (HAc) leaching, for the efficient recovery of Ga, Ge, and In from refractory zinc vacuum smelting slag. The complex occurrence states of Ga, Ge, and In in the slag and their transformation behaviors during leaching behaviors were systematically investigated. During H 2 SO 4 leaching, zinc (Zn) recovery reached up to 96.3% under optimal conditions, while the valuable metals (Ga, Ge, and In) became enriched in the H 2 SO 4 post-leach residues. The enrichment mechanism of Ga, Ge, and In in the post-leach residues was elucidated and found to involve hydrolysis and replacement processes. Subsequently, the H 2 SO 4 post-leach residues were treated with HAc to recover Ga, Ge, and In, achieving recoveries of 83.3%, 91.2%, and 91.4%, respectively. Through a cyclic leaching process (five cycles), the concentrations of Ga, Ge, and In in solution were increased to 0.72 g/L, 5.14 g/L, and 2.71 g/L, respectively. This green and efficient process offers a technically feasible and environmentally benign strategy for recovering valuable metals from secondary resources, thereby promoting resource circularity and waste valorization in the zinc industry.

Zn2+- and Mn4+-Codoped K2LiB1–xB′xF6 (B, B′ = Al, Ga, In) Fluorescent Nanoparticles: Implications for Micro-LED Color Conversion and Anticounterfeiting Inks

Yuhuan Tan,Yiran Yang,Shiyan Li,Zixiong Yao,Shixun Lian,Pengyan Fu,Wenli Zhou

To address issues such as uneven particle size, agglomeration, low luminescence efficiency, and poor stability in the nanosizing of Mn4+-doped fluoride red phosphors, this study combines solid solution engineering and aliovalent charge compensation to prepare high-performance K2LiB1–xB′xF6:Mn4+ (B, B′ = Al, Ga, In) nanoparticles (FNPs). Using an HF-free coprecipitation method for the synthesis of solid-solution matrices, followed by a ligand-assisted reprecipitation step that employs a small amount of HF to dissolve K2MnF6 to rapidly and uniformly incorporate Mn4+ into the matrices, and the particle size is reduced from 33.32 to 16.05 nm with improved dispersibility by adjusting the volume ratio of oleic acid (OA) to oleylamine (OAm) ligands; through the gradual solid solution of Al3+, Ga3+, and In3+, the regulatory mechanism of lattice distortion and local crystal field on luminescence is revealed, with optimal luminescence intensity achieved at specific solid-solution ratios and the emission peak blue-shifted from 636 to 632 nm. Zn2+ codoping for charge compensation enhances the luminescence intensity of the 0.9% Mn4+-doped sample by 120%, with the internal quantum efficiency (IQE) increased to 40.01%, and the fluorescence lifetime extended to 4.11 ms. The FNPs have good thermal stability (56% retention at 150 °C) and moisture resistance (85% retention after 240 h in water). Packaged white light-emitting diode (WLED) exhibits a luminous efficacy of 20.54 lm W–1, and the fluorescent ink enables red–green anticounterfeiting display under UV excitation, providing insights into applications in high-end display and lighting fields, especially micro-LED color conversion layers, WLED packaging, and anticounterfeiting/encryption inks.

Suppression of the Coffee-Ring Effect for OMVs Distribution of TEM Sampling via GA-Induced Marangoni Flow and Inhibition of Radially Capillary Flow

Maobin Xie,Dingshan Zhang,Jiayu Liu,Yao Jiang,Jin Bai,Hai Qiao

The aggregation of suspended particles caused by the coffee-ring effect (CRE) disrupts uniform distribution and limits accurate transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation. Here, we show that glutaraldehyde (GA) suppresses CRE in aqueous polystyrene microsphere droplets and enables more uniform outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) deposition for TEM. Specifically, the addition of GA (0%–15% v/v) to 1% w/v, 1 µm red polystyrene microsphere suspensions progressively reduced ring formation: The ratio of maximum-to-minimum gray values decreased from 2.40 ± 0.22 (0% GA) to 1.11 ± 0.06 (15% GA), and mean CRE width dropped from ∼97 to ∼3.2 µm. Microsphere radial velocity decreased from 4.25 ± 0.37 (0% GA) to 0.89 ± 0.08 µm/s (15% GA), whereas bulk solution viscosity increased concomitantly (from ∼4 to ∼232 mPa s at 15% GA), indicating viscosity-mediated suppression of radial capillary flow. Addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) partly restored CRE, consistent with reduction of surface-tension gradients that drive Marangoni reflux. Applying GA (6% v/v) to OMVs TEM preparation produced homogeneous OMVs counts across center, middle, and edge regions, without observable morphological alteration. We conclude that GA suppresses CRE primarily by (i) increasing viscosity to inhibit radial capillary flow and (ii) establishing surface-tension-driven Marangoni backflow that redistributes particles away from the contact line. GA thus provides a practical, fixation-compatible approach to improve TEM sample uniformity for biological nanoassemblies.

New insight into adsorption and co-adsorption of chlortetracycline hydrochloride and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride by Ga-based metal-organic gel/sodium alginate composite beads

Junhong Gu,Zhi Liu,Aiyuan Jia,Yiqi Wang,Ningning Li,Zhisheng Liu,Yangxue Li,Hongxing Zhang

Due to the extensive usage of tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones for disease control, their residuals usually coexist in wastewater and seriously affect human health and the entire ecosystem. To mitigate this problem, developing efficient and recyclable absorbent has been urgently required to be put on the agenda. In this research, Ga-based MOGs (GMOGs) were synthesized to remove chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) and ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP) in aqueous solution, followed by incorporating GMOGs into low-cost sodium alginate (SA) matrix to gain GMOG/SA beads with enhanced adsorption property, fine recycling performance and stable reusability. In single system (S-system), the adsorption behaviors of CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads including key operating factors, kinetics, isotherms and practicability were investigated systematically, and the maximum adsorption capacities for CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads achieved 406.50/158.23 mg g −1 and 1085.19/862.07 mg g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, the proposed adsorption mechanisms were discussed. In binary system (B-system), regardless of suppressed co-adsorption behaviors of CTC/CIP by GMOGs and GMOG/SA beads arising from the competitive effect between CTC and CIP, their adsorption capacities still reached 207.90/126.90 mg g −1 and 588.24/571.42 mg g −1 , respectively. Moreover, the value of industrial application was evaluated by testing the adsorption performance of GMOG/SA beads in bead columns and real water. This work provides a potential practicable, effective and recycled exploration of GMOG/SA beads for remediating the CTC and CIP co-contaminated wastewater.
