Metal oxides, as a popular group of ozonation catalyst, are usually synthesized with physiochemical protocols involving hazardous materials and extreme conditions. In this study, a biological method was studied with manganese oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. to synthesize multi-metal oxides consisting of iron, manganese, and cobalt (Bio-FeMnCoOx) to catalyze ozonation for the first time. It was found that the dosage of cobalt, the cultivation time, and the polishing methods could significantly impact the catalytic activities of degrading benzotriazole as a model. The second-order degrading kinetic constant with optimized Bio-FeMnCoOx was 4.8 times that with the physiochemically synthesized peer. The activity of Bio-FeMnCoOx was compared with other reported catalysts in terms of Rct value. The quenching tests and EPR spectra indicated the participation of hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen. The study demonstrates the great potential of biosynthesis as a green protocol for preparing metal oxides to efficiently catalyze ozonation.

Designing and synthesizing high-activity, durable, and low-cost catalysts for the electrochemically transformation of water to hydrogen are vitally important to future energy systems . Herein, a simple but effective strategy for manganese-metal-heteroatom doping is adopted to intrinsically elevate the electrocatalytic activities of SnS 2 nanosheets by a facile two steps hydrothermal-sulfurization approach. Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution (HER) performance of Mn–SnS 2 nanosheets grown on 3D nickel foam (Mn–SnS 2 /NF) is efficiently optimized since the dopants and defects endow the Mn–SnS 2 /NF vast active sites. An overpotential as low as 71 mV is required to drive a current density of 10 mA/cm 2 with a low Tafel slope of 72 mV dec −1 in alkaline environment (1 M KOH). In addition, the Mn–SnS 2 /NF exhibits prominent stability in 1 M KOH electrolyte, which is an indispensable index for the potential HER electrocatalysts . The present work demonstrates that the heteroatom manganese doping strategy renders a meaningful route for synthesizing cost-efficient HER electrocatalysts in alkaline condition.

Mn/TiO2 catalysts were synthesized using a deposition–precipitation method. Ru-doped Mn/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by an incipient-wetness impregnation method. To investigate the interaction between Ru and Mn species, the catalytic performance of Mn/TiO2 and Ru–Mn/TiO2 catalysts in the catalytic oxidation of chlorobenzene (CB) was evaluated. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, XPS, EPR, H2-TPR, O2-TPD and so on. The results showed that the 0.8% Ru-10% Mn/TiO2 catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity with 99% CB conversion at 250 °C and showed an excellent CO2 yield (95% at 300 °C) and stability. In comparison with the 10% Mn/TiO2 catalyst, the T90 of the Ru–Mn/TiO2 catalyst decreased by 60 °C, which was attributed to the interaction between Ru and Mn species at the interfaces of Ru/Mn. The Ru species increased the concentration of Mn4+ and Ru4+ and reduced the H2 reduction temperature, which was conducive to improving the redox performance of the catalysts. Ru species were highly dispersed on the Mn/TiO2 catalyst surfaces, forming a large number of Ru/Mn interfaces. The interaction between Ru and Mn species at the interfaces of Ru/Mn promoted the formation of oxygen vacancies and surface reactive oxygen species, thus enhancing the catalytic activity.

In order to fully exploit the potential of magnetic biochar-based persulfate (PS) systems, Mn was utilized to modify the magnetic biochar-based catalysts through impregnation-pyrolysis method. Taking metronidazole (MNZ), a typical antifungal drug, as the target contaminant, the reactivity of the synthesized magnetic biochar (MMBC) catalyst was evaluated. The degradation efficiency of MNZ in MMBC/persulfate system was 95.6%, which was 13.0 times higher than that in MBC/PS system. The characterization experiments confirmed the degradation of metronidazole by surface binding free radicals, the ·OH and 1O2 played the key role in remove of MNZ in the system of MMBC/PS. Physicochemical characterization, Fe(II) semi-quantitative analysis and masking experiments confirmed that the doping of MBC with Mn increased its Fe(II) content (43.0 mg/g), approximately 7.8 times higher than that of pristine MBC. The increase of Fe(II) content in MBC is the key reason to improve the optimization of MBC modified with Mn. Simultaneously, both Fe(II) and Mn(II) were the key components of PS activation by magnetic biochar. This paper presents a method to optimize the high efficiency of PS activation by magnetic biochar.

H/F substitution drives the coordination reconstruction of Mn 2+ in hybrid chlorides. • Isolated [MnCl 4 ] 2- tetrahedra change to face-sharing [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] 5- units. • The four-to-six coordination change enables green-to-red emission centered at 634 nm. • The fluorinated non-centrosymmetric crystal exhibits phase-transition and piezoelectric responses. Regulation of the Mn 2+ coordination environment is an effective approach for tuning the luminescence of Mn-based hybrid halides. However, the use of H/F substitution on organic cations to regulate the coordination environment of Mn 2+ and thereby tune the emission color remains rarely explored. In this work, H/F substitution was introduced into the piperidinium cation, driving the transformation of Mn-Cl coordination units from four-coordinate to six-coordinate structures and yielding the zero-dimensional hybrid chloride (4-F-Hpip) 5 [Mn 2 Cl 9 ]. This material crystallizes in the chiral non-centrosymmetric P 4 1 2 1 2 space group and contains face-sharing dinuclear [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] 5- units with octahedrally coordinated Mn 2+ . The resulting ligand-field change gives rise to broad red emission centered at 634 nm, while the compound also exhibits a reversible phase transition. In addition, a flexible PBAT composite film containing 10 wt% (4-F-Hpip) 5 [Mn 2 Cl 9 ] generates an open-circuit voltage of approximately 4.9 V. Its luminescent and piezoelectric responses were further integrated into a conceptual dual-input information encryption scheme. This work establishes H/F substitution as an effective cation engineering strategy for regulating Mn 2+ coordination and luminescence in hybrid manganese halides. Magnetic nanoparticles were one of the most promising materials for targeted magnetic hyperthermia application due to the excellent magnetic properties. In this work, the magnetic nanoferrite of Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 La x Fe 2− x O 4 ( x = 0.09, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.25 and 0.3) was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. Various physical properties of samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. XRD results revealed that the lattice constants a t and crystallite size of the Mn–Zn nanoferrites decreased with increasing La 3+ content. The characteristic absorption bands of spinel nanoferrites and polyethylene glycol were observed in the FTIR spectra. FTIR results indicated that polyethylene glycol was coated on the Mn–Zn nanoferrites successfully. The saturation magnetization ( M S ), magnetic moment ( M r ) and anisotropy constant ( K ) were affected by La 3+ ion content. The M S of Mn 0.6 Zn 0.4 La 0.09 Fe 1.91 O 4 was 58 emu/g, which could be potential hyperthermia in biomedical application.

In this work, the effects of Co 2+ ions on the structural and luminescent properties of intrinsic and Mn doped CsPbCl 3 NCs were studied by using photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The undoped and Mn doped CsPbCl 3 NCs with various Co/Pb molar ratios were synthesized at 190 °C. It was found that the quantum yields of purple emissions in these CsPbCl 3 NCs were greatly enhanced up to 30% after Co 2+ ions were doped. The diffraction peaks in XRD patterns shifted to a large angle with the increase of Co/Pb molar ratio, indicating Co doping in Pb-site. Further both intrinsic and Mn doped CsPbCl 3 NCs exhibited uniform cubes with average sizes of 8–10 nm and good crystallinity after Co doping. The enhancement of purple emissions from excitons in the CsPbCl 3 NCs was related to the reduction of nonradiative defects in these NCs through Co 2+ doping.

Although Mn-doped lead halide perovskites could alleviate the environmental burden of Pb, their synthesis process suffers from intricate operations, high operating temperature, low production, or toxic strong polar solvents. Developing a simple and green route for Mn-doped halide perovskites with mass production is highly desirable for perovskite-derived applications. In this work, we developed a facile and environmental-benign synthesis strategy for large-scale preparation of Mn-doped lead halide perovskite nanocrystals . The nanocrystals were prepared via a mechano-synthesis process without organic solvents . We investigated the influence of atomic composition on their morphology, crystal structure and optical performance. Our results show that the perovskite nanocrystals have dual-emissions from the 4 T 1 to 6 A 1 transition of Mn 2+ and the excitonic recombination of perovskite hosts, respectively. The achieved Mn:CsPbX 3 nanocrystals show well-tailored color rendering when used as LED phosphors. This work presents a scalable and facile strategy for Mn-doped perovskite production without organic solvents, which promises low-cost and eco-friendly LEDs.

The efficient design of highly active, economical and stable electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline electrolyte still remains a great challenge. Herein, Mn doped Ni 2 P microflowers with porous feature directly grown on Ni foam have been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method and phosphorization treatment. By detailed analyzing X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results, it can be found that the electronic structure of Ni 2 P can be efficiently regulated by Mn doping. As expected, the Mn-doped Ni 2 P microflowers with an optimal Mn/Ni ratio of 0.053 exhibit a low overpotential of 205 mV for HER and 330 mV for OER to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, when this electrocatalyst is adopted as both the cathode and anode for overall water splitting, a current density of 10 mA cm -2 is achieved at a cell voltage as low as 1.58 V, accompanied with high stability.

In this work, a spinel cobalt doped manganese oxide catalyst with the morphology of rambutan-like hollow sphere was successfully obtained by a facile carbon sphere-templated and post-calcined strategy. Multiple strategies such as visible light assistant, Jahn-Teller (J-T) effect, Co-Mn synergistic interaction, and abundant active sites exposed have been considered together in this elaborated system. Theoretical calculation was performed to simulate and analysis the catalyst crystal properties. Visible light assistant cobalt doped manganese oxides possessed a much superior performance and the CoMn1/3 sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity. Norfloxacin (NOR) degradation paths were analyzed by HPLC-MS and the visible light-PMS activation coupling mechanism on cobalt manganese oxides was finally speculated from numerous aspects. This study not only provides the multiple regulations of catalysts from the electronic states and morphology, but also demonstrates the promising potential of various coupling techniques integrated in the contaminant remediation.

Iron-nitrogen-carbon (Fe-N-C) materials featuring Fe-N 4 moieties are promising candidates to replace commercial Pt/C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here we report a novel Mn-Fe-N/S@mC catalyst comprising atomically dispersed Fe-N 4 sites and a trace amount of Mn-N 2 S 2 sites, which are homogeneously anchored on an ordered mesoporous graphitic carbon framework. This dual-metal catalyst is realized based on the chemical conversion of self-assembled Mn 0.43 Fe 2.57 O 4 nanocrystal supracrystals, with the dual metal sites and the graphitic framework derived from nanocrystal cores and the associated capping ligands, respectively. When evaluated as electrocatalysts for the ORR, Mn-Fe-N/S@mC exhibits excellent catalytic activity in alkaline media , outperforming conventional Pt/C and most non-precious-metal catalysts reported previously. Notably, the synergistic effect of having Fe and Mn together improves the catalytic activity by a factor of ~ 5. To better understand the high efficiency of Mn doping in enhancing the activity of Fe-N 4 sites, density functional theory calculations were carried out, revealing that the synergistic interaction between the dual metal sites reduces the *OH reduction energy barrier during the oxygen reduction pathway.

Here, a Mn(III)-sealed metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosystem based on coordination between Mn(III) and porphyrin (TCPP) via a one-pot method was designed and constructed. Mn(III), as a sealer, not only quenched TCPP-based fluorescence but also inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, which made MOFs an “inert” theranostic nanoparticle. Interestingly, upon endocytosis by tumor cells, MOFs were disintegrated into Mn(II) and free TCPP by intracellular glutathione (GSH) in tumor cells, owing to redox reaction between Mn(III) and GSH. This disintegration would lead to consumption of antioxidant GSH and activated Mn(II)-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as well as TCPP-based fluorescent imaging. More importantly, such a GSH-regulated TCPP release could implement controllable ROS generation under irradiation, which avoided side effects (inflammation and damage of normal tissues). As a consequence, after unlocking by GSH, Mn(III)-sealed MOFs could significantly improve the therapeutic efficiency of photodynamic therapy by combining controlled ROS generation and GSH depletion after precise dual tumor homing.
