Herein, inspired by previous reports on the electrochemical reduction of Al in diverse electrolyte systems, we describe a novel Al-containing solvate ionic liquid (2:1 (mol/mol) mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and AlCl3) that allows low-temperature electrochemical deposition of Al and features the advantages of low cost, ease of preparation, and high electrochemical stability. Electrodeposition of Al-Li alloy and Li can also be realized in this system. Additionally, the above ionic liquid exhibited a saturated vapor pressure of 0.0012 kPa and a conductivity of 1.32 mS/cm at 298 K, which was acceptable for practical applications. To elucidate the electrochemical deposition mechanism, the ionic components of the 2:1 EC/AlCl3 system were characterized by a range of instrumental analysis techniques and theoretical calculations, and Lewis-acidic cations were identified as the electroactive species for Al electrodeposition. Notably, an Al-Li alloy could be obtained by co-deposition in the new solvate ionic liquid, and Li metal could also be electrodeposited on a high-purity Al plate in the form of Al4Li9 and Li3Al2 under ambient conditions using LiCl as a Li source. Al-containing solvate ionic liquids, which to an extent evolved from organic-salts, are of increasing interest. They are expected to gain more attention in the field of electrochemical metallurgy of active metals, due to their higher tunability and lower price.

Li metal is a promising anode material for all-solid-state batteries, owing to its high specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, direct contact of Li metal with most solid-state electrolytes induces severe side reactions that can lead to dendrite formation and short circuits. Moreover, Li metal is unstable when exposed to air, leading to stringent processing requirements. Herein, it is reported that the Li 3 PS 4 /Li interface in all-solid-state batteries can be stabilized by an air-stable Li x SiS y protection layer that is formed in situ on the surface of Li metal through a solution-based method. Highly stable Li cycling for over 2000 h in symmetrical cells and a lifetime of over 100 cycles can be achieved for an all-solid-state LiCoO 2 /Li 3 PS 4 /Li cell. Synchrotron-based high energy X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in-depth analysis demonstrates the distribution of different components within the protection layer. The in situ formation of an electronically insulating Li x SiS y protection layer with highly ionic conductivity provides an effective way to prevent Li dendrite formation in high-energy all-solid-state Li metal batteries.

A series of Li-rich Mn-based layered material Li1.2Ni0.13Co0.13Mn0.54O2 (LMR) with different particle sizes and particle-size distributions (PSDs) have been successfully synthesized via a combustion method using different manganese sources. The particle size of the N-LMR material prepared using Mn(NO3)2·4H2O as the manganese source is the smallest, and its PSD range is the narrowest among all of the samples. The unique particle size and PSD have a great influence on the electrochemical kinetics of Li-ion extraction/insertion reactions, leading to enhanced electrochemical performance when used as a cathode material for both the half and full Li-ion cells, especially the specific charge capacity at high current rates. The value of the charge specific capacity will determine the state of charge at the initial discharge stage and then influence the discharge process of these Li-rich Mn-based oxides. The N-LMR electrode delivers an initial discharge capacity of 309.2 mA h g–1 at 0.1C, and the specific capacity can reach up to 208.1 mA h g–1 at 1C. After 140 cycles, the electrode can still maintain 95.6% of its initial specific capacity at 1C. Moreover, the material displays a superior high-temperature lithium storage property at 55 °C and the full cells using N-LMR as the cathode material also show a much better electrochemical performance.

Increasing the cut-off voltage of cathodes can improve the energy density of Li||LiCoO 2 batteries. However, the electrolyte and cathode suffer from oxidation and deterioration at high voltage, respectively, which lead to rapid battery degradation. Herein, a uniform, highly Li + conductive cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) is constructed by using bis-(benzenesulfonyl)imide (BBSI) as an additive to stabilize Li||LiCoO 2 batteries at 4.6 cut-off voltage with superior cycling and high-rate performance. Such a CEI is comprised of LiF and conductive Li + moieties (e.g., Li 2 S and Li 3 N), which can improve the Li + migration, alleviate cathode degradation, and other secondary degradation factors caused by uneven local Li + intercalation/deintercalation. As expected, Li||LiCoO 2 batteries with a 1% BBSI-containing electrolyte sustain 81.30% of initial capacity after 300 cycles at 0.5C, and 88.27% of initial capacity even after 500 cycles at 2C/3C.

This study investigates the synthesis, characterization and adsorption efficiency of PDMS@Li/ZnAl-LDH as a potential adsorbent for lithium recovery from Salt Lake brine with a high Mg/Li ratio. Synthesized via co-precipitation, the adsorbent exhibited excellent stability across a wide range of pH and temperature, along with a well-defined layered crystalline structure. The maximum adsorption capacity of Li + is 14.1 mg/g in lithium brine and 9.4 mg/g in the Qarhan Salt Lake's brine with impressive selectivity, as indicated by separation factors of 215, 838 and 175 for Li + /K + , Li + /Na + and Li + /Mg 2+ , respectively. Microspheres formed by Li/ZnAl-LDH in ultra-pure water exhibited tunable pore size and porosity as compared to Li/Al-LDH, which enhanced the Li + adsorption. Cyclic adsorption and zinc dissolution tests confirmed the adsorbent's excellent reusability with no significant structural degradation. Furthermore, using NaAlO 2 as a precursor reduces cost, making Li/ZnAl-LDH a viable option for large-scale lithium recovery. This work presents a sustainable, cost-effective strategy for lithium recovery with potential industrial applications.

Nanofiltration membranes with high selectivity and long-term stability for magnesium and lithium ions are crucial to efficiently enriching lithium resources in salt lake brines. Herein, a nano-gradient-structured nanofiltration membrane was fabricated, in which PEI with different molecular weights and TMC were utilized in a gradient interfacial polymerization process to construct the target active layer. Via this facile strategy, the grafting density of PEI and the amino group introduced were properly adjusted, and the pore size distribution and surface charge of the active layer were optimized. The fabricated active layer simultaneously possesses sub-nanometer pore size with a modified gradient structure and high interfacial positive charges, which can accurately screen lithium and magnesium. The successful grafting of secondary PEI and the high positive charge and continuity of the active layer have been demonstrated. After 150 hour operation (Mg/Li ratio of 50), PEI-70000/PA/PES nanofiltration membrane achieved a lithium‑magnesium separation factor (S Li/Mg ) as high as 150 while maintaining the stable permeation flux of approximately 20 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·MPa −1 , and the terminal Mg/Li ratio on the permeable side falls to 0.32, which exhibits significant potential for extracting Li from salt lake brines with high Mg/Li ratio with promising long-term stability.

Developing an artificial solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) with high Li ion flux is vital to improve the cycling stability of lithium metal batteries, especially under a high rate. In this work, a novel artificial SEI film was prepared via in situ deposition of a lithium-doped cesium lead chloride perovskite (Li–CsPbCl3). Benefiting from its ultra-high thickness (0.45 μm), high mechanical modulus (5.9 GPa), high lithium-ion migration number (0.57), and unique highly oriented framework, the Li–CsPbCl3 SEI film could promote the rapid transport and uniform deposition of lithium ions, enhancing the stability of lithium deposition and stripping. As a result, Li/Li symmetric cells based on the Li–CsPbCl3 protective film could cycle stably for 1300 hours under high current density of 10 mA cm−2. In addition, the Li/LiFePO4 battery using the Li–CsPbCl3 SEI film showed an impressive cycling stability with a capacity retention rate of up to 91.4% after 230 cycles at a high current rate of 3C.

Lithium, a critical metal for green energy storage, is in surging global demand, yet its extraction from salt-lake brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratios faces severe technical and ecological challenges ( e.g. , low selectivity, acid washing-induced environmental damage). Herein, a bio-inspired Li + sieve membrane was developed by in situ growing Li–Al layered double hydroxide (Li/Al-LDH) on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) supports, addressing the above bottlenecks for sustainable Li-extraction from original brines. Integrated into a flat-sheet membrane module, the LDHs@PAN membrane exhibited exceptional Li-extraction performance with high Li + selectivity, rapid adsorption kinetics, and outstanding regenerability in real high Mg 2+ /Li + brine. The in situ grown LDHs form a robust organic-inorganic interface, which not only enhances the areal adsorption capacity and cycling stability but also enables fast on-site reconstruction of the degraded membrane. Notably, the membrane realizes Li + desorption via simple water washing (no acid usage), protecting the fragile ecological environment of salt-lake areas. This work provides an eco-friendly and scalable strategy for lithium recovery from original brine, supporting the sustainable supply of lithium for green energy systems and overcoming the fundamental limitations of industrial Al-based absorbents.

A lithium metal anode (LMA) is appealing due to its high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. Unfortunately, the practical application of LMAs is restricted by the uncontrollable Li dendrite growth and tremendous volume change. Herein, lithiophilic honeycomb-like layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet arrays supported on a flexible carbon cloth (NiMn-LDHs NAs@CC) are synthesized as the Li host to spatially confine the Li deposition, guiding Li growth via a conformal and uniform manner. First, the lithiophilic NiMn-LDHs NAs as nucleation seeds render the CC substance outstanding lithiophilicity and reduce the nucleation barrier. The hierarchical honeycomb-like structure then directs the oriented Li deposition and provides an open channel for fast ion transport. Finally, the CC skeleton offers a high specific surface for decreasing the inhomogeneous distribution of the current density and enough space for alleviating the volume variations, synergistically inhibiting the dendritic Li growth. As a consequence, the NiMn-LDHs NAs@CC symmetric cell exhibits a low overpotential of less than 17 mV at 2 mA cm–2 and a long lifespan of 2100 h at 3 mA cm–2. In addition, when paired with the LiNiCoMnO2 (NCM111) cathode, the NiMn-LDHs NAs@CC@Li full cell presents enhanced cycling stability and rate capability in comparison to the CC@Li full cell, implying the great potential of the NiMn-LDHs NAs@CC in stabilizing the LMA.

This paper proposes a strategy to fabricate surface activated polyethylene (PE)-supported gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with high ion transport ability, excellent electrolyte retention and mechanical properties to stabilize lithium (Li)-metal anodes. The inert outer and inner pore surface activation of polyethylene is demonstrated by coating an ultrathin zirconium oxide nanocrystal (ZrO 2 )/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) composite layer through a simple layer by layer (LBL) assembly method prior to the in situ polymerization. It is found that the activation layer may improve the Li + ion transference number and induce the formation of GPE with a gradient structure by the interaction with the initiator system, giving rise to higher ion transport ability of final GPE. On the other hand, the GPE using the activated PE separator as support improves the Li/electrolyte interfacial stability during storage and repeated lithium plating/stripping cycling. A stable voltage profile with cycling for more than 800 h in a Li/Li symmetric cell was obtained by using surface activated PE-supported GPE. When it is assembled into the cells with metallic lithium anodes and lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ) cathodes, the cells show excellent rate capability and cycling performance, as well as effective dendrite inhibition.

Li-rich layered composite Li[Li 0.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 ]O 2 is prepared by a novel approach in which carbon felt acts as a carrier for synthesis reaction . The as-prepared material is characterized by SEM, ICP and XRD , its electrochemical performance is also examined with galvanostatic charge/discharge and CV measurements. It is showed that the facile process controls effectively the particle growth (in size around 100–200 nm) of the composite and its chemical composition . The as-prepared material shows a high initial discharge capacity about 288 mAh g −1 when charged to 4.8 V, and a retained value of 246.8 mAh g −1 in the 40th cycle. The crystalline structure of the composite is simulated further by Material Studio. It is revealed that the composite has a compatible layer structure merged by Li 2 MnO 3 and LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 , which makes substantial contribution to the cycleability of the electrode. In addition, the lithiation/delithiaion properties including charge transfer resistance and lithium ion diffusion coefficient are studied with electrochemical impedance spectra.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) could effectively enhance energy density and safety of Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-SPEs exhibit excellent properties at elevated temperature (>70 °C), while their insufficient ionic conduction at room temperature yields nonnegligible mass transfer polarization. Such a polarization of SPEs in LMBs will lead to huge capacity loss, affect rate performance, cause Li dendrite growth that initiates safety problems, and significantly limit the battery lifespan. Herein, we have developed a method for improving the transfer efficacy of Li+ in PEO electrolyte through the construction of composite PEO with Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO)/fluorinated carbonate (FEC) and succinonitrile (SN) (denoted as PLFS). By means of the decomposition reaction between LLZTO and FEC, interfacial compatibility between LLZTO and PEO has been improved, and fluorinated oligomers generated in the decomposition of FEC can simultaneously fix anions by the ‘fluorous effect’. Furthermore, SN with a lower Gutmann donor number is used to composite with PEO/FEC/LLZTO to weaken the strong complexation between Li+ and PEO. The construction of a fast Li+ transfer channel as well as the weakened interaction of Li+ to PEO is achieved, which facilitates the migration of Li+ of PEO-SPEs. Benefiting from the above design, composite PLFS-SPEs present an excellent Li+ transfer efficacy that is 41 times higher than that of pure PEO-SPEs, and significantly enhances rate performance and cycling life of LMBs. The Li/PLFS-SPEs/Li symmetric battery demonstrates a lifespan of more than 1100 h at room temperature. When PLFS-SPEs are applied in LMBs, the Li/PLFS-SPEs/LiFePO4 battery can maintain nearly 80% of its initial capacity after 700 cycles at 1C.
