Spectroscopic investigation of K5La(MoO4)4:Sm3+ red phosphor with excellent thermal stability and color purity for white LEDs

Ruiqi Yang,Ju Li,Xinjing Xie,Jingjing Lian,Chaoyue Wang,Changlin Li,Haoran Su,Zhequan Zou,Shouan Xie,Ruijin Yu

In this study, a series of innovative red-emitting Sm 3+ -doped K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 phosphors were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The X-ray powder diffraction patterns and Rietveld refinement confirmed the single-phase structure of the synthesized K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 :Sm 3+ samples with trigonal system (space group R 3 ‾ 3‾ m (#166)). The phosphors demonstrated a strong red emission at 644 nm, corresponding to the electric dipole transition 4 G 5/2  →  6 H 9/2 of Sm 3+ ions. The optimal doping concentration for K 5 La (1- x ) ( MoO 4 ) 4 : x Sm 3+ was found to be approximately 5 mol%. The temperature-dependent emission of phosphors was examined and found that the luminescence intensity remained at 86 % even at 480 K, showing the exceptional thermal stability of this material. K 5 La (1- x ) ( MoO 4 ) 4 : x Sm 3+ phosphors displayed remarkable color stability with chromaticity coordinates falling within the red region in 1931 CIE diagram. K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 :5 mol%Sm 3+ exhibited a high color purity of 99.9 % and internal quantum efficiency (IQE) was measured as 66.8 %. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were constructed using InGaN chips and the synthesized red phosphors. The chromaticity coordinates of the fabricated w-LED (white light-emitting diode) were (0.330, 0.351), closely resembling the typical white point of the National Television System Committee (NTSC) at (0.333, 0.333). The color rendering index (CRI, R a ) and correlated color temperature (CCT) of w-LED were 87 and 5627 K. These findings strongly suggest the potential use of K 5 La(MoO 4 ) 4 :Sm 3+ phosphors as red phosphors in LEDs.

Zero-Dimensional Organic–Inorganic Hybrid Zinc Halides for Multiple Applications in Anti-Counterfeiting, X-Ray Imaging and White LEDs

Yunluo Wang,Tianrui Zhou,Jie Chen,Haoming Qin,Jianghua Wu,Qing Zhang,Jiaqian Zheng,Xiang Li,Yi-Yang Sun,Yihui He,Xueqing Ma,Tingting Ye,Ruifeng Liu,Zesen Gao,Jingshan Hou,Lianjun Wang,Haijie Chen,Wan Jiang

Zinc halides have been less explored even though they are a promising lead-free family with the merits of environmental friendliness and low cost. Here, the organic–inorganic hybrid zinc halides are screened with aromatic molecules containing amino groups (MXDA: m-Xylylenediamine, ABI: 2-Aminobenzimidazole, pipda: 2-piperidylmethylamine, p-MPEA: p-Methylphenethylamine), and six new compounds are discovered: (MXDA)ZnCl 4 ( 1 ), (ABI) 2 ZnCl 4 ( 2 ), (pipda) 2 H 2 OZnCl 2 ( 3 ), [(pipda) 4 Zn 2 Br 4 ]·H 2 O ( 4 ), (p-MPEA) 2 ZnCl 4 ( 5 ), and (p-MPEA) 2 ZnBr 4 ( 6 ). The discovered compounds exhibit diverse efficient light emissions (blue, green, yellow, and ultraviolet) under ultraviolet light irradiation. By doping Sb and Mn at the Zn site, (MXDA)ZnCl 4 exhibits different colors of light under excitation light of different wavelengths, so it is successfully used for anti-counterfeiting. (MXDA)Zn 0.91 Mn 0.09 Cl 4 is also found to be an efficient X-ray scintillator for X-ray imaging. Among the as-explored new phases, a maximum photoluminescent quantum yield of 82.60% is realized, enabling the utilization for white light-emitting diodes. The results suggest that the zinc halides are a new lead-free family with superior optoelectronic properties, which can be used for multiple applications.

Synthesis and luminescence properties of efficient red phosphors SrAl4O7:Mn4+,R+ (R+=Li+, Na+, and K+) for white LEDs

Renping Cao,Qingqiang Xiong,Wenjie Luo,Donglan Wu,Xiao Fen,Xiaoguang Yu

A series of SrAl [4−(4 x )/3] O 7 : x Mn 4+ (0≤ x ≤1.4   mol%) and Sr (1−0.06/2) Al [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ ,0.06R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) phosphors are synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction method in air. The PLE bands peaking at~325, 395, and 470   nm and the strongest PL band peaking at~660   nm are assigned to the 4 A 2 → 4 T 1 transition of Mn 4+ ion and O 2− –Mn 4+ change transfer band, 4 A 2 → 2 T 1 , 4 A 2 → 4 T 2 , and 2 E → 4 A 2 transitions, respectively. The optimum Mn 4+ doping concentration is about 0.8   mol%. Li + , Na + , and K + ions used as charge compensator can improve observably the PL intensity of SrAl 4 O 7 :Mn 4+ phosphor with excitation 325   nm. The fluorescence lifetimes of SrAl [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ and Sr [1−0.06/2] Al [4−(4×0.008)/3] O 7 :0.008Mn 4+ ,0.06   R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) are 0.958, 0.97, 1.113 and 0.965   ms, respectively. The luminous mechanism is explained by schematic energy level diagram of Mn 4+ ion. These experiment results indicate that SrAl 4 O 7 :Mn 4+ ,R + (R + =Li + , Na + , and K + ) phosphors can be used as red emitting phosphor candidate for white LEDs based on a UV (~325   nm) and near UV (~395   nm) bands of LEDs chip.

Development of single matrix aluminum silicate fluorescent powder activated by Bi3+, Eu3+, and Eu2+ and use in white LEDs

Reziwanguli Yantake,Aierken Sidike,Palidan Aierken,Taximaiti Yusufu

In the field of luminescent materials, the search for good substrates and the use of a single substrate to excite near-ultraviolet chips to produce white LED devices has always been of great interest. This study utilized energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ to design KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ red emission phosphors with a potassium nepheline structure, which were calcined in air with a high-temperature solid-state method. Under 286 nm excitation, energy transfer between Bi 3+ and Eu 3+ up to 85.9 %. Through DFT theoretical calculations, it was found that the bandgap of the matrix was 4.86 eV, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ has excellent heat quenching resistance, and the emission intensity at 150 °C is 92.9 % of that seen at room temperature . Second, by doping with Eu 2 O 3 and calcining in a reducing atmosphere, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + broadband blue emitting phosphors were obtained. Finally, KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ was mixed with KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Eu 2+ , 0.1Li + to prepare a near-ultraviolet white LED device. The color rendering index of the device reached 87.1, the color coordinates were (0.3328, 0.3015), and the color temperature was 5422 K. These results proved that KAlSiO 4 : 0.02Bi 3+ , 0.04Eu 3+ samples have potential for use in near-ultraviolet white LEDs and that KAlSiO 4 is a good substrate in the field of luminescence. This work provides a new breakthrough in the use of a single substrate to prepare multiple colored fluorescent powders and mix them together to produce white LED devices.

Solid-state synthesis of cesium manganese halide nanocrystals in glass with bright and broad red emission for white LEDs

Guangyong Xu,Chuying Wang,Yacong Li,Wen Meng,Guigen Luo,Min Peng,Bin Xu,Zhengtao Deng

Recently, lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted extensive attention due to their unique optical properties. However, the toxicity of lead and the instability to moisture obstruct their further commercial development. Herein, a series of lead-free CsMnX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) NCs embedded in glasses were synthesized by a high temperature solid-state chemistry method. These NCs embedded in glass can remain stable after soaking in water for 90 days. It is found that increasing the amount of cesium carbonate in the synthesis process can not only prevent the oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn3+ and promote the transparency of glass in the 450–700 nm region, but also significantly increase its photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from 2.9% to 65.1%, which is the highest reported value of the red CsMnX3 NCs so far. Using CsMnBr3 NCs with a red emission peak at 649 nm and full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) of 130 nm as the red light source, a white light-emitting diode (LED) device with International Commission on illumination (CIE) coordinates of (0.33, 0.36) and a color rendering index (CRI) of 94 was obtained. These findings, together with future research, are likely to yield stable and bright lead-free NCs for the next generation of solid-state lighting.

A highly luminescent Mn4+ activated LaAlO3 far-red-emitting phosphor for plant growth LEDs: charge compensation induced Mn4+ incorporation

Yibo Chen,Conghua Yang,Meiping Deng,Jin He,Yiqin Xu,Zhao-Qing Liu

As a potential far-red-emitting candidate for plant growth LEDs, Mn4+ activated oxide phosphors have brand-new application prospects. However, it remains a significant challenge to develop highly efficient far-red-emitting phosphors due to their intrinsic energy loss in a large Stokes shift. Herein, we present a rational charge compensation strategy with a fusible charge compensator MgF2 at the molecular level to synthesize a LaAlO3:Mn4+,Mg2+ far-red-emitting phosphor. Notably, MgF2 can play an essential role in the incorporation of Mn4+ into the crystal matrix during the high-temperature solid-state reaction process, and thus induce a highly luminescent phosphor with a quantum yield of 78.6% and appropriate thermal stability. The fabrication of a high-performance far-red-emitting phosphor-converted LED further identifies the application potential of the modified Mn4+ activated LaAlO3 phosphor. This finding sheds light on the further exploration of high-grade far-red phosphors.

Preparation of novel KAlSiO4: Ce3+ broadband cyan-emitting phosphors via partial cation substitution for applications in white-light LEDs

Reziwanguli Yantake,Palidan Aierken,Taximaiti Yusufu,Zhou Shihang,Aierken Sidike

Broadband cyan-emitting phosphors with strong absorption between 300 and 400 nm are ideal replacements for traditional blue and green phosphors used in commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this paper, a series of K 1-x AlSiO 4 : xCe 3+ (x = 0.02–0.06) broadband cyan phosphors were prepared using the traditional high-temperature solid state method and the cation un-equivalent substitution strategy. It was found that the KAlSiO 4 matrix has a monoclinic structure with high symmetry. The experimental and theoretical optical band gaps of the host were 5.6 eV and 4.86 eV, respectively. After doping with Ce 3+ , strong absorption was observed in the near ultraviolet region. The optimum Ce 3+ doping concentration in the host was 0.04 as indicated by the strongest observed emission intensity. The full width at half maximum of the emission spectra of the series of samples are all greater than 120 nm and covered the blue and green wavelength ranges (370–600 nm). The luminous intensity of the K 0 · 96 AlSiO 4 : 0.04Ce 3+ phosphor at 150 °C was 91.1% of that at room temperature, and the Gaussian peak of the emission spectrum slightly broadened. These results were also combination with theoretical DFT calculations. It was found that the phosphor had very good thermal stability and rigidity. The phosphor was also mixed with a commercial red phosphor, interfaced with a UV chip and packaged into an LED. This LED was characterized and had a color rendering index greater than 90 across a broad range of drive currents. This work highlights the utility of the fabricated phosphor as means of simplifying white-light LED fabrication.

Synthesis and characterization of a new double perovskite phosphor: NaCaTiTaO6:Dy3+ with high thermal stability for w-LEDs application

Jiang Guo,Sichun Li,Jiayun Kong,Yuxin Li,Li Zhou,Liyang Lou,Qiuyi Lv,Rong Tang,Lingling Zheng,Bin Deng,Ruijin Yu

A new yellow-emitting phosphor, NaCaTiTaO 6 :Dy 3+ , was synthesized via solid-phase synthesis at 1300 ℃. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Rietveld refinement showed that the prepared phosphors exhibited a stable double perovskite structure. The particle size of the phosphor was around 3.8 μm. The maximum emission peak at 574 nm is attributed to the 4 F 9/2 → 6 H 13/2 energy level transition under irradiation at 389 nm. The optimum Dy 3+ doping concentration is 0.10 M equivalent, and concentration quenching is due to the nearest neighbor ion interaction. The luminescence intensity of the phosphor was reduced by only 15% at 420 K, exhibiting high thermal stability. Quantum yield (QY) was measured to be 26.31%. Finally, the Commission International de I’Eclairage (CIE) color coordinate of the phosphor for white light emitting diode (w-LED) was (0.314, 0.323), with a color rendering index ( R a ) of 92 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5578 K. Above all, the Dy 3+ -doped double perovskite NaCaTiTaO 6 :Dy 3+ phosphor is expected to be used in w-LEDs.

Deep-red-emitting Mg2InSbO6:Mn4+ phosphors with a double-perovskite structure for plant-cultivation LEDs: Synthesis and photoluminescence properties

Yuanyuan Liu,Jing Gao,Wen Shi,Xuyao Feng,Zijing Zhou,Jianxu Wang,Junlan Guo,Ruyi Kang,Bin Deng,Ruijin Yu

In this study, novel deep-red-emitting Mg 2 InSbO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphors were prepared through a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The as-prepared phosphors belong to the perovskite structure with the space group of R 3 ‾ (No.148). The calculated energy gap value of Mg 2 InSbO 6 is ~1.788 eV. Emission spectrum of the Mg 2 InSbO 6 :0.3%Mn 4+ was obtained under 301 nm excitation, which centered 665 nm due to the 2 E g → 4 A 2g transition. The optimum concentration of Mg 2 InSbO 6 : x Mn 4+ is confirmed to 0.3% mol, and the concentration quenching effect is ascribed to the dipole–dipole interaction. The relative temperature-dependent PL spectra demonstrate that phosphors possess commendable repeatability and high activation energy . The chromaticity shift diagram shows the phosphors have good resistance of color drifting. The Mg 2 InSbO 6 :0.3%Mn 4+ phosphor has a high color purity of 99.8%. Furthermore, a red light-emitting diode is fabricated with Mg 2 InSbO 6 :0.3%Mn 4+ phosphor and a 365 nm near-ultraviolet chip. The emission spectrum of the red LED is perfectly overlapped with plant pigments (chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b ) absorption spectrum . Thus, Mn 4+ -activated Mg 2 InSbO 6 :Mn 4+ phosphors have the potential to apply in plant-cultivation LEDs.

A bright and moisture-resistant red-emitting Lu3Al5O12:Mn4+,Mg2+ garnet phosphor for high-quality phosphor-converted white LEDs

Yibo Chen,Kuanglun Wu,Jin He,Zhengbin Tang,Jianxin Shi,Yiqin Xu,Zhao-Qing Liu

The rational and delicate synthesis of Mn4+ activated red-emitting oxide phosphors with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and photo-stability for developing high-quality w-LEDs still remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a simultaneous ion co-substitution design strategy to synthesize a red-emitting Lu3Al5O12:Mn4+,Mg2+ garnet phosphor delicately with the assistance of MgF2. The Mn4+ activated garnet phosphor exhibits superior moisture resistance properties and high PLQY (ca. 72.41%), which emits a bright and narrow-band red light peaking at ∼670 nm due to the 2E–4A2 spin-forbidden transition of Mn4+ upon UV excitation. Remarkably, MgF2 as a charge compensator & flux can not only accelerate the solid state reaction, but also greatly improve the emission intensity. Furthermore, by employing the as-prepared Lu3Al5O12:Mn4+,Mg2+ as a red component, we fabricate a warm w-LED with a high color rendering index (Ra = 81.4) and low color temperature (CCT = 4766 K) based on a UV chip and commercial blue and yellow phosphors.

Sb3+-Activated 0D Cs3LuCl6: A Cyan–Green Phosphor with Near-Unity Quantum Yield for Ultrahigh-CRI Full-Spectrum White LEDs

Wenlong Ma,Die Xu,Long Zhao,Tongtong Xuan,Xuejiao Wang,Rong-Jun Xie,Xiaojun Wang

Overcoming the long-standing “cyan gap” remains a critical challenge in the development of full-spectrum white light-emitting diodes (wLEDs). In this work, a 0D cyan–green-emitting phosphor, Cs 3 LuCl 6 : Sb 3+ , synthesized via a facile HCl-assisted solid-state method is presented. Under 365 nm excitation, Cs 3 LuCl 6 : Sb 3+ exhibits a broad emission band centered at 525 nm with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ≈105 nm and an exceptional photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 99%. Hybrid density functional theory calculations reveal that Sb 3+ incorporation narrows the bandgap from 5.96 to 3.75 eV and induces strong hybridization among Sb 5s, Cl 3p, and Lu 5d orbitals, promoting the formation and radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence measurements confirm robust thermal stability, with 82% of the emission intensity retained at 398 K and an activation energy of 0.3488 eV. When integrated with BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ (blue) and K 2 SiF 6 :Mn 4+ (red) on a 365 nm UV LED chip, the fabricated wLEDs achieve a high color rendering index (CRI) of 94 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5565 K. These results establish Cs 3 LuCl 6 : Sb 3+ as a highly promising cyan–green phosphor for full-spectrum wLEDs.

A Blue Light–Excited Broadband Chartreuse-Emitting LuMg2Al3Si2O12:Ce3+ Garnet Phosphor With High Thermal Stability for High-Performance White LEDs

Fangyu Zhu,Kai Jia,Yixi Guo,Yuqiang Lan,Baoling Wang,Xiujun Deng,Haidong Ju

High-brightness and thermally stable chartreuse-emitting phosphors are highly desirable for high-quality phosphor-converted white light–emitting diodes (pc-LEDs). In this article, a new chartreuse phosphor, Lu (1- x ) Mg 2 Al 3 Si 2 O 12 : x Ce 3+ (LMASO: x Ce 3+ ), was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement reveal that LMASO phosphors crystallize in the cubic system (Ia 3 ¯ $$ \overline{3} $$ 3 − $$ \overline{3} $$ d). The optimal doping concentration of Ce 3+ in LMASO is 10 mol%, which is higher than that of other Ce 3+ -doped garnet phosphors. Its broad excitation band peaking at 429 nm matches well with the emission from commercial blue LED chips. Under 429 nm excitation, the LMASO:Ce 3+ phosphor exhibits a wide asymmetric emission band ranging from 450 to 650 nm. The high activation energy (0.334 eV) indicates a good thermal quenching resistance. A white LED device was fabricated by combining a 450nm blue LED chip with the LMASO:0.10Ce 3+ chartreuse phosphor and a commercial CaAlSiN 3 :Eu 2+ red phosphor. This device emits bright warm-white light with excellent CIE color coordinates (0.3978, 0.3959), a low correlated color temperature (CCT = 3500 K) and a high color rendering index (Ra = 95.7). The results demonstrate that LMASO:Ce 3+ phosphor is a promising candidate for pc-LEDs.
