Background This study aimed to evaluate the properties and functions of polysaccharide-based porous microsphere (PPM) for drug delivery, as well as its inhibitory effect on malignant tumors. Materials and Methods PPM was prepared using the inverse emulsion polymerization method. FT-IR measurements were conducted to measure the wavenumber of PPM. Particle size distribution was tested with a particle analyzer, and surface morphologies of PPM were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Dialysis method, Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8), and cell apoptosis analysis were adopted to evaluate the drug release, cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of mitomycin-C (MMC), respectively. Finally, an in vivo study was performed in C57BL/6 mice to confirm the function of MMC-loaded PPM on tumor growth. Results FT-IR spectra proved the successful preparation of MMC-loaded PPM. PPM had an average size of 25.90 ± 0.34 μm and then increased to 30.10 ± 0.20 μm after drug loading. Under SEM, the surface morphology was lotus seedpod surface-like, with macropits on the surface and micropores in macropits. Compared with the free MMC group, MMC-loaded PPM exhibited a delayed drug release rate in a pH-dependent manner and higher cell viability. Flow cytometry results showed that the cell apoptosis in the PPM/MMC group was lower than that in the free MMC group. In vivo experiment revealed the inhibitory efficacy of MMC-loaded PPM on malignant tumors. Conclusion In summary, MMC-loaded PPM exhibited favorable surface morphology, sustained drug release ability, nontoxicity and excellent biocompatibility, suggesting that PPM might be a potential drug carrier for tumor treatment.

Rapid water absorption rate has become a bottleneck that limits ultrarapid hemostatic performance of hemostatic microspheres. Herein, we reported a “lotus seedpod surface-like” polysaccharide hemostatic microsphere (PHM) with “macropits on surface” morphology and “micropores in macropits” structure. Unique macropits on surface can promote the water absorption rate because they are advantageous to quickly guide blood into the micropores. Special micropores are internally connected with each other, which endows PHM4 with high water absorption ratio. During the process of blood entering the micropores from micropits, the pore size decreases gradually. In this way, blood clotting factors could be rapidly concentrated. PHM4 showed the highest water absorption rate (40.7 mL/s/cm2) and rapid hemostatic property in vivo (hemostatic time shortened from 210 to 45 s). Lotus seedpod surface-like PHMs are believed to have further clinical application as an effective hemostasis.

Herein, a cationic hydrogel microsphere (CHMS) was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization and freeze-drying and was applied to the adsorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solution. Morphological characterization shows that there are lots of folds and pores on the surface of CHMS with a unique petal-like appearance. According to the chemical structure analysis, CHMS contains plenty of functional groups such as amine and hydroxyl groups. These features give CHMS a larger specific surface area, faster adsorption rate, and higher adsorption capacity than the conventional cationic hydrogel microparticle (CHMP) adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(VI) in water by CHMS is mainly based on the combination of electrostatic adsorption and redox reaction, with the electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine and Cr(VI) serving as the predominant adsorption mechanism. Experimental results reveal that CHMS can efficiently remove Cr(VI) from simulated wastewater in both batch and continuous adsorption modes, which is primarily due to its distinctive surface morphology and rich functional groups. Furthermore, the common coexisting metal ions in Cr(VI)-containing wastewater have no substantial negative influence on the adsorption. Therefore, it can be concluded that CHMS has a promising application prospect in the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Dynamic alterations in metal ion concentrations are observed in the pathological process of spinal cord injury (SCI). Hence, strategically supplying metal ions in a phase-adapted manner is promising to facilitate injured spinal cord repair by preventing pathological damage. To achieve this, a chimeric hydrogel microsphere with Mg 2+ -crosslinked methacrylate gelatin as the "shell" and Zn 2+ -loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) as the "core" was designed. The chimeric microspheres allow continuous delivery of Mg 2+ or Zn 2+ at the exact required phase in SCI pathological process. Early release of Mg 2+ reduced inflammation by diminishing the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines due to changes in macrophage polarization, which further suppressed scar formation to create an ideal space for neural regeneration. The subsequently released Zn 2+ at the late phase effectively promoted neural cell proliferation and regeneration, which was accompanied by activation of mature neurons, interneurons, and motor neurons, leading to significant behavioral recovery. Thus, this study underscores the critical role of metal ions at different phases of injured spinal cord repair and describes the construction of an injectable chimeric hydrogel microsphere carrying distinct metal ions with a core-shell structure. Chimeric microspheres overcome the discrepancy between the inflammatory response and neural regeneration and are a promising therapeutic strategy for injured spinal cord repair.

Synthesizing high-value-added products through the chemical conversion of CO 2 offers not only environmental benefits but also the potential for significant economic value. The development of practical catalyst is paramount to advancing CO 2 conversion and the synthesis of high-value chemicals. In this context, we present the fabrication of triazine and urea-constructed polyurea microsphere (TUC-PUMS) as a promising catalyst for converting CO 2 into cyclic carbonates using an enhanced dispersion polymerization method. Microscopic observations reveal that TUC-PUMS manifest as uniform microspheres with diameters ranging from 2 to 8 μm, suitable size for suspended bed or fluidized bed. Analytical techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) spectra confirm the chemical structure of TUC-PUMS. By integrating triazine and urea groups, TUC-PUMS exhibits excellent catalytic activity for CO 2 conversion into cyclic carbonates under mild conditions when combined with tetrabutylammonium iodide. The achieved yield and selectivity approach 100 %, as well as excellent stability and versatility. The simultaneous integration of multiple functional groups, coupled with precise control over spherical morphology and microscopic size, enhances the competitiveness of TUC-PUMS as a promising catalyst for CO 2 conversion.

Temperature is one of the most important factors driving cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CHABs). However, existing algicide designs rarely consider the influence of temperature on algal growth. Novel temperature-responsive sustained-release microspheres (T-SRMs) of anti-algal 5,4′-dihydroxyflavone (DHF) were designed using n -heptadecane as the temperature-responsive material, which can adjust DHF release behavior in response to temperature. Compared to DHF direct application, T-SRMs showed higher inhibition rates against Microcystis aeruginosa and sustained inhibitory activity at various temperatures (15-25 °C). The theoretical inhibition time of T-SRMs substantially exceeds that of conventional SRMs, with the potential to cover the entire CHABs outbreak period and extend the duration of validity. T-SRMs can accurately regulate DHF release rate based on water temperature. When the temperature is higher than the melting point of n -heptadecane (22 °C), the phase transition of heptadecane significantly promotes the DHF release rate. Moreover, salinity had no significant effect on the DHF release behavior, and the temperature-responsive materials can be adjusted to linearly regulate the release of DHF, which is favorable for the wide application of T-SRMs in freshwater, brackish and salt waters with flexible temperature windows. In addition, the T-SRMs had no apparent toxic effects on Chlorella vulgaris, Daphnia magna and Danio rerio . Our study has an important scientific significance to achieve a more intelligent, accurate and efficient control of CHABs.

Current injectable fillers often suffer from a transient efficacy and insufficient early stage improvement. To address this, we developed a composite dermal filler consisting of hyaluronic acid (HA) and poly-L-lactic acid-methoxypolyethyleneglycol (PLLA-mPEG) microspheres with a unique fibrous porous structure. This distinctive architecture enabled a rapid initial release of lactic acid, effectively accelerating early cell proliferation and fundamentally overcoming the challenge of poor initial skin improvement. In a rat model, the composite filler demonstrated superior performance by orchestrating a pro-regenerative microenvironment, eliciting controlled macrophage infiltration, upregulating TGF-β expression, and significantly stimulating endogenous collagen regeneration, which leads to sustained volume restoration. By ingeniously coupling the instant filling effect of HA with the structurally enhanced bioactive function of PLLA-mPEG microspheres, this composite filler represents a breakthrough strategy that synchronizes immediate correction with long-term tissue remodeling, holding great promise for treating skin laxity and soft tissue defects.

Applying fireproof coatings to building structures can effectively reduce temperature increases and delay structural damage during a fire, thereby extending evacuation time and improving building safety. However, flame-retardant functionality alone is no longer sufficient. This study employed a P/Si composite halogen-free flame retardant, KHDOPO, to surface-modify hollow glass microsphere(HGM) to enhance its dispersibility, compatibility, and flame-retardant properties in the coating. The modified HGM (KHGM) was integrated into an epoxy resin (EP) coating using covalent modification and in-situ dispersion techniques. This approach produced a coating with outstanding thermal insulation and flame-retardant characteristics. Results demonstrated that the KHGM/KHDOPO/EP coating exhibited optimal thermal insulation and maintained excellent flame retardancy, achieving a UL-94 V-0 rating. In testing, its back temperature reached 354 °C, which is 55% of that of the EP coating and 90 °C lower than that of the unmodified HGM. The thermal conductivity at room temperature was 44% lower than that of EP. Observed in the gaseous and condensed phases, the synergistic effects have improved flame retardancy efficiency and reinforced the protective char layer, evidenced by a low Raman I D /I G value of 2.61. During the cone calorimetry test, the PHRR value registered at 517.75 kW/m 2 , marking a 58.9% reduction compared to the unmodified coating. In summary, the coating containing 5% surface-modified HGM demonstrates significant potential in the field of safety protection.

To address the challenges on repair of articular cartilage defects in clinic, drug-loaded bioactive hydrogels remain desirable for cartilage support and simulate the cellular microenvironment. However, the reconstruction of cartilage through all-in-one advanced drug delivery hydrogel system is still limited. Herein, we fabricated biocompatible PVA-SF hydrogel composites embedding dual-drug loaded recombinant human collagen microspheres (MS), which were engineered to internally encapsulate Kartogenin (KGN) and externally conjugated Transforming Growth Factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) via activated heparin. The optimized hydrogel composite (PS-2MS@K-T) loaded with 2 wt% MS, exhibited favorable porous architecture with enhanced compressive strength of 0.59 MPa and Young's modulus of 1.28 MPa, alongside fatigue resistance (>87% retention). This hierarchical structure could establish dual-barrier system for long-term controllable drug release up to >28 days. In vitro studies indicated compatibility of hydrogel composites to support robust cell activity and proliferation. The sustained co-delivery of KGN and TGF-β1 could orchestrate synergistic effect, to upregulate expression of chondrogenic gene, whereas simultaneously suppressing the hypertrophic gene induced by TGF-β1. This cell-free platform provides a promising strategy for functional cartilage regeneration by combining mechanical support, controlled drug release, and biomimetic signaling.

This study presents the experimental realization of a microsphere laser resonator designed to operate within the approximate wavelength range of 1.2 μm and 2.0 μm. This resonator, employing a Ho 3+ -doped fluoroaluminate glass microsphere, was stimulated by a 1150 nm laser, marking the first demonstration of its kind. The observed laser emissions at ∼1.2 μm and ∼2.0 μm were ascribed to the transitions of Ho 3+ ions, specifically 5 I 6 → 5 I 8 and 5 I 7 → 5 I 8 , respectively. The fabrication of the microsphere, possessing a characteristic diameter of approximately 50 μm, entailed the controlled melting of a fluoroaluminate glass filament through the application of a focused CO 2 laser beam. Concurrently, a tapered fiber with a waist diameter of ∼2 μm was created by subjecting a standard silica single-mode fiber to a process of controlled heating and stretching. The findings of this investigation suggest promising prospects for the development of multi-wavelength lasers utilizing fluoroaluminate glass microspheres, particularly in intricate environmental settings.

Infectious scald is recognized as a life-threatening concern in clinical due to easy infection and hard recovery. Exosomes possess cell migration, proliferation and angiogenesis under the containing rich growths factors, which may be a possibility for the treatment of scald chronic wounds. However, the instability and release issues of exosomes limits the storage and therapeutic efficacy. Herein, in this study, exosomes were successfully encapsulated calcium alginate microspheres, effectively avoiding the leakage and inactivation of exosomes. Meanwhile, composite hydrogel (HS-QAF-AgNPs) was fabricated with and quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (Q-CMC), aldehyde group-modified alginate (ASA) with assisted crosslinking of ferric ion and dopped nano silver (AgNPs). The incorporation of exo-CAMs into the hydrogel protects the exosomes from harsh environmental conditions and extends their diffusion time, thereby guaranteeing a better therapeutic effect. Q-CMC and AgNPs altogether endow the hydrogel system with an inherent antibacterial effect against pathogenic microorganisms. In vitro and in vivo investigations demonstrated that the HS-QAF-AgNPs hydrogel was cytocompatibility, possessed antibacterial and hemostatic properties, promoted cell migration and cell proliferation, stimulated angiogenesis, regulated inflammatory response, delayed apoptosis, enhanced collagen deposition and accelerated wound closure. Thus, the multifunctional HS-QAF-AgNPs hydrogel dressing is expected to be a promising candidate for the treatment of severe scalds. There is an urgent need to develop multifunctional wound dressings that can coordinate cell migration, proliferation, apoptosis, collagen formation and remodeling, alongside inflammation and angiogenesis to promote skin wound closure.

Cellular senescence plays a crucial role in the progression of various diseases, and targeting senescence is a potential therapeutic strategy for osteoarthritis (OA). However, the complex biomechanical environment surrounding chondrocytes significantly affects their senescence process. Currently, few biomaterials are available that have the ability to modulate stresses and counteract chondrocyte senescence. In this study, we used cationic liposomes as the core of the crosslinked structure of the hydrogel network through imine bonding to construct a high-mobility network hydrogel microsphere system (Res@Lipo@HMs). The deformability of liposomes endowed mobility to the crosslinked structure of the hydrogel network. This system not only enhanced joint lubrication through a rolling mechanism but also distributed mechanical stress on chondrocytes by increasing the elastic deformation capacity of the microspheres. Moreover, this approach delayed chondrocyte senescence, improved chondrocyte physiological function, and slowed down OA progression by enhancing mitochondrial function and inhibiting senescence pathways. This study offers new insights into antisenescence strategies for chondrocyte therapy.
