In this study, HDPE/UHMWPE microporous films were prepared by blending UHMWPE and HDPE with DOP as the diluent via thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS) method. Morphological studies showed that the phase separation mode of the mixed systems was hardly changed in the presence of UHMWPE. Both average pore size and porosity of the blend films increased firstly and then decreased with increasing UHMWPE content. When UHMWPE content reached 1.5 wt%, both porosity and average pore size of the film reached their maximum values (with a porosity of 84.8% and an average pore size of 0.79 μm). The addition of UHMWPE was found to not only enhance the thermal stability of the HDPE/UHMWPE blend films, but also greatly reduce their thermal shrinkage rate as well as the closed cell temperature, which made the diaphragms containing UHMWPE have good prospect for the application in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).

A novel Cur/TPP-β-CD/CS/Vc microparticles (MPs) filled CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel was prepared by dispersed the chitosan/vitamin C (CS/Vc) complex and curcumin/TPP-β-cyclodextrin (Cur/TPP-β-CD) complex in the hydrogel precursor of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS). Structural properties of the MPs/CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, TG, rheological, and texture analyzer. It was found that the polymeric MPs with a diameter of about 2.5 μm were homogenously embedded in the composite hydrogel by hydrogen bonding and electronic force, resulting in obvious enhanced mechanical strength and stability of the MPs hybrid hydrogel. In vitro release studies show that the release of Cur and Vc can be more efficiently controlled by the different encapsulation pathways. Moreover, the preferential release of the Cur than that of Vc has been confirmed by the two-dimensional ultraviolet correlation spectroscopy. Therefore, the MPs/CMCS/OSA composite hydrogel can be used for independently controlled release of dual bioactive compounds during codelivery.

Hydrogels with excellent self-healing properties have specific applications in smart polymer materials, but they often do not have excellent mechanical properties, or the preparation process of hydrogels is too complicated. Here, we prepared a multi-functional intelligent hydrogel using a simple water bath one-pot method through the synergistic effect of dual dynamic cross-linked agents, including acylhydrazone bonds (the first cross-linked agent) and borate ester bonds (the second cross-linked agent), at the same time hydrogen bonds provided physical interaction. The hydrogel exhibited excellent self-healing ability (up to 91%) and extraordinary mechanical strength (tensile stress 173.1405 kPa and hysteresis energy of 1.8659 MJ m −3 ). The research used chemical cross-linked (acylhydrazone bonds and borate ester bonds) and physical cross-linked (hydrogen bonds). The prepared hydrogel had the dual advantages of excellent self-healing performance and high mechanical strength. The hydrogel can be used in smart materials, such as working pressure tissues and sensing materials that require a certain degree of mechanical strength and self-healing properties, and also provides a design strategy for preparing hydrogels with high mechanical strength and excellent self-healing properties.

Successfully designed and synthesized PS@Ni@Cu core–shell composite microspheres, which provide efficient electronic transmission for anisotropic conductive films for electronic packaging applications. Herein, a simple method for preparing core–shell composite microspheres using Pickering emulsion polymerization as a template, a dense nano-nickel shell layer was coated on the surface of polystyrene to obtain PS@Ni microspheres, the microspheres have conductivity and magnetic properties. Then the microspheres were coated with nano-copper layer by electroless plating to enhance the mobility of electrons in specific media. Finally, the microspheres are laminated in epoxy resin, which can realize directional (horizontal, inclined, and vertical) movement under magnetic field force to form anisotropic conductive film. The conductivity is 171.68 S cm −1 , the adhesiveness and conductivity of the film can be changed by adjusting the content of microspheres. The film has excellent thermal stability, good adhesion, and can be anisotropic conductive. The difference in conductivity between the conductive direction and the insulating direction is about 10 8 orders of magnitude, and it can adapt to strong acids and alkalis and other more extreme environments. It is significance to the development of electronic packaging and is expected to be widely used in the field of electronic devices.

Flame-retarded epoxy thermosets are highly desirable for electronics-related basic materials in the new-generation information applications. Herein, a DOPO-anchored benzothiadiazole flame retardant, namely DOPO-BTD , is designed and synthesized for P/N/S synergistic flame-retarded epoxy thermosets. DOPO-BTD possesses good thermal stability and excellent compatibility with the epoxy matrix. As reflected by UL 94 test, the DOPO-BTD coated EP passes the V0 rating and achieves a higher LOI value of 34.6% at ultralow P content of 0.39 wt%. The investigation of the DOPO-BTD -triggered P/N/S synergistic flame-retarded effect by thermal images further validated the flame retarded efficacy and dramatic inhibition of the flame. Meanwhile, the incorporation of 4.8 wt% DOPO-BTD into the epoxy matrix, the PHRR, THR, SPR, TSP, and COP are significantly decreased by 37.97%, 27.44%, 25.49%, 19.83%, and 31.70%, respectively. Additionally, the fire growth index (FGI) is sharply dropped 26.06%. Moreover, the TGIR and TGMS results convince the flame-retarded mechanism of DOPO-BTD through the combination of the gas-phase and condensed-phase pathways. The P/N/S synergistic DOPO-BTD can serve as a promising flame retardant for efficiently fabricating the flame-retarded epoxy thermosets, and this study sheds light on the development of multiple elements synergistic flame-retardants for functional polymers with great application potential.

As an essential elastomer used in edge technologies, fluorosilicone rubber (FSR) suffers serious oxidative aging problem when serving at high temperature. In this study, a small amount of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was added to FSR, and the resulting rGO/FSR compounds were vulcanized using 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl) peroxyhexane as the vulcanizer. The dispersion of rGO was investigated using scanning electron microscope. The mechanical properties and thermal-oxidative stability of the rGO/FSR vulcanizates were investigated via thermal aging test at 230°C for 72 h, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and isothermal degradation test at 280, 320, and 350°C. The results showed the small addition of rGO (0.5 wt%) significantly improved the thermo-oxidative stability of FSR. In particular, the FSR incorporating of 0.5 wt% of rGO could maintain more than 85% of tensile strength after aging at 230°C for 72 h. The FSR incorporating of 0.5 wt% of rGO can maintain more than 90% of initial weight after aging at 350°C for 12 h. The experiment of scavenging hydroxyl radical by rGO, and quantum chemistry calculation indicated rGO containing aryloxy radicals can scavenge the initial radicals during thermal degradation of FSR, which might be prime reason for the antioxidant properties of rGO.

To improve interfacial adhesion to rubber matrix, a lower cost surface modification strategy of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber was proposed by replacing expensive dopamine with the two-component system of catechol/tetraethylenepentamine (CAT/TEPA) and then depositing nano zinc oxide (ZnO NPs). By Michael addition reaction or Schiff base reaction between CAT and TEPA, the CAT/TEPA layer was coated on the fiber surface, and further served as a secondary functional platform to realize ZnO NPs deposition through coordination. The surface morphology, chemical structure and composition, wettability and thermal property of the UHMWPE fibers were investigated to evaluate the process and effect of the surface modification. The results of the single-filament tensile test indicated that the tensile strength of the UHMWPE fibers has no deterioration after the modification treatment. In comparison with the original fiber, the pull-out test showed that the highest interface adhesion between the modified UHMWPE fibers and rubber matrix increased by 80.4%. Additionally, it was found that the appropriate zinc ion concentration played an important role in the modification effect.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of tooth support tissues leading to progressive destruction of periodontal soft tissues as well as alveolar bone, and can be treated with anti-inflammatory and bone-protective agents to prevent disease progression. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a natural polyphenolic compound with anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and bone tissue repair efficacy. In this work, we synthesized a thermosensitive hydrogel matrix of acetylated carboxymethyl chitosan (A-CC), and firstly applied for periodontal local drug delivery. The biocompatible CAPE-loaded A-CC hydrogel (CAPE-A-CC) has the advantages of forming a drug depot in situ, sustained release and precisely improving the drug concentration in the lesion sites compared with traditional systemic administration. In addition, CAPE-A-CC could significantly inhibit the expression of inflammatory cytokines of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-17 in macrophages, and increased the expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPDLSC) related to osteogenesis. This study develops a novel in situ thermosensitive hydrogel delivery system to improve the therapeutic potential of natural active ingredient for periodontitis therapy.

In order to give epoxy resin good flame retardance, a novel bio-based flame retardant based on 2-aminopyrimidine (referred to as VAD) was synthesized from renewable vanillin as one of the starting materials. Its structure was confirmed by NMR and mass spectra. The epoxy resins containing VAD were prepared by utilizing 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM) as a co-curing agent, and their flame-retardant, mechanical and thermal properties and corresponding mechanisms were studied. VAD accelerated the cross-linking reaction of DDM and E51 (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A). 12.5 wt% VAD made the epoxy resin achieve UL-94 V-0 rating and its limited oxygen index (LOI) value increase from 22.4% to 32.3%. The cone calorimetric testing results revealed the decline in the values of total heat release (THR) and peak of heat release rate (pk-HRR) and the obvious enhancement of residue yield. A certain amount of VAD enhanced the flame inhibition, charring and barrier effects, resulting in good flame retardance of the epoxy resin. Furthermore, the tensile strength, flexural strength and flexural modulus of the epoxy resin with 12.5 wt% loading of VAD were 6.5%, 14.9%, 15.2% higher than those of EP, indicating the strengthening effect of VAD. This work guarantees VAD to be a promising flame retardant for enhancing the fire retardancy of epoxy resin without compromising its mechanical properties.

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is a widely used plastics in different industries. It is an intrinsically hard and brittle polymer and requires the use of plasticizers to improve the processability. Commonly used phthalate-based plasticizers have serious toxicity issues and we present alternatives based on epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and epoxidized cardanol esters (ECEs). ECEs are synthesized from cardanol and three fatty acids (oleic, ricinoleic, and myristic) using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC) as a coupling agent. Their structure and purity are confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance. Moreover, plasticized PVC films are prepared using a solvent-free method. The replacement of 10 phr of ESO with 5 phr of ECE improves the plasticizing power due to the co-solvency effect. Mechanical properties and thermal stability of plasticized PVC films are correlated with the chain length and the number of epoxy groups in ECE. The best plasticizing effect is observed for epoxidized cardanol-myristate (ECD-MA). ECD-MA as a shorter-chain secondary plasticizer is more compatible with ESO and allows higher conformational mobility of PVC chains. PVC/30ESO/5ECD-MA polymer exhibits an exceptionally high initial thermal decomposition temperature (314.4°C) while preserving moderate ductility and tensile strength (263.4% and 23.3 MPa). Overall, this study highlights the potential applicability of ECD-MA in combination with ESO as a sustainable, bio-based plasticizer and heat stabilizer for flexible PVC products.

The elasmobranchs can sense the weak electric field signals of marine environment and other lives to adjust follow-up activities by the jelly in their ampullae of Lorenzini, which provides a new research route for the development of ocean exploration, locating of underwater object, underwater navigation and communication. Inspired by such a characteristic of jelly, this paper presents a novel electric-field-sensitive hydrogel in response to weak electric field stimuli in surroundings. The hydrogel is made from I-carrageenan (IC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) by the way of blending. The effects of CNCs on the performances of hydrogels have been investigated via the characterization of both IC/CNC blending hydrogel and pure IC hydrogel. Swelling experiments show that the equilibrium swelling ratio of hydrogel is positively related to the mass ratio of IC to CNCs. Electric field sensitivity experiments indicates that the IC/CNC blending hydrogel has a higher sensitivity than the pure IC hydrogel by comparing the bending angles of hydrogels under different electric fields, and the maximum bending angle, 0.5°, of blending hydrogel remains under the 1 mV/cm electric field. The blending hydrogel sensitive to weak electric field stimuli in this paper may provide an alternative strategy to develop intelligent response-type materials for applications of efficient underwater sensors and actuators.

A novel polyurethane containing phosphorus and nitrogen (PU) was synthesized and characterized with 1 H-NMR, FTIR, and GPC. It was served as flame retardant to blend with poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) through solution casting technique. PU particle dispersed in PLLA substrate irregularly and improved the crystallinity of PLLA. The initial decomposition temperature of PLLA composite was significantly lower, but char residue increased. Flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PU/PLLA blends were evaluated. When the blend ratio of PU/PLLA was 10 wt%, LOI was 26.8%, and UL94 test reached V-2 grade. The inflaming retarding mechanism was outlined. The tensile strength of PLLA blend was 42.8 MPa, while its elongation at break was only 2%. By adjusting PU and adding compatilizer, the balance between flame retardancy and good mechanical properties of PLLA would be controlled.
