Nanoporous cobalt-doped AlNi3/NiO architecture for high performing hydrogen evolution at high current densities

Bohao Kong,Hefeng Yuan,Zhehao Liu,Zizai Ma,Xiaoguang Wang

Engineering platinum-free catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with high activity and stability is essential for electrochemical hydrogen production . In this paper, we report the synthesis of cobalt-doped AlNi 3 /NiO (Co-AlNi 3 /NiO) electrode with three-dimensional nanoporous structure via chemical dealloying method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Co-AlNi 3 /NiO can accelerate water adsorption / dissociation and optimize adsorption–desorption energies of H* intermediates, thus improving the intrinsic HER activity. Both the introduction of Co and Al can efficiently ameliorate the electronic density around Ni sites of NiO and AlNi 3 , which can effectively reduce the energy barrier towards Volmer–Heyrovsky reaction and thus synergistically promote the hydrogen evolution. Benefiting from the large electrochemical active surface area , high electrical conductivity and electronic effect, the nanoporous Co-AlNi 3 /NiO catalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity with an overpotential of 73 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline condition, outperforming most of the reported non-precious metal catalysts . The nanoporous Co-AlNi 3 /NiO catalyst can operate continuously over 1000 h at high current densities with a robust stability. This work provides a new vision for the development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Construction of nanoflowers combustion catalyst NiO@g-C3N4 for improving thermal decomposition performance of AP

Yanan Sun,Yuqi Zhu,Shengjiang Zhang,Suhang Chen,Fengqi Zhao,Kangzhen Xu

Thermal decomposition of ammonium perchlorate (AP) typically requires high temperatures and activation energy, but the introduction of combustion catalysts will improve its thermal decomposition performance. Therefore, it is crucial to rationally design combustion catalysts for enhancing the thermal decomposition performance of AP. Herein, 3D NiO nanoflowers@2D graphite-phase carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets (NiO@x%CN, x = 1, 3, 5, 7, 9) composite catalysts were constructed by solvothermal and calcination methods, and characterized by a series of analyses. NiO@5%CN displayed the best ability to catalyze the thermal decomposition of AP, which reduced the high decomposition temperature of AP by 113.8 °C and the activation energy by 21.67 kJ mol −1 . The combustion rate of NiO@5%CN-CSP has increased by 118 % compared to that of composite solid propellants. This work provides a new insight for the design of NiO-based high-efficiency combustion catalysts.

Synthesis, optimization, electrochemical and electrochromic properties of Zr-doped NiO films by chemical spray pyrolysis

Yuanyuan Tian,Hui Wang,Shengli Liu,Bo Zhang

Zirconium (Zr)-doped NiO films with different contents were successfully synthesized via the chemical spray pyrolysis technique. The structure, morphology, optical and electrochemical behaviors of these films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), UV–Vis-NIR spectrophotometry, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and chronoamperometry (CA). XRD results suggested that the synthesized samples have the cubic crystal structure and a preferred orientation along the plane (111). Raman spectra further confirmed the successful incorporation of zirconium ions into the NiO films. SEM images explained that the surfaces of the doped films were composed of uniform and dense nanoparticles. EDS analysis suggested that Zr, Ni and O elements were uniformly distributed on the films. The optical results showed that the band gap decreases from 3.53 eV to 3.47 eV as the increase of zirconium doping content. The electrochemical analysis suggested that zirconium doping improved the specific capacitance of the NiO films (the NiO film with the Zr amount of 7 %, 59 F/g at 6 mV/s). In addition, the NiO film with 5 % Zr doped amount exhibited the largest Δ OD (81 %), the largest CE (60.37 cm 2 /C), and the fastest coloring time ( t c =2.1 s) and bleaching time ( t b = 2.4 s). These results showed that this film had the excellent electrochromic properties, suggesting that the optimal Zr doped amount of NiO films is 5 %. As a novel kind of electrochromic material, the Zr-doped NiO film has broad application prospects in smart windows, green buildings and energy efficient utilization fields.

Selective adsorption behavior of reducing gases on the NiO–In2O3 heterojunction under the interfacial effect

Shuai Nie,Jing Li,Yunxia He,Xitao Yin

Gas sensors with the p–n heterojunction have demonstrated distinct sensing responses to reducing gases, yet a clear understanding of the reaction pathways and selective adsorption mechanisms for specific gas components remains elusive, impeding practical applications. In this study, we constructed an atomic-level NiO–In 2 O 3 heterojunction and explored its adsorption behaviors and sensing properties for CO and H 2 by first-principles calculations. Analysis of its electronic properties, focusing on binding energy, differential charge density, and density of states, confirmed the creation of a highly stable NiO–In 2 O 3 heterojunction and alterations in the coordination environment of the surface-active atoms. These changes potentially led to differences in the affinity between the gas molecules and the adsorption sites. The calculations of the adsorption properties revealed that the adsorption capacity of H 2 is relatively weak compared to the strong interactions between CO and heterojunction surface atoms, indicating a readily variable reaction pathway for H 2 . Consequently, the adsorption configuration at the interface site on the NiO–In 2 O 3 heterojunction surface exhibited a predominantly p-type response for CO and a unique n-type response for H 2 . This interfacial effect of the heterojunction is crucial for the selective adsorption of CO and H 2 . Furthermore, the opposite response signal was verified by gas sensing tests, which also presented the superior stability of the NiO–In 2 O 3 sensor. The p–n heterojunction of the corresponding composites was effectively characterized. This research offers new insights into the selective adsorption mechanism, paving the way for the development of gas sensors.

Regulation of multilayer long crystalline MoS2 by NiO-modified Al2O3 for improved hydrodesulfurization of COS

Yubiao Li,Yu Liu,Xueqian Wang,Yixing Ma,Ping Ning,Langlang Wang,Xiang Li,Rui Cao

Activated alumina-based composite oxide support is a commonly used support in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) catalysts, which not only retains the performance advantages of each component in the composite oxide support, but also significantly improves the defects of a single activated alumina support, such as the strong metal-support force of interaction. In this study, NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support was prepared by introducing NiO-modified Al 2 O 3 , and MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared for the hydrodesulfurization of COS by liquid phase reduction method. In the COS hydrogenation reaction, the MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved complete conversion of COS at 220 °C and showed more than 99.9% H 2 S selectivity. In stability tests, the catalyst maintained a COS conversion of over 99% throughout the 23-h hydrogenation reaction. Various characterization results show that the NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support prepared by introducing NiO-modified Al 2 O 3 weakens the metal-support interaction force between MoS 2 and NiO-Al 2 O 3 composite support, which is conducive to the synthesis of MoS 2 with multilayer and long wafer structures. And it can significantly increase the formation rate of MoS 2 to 87.9%, which greatly improves the active site content of the catalyst. Furthermore, the dual modulation of MoS 2 and Al 2 O 3 by NiO modulated the surface alkalinity of the catalysts and promoted the formation of a large number of active edge sites in the MoS 2 /NiO-Al 2 O 3 catalysts, which in turn significantly improved the HDS performance of the catalysts. In addition, EPR characterization combined with experiments showed that the sulfur vacancies are the active sites for catalytic COS hydrodesulfurization over MoS 2 -based catalysts.

Preparation of Petal-like structure NiO@ZIF-67 nanocomposites for application to high-performance supercapacitors

Mou Yuhang,He Qing,He Ying,Meng Chenyao,Liu Hui,Li Liang

Supercapacitors as green energy storage devices are widely utilized in vehicle manufacturing, rail transportation, power systems, and other fields. In this study, petal-like NiO was synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method, followed by the preparation of NiO@ZIF-67 composite electrode material at room temperature. X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests demonstrated that the NiO in NiO@ZIF-67 possesses a porous petal-like structure, with ZIF-67 particles uniformly growing on NiO sheets. The effect of ZIF-67 content on the electrochemical performance of NiO was investigated, and results showed that NiO@ZIF-67/1, prepared with a mass ratio of NiO to Co(NO₃)₂·6 H₂O of 1:1, exhibits the optimal electrochemical performance. The specific capacitance of NiO@ZIF-67/1 electrode material reached 188.44 F·g⁻¹ at 1 A/g. Furthermore, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with NiO@ZIF-67 exhibited a maximum energy density of 41.76 Wh/kg at 1.4 kW/h, with a capacitance retention rate of 87.2% after 5000 cycles. Preparation of Pt/Co(OH)2- NiO/C catalysts and their electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol

Mengyin Liao,Chao Wang,Xuanhua Zhang,Chao Luan,Wenyuan Xu,Zhongyi He

Novel Pt/Co(OH)2-NiO/C catalysts based on carbon black were successfully synthesized using the hydrazine hydrate reduction method and galvanic replacement strategies. They were subsequently tested for their activity in the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol. It was observed that the peak current density of Pt/Co(OH)2-NiO/C (8.29 A mg-1Pt) was 22.4 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C-JM (0.37 A mg-1Pt). The electrocatalytic activities and durabilities of the synchronously synthesized Pt/Co(OH)2-NiO/C catalysts were significantly better than those of PtCo/C, PtNi/C, and PtCoNi/C-X (X = 200, 400, 600) catalysts synthesized by calcination in Ar at different temperatures. The reason is that the highly dispersed Pt helps to expose more active sites on the catalyst surface, and the addition of Co(OH)2 and NiO alters the electron density of Pt, which reduces the adsorption of intermediate CO, attenuates the toxic effect, and enables more efficient oxidation of methanol.

Synergy of non-precious Co single atom sites and NiO support in catalytic transfer hydrogenation

Yuqi Zhang,Bang Gu,Zhipeng Zhang,Bohai Wang,Vitaly Ordomsky,Andrei Khodakov,Futing Xia,Wenhao Fang

The catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of furfural (FF) to furfuryl alcohol (FA) plays a key role in biomass valorization by transforming a renewable platform molecule into a high-value chemical used in resins and polymers. By using alcohols instead of pressurized H 2 , the process enhances safety and energy efficiency. However, the use of non-precious metal single atoms (NPM-SAs) catalysts in CTH of FF to FA under mild conditions remains underexplored. In this study, Co single atoms (Co SAs) were anchored onto a NiO support using a straightforward one-pot NaBH 4 hydrolysis-reduction method, avoiding the high-temperature pyrolysis. The developed Co SAs/NiO catalyst achieved 97% FA selectivity with 99% FF conversion at 120 °C under 1   bar of Ar. FA productivity reached 18.9 mol FA mol Co −1 h −1 and increased to 37.8 mol FA mol Co −1 h −1 when Ar was replaced with an atmospheric H 2 , achieving the highest FA productivity under the milder reaction conditions among all the reported Co-based catalysts. Structural and mechanistic studies using XANES, FT-EXAFS, TEM, in situ DRIFT-IR, and kinetic experiments revealed a strong synergy between Co SAs and the NiO support. Co−O 3 single atoms anchored at oxygen vacancies on the NiO support acted as the key active sites, facilitating the reaction via a “ Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley ” mechanism. Compared to NiO and Co nanoparticles, Co SAs enhanced FF and isopropanol adsorption with a facilitated FA desorption, lowering the reaction barrier and enhancing the overall efficiency. Additionally, the catalyst demonstrated an excellent stability over eight consecutive cycles without metal leaching and proved effective for CTH of various aldehydes. This study highlights the potential of NPM-SAs catalysts synthesized by a simple method for efficient and selective CTH reactions under mild conditions.

Oxygen Vacancy Enhanced Proton Transfer to Boost Carbamate Decomposition Kinetics with Tunable Heterostructure Ni/NiO

Xing Li,Lei Xing,Guoxiong Zhan,Zhoulan Huang,Zhen Chen,Huazhen Chang,Junhua Li

Catalytic carbamate decomposition is a feasible option for reducing the heat duty of amine solvent regeneration during the chemisorption of CO2 capture; advanced material with excellent proton transfer and exchange performance is crucial to boost the decomposition kinetics in an alkaline environment. Here, we prepared magnetic heterostructure Ni/NiO nanocatalysts with tunable Ni(0) nanoparticles and NiO support. The heterointerface of the proposed materials creates abundant surface oxygen vacancies (OVs) and offers abundant reactive active sites ascribed to the special electron transfer scheme of Ni0–NiO. The generated surface hydroxyls and unsaturated coordinated Ni, respectively, provide transferable protons and electrons, involved in the deprotonation of RNH3+ and C–N break of RNHCOO–. Thus, the obtained nanomaterials achieved considerably improved CO2 desorption of up to 3 mmol/min for a CO2-saturated monoethanolamine solvent, representing a substantial (approximately 50%) increase over the catalyst-free case. The reinforcement mechanism of OV generation by the Ni/NiO heterostructure and the induced proton transfer were revealed through in situ spectroscopic measurement and theoretical calculations. The results verified that the OVs stimulate the production of surface hydroxyls and water-assisted proton hopping, providing an advantageous condition for carbamate decomposition.

Unlocking the role of oxygen vacancies in FeO/NiO/Ni for boosting 5-hydroxymethylfurfural electrooxidation

Xingchun Shi,Qian Zhang,Jinting Wu,Haijiao Lu,Hao Qin,Xiao-Dong Zhu,Jian Gao,Yong-Chao Zhang

Electrocatalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMFOR) offers an energy-efficient route to high value-added chemicals. There is an urgent demand for high-performance non-precious metal catalysts. Herein, the oxygen-deficient FeO/NiO/Ni was synthesized, which has high performance for HMFOR with a conversion rate of 100%, a selectivity of 98.6% for 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), and a Faradaic efficiency of 94.1% at 1.5 V (vs. RHE), superior to most reported non-precious metal catalysts. The efficient catalytic activity of FeO/NiO/Ni is attributed to the high specific surface area and enhanced adsorption and activation of HMF by oxygen vacancies, thereby reducing the rate-limiting step energy barrier of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxylic acid to 5-formyl-furancarboxylic acid (*HMFCA→*FFCA). Ni 3+ acts as the active site for direct HMF oxidation catalysis, while Fe doping induces oxygen vacancies that facilitate the formation and stabilization of Ni 3+ species, enhancing their formation and catalytic functionality.

β-Ga2O3 photodetectors with high-performance enhanced by field control via p-type NiO interlayer

Zeyulin Zhang,Dinghe Liu,Yiru Yan,Liru Zeng,Hao Chen,Qingwen Song,Dazheng Chen,Chunxiang Zhu,Chunfu Zhang,Yuming Zhang,Yue Hao

Gallium oxide (Ga 2 O 3 ) film exhibiting the solar-blind absorption cutoff characteristic holds considerable potential for application in UV photodetectors . The material defects in the device will introduce the recombination region for the photodetector, especially at the interface of the Ga₂O₃ heterojunction . The photogenerated carriers , generated within the Ga 2 O 3 film, will inevitably be influenced by these high recombination centers during their transportation. Avoiding or minimizing this region can improve the performance of the photodetector. The p-n junction, with its depletion region , generates an electric field that drives the carriers away from the recombination region. However, due to the Ga 2 O 3 p-type doping difficulty, our work focuses on the growth of single-crystal NiO/β-Ga₂O₃ films by Mist-CVD and the fabrication of field-controlled photodetectors. The hole concentration in the NiO film is adjusted by doping with different concentrations of Li⁺. Compared with a photodetector without the NiO interlayer, the performance of the photodetector with the structure of NiO (1 % Li⁺-doped)/β-Ga₂O₃ exhibits a significant improvement, which achieved the maximum responsivity of 1002.5 A/W, and a high peak detectivity of 3.31 × 10 15 Jones.

Electronic structure engineering of ultradispersed Ru in NiO nanobricks for selective and efficient ethanol electrooxidation

Tianxiang Luo,Jingyi Xie,Xue Li,Xiuwen Wang,Li Sun,Fanqiang Bu,Bing Zhao,Wei Kan,Yuqian He

Integrating the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) into hybrid water-splitting systems presents a dual advantage of reducing anodic overpotentials and co-generating high-value chemicals. Nevertheless, the rational design of catalysts that reconcile high noble-metal atom economy with robust durability remains a formidable task. Here, we report a nanobrick-structured NiO electrocatalyst decorated with highly dispersed Ru species supported on nickel foam (Ru-NiO/NF), in which no Ru nanoparticles or clusters were detected. The catalyst was synthesized via a hydrothermal process followed by ion exchange. The introduction of Ru into the NiO host lattice effectively modulates the local electronic configuration and accelerates charge-transfer kinetics, while simultaneously regulating surface hydroxyl species (OH*) and expanding the electrochemically active surface area. Benefiting from these interfacial synergies, the optimized Ru 2 -NiO/NF delivers current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 at low potentials of 1.08 ± 0.01 V and 1.34 ± 0.02 V, respectively, in 1.0 M KOH containing 0.5 M ethanol, thus outperforming pristine NiO/NF. The catalyst also achieves an acetate selectivity of 96.1 % and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 93.8 %. Complementary experimental evidence and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidate that the robust electronic coupling between Ru and Ni centers optimizes the adsorption energetics of key intermediates, thereby lowering the kinetic barriers for selective ethanol-to-acetate conversion. This work offers insights into the precise manipulation of electronic states in hybrid oxides for efficient, value-added electrocatalytic applications.
