In this research, porous molecularly imprinted polymers (PMIPs) with thin wall were prepared using halloysite nanotube (HNT) hard template, which has a unique hollow tubular structure, for selective recognition and removal of the chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic frequently detected in water environment. PMIPs had the good porous structure replicated from the HNT template. The adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, selectivity and regeneration properties of CAP by PMIPs were systematically studied by static adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of PMIPs toward CAP increased from 91.26 μmol g −1 at 25 °C to 102.5 μmol g −1 45 °C. The adsorption was in accordance with Freundlich isothermal model, indicating the multi-molecular layer adsorption. The adsorption could reach equilibrium basically within 80 min with a quick kinetic property and was confirmed by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating the chemical adsorption was rate-controlling step. The high contact temperature was beneficial to the CAP adsorption, thus which was belonged to the endothermic process. Importantly, adsorption selectivity experiments showed PMIPs had the high recognition ability for template molecule CAP whether in one- or two- component antibiotic solutions. Besides, PMIPs exhibited good thermal and chemical stability and reproducibility for practical application in further.

Heavy metals such as Pb(II) pollutions in wastewater have been a serious environmental problem. In this study, we loaded polyamide–amine (PAMAM) on the surface of magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) via one-step thiol–yne click chemistry to obtain dendritic magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs-PAMAM) with high-density amine groups for the highly efficient adsorption of Pb(II). The synthesized MHNTs-PAMAM were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), which confirmed the formed nanostructures and chemical features of MHNTs-PAMAM. And batch adsorption experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of pH and other variables on the adsorption amount. Here, TGA shows that PAMAM grafting on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) achieves a sufficiently high graft ratio of 6.1 wt %, which ensures sufficient active adsorption sites on the surface of the composite. With the increase of the grafted PAMAM generation, the functional group density and adsorption capacity of the material also gradually increased, and the maximum adsorption capacity of the material for Pb(II) was up to 194.4 mg g–1. The adsorption kinetics agrees well with the pseudo-second-order equations, and the equilibrium data can be described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.940).

In view of the low fluidity caused by the high viscosity of viscous oil, a rational construction of emulsifiers with in situ heating function is highly desirable to power a high-viscosity oil emulsification process. Herein, we demonstrate a novel composite phase change material (PCM) with the dual functions of photothermal and magnetic-thermal conversion to realize the efficient Pickering emulsification of viscous oil. The superior photo/magnetic-thermal response characteristics together with its excellent energy storage and heat release properties endow the designed composite PCM with a good viscosity reduction capacity, thus greatly promoting the emulsification of viscous oil. Owing to the polydopamine (PDA) and Fe3O4 coating, the temperature of functionalized composite PCMs could rapidly reach 80.9 °C and 68.5 °C under simulated sunlight illumination and an alternating magnetic field, respectively. The viscosity of crude oil can be significantly reduced when it comes into contact with heated materials. Most importantly, due to the encapsulation of PEG, the slow release of the stored heat ensured a sustained reduction in the viscosity of the oil over a considerable period of time and greatly improved the energy utilization efficiency simultaneously. Overall, the rationally designed multifunctional composite PCM with both in situ heating characteristics and Pickering emulsification properties provides a new solution for the emulsification of high-viscosity oil.

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) have been studied and applied in the field of flame retardant. It is still a challenge to realize a facial method to accommodate more flame retardants while expanding the inner lumen of HNTs simultaneously. In this work, the inner cavity expansion and the encapsulation of aluminum hypophosphite of HNTs is obtained (AHP@HNTs) by a simple one-pot synthesis. The prepared AHP@HNTs were applied to the flame retarded Epoxy resin (EP) and the results show that AHP@HNTs can achieve better flame retardant effect at a lower addition (3 %) than individual additions of AHP or HNTs at higher addition (5 %) manifested by the reduction of the heat and smoke release. The decrease of effective heat combustion (EHC) reveals a gaseous phase flame retardant mechanism. Moreover, the environmental pollution after combustion was evaluated by an innovative method based on the particulate collection from smoke. The reduction of particulate formation and the improvement of char residue confirms the condensed flame retardant mechanism of AHP@HNTs on EP.

The corrosion resistance of the waterborne epoxy coating is poor during long-term service, which greatly limits its widespread application. In this paper, the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified by polyaniline (PANI) and then used as nanocontainers to encapsulate the green corrosion inhibitor praseodymium (III) cations (Pr3+), obtaining HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles. A scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis were applied to characterize the formation of PANI and the absorption of Pr3+ cations. The corrosion-inhibiting ability of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles for iron sheets and the anticorrosion properties of the nanocomposite coatings were evaluated by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The results indicated that the coating containing HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ nanoparticles exhibited excellent anticorrosion performance. After immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 50 days, its Zf=0.01 Hz value was still as high as 9.4 × 108 Ω cm2. The icorr value was 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the pure WEP coating. The excellent anticorrosion property of the HNTs@PANI@Pr3+ coating could be attributed to the synergy of three beneficial factors, including evenly distributed nanoparticles, PANI, and Pr3+ cations. This research will provide theoretical and technical support for the development of waterborne coatings with high corrosion resistance.

Developing low-cost composite phase change materials with good shape stability, excellent mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity, large encapsulation ratio, strong light absorption and eminent solar-to-thermal conversion capacity is of great challenge to solve the scaling-up related issues of organic solid–liquid phase change materials during the utilization of solar energy. In this work, halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol) and halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide aerogels with rich three-dimensional honeycomb structure were prepared by a freezing and freeze-drying method, which can significantly promote the encapsulation ratio of lauric acid in the pores of both aerogels and halloysite nanotube. Halloysite nanotube with high aspect ratio can improve the compressive strength of the aerogels and shape stability of the composite phase change materials, while reduced graphene oxide can reinforce the thermal conductivity and light absorption ability. After encapsulation of lauric acid, the halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol) 9:1 and halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide 9:1 phase change composites demonstrate extraordinarily high latent heat of 195.4 J/g and 197.0 J/g, respectively, leading to high encapsulation ratios of 97.2 % and 98.1 % respectively, accompanied by good chemical and thermal stability over 300 thermal cycles. The thermal conductivity of lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide is remarkably elevated to 0.343 W/m∙K, exceeding 39.4 % that of pure lauric acid (0.246 W/m∙K). Besides, the lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide realizes a conspicuous solar-to-thermal conversion with solar absorption capacity of 95 % throughout the full spectrum of solar light. The marvelous improvement in the solar-to-thermal conversion efficiency can be attributed to thermally conductive interconnected network of halloysite nanotube and reduced graphene oxide. Thus, lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide and lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol) are tentatively used in the catalytic hydrolysis of ammonia borane, and they can efficiently harvest, convert and store solar energy in the form of thermal energy and release it for the reaction, which obviously accelerates the extent of reaction with turnover frequency increasing from 29.50 ( m o l H 2 / m o l c a t a l y s t · m i n ) at 25 °C to 59.18 and 41.74 ( m o l H 2 / m o l c a t a l y s t · m i n ) under the heating of solar energy stored lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol)/reduced graphene oxide and lauric acid@halloysite/poly(vinyl alcohol), respectively. This work paves a way for fabricating halloysite-based aerogel and composite phase change materials for thermal/solar energy saving application.

The thermal safety of battery module is demonstrated as the main bottleneck to hinder wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). It is vital to explore efficient thermal management system to satisfy the rapidly increasing need for EVs. Composite change materials (CPCMs) as passive cooling system has greatly potential application in battery packs. However, the inherent leakage and low thermal conductivity are restricted its widely utilized in practical applications. In this study, the high thermal conductivity CPCM with PEG/EG/HNT@AP has successfully prepared through a synergistic method of in situ chemical reduction and physical blending technology. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) as the phase change matrix and halloysite nanotube (HNT) as the support material can provide cross-linked network to prevent its leakage. Especially, the expanded graphite (EG) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) assembled into HNT (HNT@AP) play a synergistic role to construct an interconnected thermal network. The results indicates that the thermal conductivity is increased to 1.15 W·m −1 ·K −1 and the latent heat of phase change can maintain to 103.65 J·g −1 , when the content of HNT@AP is 40 %. In addition, the battery module with PEG/EG/HNT@AP and PEG/EG/ER are designed and measured during charge and discharge cycling process, respectively. It reveals that battery module with PEG/EG/HNT@AP can exhibit excellent thermal management effect, which temperature was controlled below 60 °C at 3C discharge rate even under 35 °C ambient temperature. Therefore, this work sheds light on rational design of high thermal conductive composite material to improve thermal safety of battery pack in the EVs.

The application of amorphous ferrihydrite (Fh) for Cd(II) removal is restricted by its unstable and easily transformable nature. Although doping with silicates stabilized ferrihydrite, its product siliceous ferrihydrite (SiFh) again suffered from the disadvantage of spontaneous agglomeration. Herein, ferrihydrite was hybridized with halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) to prepare a novel siliceous ferrihydrite − coated halloysite nanorods (SiFh@HNTs) in alkaline medium, to break through the current barriers. The characterization results showed that SiFh@HNTs could simultaneously overcome the defects of easy phase transformation of ferrihydrite and easy aggregation of SiFh nanoparticles (NPs). Meanwhile, the optimal SiFh@HNT 40 with halloysite content of 40 % formed a well-developed mesoporous structure and exhibited the desired surface properties: a high specific surface area of 303.4 m 2 /g, an isoelectric point as low as pH iep = 4.5, and rich functional Fe − OH groups. The formation mechanism of such excellent sturcture–properties of SiFh@HNT 40 were mainly attributed to two factors: the generation of smaller (∼5 nm) SiFh NPs induced by the integration of halloysite-derived SiO 4 4- into ferrihydrite, and the dispersion of SiFh NPs on clay nanotubes. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of SiFh@HNT 40 for Cd(II) was up to 137.8 mg/g at 30 °C and pH 6, which was much higher than that of aggregated ferrihydrite (11.2 mg/g), halloysite (18.8 mg/g) and goethite (49.4 mg/g). The adsorption thermodynamics study revealed the adsorption of Cd(II) on SiFh@HNT 40 was clearly chemisorption with a (ΔH ads ) q of 43.3 kJ/mol. Characterization results of XPS and FTIR confirmed that the rich Fe − OH groups on SiFh@HNT 40 was the main adsorption sites, and Cd(II) was specifically adsorbed by inner-sphere surface complexation. In addition, SiFh@HNT 40 had application potential in the mixed-metal wastewaters treatment. Cyclic regeneration experiments showed that SiFh@HNT 40 had good regeneration performance and could be reused many times.

In recent years, owing to the unique properties such as high surface area and flexibility, graphene oxide (GO) has been extensively studied in the field of membrane preparation for wastewater treatment. However, GO-based membrane usually has a low water flux because of the narrow layer spacing between adjacent GO sheets. In this study, dopamine-modified halloysite nanotubes (D-HNTs) were used to increase the layer spacing of GO sheets, and then a series of novel D-HNTs/GO composite membranes were fabricated by vacuum filtration. The incorporation of D-HNTs could not only enhance the water flux of GO membrane significantly (from 9.6 to 218 L·m–2·h–1) but also improve the surface morphology and structure, which presented an underwater superoleophobic property. In addition, the wettability of membrane was further increased with the introduction of ethylenediamine in D-HNTs/GO membrane. More importantly, novel membranes were successfully applied for the simultaneous removal of oils and dyes from wastewater, which exhibited high water flux, good rejection ratio, and even superior anti-oil-fouling property. In summary, the novel GO-based composite membranes could have a bright application prospect for wastewater treatment.

A sensitive label-free amperometric electrochemical immunosensor for detection of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was proposed in this work. The nanocomposite of halloysite nanotubes with polypyrrole shell and palladium nanoparticles (HNTs@PPy-Pd) was used as a novel signal label. The HNTs with adequate hydroxyl groups are economically available raw materials. PPy, as an electrically conducting polymer material, can be absorbed to the surface of HNTs by in situ oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole monomer and form a shell on the HNTs. The shell of PPy could not only improve the conductivity of the nanocomposite but also absorb large amounts of Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The Pd NPs with high electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of H 2 O 2 and the HNTs@PPy-Pd nanocomposite as the analytical signal label could improve the sensitivity of the immunosensor. Under optimal conditions, the immunosensor showed a low detection limit (0.03 pg/mL) and a wide linear range (0.0001 to 25 ng/mL) of PSA. Moreover, its merits such as good selectivity, acceptable reproducibility, and stability indicate that the fabricated immunosensor has a promising application potential in clinical diagnosis.

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a crucial technology for achieving carbon reduction targets. The key to CCUS technology lies in developing and designing efficient and low-cost CO 2 capture materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising CO 2 adsorbents in the field of carbon capture. However, high agglomeration of nanoparticles and high cost have severely hindered the application of MOF-based solid adsorbents. This study employs an in-situ growth method to prepare a novel “corncob-shaped” PHNT@ZIF-8 composite material. During the reaction process, surface modification of halloysite nanotubes (HNT) enhances the interaction between HNT and ZIF-8. The resulting PHNT@ZIF-8 exhibits an enhanced CO 2 adsorption capacity of 1.48 mmol/g. Notably, the functionalized PHNT@ZIF-8 as CO 2 adsorbents demonstrated significant adsorption properties: a high specific surface area of 409.74 m 2 /g, good selectivity in simulated flue gas composition of 15%/85% (CO 2 /N 2 ) (39.1), excellent thermal stability, and superior regenerability. Moreover, PHNT@ZIF-8 adsorbs CO 2 primarily through van der Waals forces, which involve low energy and are easily reversible. After eight adsorption–desorption cycles, CO 2 capacity retention rate remains as high as 93% (1.37 mmol/g). This work enriches the repertoire of solid CO 2 composite adsorbents, providing a novel pathway for enhancing CO 2 adsorption performance.

Bipolar membranes (BPMs), composed of anion exchange membrane (AEM) and cation exchange membrane (CEM), hold promise for energy and environmental applications due to their ability to dissociate water into H + and OH − under reverse bias. However, their practical voltage requirements often exceed theoretical potentials, necessitating efficiency optimization. This study introduces an innovative BPM design integrating alginate (SA)-based CEM with chitosan AEM, enhanced by polydopamine-coated halloysite nanotubes (DHNTs) loaded with phosphotungstic acid (HPW). The tubular structure of the DHNTs, modified via dopamine polymerization, improved mechanical stability and proton conductivity, while HPW coating (optimized at 10 wt %) facilitated acid-base interactions, reducing proton hopping distances. Comprehensive characterization (SEM, FTIR, XPS, TGA) confirmed successful HPW coating and structural modification. The optimized BPM exhibited enhanced tensile strength than unmodified BPM with proton conductivity of 36.56 mS/cm and low water dissociation overpotential of 1.188 V at 70 mA/cm 2 . Electrodialysis tests revealed reduced interfacial resistance (IR drop) and increased stability over 48 h, attributed to HPW's catalytic role in accelerating ion transport and minimizing energy loss. The synergy between DHNTs and HPW significantly improved hydrophilicity, mechanical robustness, and energy efficiency, demonstrating the potential of this design for sustainable electrochemical systems. These findings provide critical insights into advanced BPM development for scalable energy and environmental technologies.
