Hydrogen (H2) has gradually become a substitute for traditional energy, but its potential danger cannot be ignored. In this study, litchi-like g-C3N4/In2O3composites were synthesized by a hydrothermal method and used to develop H2sensors. The morphology characteristics and chemical composition of the samples were characterized to analyze the gas-sensing properties. Meanwhile, a series of sensors were tested to evaluate the gas-sensing performance. Among these sensors, the sensor based on the 3 wt% g-C3N4/In2O3(the mass ratio of g-C3N4to In2O3is 3:100) showeds good response properties to H2, exhibiting fast response/recovery time and excellent selectivity to H2. The improvement in the gas-sensing performance may be related to the special morphology, the oxygen state and the g-C3N4/In2O3heterojunction. To sum up, a sensor based on 3 wt% g-C3N4/In2O3exhibits preeminent performance for H2with high sensitivity, fast response, and excellent selectivity.Keywords:g-C3N4/In2O3;litchi-like;H2sensor;fast response;high selectivity

Detecting trace ppb-level of formaldehyde (HCHO) in indoor ambient and human exhaled breath using metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensor has attracted increasing attention. Herein, Ag nanoparticles (Ag NP) modified In 2 O 3 and Au nanocage (Au NC) modified In 2 O 3 as well as bimetal Ag NP and Au NC co-modified In 2 O 3 were successfully prepared via one-step microwave-assisted solvothermal method and were used to construct semiconductor gas sensor. It is exciting to observe that the sensor based on Ag 6 Au 1 /In 2 O 3 exhibits the highest response of 277 toward 5 ppm HCHO at low operating temperature (170 °C), which is about 7 times, 38 times and 102 times higher than 6 wt. % Ag/In 2 O 3 , 1 wt. % Au/In 2 O 3 and pristine In 2 O 3 , respectively. Moreover, the selectivity and detection limit (down to 26 ppb) of Ag 6 Au 1 /In 2 O 3 sensor to HCHO have been proven to be greatly improved. This excellent sensing performance indicates that the proposed bimetal Ag and Au co-modification with synergistic catalysis effect offers an effective design for highly sensitive and efficient HCHO detection devices. Moreover, the mechanism of HCHO sensing with Au and Ag co-loaded In 2 O 3 was explored by the calculations obtained from first-principle density functional theory studies .

The In2O3 nanoparticles were homogeneously attached on the BiOBr nanoplate surface to obtain S-scheme In2O3/BiOBr heterojunction photocatalysts by a hydrothermal route. The purity, crystal structure, chemical state, morphology, light absorption property, and photogenerated charge behavior of composites were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, UV–vis DRS, PL, ESR, and electrochemical tests. The removal of dyes (acid orange 7 (AO7), acid orange 10 (AO10), and rhodamine B (RhB)) and Cr(VI) was employed to evaluate the photocatalytic performance of In2O3/BiOBr composites irradiated by simulated sunlight. The results indicate that the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr can be remarkably promoted after the decoration of In2O3 nanoparticles, and the best photocatalytic activity was achieved over an 8% In2O3/BiOBr sample. The 8% In2O3/BiOBr sample also indicates outstanding synergistic photocatalytic performance for the removal of the heavy metal ion/dye mixture (AO7/Cr(VI) and RhB/Cr(VI)). It is found that the decoration of In2O3 nanoparticles can accelerate the transfer and separation of photoinduced electrons and holes in BiOBr nanoplates. The energy band structure, work function, and Fermi level of BiOBr and In2O3 were computed through the density functional theory calculation. Based on the above investigation, the photocatalytic mechanism of the S-scheme In2O3/BiOBr composite was discussed.

Hydrogenation of CO 2 to methanol is an achievable way for “methanol economy” and “liquid sunshine” visions. Owing to highly tunable properties containing different morphologies, exposed crystal facets and oxygen vacancies , In 2 O 3 has become a promising material for CO 2 hydrogenation. Here we successfully introduced highly dispersed Pt 2+ species into three different morphologies In 2 O 3 supports by controllable precipitation method. The dominant exposed crystal facets of In 2 O 3 supports during the research are discovered to greatly affect the dispersion of active Pt 2+ species and the number of oxygen vacancies, as analyzed by diverse characterization techniques, and closely correlated with the catalytic performance. Compared with Pt/In 2 O 3 whcih mainly exposing (222) or (104) facet, Pt/In 2 O 3 which primarily exposed (211) facet obtained higher catalytic activity, including a CO 2 conversion of 11.7% and methanol selectivity of 74.8% with a space time yield of methanol of 0.63 g MeOH h −1 gcat −1 at 300 °C, 5 MPa, and 21,000 cm 3 h −1 g −1 . The highly enhanced activity of 1.5Pt/C-In 2 O 3 -S catalyst was ascribed to its more abundant oxygen vacancies and well-dispersed Pt 2+ species, which derived from the interaction between Pt 2+ and the underlying In 2 O 3 (211) facet. The special interface structure enabled the activation of CO 2 and hydrogenation of key intermediates effectively. Exposing the highly active crystal face of the In 2 O 3 supports is proved to be an effective strategy to enhance catalytic performance of Pt/In 2 O 3 catalyst for methanol synthesis .

The crystalline phases of support have great influence on their surface and structure properties. Therefore, adjusting the crystalline structure of heterogeneous catalysts imposes a significant impact on the catalytic performance. Herein, a suite of Pd/In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 catalysts with different crystalline phases of ZrO 2 were prepared and evaluated for CO 2 hydrogenation to CH 3 OH using the same amount of metal loading. The activity data showed the distinct superior reactivity of Pd/In 2 O 3 /ZrO 2 catalyst used mixed monoclinic and tetragonal phases ZrO 2 (Mix-ZrO 2 ) as support as compared to respective single phase of monoclinic ZrO 2 (m-ZrO 2 ) and tetragonal ZrO 2 (t-ZrO 2 ). The catalysts are extensively characterized through BET, XRD, HRTEM, UV–vis, H 2 -TPR, CO 2 /H 2 -TPD and XPS. Combining the characterization results and activity data, the superior activity of Pd/In 2 O 3 /Mix-ZrO 2 catalyst can be correlated with large particle size of Pd nanoparticles, the concentration of oxygen vacancies, and the abundant medium basic sites, which were essential for activation of H 2 and inert CO 2 and enhancement of catalytic performance. The best-performing Pd/In 2 O 3 /Mix-ZrO 2 catalyst exhibited a remarkable reactivity with space time yield (STY) of 0.54 g methanol ·h −1 ·g cat −1 at 573 K and 5 MPa, and stability without noticeable deactivation after 100 h of time on stream, demonstrating its potential as catalyst used in CH 3 OH synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation.

In this work, the kinetics and mechanisms of photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) by nitrogen-doped indium trioxide (N-doped In 2 O 3 or NH 4 NO 3 -In 2 O 3 ) under Xe lamp irradiation were systematically investigated. Nitrogen originating from various inorganic and organic nitrogen compounds was doped into In 2 O 3 to examine the catalytic effect. The NH 4 NO 3 -In 2 O 3 catalyst was characterized by SEM , TEM, FT-IR, UV-DRS, BET surface area, XPS, and XRD , and showed the best catalytic performance. After 18 h of irradiation, PFOA was almost completely degraded with addition of 5 mg catalyst, while it was hardly degraded by simulated sunlight alone. The low photocatalytic degradation efficiency of PFOA was observed in different natural waters, which was due to the inhibitory effect of high pH and common anions like SO 4 2− . The calculation results of Materials Studio showed that a shoulder-to-shoulder π system between nitrogen atom and oxygen atom (NO π*) was formed after nitrogen doping into interstitial sites of In 2 O 3 , therefore resulting in a reduction in band gap energy. Occupied NO π* states were responsible for the red shift, while unoccupied NO π* levels restrained the recombination of electrons (e − ) and holes (h + ). Nitrogen doping reduced the excitation energy for electronic transition, and thus accelerated the reaction. According to mass spectrometry analysis, decarboxylation and elimination were still the main photodegradation pathways of PFOA. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first to explore the reaction mechanisms of PFOA in an N-doped In 2 O 3 /Xe lamp irradiation system.

In2O3 is an optimal material for sensitive detection of carbon monoxide (CO) gas due to its low resistivity and high catalytic activity. Yet, the gas response dynamics between the CO gas molecules and the surface of In2O3 is limited by its solid structure, resulting in a weak gas response value and sluggish electron transport. Herein, we report a strategy to synthesize porous In2O3/Fe2O3 core–shell nanotubes derived from In/Fe bimetallic organic frameworks. The fabricated porous In2O3/Fe2O3-4 core–shell nanotubes present outstanding gas sensitivities, including a response value 3.8 times (33.7 to 200 ppm CO at 260 °C) higher than that of monometallic-derived In2O3 (8.7), ultrashort response and recovery times (23/76 s) to 200 ppm CO, low detection limit (1 ppm), promising selectivity, and long-term stability. The enhanced sensing mechanisms are clarified by the combination of experiment and first-principles calculations, showing that the synergetic strategy of higher adsorption energy, increased electrical conductivity, higher electron transfer numbers, and larger specific surface area of porous core–shell structures promotes the surface activity and charge transfer efficiency. The present work paves a way to tune gas-sensing materials with special morphologies for the development of high-performance CO sensors.

Although metal oxides based gas sensors have been researched extensively in previous works, there are enormous challenges on improving the deficiencies in poor selectivity, sensitivity, humidity resistance and so on. Hence, we developed an epitaxial growth method to prepare dendritic Co 3 O 4 /In 2 O 3 -(1−3) heterostructures of distinct Co/In mass ratios through perfect lattice matching between the two crystal domains at the interface, along with introducing large amounts of oxygen vacancies . As a result, the Co 3 O 4 /In 2 O 3 -2 heterostructure based gas sensor showed enhanced sensing properties towards triethylamine (TEA, 100 ppm) with a high response value of Ra/Rg = 576.1 at an optimal working temperature of 200 °C, which is 93 times higher than that of pristine In 2 O 3 . Moreover, the Co 3 O 4 /In 2 O 3 -2 sensor exhibited excellent gas selectivity, quick recovery time, repeatable cycling, long-term stability, as well as outstanding humidity resistance. The improved TEA gas sensing performance can be attributed to the integration of interfacial synergies in Co 3 O 4 /In 2 O 3 p-n heterostructure and generation of rich oxygen vacancies, exposing more active sites to facilitate the adsorption/desorption of gas molecules. This work provides a feasible pathway to regulate TEA sensing performance of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors by capitalizing on self-sacrificial template strategy and reconstruction of novel metal oxide heterostructure.

Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) is a promising semiconductor used for various photocatalytic reactions, yet the green and template-free synthesizing the different micro/nanostructured In 2 O 3 with tunable morphology is still full of challenge. In this study, the three morphological In 2 O 3 with 3D micro-cubelike (In 2 O 3 -MC), 3D micro-ricelike (In 2 O 3 -MR), and 2D nano-platelike (In 2 O 3 -NP) were successfully fabricated through a facile hydrothermal strategy without any organic template additives. Owing to the enlarged specific surface area , promoted charge migration rate and suitable surface oxygen vacancies density, the unique 3D ricelike In 2 O 3 -MR exhibited the best photocatalytic H 2 generation activity from biomass glucose solution, which was 1.9-fold and 1.7-fold higher than that of In 2 O 3 -MC and In 2 O 3 -NP under the same experimental conditions. In addition, the optimum photoactivity of In 2 O 3 -MR was achieved under the alkaline environment with pH = 11 and 1.0 wt% Pt cocatalyst loading, which was better than the most of previously reported In 2 O 3 -based photocatalysts . Simultaneously, the possible photocatalytic mechanism for solar H 2 evolution from glucose solution was also discussed. Our work will bring about potential application in preparation of other photocatalysts with controlling morphology for renewable photocatalysis .

Cardiac Troponin I (cTnI) is a preferred biomarker to diagnose acute myocardial infarction which is one of the leading risks to health globally due to its short term. However, clinical analyzers are difficult to achieve its on-site quantitative detection. A novel label-free aptasensor was constructed to realize ultrasensitive and rapid recognition of cTnI. A nanocubic AuNPs/In 2 O 3 composite was designed to provide synergistic effects of abundant active sites and signal magnification for aptamers grafting. Relying on a conductance-dependence strategy, this aptasensor can achieve the quantitative detection within 10 min, which is much faster than state-of-the-art analyzers, as well as exhibiting an ultrawide linear range of 0.1–1000 ng/mL and a low detection limit of 0.06 ng/mL with an excellent selectivity in the analysis of human serum.

Iridium (Ir) catalysts have been extensively applied in homogeneous and photocatalytic CO2 conversion. However, CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over the supported Ir catalyst in a heterogeneous flowing reactor has not been reported yet. Here, we report that indium oxide supported Ir catalyst (Ir/In2O3) of high dispersion is very active for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Compared to In2O3, Ir/In2O3 shows a significantly higher activity with even higher methanol selectivity. For example, CO2 conversion of 17.7% is achieved on Ir/In2O3 of 10 wt % Ir loading with methanol selectivity over 70% and high methanol space time yield of 0.765 gMeOH h–1 gcat–1 at 4/1 of the CO2/H2 feed ratio, 21 000 h–1, 300 °C, and 5 MPa. With the catalysts tested, the higher Ir loading causes the higher activity. The catalyst characterization confirms an intense interaction between iridium and In2O3, which causes the high dispersion of the Ir catalyst with the Ir–In2O3 interface as the active site for selective hydrogenation of CO2 into methanol. The Ir loading not only enhances the formation of oxygen vacancies but also stabilizes the vacancies for improved CO2 activation. Further density functional theory studies reveal that the reverse water–gas shift route is more favorable over the formate route for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over Ir/In2O3 catalyst.

La 2 O 3 -In 2 O 3 composited beaded nanotubes (LIBNTs) and pure In 2 O 3 nanotubes (INTs) were fabricated via a simple electrospinning method. By means of SEM, XRD and XPS analysis, we determined the surface structure, crystal phase and chemical properties of the materials. By test, we determined that the optimum operating temperature of LIBNTs-based sensor was a low temperature of 128 °C. The test results also revealed that LIBNTs-based sensor has an ultra-sensitive response to formaldehyde (101.9/50 ppm) and a faster response/recovery property (3 s and 19 s) compared with INTs-based sensor. The LIBNTs-based sensor also exhibited good linearity, repeatability and selectivity.
