Peroxymonosulfate(PMS)-based advanced oxidation process has demonstrated significant potential for the remediation of emerging organic contaminants in water. In this study, a sea urchin-like nickel-cobalt double hydroxide (Ni 1 Co 2 -LDH) catalyst was developed and exhibited superior performance and robust durability in PMS activation. The system achieved 99.28% removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) within 60 minutes, with a reaction rate constant of 0.1393 min −1 , and also exhibits broad applicability for degrading various representative organic pollutants. Radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy identified singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) as the predominant reactive species responsible for SMX degradation, followed by hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Density functional theory calculations further revealed the critical role of oxygen molecules in both PMS activation via electron transfer and the generation of O •− 2 , a key precursor to 1 O 2 . The singlet oxygen exhibited high selectivity in degrading SMX through 1,2-addition reaction pathways. This study highlights the role of oxygen in PMS activation and provides valuable insights for addressing the challenge of persistent organic pollutants in complex aquatic environments.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D vdWHs) have garnered significant interest owing to their ability of efficiently interfacial electron transfer, tunable band structures, and high structural stability. Nevertheless, the utilization of 2D vdWHs as multifunctional electrocatalysts is still rarely explored. In this work, we synthesized a 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst via high-temperature solid-state and hydrothermal methods, featuring a 2D vdWH architecture in which FeCo LDH nanosheets are uniformly anchored onto the TiN/NC substrate. The resulting electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable trifunctional activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), comparable to those of commercial catalysts. The superior electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the interfacial electron redistribution, in which the electron transfer from TiN/NC to FeCo LDH enhances charge transfer kinetics and increases the number of active sites during electrochemical reactions. Moreover, the 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst shows great promise for applications in both zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and overall water splitting. This study underscores the potential of 2D vdWHs and offers valuable insights for the design of advanced multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Cu-based nanocatalysts hold promise for the reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction. However, irreversible sintering of the Cu catalyst for deactivation remains a persistent challenge under thermal or photothermal processes. In this study, we develop an anti-sintering catalyst using CuNiMgAl layered-double-hydroxide (LDH)-derived hydroxyl engineering to anchor ultrafine CuNi nanoparticles, achieving stable photothermal RWGS conversion. For Cu 3 Ni-MA, the oxyphilic Ni dopants facilitate the formation of hydroxyl-coordinated Cu 2+ –Ni 2+ species during the calcination of LDH-derived materials; meanwhile, the Ni incorporation enhances the plasmonic effect of CuNi nanocatalysts to drive H 2 spillover for hydroxyl replenishment under light irradiation, which is diverged from conventional Cu 3 Ni alloy-based catalysts. This Cu 3 Ni-MA achieves a CO production rate of 339.8 mmol g −1 h −1 with 98% selectivity, outperforming thermal catalysis by 3.5-fold in RWGS conversion. Notably, the catalyst exhibits robust photothermal CO 2 hydrogenation stability, preserving >99% of its original activity and CO selectivity during 30 d of intermittent start–stop cycles and 280-h continuous testing. This study offers alternative perspectives for designing anti-sintering catalysts for photothermal catalytic systems by coupling dynamic hydroxyl regulation with plasmonic activation mechanisms.

Superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ) play a pivotal role in photocatalysis, yet studies on the selective enhancement of •O 2 − pathways to improve the degradation efficiency toward •O 2 − -sensitive pollutants remain scarce. Accordingly, we selected g-C 3 N 4 , which is recognized for generating •O 2 − as the primary reactive species in pollutant degradation, as the host photocatalyst for selectivity design. A g-C 3 N 4 /LDHs/CoPcS ternary photocatalyst with dual type-II heterojunction was synthesized via coprecipitation, calcination, and hydrothermal treatment. The material's properties were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, and UV–vis DRS. Under visible light, the optimal g-C 3 N 4 /LDHs/Co-5 composite exhibited a 29.7 % increase in tetracycline degradation efficiency and a 2.25-fold increase in the reaction rate constant compared to pristine g-C 3 N 4 . Additionally, the photocatalytic mechanism was investigated through reactive species capture experiments and ESR analysis, with transient photocurrent responses, EIS measurements, Mott-Schottky analysis, and PL spectra providing complementary evidence. The results indicated that the positive surface charges of the composite accelerated electron transfer to O 2 , thereby speeding its reduction to •O 2 − , promoting selective •O 2 − generation and improving the photocatalytic degradation efficiency. This ternary composite advances g-C 3 N 4 from general photocatalytic use to •O 2 − -selective applications, providing an effective approach for degrading tetracycline and other •O 2 − -sensitive pollutants.

Alkaline seawater oxidation has attracted significant attention for hydrogen production via water splitting. However, the high concentration of Cl - and the corrosive intermediates from Cl - oxidation reaction pose serious challenges to the activity and durability of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Here, ultrafine NiFe-LDH supported on defect-rich graphite nanosheets is synthesized via a spatial confinement strategy. During the OER process, carbon defects of the graphite support undergo in situ oxidation to generate CO 3 2- species, which adsorb onto the ultrafine NiFe-LDH surface, forming an electrostatic repulsion network that effectively blocks Cl - access to active sites. Theoretical calculations further confirm that CO 3 2- adsorption modulates the electronic structure of catalytic active centers, enhancing their intrinsic activity. Consequently, the catalyst achieves a low overpotential of only 320 mV under a current density of 1 A cm −2 in simulated seawater and an outstanding selectivity with a Faradaic efficiency of 99.8 %. Under practical alkaline seawater, it maintains stable operation for over 1000 h at 0.5 A cm −2 . This work offers a promising route for designing high-performance and durable electrocatalysts for alkaline seawater electrolysis.

Designing a reasonable structure for electrode materials is critical to increase the performance of supercapacitor . Herein, the 3D hierarchical structure composite materials contained carbon cloth, cobalt carbonate hydroxide nanorod and metal-organic frameworks derived layered double hydroxide cage hybrid arrays (CC@CCH-MOF-LDH HAs) are designed. This unique hierarchical structure and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic system improve the electrical conductivity of the material, provide more active sites and shorten the ion transport path, which are beneficial to increase the electrochemical performance of the composite material. Electrochemical measurements show that CC@CCH-MOF-LDH HAs have high specific capacitance of 1700 F g −1 at current density of 2 A g −1 , superior rate capability (even the current density was increased to 50 A g −1 , the capacitance retention rate reached 78.2%) and good cycling stability, which indicate that the CC@CCH-MOF-LDH HAs with 3D hierarchical structure is a very promising supercapacitor electrode material.

The exploration of high-performance, cost-effective, and stable electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for future energy storage and conversion technologies. Cobalt-based hydroxides and oxides have been considered as ideal OER electrocatalysts and have been intensively studied; however, their catalytic activity is still unsatisfactory. It is known that the interfacial electron and structure engineering of composite electrocatalysts often results in synergistically enhanced catalytic performance. Herein, a self-supported binary heterogeneous catalyst composed of CoFe LDH/Co0.85Se nanosheet arrays vertically grown on carbon cloth has been reported. The heterostructure electrocatalyst exhibits excellent activity for the OER in alkaline electrolyte, requiring an overpotential of only 241 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 48 mV dec−1. These performances are significantly better than those of the bare CoFe LDH and Co0.85Se catalysts. Moreover, the composite electrodes exhibit outstanding durability within 40 h of testing. Our further electrochemical results show that the excellent activities of the heterostructure electrodes should be ascribed to the interfacial coupling effect, increased number of activity sites, accelerated electron transfer, and strong structural stability. This work paves an interesting route for boosting the OER performance of oxide-based electrocatalysts by the regulation of electronic structure through introducing non oxide electrocatalysts for various applications.

High-performance lubricants are vital for industrial machinery operating under extreme loads and temperatures, yet conventional additives often fail to meet modern industrial demands due to limited tribological performance. This study reports an oleylamine-modified nickel-iron layered double hydroxide-molybdenum disulfide (OA-NiFe-LDH/MoS 2 ) nanocomposite, synthesized under mild conditions via in-situ surface modification in a one-pot liquid-phase route. The rigid NiFe-LDH lamellae provide abundant adsorption sites and cooperate with the low-shear-stress characteristic of flexible MoS 2 nanosheets to enable fast adsorption and high-load lubrication. Anti-wear and friction-reduction of the nanocomposite in poly-α-olefin-6 (PAO6) base oil were evaluated on a four-ball friction tester. Parallel tests on pristine OA-MoS 2 nanoparticles were conducted to isolate the contribution of the LDH component. At 75°C and 392 N, coefficient of friction (COF) decreased by 36 % to 0.066, with exceptional anti-wear performance maintained at 150°C, significantly outperforming neat PAO6 and OA-MoS 2 alone in steel-steel contacts. Spectroscopic and thermal analyses demonstrate superior dispersibility, while surface characterization reveals that the nanocomposite promotes extensive tribochemical formation of sulfides and oxides, forming a durable transfer film that minimizes metal contact and wear. Synergistic interplay between adsorption capacity of NiFe-LDH and lubricity of MoS 2 enables robust physical and chemisorbed films, ensuring stability under extreme conditions. Thermal stability and oxidation resistance of the nanocomposite mitigate lubricant degradation, offering a promising strategy for designing energy-efficient, durable lubricants for high-load, high-temperature industrial applications, with substantial potential to lower operational costs and environmental impact.

Developing bifunctional electrocatalysts with high activity and long term durability remains challenging for overall water splitting, mainly due to sluggish reaction kinetics and structural instability under high current densities. Herein, an oxygen vacancy rich RuCoFe-LDH electrocatalyst with low Ru content was successfully fabricated on nickel foam through a one step hydrothermal method. TMAOH inhibition, pH dependent analyses, and isotope labeling DEMS measurements collectively reveal that the synergistic coupling between Ru doping and oxygen vacancies promotes lattice oxygen participation and activates the LOM pathway during OER. Benefiting from the optimized electronic structure, RuCoFe-LDH/NF requires overpotentials of only 212 and 131 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, with corresponding Tafel slopes of 30.7 and 61.7 mV dec −1 . Moreover, the RuCoFe-LDH based electrolyzer achieves 100 mA cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.75 V and maintains stable operation for 1000 h during both OER and HER, and the corresponding full electrolyzer also operates stably for 1000 h at 100 mA cm −2 . This work provides an effective strategy for designing high performance LDH based bifunctional electrocatalysts through low content Ru incorporation and oxygen vacancy engineering.

Manipulating internal charge migration pathways by regulating the electron distribution is an effective strategy to enhance photogenerated carriers separation and migration, which is critical for advancing photocatalytic water reduction technology. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as the precursor, chemical etching facilitates the growth of uniform and dense CoNi-layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) nanosheets along the cubic shell, ultimately forming CoNi-LDH hollow nanocages. Additionally, A type-II heterojunction with precisely controlled TiO x thickness, denoted as CoNi-LDH/TiO x , was engineered using atomic layer deposition (ALD). This technique takes the advantage of the unique self-limiting reactions of ALD to achieve atomic-level thickness control, which is crucial for the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, this promotes the migration efficiency of these carriers. The optimized CoNi-LDH/TiO x photocatalyst achieved a hydrogen production rate of 5.239 mmol g −1 h −1 , showing a fourfold increase in efficiency. These results provide valuable insights for future research and development in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production, particularly when utilizing LDH-based catalysts.

A facile one-pot strategy synthesizes porous B-NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 2D/2D heterostructures. • B doping tunes electronic structure and strengthens NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 interfacial bond. • Composite shows enlarged surface area and optimal porous structure for ion transport. • This work offers a universal strategy for designing doped 2D heterostructures. MXenes and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) emerge as advanced electrode candidates for high-performance supercapacitors. Nevertheless, pure Ti 3 C 2 or LDH suffers from either self-stacking or low electronic conductivity and instability. In this work, porous B-doped NiCo-LDH (B-NiCo-LDH) anchored on Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets has been designed and fabricated via a one-pot co-precipitation reaction. Element doping, composite fabrication and structural regulation are realized simultaneously via a simple one-step synthetic strategy. The obtained 2D/2D B-NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 heterostructures combine the advantages of LDH, Ti 3 C 2 , element doping and porous structure. Boron incorporation diminishes interfacial binding energy in the B-NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 system, expedites electron movement across interfaces, and ameliorates the composite’s electrical conductivity. The optimal B-NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 -20 delivers a specific capacitance of 1581.66 F g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 , a rate capability with 82.73% capacitance retention at 20 A g −1 , and a cycling stability of 77.55% after 5000 cycles. An aqueous battery-type hybrid asymmetric supercapacitor (HASC, B-NiCo-LDH/Ti 3 C 2 -20//Bi 2 O 3 /Ti 3 C 2 ) exhibits an energy density of 87.28 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 753.86 W kg −1 .
