Hydrogen Bonding-Driven Structural Modulation in Narrowband Green-Emitting Mn2+ Hybrids for Enhanced X-ray Imaging Performance

Yongbao Xiao,Chong Wang

Zero-dimensional (0D) Mn2+-based Hybrids have attracted increasing attention as promising candidates for luminescent and scintillation materials due to their unique chemical compositions, crystal structures, and photophysical properties. However, the specific influence of hydrogen bonding, which serves as a key interaction between organic cations and the inorganic framework, has received limited investigation. In this study, two 0D Mn2+-based single crystals, [MePi]MnBr4 and [EtPi]MnBr4, were synthesized using a simple solvent to antisolvent recrystallization approach. Under 450 nm excitation, both compounds exhibit sharp green emissions attributed to the spin-forbidden d–d transitions of Mn2+. Differences in hydrogen bonding lead to distinct photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) and radioluminescence light yields (LY) between the two materials. Notably, [EtPi]MnBr4 shows a higher PLQY of 96%. When benchmarked against the commercial Lu3Al5O12:Ce3+ scintillator, [EtPi]MnBr4 achieves an estimated light yield of approximately 24110 photons MeV-1 and an X-ray detection limit of 44.66 μGy s-1. In addition, a flexible scintillation screen composed of [EtPi]MnBr4 embedded in PDMS was prepared, achieving a spatial resolution of 10 lp mm-1. These results highlight the potential of 0D Mn2+-based Hybrids as low-cost, eco-friendly, and solution-processable scintillators for multifunctional applications.

Colorimetric immunoassay via smartphone based on Mn2+-Mediated aggregation of AuNPs for convenient detection of fumonisin B1

Yao Yu,Yansong Li,Qi Zhang,Yonghong Zha,Shiying Lu,Yong Yang,Peiwu Li,Yu Zhou

Fumonisin B1 (FB1) is one of the most toxic and widely distributed subtypes of the 20 fumonisins, which has attracted much attention in food and feed safety. In this study, a convenient colorimetric immunoassay was proposed for the detection of FB1 based on Mn 2+ -mediated aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). After hydrolyzing of ascorbic acid 2-phosphate (AAP) by alkaline phosphatase (ALP), the generated ascorbic acid (AA) decomposes brown MnO 2 shell to Mn 2+ , which growth onto AuNPs and inducing the aggregation of AuNPs. The color change of the solution induced by aggregating of AuNPs can be read by smartphone to avoid subjective differences. The limit of detection (LOD) of this assay was 0.15 ng/mL and the limit of quantification (LOQ) was 0.50 ng/mL. The method has not cross-reaction with other mycotoxins . The average recoveries of FB1 in the maize flour samples ranged from 86.4 % to 110.9 %, which met the food and Drug Administration (FDA) restrictions on FBS in agricultural products. The colorimetric immunoassay can be potentially used for mycotoxin-related food safety monitoring.

8-Layer Shifted Hexagonal Perovskite Ba8MnNb6O24: Long-Range Ordering of High-Spin d5 Mn2+ Layers and Electronic Structure

Fengqiong Tao,Chaoping Liang,Xiaoming Wang,Xiaohui Li,Florence Porcher,Mathieu Allix,Fengqi Lu,Haoran Gong,Laijun Liu,Xiaojun Kuang

A new 8-layer shifted hexagonal perovskite Ba8MnNb6O24 has been synthesized in air, featuring unusual long-range B-cation ordering with single octahedral high-spin d5 Mn2+ layers separated by ∼1.9 nm within the corner-sharing octahedral d0 Nb5+ host, analogous to Ba8(Zn/Co)Nb6O24. The large size and charge differences between high-spin Mn2+ and Nb5+, as well as the out-of-center distortion of NbO6 octahedra associated with the bonding covalence and second-order Jahn–Teller effect of Nb5+, drive long-range cationic ordering, thus stabilizing Ba8MnNb6O24. The Ba8MnNb6O24 pellet exhibits a high dielectric permittivity, εr ∼ 38, and a large temperature coefficient of resonant frequency, τf ∼ 20 ppm/K, but a dielectric loss (Qf ∼ 987 GHz) and conductivity (∼10–8–10–3 S/cm within 473–1173 K) much higher than those of Ba8ZnNb6O24. Electronic structures from density functional theory calculations reveal that Ba8MnNb6O24 is a Mott insulator in contrast with the charge-transfer insulator nature of Ba8ZnNb6O24, and they confirm that the off-center distortion of Nb5+ contributes to stabilization of the 8-layer ordered shifted structure. The contrast between conductivity and dielectric loss of Ba8MnNb6O24 and Ba8ZnNb6O24 is understood based on the electronic structure that depends on high-spin d5 Mn2+ and d10 Zn2+ cations. The hopping of 3d valence electrons in high-spin Mn2+ to Nb5+ 4d conduction bands over a small gap (∼2.0 eV) makes Ba8MnNb6O24 more conductive than Ba8ZnNb6O24, where the electrons are conducted via the hopping of a lattice O 2p valence electron to the Nb5+ 4d conduction bands over a larger gap (∼3.9 eV). The high microwave dielectric loss of BMN may be mainly ascribed to the half-filled Mn 3d orbits, which is understood based on the softened infrared modes that increase the lattice vibration anharmonicity as well as the resonant spin excitation of unpaired d electrons.

Improving the Mn2+ emission and stability of CsPb(Cl/Br)3 nanocrystals by Ni2+ doping in ambient air

Zhang Rui,Yuan Yaoxin,Zhang Jianfeng,Liu Haiyun,Chen Gang,Li Kun,Hong MengQing,Zuo Wenbin,Wang Chunlan,Yang Wen,Qin Zhenxing

Mn-doped perovskite CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 nanocrystals (NCs) have been widely explored due to their unique dual-color emission characteristics, which could reduce the usage of toxic Pb and introduce the exciton emission in blue region and the stable Mn 2+ emission peak in orange-red region via energy transfer from exciton to Mn 2+ emission. Although doping high concentration Mn 2+ could increase the Mn 2+ emission, excess Mn 2+ ions would be expelled from the host perovskite lattice. Doping secondary metal Ni into the NCs as an efficient method is always used to improve the Mn 2+ emission. We adopted a one-pot halogen injection into Cs-precursor under ambient environment method to prepare (Mn, Ni): CsPbCl 3 and (Mn, Ni): CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 NCs, which introduces NiCl 2 in the Mn: CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 NCs to supply enough halide ions and to passivate defect states or traps in the perovskite NCs so as to enhance Mn 2+ emission. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were also conducted to explain our experimental results, which revealed that Ni 2+ doping could eliminate the in-gap deep defects of the CsPb(Cl/Br) 3 nanocrystals. In addition, the passivated lattice defects help to improve the stability of the perovskite NCs, preventing from electron beam irradiation.

A red-light-chargeable near infrared MgGeO3:Mn2+,Yb3+ persistent phosphor for bioimaging and optical information storage applications

Weili Wang,Shao Yan,Yanjie Liang,Dongxun Chen,Fang Wang,Jingwei Liu,Yi Zhang,Kangning Sun,Dongqi Tang

Near-infrared (NIR) persistent phosphors have attracted extensive research interest owing to their distinct wavelength features and self-sustained luminescence properties. However, the high-energy ultraviolet light that is consistently used to charge these phosphors has compromised some promising applications, especially for biomedical imaging. Herein, we have successfully utilized long-wavelength 635 nm red-light to achieve intense NIR persistent luminescence in a MgGeO3:Mn2+,Yb3+ phosphor. Seconds to minutes of 635 nm red-light charging can result in long-lasting NIR afterglow at around 680 nm for longer than 12 h. The photon trapping and detrapping processes in the MgGeO3:Mn2+,Yb3+ phosphor were investigated in detail by varying the 635 nm red laser output power and the excitation duration, which indicate that a two-photon upconversion charging process is responsible for NIR persistent luminescence upon red-light illumination. The red-light-charging capability and self-sustained NIR luminescence properties make this material perfectly suited to applications across a wide number of fields, such as acting as ideal optical probes for deep-tissue bio-imaging and developing optical data storage technology for information security systems.

Mn2+-mediated fluorescence enhanced carbon dots to detect 1,3-diphenylguanidine by aggregation-induced quenching and photoinduced electron transfer

Chen Jiale,Zhang Yunkai,Gao Sineng,Liu Xinru,Wang Sihao,Shi Junyuan,Yin Zihang,Zhang Ting,Zhang Yihao,Chen Da

1,3-Diphenylguanidine (DPG), an additive widely utilized in industrial production, has been reported to exhibit numerous hazardous effects. However, effective methods for its real-time detection remain limited. In this study, an F, N-codoped carbon dots@Mn 2+ (F, N-CDs@Mn 2+ ) system is successfully developed for the rapid fluorescent detection of DPG. Initially, upon the addition of Mn²⁺, a blue shift (from 489 to 475 nm) is observed in the F, N-CDs@Mn 2+ system due to chelation-enhanced fluorescence. Following the subsequent introduction of DPG, a significant fluorescence quenching accompanied by a pronounced red shift (from 475 to 501 nm) occurs in the F, N-CDs@Mn 2+ +DPG, owing to aggregation-induced quenching and photoinduced electron transfer. This sensor exhibits a broad linear range spanning from 0 to 10.55 µg/mL, along with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 23.63 ng/mL. Moreover, the F, N-CDs@Mn 2+ system is combined with RGB analysis for the real-time detection of DPG, yielding satisfactory results with an LOD of 37.12 ng/mL and recoveries ranging from 97% to 114.33%. Consequently, highly sensitive and selective detection of DPG is achieved, providing a real-time visual analytical platform for safeguarding human health and enabling early warning of environmental pollution. Trap-Mediated Energy Transfer of Localized Excitons for Efficient Mn2+ Luminescence in Highly Doped Cd-Based Perovskite Nanocrystals

Jie Hou,Bin Yang,Jun Chen,Huan Yang,Junsheng Chen,Jianyong Liu

Mn 2+ -doped nanomaterials are attractive for optoelectronic applications due to their characteristic dopant emission enabled by host-to-dopant energy transfer (ET). However, increasing Mn 2+ concentrations typically leads to severe photoluminescence (PL) quenching due to strong Mn 2+ -Mn 2+ interactions and the formation of nonradiative trap states. Here, we demonstrate that this challenge can be overcome in Cd-based perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) by exploiting localized excitons (LEs) coupled to a fast thermodynamic equilibrium with trap states. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy suggests a rapid LE-trap equilibrium (∼100 ps) at room temperature. Mn 2 + doping further enhances exciton localization and redistributes the exciton population into trap states, which serve as intermediates for Dexter-type energy transfer, accelerating Mn 2 + excitation by over an order of magnitude compared to direct energy transfer from LEs. Consequently, efficient and thermally stable Mn 2+ emission is achieved at elevated dopant concentrations. The PL quantum yield exceeds that of the undoped NCs by more than 12-fold and retains 70% of its maximum value even at 20% Mn 2+ concentration in Cs 2 CdCl 4 :Mn 2+ NCs.

A Shuttle-Catalysis Strategy Coupled with 3D Conductive Scaffolds for Ultrafast and Long-Lifespan MnO2/Mn2+ Conversion Chemistry

Diyu Xu,Ziyou Huang,Ziheng Lin,Jinjun He,Yi Wang,Siyu Cai,Gongming Wang,Gang Zhang,Zujin Yang,Xihong Lu

Aqueous rechargeable batteries relying on the two-electron MnO2/Mn2+ deposition/dissolution chemistry offer a high theoretical capacity (616 mAh g-1). However, their practicality is hampered by the disproportionation of Mn3+ intermediates and the irreversible buildup of electrochemically inert MnO2 deposits, which severely compromise the reversibility of the MnO2/Mn2+ conversion process and undermine long-term cycling stability. To overcome these issues, we propose an Fe2+-induced shuttle-catalysis strategy with a rationally designed three-dimensional (3D) conductive carbon scaffold. Specifically, Fe2+ was introduced as a redox mediator to catalytically accelerate MnO2 dissolution via MnO2 + 2Fe2+ + 4H+ → Mn2+ + 2Fe3+ + 2H2O, enabling high MnO2/Mn2+ conversion efficiency. Simultaneously, a carbon nanotube‑decorated carbon cloth serves as the conductive current collector, offering abundant disproportionation sites for the diffused Mn3+ and sufficient electron‑transport pathways to guide uniform MnO2 growth. As a result, the optimized MnO2/Mn2+ cathode achieves exceptional stability over 7000 cycles at 3 mAh cm-2 and remarkable rate capability with negligible capacity loss at 60 mA cm-2. When paired with a Sn anode in a full‑cell configuration, the battery exhibits stable cycling for more than 1800 cycles, and practical functionality demonstrated by powering a light-emitting diode.

Photoluminescence and Color-Tunable Properties of Na4Ca4Mg21(PO4)18:Eu2+,Tb3+/Mn2+ Phosphors for Applications in White LEDs

Dan Zhang,Xiangting Zhang,Zhengce An,Rujia Dong,Zhan Shi,Yanhua Song,Haifeng Zou

Here, the crystal structure, phase analysis, site occupancy, and luminescence properties of NCMP:Eu2+,Tb3+,Mn2+ have been studied for the first time. Under 335 nm ultraviolet excitation, the NCMP:Eu2+ phosphors show narrow-band blue emission. In addition, we discuss the reason for a continuous red shift for the emission spectra of NCMP:xEu2+ by raising the x value. The efficient ET processes of Eu2+ → Tb3+ and Eu2+ → Mn2+ were investigated by the luminescence spectra and decay curves. The ET efficiencies reach 92.58% at y = 0.15 for NCMP:0.01Eu2+,yTb3+ and 99.85% at z = 0.15 for NCMP:0.01Eu2+,zMn2+ phosphors, respectively. The efficient energy transfer processes greatly improve the quantum efficiency, luminous intensity, and thermal stability. Bright green and red emissions can be realized through changing the related ratio of Eu2+, Tb3+, and Mn2+. In addition, the excellent performance of the prepared white LED lamps utilizing a 385 nm chip combined with our prepared NCMP:Eu2+,Tb3+/Mn2+ phosphors indicates that NCMP:0.01Eu2+,yTb3+ and NCMP:0.01Eu2+,zMn2+ phosphors can be potential green and red phosphors for white LEDs.

Mn2+-Doped Perovskite Nanocrystals Embedded in Glass With Green–Red Emissions for Wide-Gamut White Light-Emitting Diodes

Ming Yang,Yudong Zhang,Wenchao Zhang,Jong Heo,Chao Liu

We demonstrate tunable green–red dual-band photoluminescence (PL) in glasses containing Mn 2+ -doped CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals (NCs) and evaluate their application in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Green emission from CsPbBr 3 NCs was achieved by controlling the competitive growth between CsPbBr 3 and Cs 4 PbBr 6 crystals. Red emission originates from energy transfer from CsPbBr 3 excitons to Mn 2+ ions. The relative PL intensity ratio of red to green emission ( I Mn / I Ex ) reached values as high as 7.19, while the maximum photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) was 44 ± 1% following heat treatment at 560°C for 15 h. The glass exhibited excellent spectral stability at 175°C and after immersion in water for 30 days. A prototype WLED fabricated using a monolithic glass plate and a 450 nm blue LED chip produced high-quality white light with CIE coordinates of (0.338, 0.324) and a wide color gamut. The color converter also showed excellent photostability, retaining ∼90% of its initial luminous efficacy after 100 h of operation. These results highlight the strong potential of Mn 2+ -doped perovskite NC glasses for practical WLED applications.

Wavelength-Tunability and Multiband Emission from Single-Site Mn2+ Doped CaO Through Antiferromagnetic Coupling and Tailored Superexchange Reactions

Enhai Song,Jinliang Wang,Shi Ye,Xiao-Bao Yang,Mingying Peng,Qinyuan Zhang,Lothar Wondraczek

In modern phosphor materials, in contrast to single-band emission, simultaneous photoluminescence through two or more emission bands enables broad and tailorable emission color, but requires fine control of activator precipitation on specific crystallographic sites. This presents a major obstacle in the design of tunable emitters, since dedicated control of site occupancy is rarely possible. Here, a new paradigm of tunability is considered, which overcomes this limitation. It is demonstrated in CaO:Mn 2+ that single- and dual-band emission can be generated by involving only a single type of crystallographic sites. This enables tailoring of the emission color alone through dopant concentration. The two emission bands exhibit different spectral, dynamic, and thermal characteristics, but very similar excitation spectra. While the variations in thermal quenching provide a tool for tunability, the variations in decay behavior suggest interesting potential for lifetime-multiplexing and coding. Energy transfer is observed between the two emission bands, using time-resolved emission spectra. From the analysis of crystal structure, spectral data, electron paramagnetic resonance analyses, and density functional theory calculations analyses, it is found that the emission bands at ≈600 and 660 nm originate from isolated Mn 2+ ions and superexchange reactions in Mn 2+  Mn 2+ dimers, respectively.

White Light Emission from Single-Component Cs7Cd3Br13:Pb2+,Mn2+ Crystals with High Quantum Efficiency and Enhanced Thermodynamic Stability

Meng Gao,Yuexiao Pan,Chengdong Peng,Yihong Ding,Hongzhou Lian,Liyi Li,Jun Lin

Single-component white light emitters are particularly attractive for fabricating economical solid-state devices for display and lighting. Herein, an efficient white light with photoluminescence quantum yields approaching 98% has been obtained in Mn2+ and Pb2+ co-doped Cs7Cd3Br13 crystals. The quantified bonding and nonbonding characters calculated by the crystal orbital Hamilton population analysis demonstrate that the Mn2+ and Pb2+ occupy preferentially in the [CdBr4]2– tetrahedrons rather than the [CdBr6]4– octahedrons in Cs7Cd3Br13. According to the PL spectral characteristic and the theoretical results, the broadband white light emission from Cs7Cd3Br13:Pb2+,Mn2+ crystals is ascribed to the multiple PL origins, i.e., the first self-trapped exciton (STE1) from the intrinsic trapping states of host lattice Cs7Cd3Br13, the d–d transition of Mn2+, and the second self-trapped exciton (STE2) induced by the introduction of Pb2+, respectively. The results calculated by density functional theory reveal that the incorporation of Mn2+ and Pb2+ has significantly improved the thermodynamic stability of the Cs7Cd3Br13 structure with lower defect formation energies, which is verified by the experimental observation in the temperature-dependent PL spectra of the emitting crystals. The findings here provide a new perspective for a single-component white light via creating multiple PL centers in a single matrix as well as help in the elucidation of the preferential site occupancy mechanism of the dopants in different symmetrical units.
