The practical application of P2-type sodium cathodes is restricted by intrinsic Na + /vacancy ordering and unstable cathode-electrolyte interphases (CEI). While conventional inactive-element doping improves stability, it typically sacrifices specific capacity. Addressing these challenges, we demonstrate that trace Bi doping simultaneously boosts specific capacity, cycling life, and rate performance, effectively circumventing the classic capacity-stability trade-off. The concurrent improvement primarily originates from Bi-induced structural modulation, which we quantitatively characterize through a newly proposed oxygen-ion displacement rate ( δ O ) descriptor. Through doping control, we successfully synthesized two P2-type materials with significantly distinct δ O values (∼38.07 % vs. ∼31.58 %), demonstrating the critical role of δ O in governing electrochemical performance. The material with ultra-low δ O has suppressed Na + /vacancy ordering due to its weak Na-O correlations. Additionally, its strong TM-O correlations effectively inhibit TM (transition metals) dissolution, construct a stable CEI, and alleviate the lattice strain. Consequently, this material exhibits delivers a 23.1 % enhancement in specific capacity, exceptional cycling stability (72.9 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles), and remarkable rate performance by achieving a 51.1 % capacity within just 34 s. This work introduces a pioneering perspective based on oxygen-ion displacement for designing high-performance oxide cathode materials.

Aqueous Na-ion batteries (ANIBs) are promising candidates for grid-scale energy storage owing to their inherent safety, low cost, and rapid ion transport kinetics. While current research focuses on enhancing capacity and kinetics to overcome energy density limitations and leverage their inherent kinetic advantages under extreme conditions such as high mass loading and low temperatures, investigations remain predominantly centered on electrode materials and electrolytes, with binders being notably understudied. Here, we investigate the impact of two prevalent binders-polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-on the electrochemical performance of nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) electrodes in ANIBs. Our results reveal that PVDF's better adhesion and electrolyte wettability optimize ion transport, significantly enhancing electrode kinetics vs. PTFE. Utilizing PVDF as the binder in a 3D-printing platform, we fabricated a freestanding electrode achieving >20 mg cm−2 active material loading, superior kinetics, and >95% capacity retention over 4000 cycles. The derived full cell reduces polarization at −20 °C, delivering higher energy density than PTFE-based full cells. This work demonstrates a multiscale regulation strategy for binder-electrode structures, offering a viable pathway toward high-performance aqueous energy storage systems.

Metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPTCs) have demonstrated remarkable advantages as anode materials for alkali metal ion batteries because of their unique electronic structure and layered characteristics. In this study, layered CdPS 3 was successfully prepared by chemical vapor transport, and its Na + storage performance and reaction mechanisms were systematically investigated. Electrochemical tests revealed that CdPS 3 maintains a reversible capacity of 195.7 mA h g −1 after 340 cycles at a high current density of 5 A g −1 , revealing exceptional cyclic stability. Comprehensive characterization confirmed that the sodium storage process follows a typical multi-stage mechanism encompassing intercalation, conversion, and alloying (mainly during the first 40 cycles) processes, wherein partial conversion of CdPS 3 generates electrochemically active CdS nanoparticles that participate in subsequent electrochemical processes. Kinetic analysis indicated high Na + diffusion coefficients in CdPS 3 , while theoretical calculations revealed preferential Na + adsorption within the CdPS 3 interlayers. These findings provide important theoretical and experimental foundations for developing high-performance metal phosphorus trichalcogenides anode materials.

The use of porous hard carbons (PHCs) as electrode materials in sodium-ion batteries has great potential; however, the exposure of large surface areas to electrolyte flow results in irregular and irreversible solid electrolyte interfaces (SEIs), leading to deteriorated ionic and electronic mobility and inferior initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE). These issues can be addressed through suitable structural modifications of PHC materials. Herein, the integration of high-surface-area PHCs with carbon nanofibers (CNFs) was accomplished by a simple electrospinning technique, which resulted in a uniform and reversible SEI layer. In the meantime, the CNFs’ mesh provided connectivity and conductivity in the as-integrated electrodes, whereas PHCs offered fast diffusion kinetics and high Na+ ion storage capacity. Additionally, PHC integration with CNFs demonstrated an excellent ICE of 77% and a specific capacity of 505 mAh/g at 25 mA/g. Furthermore, the conjugated microstructure also provided flexibility and stability to the electrode (260 mAh/g after 500 cycles). This remarkable synergy may promote the development of free-standing, flexible, and highly porous properties in a single material for advanced energy storage applications.

One of the targets associated with developing high-performance alkaline direct liquid fuel cells is to maximize the utilization of catalysts and minimize the limitation of anion materials that suffer from low ion conductivity and thermal and chemical instability. Herein, an ionomer-free and phase-boundary-matched Na-ion direct formate fuel cell (Na-DFFC) was reported to address this issue from the viewpoint of meeting interface transport behaviors for electrochemical reactions. A proof-of-concept phase-boundary-matched Na-DFFC including neither ionomers nor additional liquid electrolyte yields a peak power density as high as 45 mW cm–2, primarily because the dissociation and hydrolysis of formate on anode and the generation of NaOH on cathode enable electrodes to possess sufficient Na+ and OH–, thereby increasing the double-phase boundary density, leading to a high catalyst utilization. Additionally, a stable 60 min constant current discharge at 90 °C proves the conceptual feasibility of the high-temperature Na-DFFC. These results present a new scheme toward high-performance alkaline direct liquid fuel cells in terms of meeting all requirements of electrochemical kinetics and mass and charge transport characteristics.

The irrational utilization of an anionic electron often accompanies structural degradation with an irreversible cation migration process upon cycling in sodium-layered oxide cathodes. Moreover, the insufficient understanding of the anionic redox involved cation migration makes the design strategies of high energy density electrodes even less effective. Herein, a P3-Na0.67Li0.2Fe0.2Mn0.6O2 (P3-NLFM) cathode is proposed with the in-plane disordered Li distribution after an in-depth remolding of the Li ribbon-ordered P3-Na0.6Li0.2Mn0.8O2 (P3-NLM) layered oxide. The disordered Li sublattice in the transition metal slab of P3-NLFM leads to the dispersed |O2p orbitals, the lowered charge transfer gap, and the suppressed phase transition at high voltages. Then the enhanced Mn–O interaction and electronic stability are disclosed by the crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analysis at high voltage in P3-NLFM. Furthermore, ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation suggests the order/disorder of the transition metal layer is highly correlated with the stability of the Li sublattice. The cross-layer migration and loss of Li in P3-NLM are suppressed in P3-NLFM to enable the high reversibility upon cycling. As a result, the P3-NLFM delivers a high capacity of 163 mAh g–1 without oxygen release and an enhanced capacity retention of 81.9% (vs 42.9% in P3-NLM) after 200 cycles, which constitutes a promising approach for sustainable oxygen redox in rechargeable batteries.

The NASICON-type Na4MnV(PO4)3 (NMVP) possesses potential as a cathode material in SIBs, and is known for its stable 3D Na+ superconductive framework, high voltage platform, and relatively low cost and toxicity. Nevertheless, the intrinsic poor electronic conductivity and Jahn–Teller effect from Mn3+ during cycling limit its further application. Herein, to address such issues, a well-designed 3D porous spheroidal Ce3+-doped NMVP@CeO2/C cathode was constructed via a simple spraying drying-assisted route. As proved, the synergistic effect of Ce3+ doping in the crystal framework and CeO2 surface coating was achieved simultaneously, which greatly improved the electronic conductivity, facilitated the ion diffusion transfer and stabilized the crystalline structure. As a result, the as-prepared sample delivered superior discharge performance (50.3 mA h g−1 at 50C) and long circular life (91.0 mA h g−1 after 2000 cycles at 5C with 86.7% capacity retention). Furthermore, the reversible biphasic reaction for cathodes was confirmed by Galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) and ex situ XRD. The DFT calculation revealed the influence of Ce3+-doping on the crystalline framework and electrochemical properties. Finally, the optimized NMVP cathode also showed great potential for practical utilization through the successful assembly of full cells.

Rare-earth-free carbon nitride luminescent materials that remain bright during prolonged high-temperature operation are highly desirable for harsh-environment optoelectronics, yet their emission is often limited by thermally activated non-radiative pathways and accelerated weathering under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. Here, we report a K/Na co-regulated carbon nitride (K/Na-CN) prepared via a solid-state route. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurements show a well-preserved emission band with only limited chromaticity deviation over a broad heating window. Under vacuum, K/Na-CN retains ~ 50% of its initial PL intensity at 300 °C and maintains ~ 70% PL intensity after holding at 300 °C for 60 min. During UV aging (0–192h), the powder PL intensity increases to ~ 1.7–1.8 × at 48h, reaches a maximum of ~ 2.4 × at 144h, and remains at ~ 1.5 × after 192h, which indicates robust emissive states despite irradiation-driven defect-state rebalancing. After incorporation of K/Na-CN into PMMA to prepare transparent luminescent plates, at an optimized loading, the composite shows the best dispersion and maintains high optical clarity (visible transmittance > 80% and reflectance < 12%), while providing improved UV service behavior. After UV exposure, the composite emission exhibits a systematic blue shift from ~ 530 nm (0h) to ~ 500 nm (48 h) and ~ 480 nm (96h). Meanwhile, the weak intensity gap is consistent with bulk particle aggregation and inner-filter effects limiting the effective radiative gain. Overall, K/Na-CN combines sustained high-temperature fluorescence with UV-tolerant performance in both powders and transparent polymer composites, offering a practical platform for long-service luminescent components operating under heat and irradiation stress.

P2-type Na x Li y Mn 1– y O 2 layered
oxides represent a promising class of cathode materials for sodium-ion
batteries, capable of delivering a high specific capacity by leveraging
anionic redox reactions. However, their practical application is often
hampered by issues such as Na + /vacancy ordering and irreversible
oxygen release, which significantly impair the rate capability and
cycling stability. To address the aforementioned problem, this work
demonstrates that introducing trace La into P2–Na 0.6 Li 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 fundamentally alters
the Na + distribution between Na e and Na f sites in the sodium layer and suppresses Na + /vacancy
ordering. More importantly, the high bond energy of La–O significantly
enhances the stability of lattice oxygen, suppressing irreversible
oxygen release during cycling and thereby simultaneously improving
the reversibility of redox reactions and structural integrity. Electrochemical
tests demonstrate that the optimized LM-La0.04 cathode delivers a
high discharge capacity of 193.5 mAh g –1 at 0.2
C and retains a reversible capacity of 86.8 mAh g –1 even at 10 C, highlighting its superior rate performance. Furthermore,
the material exhibits remarkable capacity retention in long-term cycling.
A combination of in situ and ex situ characterization techniques and theoretical calculations was employed
to elucidate the charge compensation mechanism and structural evolution
of the La-doped system during electrochemical cycling. This work provides
new insights into the regulatory role of lanthanum in layered oxides
and offers a feasible doping strategy for developing anion-redox-based
cathode materials with a high energy density and long cycling stability.

Graphical A novel deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) based on NaFSi and ethyl-2-cyano-3-ethoxyacrylate is developed for sodium-metal batteries. The introduction of ploy(vinylene carbonate) cross-linking network in novel DEE 1/3 could regulate the solvation shell structure of DEE 1/3 , thus facilitating the fast Na + transport and contributing to the uniform Na deposition process. Deep eutectic electrolyte (DEE) with intrinsic nonflammability is deemed as a promising electrolyte candidate for high safety sodium-metal batteries (SMBs). Nevertheless, the leakage risk and inferior electrode compatibility impede their further application toward high-performance SMBs. Herein, a novel DEE based on sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSi) and ethyl-2-cyano-3-ethoxyacrylate (ECE) is developed through their Lewis acid–base interaction and the further ECE-based deep eutectic gel electrolyte (GE) is constructed with cross-linked ploy(vinylene carbonate) (PVC) as matrix network. It is demonstrated that incorporating electron-withdrawing PVC polymer into the ECE-based DEE changes the coordination environment of Na + ions, thus facilitating the Na-ions desolvation and transport and leading to a high transference number of Na-ions (0.7). Moreover, the strong interaction between PVC chains and Na-ions can induce the preferential reduction of PVC to form O-rich inorganic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), thus promoting the electrode/electrolyte interfacial stability with superior long-term cycling stability. Benefiting from the stable SEI layer, the Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 //Na cell with GE displays outstanding cycling (capacity retention of 94.5% after 300 cycles at 1C) and rate (high capacity of 75.5 mAh g −1 at 2 °C) performance than that of ECE-based DEE cell, showcasing the promising application of advanced deep eutectic GE in high performance SMBs.

With the increasing power density of integrated circuits challenging traditional passive heat dissipation, novel materials such as phase change hydrogel are often required. In this work, a biomimetic sweating phase change composite hydrogel is presented where a Co-N/O coordination structure is fabricated via the coordination reaction of CoSO₄·7H₂O and ethanolamine. The hydrated salt phase change material, Na₂SO₄·10H₂O, is embedded in a polyacrylamide matrix, and carbon nanotubes are introduced to construct a 3D thermal conduction pathway. During the phase change, Na₂SO₄·10H₂O absorbs heat and releases water for evaporative cooling. The Co-N/O structure, acting as a hygroscopic site, adsorbs ambient moisture when the system is inactive, promoting the hydration and regeneration of Na₂SO₄·10H₂O and enabling synergistic optimization. This composite hydrogel features a phase change enthalpy exceeding 130 J·g −1 . The addition of carbon nanotubes boosts its thermal conductivity by 107 % to 0.793 W·m −1 ·K −1 . The Co-N/O structure significantly enhances its moisture absorption/desorption capabilities, with a moisture absorption rate of 4.71 g·g −1 at 95 % relative humidity and a maximum water absorption rate of 2.7 g·g −1 ·h −1 . At 30 % relative humidity, over 80 % of water is released within 50 min at 60 °C. In operation, it reduces the heating plate temperature by 8.6 °C and maintains a low temperature for 140 min, offering an efficient and eco - friendly solution for high - density electronic device heat dissipation.

Owing to the high theoretical capacity, multi-electron reactions and semimetallic characteristics, metal tellurides present promising potential for sodium-ion storage. Yet structural collapse and capacity degradation remain inevitable. In this work, a structural confinement strategy was employed to fabricate zinc-telluride/cobalt-telluride heterostructures (ZnTe/CoTe 2 @NC) that is constrained by nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) derived from a metal-organic framework (MOF) and reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs), via template self-assembly followed by in-situ tellurization. The CNTs crosslink with the MOF precursor to yield a dual-restricted architecture that suppresses nanoparticles agglomeration and enhances cycling stability. In-situ and ex-situ techniques elucidate the “alloy-conversion” reaction mechanism and pseudocapacitive sodium storage behavior of the ZnTe/CoTe 2 @NC anodes. While the density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the electronic structure modulation underlying their enhanced conductivity. These favorable electrochemical features arise from the synergistic effects of the Zn-Co heterointerface, the highly conductive carbon network, and the abundant defect sites introduced by nitrogen doping, which mitigate sluggish ion transport and structural degradation. As a result, the ZnTe/CoTe 2 @NC anode delivers a high-rate capacity of 82.1 mAh·g −1 at 20.0 A g −1 and retains 106.1 mAh·g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 after 5000 cycles. This study offers a rational confinement strategy and provides insight into designing electrochemically durable telluride heterostructure anodes.
