Albumen and BaTiO 3 nanoparticles are employed to make solution processable nanocomposite for high permittivity films. The nanoparticles are modified with poly(acrylic acid) molecules to achieve homogeneous dispersion in albumen aqueous solution and made into films by drop casting. The dielectric constant and loss tangent of albumen–BaTiO 3 nanocomposites are investigated as the function of volume fraction of BaTiO 3 . The nanocomposites exhibit maximum relative permittivity of 52 and good dielectric stability over a wide range of frequency, while the loss tangent is below 0.05 even at high BaTiO 3 loading of 80 vol%. The dielectric constants of nanocomposites with lower volume fractions (<41 vol%) are in good agreement with the Lichtenecker-Logarithmic model.

Arsenic trioxide (As 2 O 3 ) is used to treat acute promyelocytic leukemia. However, the cardiotoxicity of long QT syndrome restricts its clinical application. Previous studies showed that As 2 O 3 can damage the human ether-a-go-go-related gene (hERG) current via disturbing its trafficking to cellular membrane. This study aimed to investigate whether the As 2 O 3 -insulted hERG channel can be rescued by resveratrol, a recognized cardioprotective agent. The whole-cell patch clamp technique was used to record the hERG current and action potential duration. Co-immunoprecipitation and Western blot assay were applied to determine the function of hERG-Hsp70/Hsp90 chaperone complexes and the expression alteration of protein-folding-related proteins, respectively. Compared with treatment of As 2 O 3 alone, co-treatment with resveratrol successfully restored the current and surface expression of hERG and obviously shortened action potential duration in guinea pig ventricular myocytes. Further experiments demonstrate that resveratrol relieved As 2 O 3 -caused endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress by restoring the function of hERG-Hsp70/Hsp90 chaperone complexes and downregulating the protein expression of ER chaperone proteins (calnexin and calreticulin) and activating transcription factor 6. In conclusion, resveratrol was able to rescue the trafficking deficiency and relieve the ER stress (ERS). Our findings suggest that resveratrol has a potential effect to alleviate the adverse effect of As 2 O 3 on cardiotoxicity.

The solubility of phthalic anhydride was measured at 283–313 K under atmospheric pressure in ethyl acetate, n -propyl acetate, methyl acetate, acetone, 1,4-dioxane, n -hexane, n -butyl acetate, cyclohexane, and dichloromethane. The solubility of phthalic anhydride in all solvents increased with the increasing temperature. The Van’t Hoff equation, modified Apelblat equation, λ h equation, and Wilson model were used to correlate the experimental solubility data. The standard dissolution enthalpy, the standard entropy, and the standard Gibbs energy were evaluated based on the Van’t Hoff analysis. The experimental data and model parameters would be useful for optimizing of the separation processes involving phthalic anhydride.

Tin sulfide (SnS) exhibits the potential to be used as a superior-performance electrode material for potassium ion batteries. However, serious volume expansion and poor ion transport capacity hinder the applications of SnS. In order to solve the above problems, this work designed a structure that parallel WS 2 sheets were embedded in SnS sheets (SnS/WS 2 @C). SnS/WS 2 @C displayed excellent kinetic properties and stability when applied to anode materials for potassium ion batteries, as well as a high reversible capacity. SnS/WS 2 @C maintains a superior specific capacity of 619 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g −1 and 210 mAh g −1 at 10 A g −1 . Such excellent performance is attributed to the fact that parallelly oriented WS 2 sheets provide fast channels for the transportation of potassium ions, which significantly improves the kinetic performance of the electrode, and can play an anchoring role for products in the process of charging and discharging by virtue of its excellent stability to effectively prevent structural fragmentation. This work provides new ideas for improving ion diffusion and enhancing the structural stability of transition metal layered compounds while maintaining the capacity advantage.

Aqueous zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) exhibit great potential for energy storage and conversion devices, owing to their inherent safety and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the structure of traditional porous carbon cathodes hinders the zinc-ion diffusion kinetics, rendering the energy densities of conventional ZHSCs uncompetitive and severely impeding their practical applications. 2D transition metal carbides/nitrides, known as MXenes, exhibit excellent conductivity and abundant surface functional groups, qualifying them as ideal candidates for constructing high-capacity cathodes in high-performance ZHSCs. This study presents the fabrication of a ZHSC utilizing 3D porous K + -intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T X -reduced graphene oxide (K + -Ti 3 C 2 T X -RGO) hydrogel as cathode, paired with a zinc foil as anode. Upon treatment with KOH solution, Ti 3 C 2 T X undergoes K + ion intercalation into its nanosheets, resulting in partial elimination of terminal -F groups and expansion of the MXene interlayer spacing. Subsequently, large-scale graphene oxide (GO) was employed as a conductive binder to interconnect the intercalated multilayer Ti 3 C 2 T X , and a reducing agent was incorporated to facilitate self-assembly into a hydrogel. This approach augmented the accessibility of ions and facilitated their transport within the resultant structure. The ZHSC, fabricated with this composite cathode, synergistically integrates the supercapacitor’s high-power density and the battery’s high energy density. The results indicate that the ZHSC exhibited excellent electrochemical performance, featuring a high specific capacitance of 253.86 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 and an impressive energy density of 141.03 Wh kg −1 at 999.99 W kg −1 . Notably, after 5000 charge-discharge cycles at 10 A g −1 , the ZHSC maintained a capacitance retention rate above 87.96 %, highlighting its exceptional cycling stability.

In this study, a novel electrical Mn-based film was developed for selective potassium (K+) separation, in which delaminated MnOx was obtained with the assistance of Ho3+ using a facile coprecipitation method and coated on carbon paper with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and graphitized carbon black. With the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations, it was found that abundant multiphase interfaces and lattice dislocations appeared on the bulk of Ho-MnOx. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis verified that the delamination assisted by Ho3+ increased the specific surface area from 110.3 m2/g (MnOx) to 166.8 m2/g (1% Ho-MnOx), which should be beneficial for the exposing of more electrochemical active areas and active sites for K+ adsorption and separation. Particularly, 1% Ho-MnOx had a high concentration of oxygen vacancies and showed a better K+ adsorption ability than MnOx. It was considered that the adsorption of K+ was mainly affected by the ion memory toward K+ for the 1% Ho-MnOx. In addition, the 1% Ho-MnOx film had good stable retention and regeneration capability for the separation of K+; after 10 cycles of adsorption and desorption, the film still retained 87.24% of the maximum adsorption capacity for K+. It is expected to provide an effective preparation method to obtain a high-performance K+ removal film electrode for the separation of K+ under a low concentration.

Background Although colistin is widely recognized as the last line of antibiotics against gram-negative bacteria, the emergence and spread of colistin resistance severely diminish its clinical efficacy and application. An alternative strategy to alleviate this crisis is to identify promising colistin adjuvants with enhanced antibacterial activity. Purpose In this study, the adjuvant effects of paeonol on colistin and the underlying mechanisms were investigated. Method Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and checkerboard assays were used to investigate the adjuvant activity and structure-activity relationship of paeonol on the antibacterial effect of colistin in vitro . Time-dependent killing and resistance development assays were used to investigate the bactericidal effects and emergence of colistin resistance. Different fluorescent probes and competitive inhibition tests were used to investigate bacterial membrane functions and potential targets. Skin infection and peritonitis-sepsis models were used to evaluate the combined in vivo effects of colistin and paeonol in vivo . Result Paeonol enhanced the antibacterial effects of colistin against gram-negative bacteria, particularly Klebsiella pneumoniae . Structure-activity relationship analysis showed that the hydroxyl, 4-methoxy and ketone carbonyl side chains of the benzene ring contributed to the adjuvant effect of paeonol. Paeonol enhances the bactericidal effects of colistin and minimizes the emergence of colistin resistance. Notably, mechanistic studies demonstrated that the combination of colistin and peonol enhances membrane disruption and oxidative damage, possibly via interactions with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylglycerol (PG), and cardiolipin (CAL). Importantly, paeonol enhanced the efficacy of colistin in both the skin and peritonitis infection models. Conclusion This is the first report on the adjuvant potential of paeonol in colistin to combat K. pneumoniae by promoting membrane disruption and oxidative damage via targeting membrane phospholipids. Notably, the verified target, PE, provides an additional avenue for screening new colistin adjuvants. The combination therapy of paeonol and colistin is a promising strategy for treating infections caused by gram-negative pathogens to address antibiotic resistance issues.

The stable phase equilibrium of the ternary system NaVO3–KVO3–H2O at 298.15 K was investigated using the isothermal solution equilibrium method and the Schreinemaker wet residue method. The equilibrium liquid phase solubility data and physical property data [density (ρ), refractive index (nD), pH] were determined, and X-ray diffraction was utilized to verify the material composition of the equilibrium solid phase. Phase diagrams and physical property–composition diagrams were constructed based on the equilibrium solubility data and physical property data. The results show that the ternary system has a complex salt generation process with two invariant points, three univariate curves, and three crystalline phase regions corresponding to NaVO3·2H2O, KVO3, and Na2mKn(VO3)2m+n, respectively. The solid phase precipitated from a saturated NaVO3 solution at 298.15 K is NaVO3·2H2O, as confirmed by a comparison of experimental results and the literature. The chemical composition of the complex salt generated from the NaVO3–KVO3–H2O ternary system follows the general formula of the Na2mKn(VO3)2m+n complex salt proposed by Druzynski’s group, thereby validating the reliability of the present experiment. This study provides new experimental data for the preparation and separation of metavanadate.

Excessive emission of CO2 into the atmosphere has severely impacted the global ecological environment. Converting CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels is of great significance for sustainable development. However, low activity and undesirable selectivity often result from the inherent inertness of CO2. Herein, K- or/and Zn-modified Fe-based catalysts were prepared by an incipient-wetness impregnation method for CO2 hydrogenation via a cascade reaction. The results indicate that K species exist as K2O while Zn species exist as ZnFe2O4. In the CO2 hydrogenation pathway, K2O facilitates the adsorption of CO2 and restrains the adsorption of H2, accelerating the transformation of CO2 into C2–C4 olefins rather than paraffins while Zn species promote the dispersion of Fe species, leading to improved activity. Synergistically, a K- and Zn-modified Fe-based catalyst (2Zn–10K–Fe/Al) shows excellent catalytic CO2 hydrogenation activity, achieving a CO2 conversion of 77% which is 1.8 times that (42%) of the unmodified Fe-based catalyst (Fe/Al). Our catalyst also shows a significantly promoted selectivity to C2–C4 olefins of 17% in comparison with the Fe/Al catalyst (0%). It is envisioned that such a binary effect of elements might contribute to the low-cost and industrial production of Fe-based catalysts for selective CO2 conversion.

There have been various interventions for photoaging skin, such as retinoic acid treatment and laser therapy. However, more precise, secure, and effective technologies and materials were still need to be explored. Cathepsin D (CTSD) repairs the epidermal barrier in chronic photodamaged skin through increasing TGase-1 expression and activity. Cathepsin K (CTSK) affects the metabolism of skin elastic fibers. Therefore, gelatin/alginate composite hydrogel microspheres loaded with CTSD or CTSK were fabricated. The microspheres with an average size of 79.8 ± 30.4 μm were stable in PBS (pH 7.4) for 5 days and then disintegrated in vitro . 0.1 mg/mL of microspheres continuously released 12-13 ng/mL CTSD or CTSK for the first three consecutive days. In vivo , the microspheres were almost completed degraded on day 7 after the subcutaneous injection. The biosafety and efficacy of CTSD- and CTSK- microspheres were confirmed in vitro and in vivo . They reduced ROS and inhibited the degradation of skin collagen and elastic fibers by upregulating Nrf2 and downregulating MMP-1 and MMP-3, which reversed photodamage of skin induced by UV. In conclusion, the gelatin/alginate composite microspheres loaded with CTSD or CTSK showed a great potential for chronic photodamaged skin.

This study aimed to investigate the synergistic effect between gelatin and κ-carrageenan on the structure and properties of bigels. Beeswax was used as the oleogelator, while gelatin and κ-carrageenan served as hydrogelators to prepare oleogels and hydrogels separately. The two gels were subsequently mixed in an ice-water bath to form bigels. By adjusting the ratio of gelatin to κ-carrageenan in the hydrogel phase, the microstructure, freeze–thaw stability, and rheological properties of the resulting bigels were systematically characterized. The results revealed that increasing gelatin content led to a reduction in interfacial tension within the aqueous phase, resulting in finer oil droplet dispersion and a more homogeneous and compact microstructure. The synergistic interaction between gelatin and κ-carrageenan enhanced the stability of the hydrogel network and improved its oil encapsulation capacity, thereby significantly improving the freeze–thaw stability of the bigels. Rheological analysis showed that an appropriate proportion of gelatin notably increased the storage modulus of the bigels, indicating a more robust internal structure. This study provides a novel strategy for the development of high-performance structured lipids for food applications.

The development of ultra-low-temperature magnetocaloric materials (MCMs) is crucial for advanced cryogenic refrigeration technologies. Rare-earth fluorides exhibit promising magnetocaloric properties, but the high magnetic ordering temperatures ( T 0 ) limit their performance below 2 K. Single-phase KLnF 4 (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm) compounds with a trigonal structure were successfully synthesized by introducing the diamagnetic K⁺ ions into LnF 3 via solid-state sintering. Structural analysis confirms that the K⁺ incorporation increases the distance between Ln 3+ ions, suppressing dipolar interactions and reducing T 0 to below 2 K. Notably, KHoF 4 exhibits a 16.5 % higher magnetic entropy change (-∆ S M ) than HoF 3 , attributed to the lower magnetic anisotropy of the trigonal KHoF 4 with higher symmetry. The effects of these two aspects overcome the negative impact caused by the decrease of the magnetic ion concentration. These findings demonstrate that K⁺ incorporation is a dual-functional strategy for simultaneously modulating transition temperatures and magnetocaloric performance of rare-earth fluorides. This work provides a scalable approach to designing ultra-low-temperature MCMs with various refrigeration windows.
