A new approach is presented to fabricate flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate of Ag nanocubes monolayer-modified polydimethylsiloxane (Ag NCs/PDMS) through a powerful three-phase interface self-assemble method. The morphologies and crystal structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The self-assembled Ag NCs/PDMS substrate exhibited high SERS activity and good signal homogeneity, which was successfully used for quantitative detection of thiram; the detection limit reached 10 ng/mL, and the linear range is 10–1000 ng/mL. Furthermore, the flexible SERS substrates were successfully employed to detect thiram residues on factual apple samples, and trace amount (1 ng/cm 2 ) of thiram residues was detected on apple peels. The excellent SERS detection ability of self-assembled Ag NCs/PDMS substrate indicated that it will play an important role in pesticide detection in the future. Graphical abstract

Block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) blocks have been extensively used as precursors to prepare nanoporous materials with a diversity of compositions and morphologies. However, it remains desirable to facilely and efficiently transform the precursors into porous structures under mild conditions. Herein, we investigate the swelling behaviors of thin films of polystyrene-block-poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-polystyrene (PS-b-PDMS-b-PS, SDS) in linear alkanes and produce well-defined nanoporosities in the SDS films following the mechanism of selective swelling-induced pore generation. Alkanes strongly swell PDMS blocks while slightly swell PS blocks, triggering the cavitation of the PDMS minority phases. The pore sizes as well as the porosities are determined by the interaction between the alkanes and the constituent blocks. Alkanes with lower carbon numbers exhibit a stronger affinity to the copolymer, leading to larger pores. Interestingly, we find that n-hexane is able to produce a porosity >30% at room temperature within a duration as short as 1 min. We demonstrate that PDMS, which has a lower surface energy, is enriched on the film surface, thus rendering a strong hydrophobicity to the produced porous SDS films. Ethanol permeation tests demonstrate the interconnected and accessible porosities and tunable flux as well as excellent pressure resistance of the porous SDS films, implying their potential applications as selective membranes in the filtration of organic solvents and oil/water separation.

Evaporation of about 6.0 μL ethanol/water droplets with different ethanol concentrations on both planar and pillar-like polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces was studied. A small fraction of the as-fabricated pillar-like PDMS surface is Wenzel-wetted while other part Cassie-Baxter-wetted. When ethanol/water droplet evaporates on a planar PDMS surface, the contact radius continuously decreases with time, and the contact angle first increases to the maximum, then keeps unchanged and finally decreases. However, when a mixture droplet evaporates on a pillar-like PDMS surface, the droplet first experiences a relatively long constant contact radius (CCR) stage without or with the addition of ethanol. There is a spreading process in the final stage of a mixture droplet with an initial ethanol concentration of 25%. A spontaneous spreading is also found at the end of the CCR stage when a 50% ethanol/water mixture droplet evaporates on a pillar-like PDMS surface. To better understand the spreading behavior, a KH-8700 microscopy was used to record the process from top view and it was found that the solid-liquid area developed to an octagon. The average spreading speed was measured to be 0.3-0.9 μm/s. Using Taylor’s expansion theorem, excess free energy was calculated and it is concluded that evaporating droplet will spontaneously spread on a pillar-like PDMS surface when the excess energy becomes larger than the energy barrier.

The growing reliance on wireless electronic devices and future mobility has driven demand for electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding solutions that can both shield and absorb electromagnetic waves, especially at higher frequencies. Drawing inspiration from plant transpiration, Janus-structured bilayer aerogel/polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposites (JAPCs) were successfully prepared via a capillary force-driven strategy, exhibiting low-reflection and efficient EMI shielding performance. Through solvent-evaporation-assisted capillary filling, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was fully infiltrated into the bilayer aerogel containing magnetic and conductive nanomaterials and featuring an ordered asymmetric architecture, which was fabricated through a two-step unidirectional freezing process. A uniformly dispersed hollow Fe3O4 microspheres@graphene oxide (HFO@GO) nanohybrid morphology was observed in the magnetic layer of the JAPC, providing favorable impedance-matching performance. A wirelike and entangled carbon nanotube (CNTs) network was observed in the conductive layer. The tubularly oriented structure of this network enables high EMI shielding efficiency. Strong interfacial bonding between the constituent layers of the bilayer aerogel and the resulting JAPC was confirmed by SEM. The compressive strength of the bilayer aerogels increased significantly, rising from 8.0 kPa for a bilayer aerogel to 2.92 MPa for a JAPC at 40% strain. The shielding effectiveness of reflection (SER) is significantly lower for incident waves approaching from the magnetic layer compared to the conductive layer. However, the total shielding effectiveness (SET) remains nearly invariant regardless of the incident wave direction. The resulting JAPC derived from an ordered bilayer aerogel enables highly effective Ka-band EMI shielding with low reflectivity. It achieves an average SER of 2.17 dB while maintaining a maximum average SET of 59.26 dB. Owing to its unique ordered Janus configuration, an “absorption–reflection–reabsorption” attenuation pathway is established, resulting in high overall effective EMI shielding performance with minimized secondary radiation. This work provides an effective strategy for designing high-performance, low-reflection EMI shielding nanomaterials for next-generation high-frequency electronic applications.

Modified PDMS with APTES and n-hexane enables in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs. • 2D MXene overlayer on AuNPs boosts SERS sensitivity and ensures sensor stability. • The flexible MXene/Au/PDMS sensor yields a high enhancement factor of 6.5 × 10 4 . • The SERS platform achieves LODs of 10 −10 g mL −1 (TBZ) and 2.25 × 10 −10 M (TC). • Swab-sampling enables rapid detection of pesticide residues on fruit surfaces. The overuse of pesticides and antibiotics in agriculture poses significant risks to food safety and human health, necessitating rapid and sensitive detection methods. This study develops a novel, flexible Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERSa) platform by integrating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and 2D MXene nanosheets on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix for the ultra-sensitive trace detection of pesticide residues. To simplify conventional fabrication methods, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and n-hexane were directly incorporated into the PDMS prepolymer, enabling the uniform in-situ self-assembly of AuNPs via straightforward immersion in a chloroauric acid precursor. The subsequent addition of layered MXene nanosheets not only boosted SERS sensitivity through synergistic enhancement but also functioned as a protective barrier to ensure superior substrate stability. The optimized MXene/Au/PDMS sensor demonstrated exceptional SERS performance, achieving a high Enhancement Factor (EF) of 6.5 × 10 4 . Utilizing a simple swab-sampling technique, the flexible substrate effectively collected and identified trace residues directly from apple and cherry tomato surfaces. The platform achieved highly sensitive quantitative analysis, with limits of detection (LOD) reaching 10 −10 M for TBZ and tetracycline. Additionally, the sensor exhibited consistent large-scale spatial reproducibility and maintained robust environmental stability over a one-month storage period. These results confirm that the proposed flexible SERS substrate is a reliable and practical tool for the rapid, on-site monitoring of food safety hazards. With the continuous advancement of social technology, fossil fuel shortages and environmental pollution are becoming increasingly severe, leading to growing attention toward renewable energy technologies. Consequently, the development of novel eco-friendly energy devices holds significant importance. As a type of innovative eco-friendly energy device, piezoelectric materials have garnered extensive scholarly interest due to their ability to harvest energy from the environment (such as mechanical vibrations, sound waves, and human activities). Herein, we selected natural balsa wood as the substrate material in this study. After undergoing purification treatment to remove non-cellulosic impurities, the cellulose within the balsa wood retains an aerogel structure characterized by a high specific surface area and porosity. Furthermore, by introducing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) for compounding, we have achieved a maximum enhancement of 543% in the compression modulus and an increase of nearly 700% in output power, demonstrating promising application prospects in the field of wearable sensing.

To address the issues of complex fabrication and poor mechanical stability associated with traditional light-controlled interfaces, we developed a highly durable photothermal surface based on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)—carbon black (CB) composite using spin-coating and laser ablation techniques. Under 600 W/m2illumination, the 3 wt% PDMS-CB surface achieves a rapid photothermal response, reaching 104.7 °C within 150 s. Driven by a localized 0.5 W near-infrared laser, a 10 μL droplet exhibits high-speed transport at 6.53 mm/s. Uniquely, the platform enables flexible, programmable multi-modal maneuvers, including dynamic obstacle avoidance, controlled merging, and induced splitting by presetting the laser spot trajectory. At the same time, the coating surface exhibits excellent durability when subjected to external mechanical damage. Notably, because the photothermal-active CB is uniformly embedded within the durable PDMS matrix rather than superficially coated, the surface maintains reliable actuation performance (4.17 mm/s) even after multiple cyclic actuation experiments. This study provides a simple, robust solution with potential for multifunctional integration for advanced non-contact microfluidic control and lab on chip applications.

Optimizing the morphology and structure of noble metal nanomaterials is critical for the design of high-performance surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates for trace analyte detection. A plasmon-tunable SERS platform consisting of AuAg alloy nanostars anchored on a hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix was developed, which combined the chemical stability of Au and the strong localized surface plasmon resonance of Ag. AuAg alloy nanostars with sharp tips were synthesized via a galvanic replacement reaction, in which the precise modulation of Ag seed concentration enabled a morphological evolution from solid to hollow nanostructures. The optimized AuAg-3 nanostars exhibited the highest SERS response due to a dual synergistic mechanism: strong electromagnetic enhancement at the sharp branched tips and additional plasmonic enhancement from the hollow cavity through light scattering and trapping, which increased the optical path length and excitation efficiency. Furthermore, these nanostars were transferred onto a flexible PDMS film through interfacial self-assembly. The resulting hydrophobic PDMS-AuAg-3 substrate synergistically combined the strong electromagnetic enhancement from the nanostars with efficient analyte enrichment driven by the hydrophobic surface, achieving an ultra-low detection limit of 2.4 × 10−10M for methylene blue (MB). This strategy effectively balances high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility, offering a robust pathway for the development of next-generation flexible SERS sensors.

Silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) have triggered tremendous attention both in academia and industry due to their size-tunable optical properties, exceptional biocompatibility and environmental benignity. However, their less than 10 % synthetic yield and high reactive surface severely impede practical applications. Herein, we propose a strategy for gram-scalable preparation of polystyrene-capped SiNCs (PS-SiNCs) by an AIBN-initiated thermal hydrosilylation. The resulting PS-SiNCs exhibit a near-infrared emission centered at 838 nm with an absolute quantum yield of 13.28 %, and exceptional environmental stability even after storage for 180 days under ambient conditions. Subsequently, a novel nanocomposite ink is developed by incorporating the PS-SiNCs into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix reinforced with vinyl-terminated MQ silicone resin. Both printability and practicability of the PS-SiNCs/PDMS nanocomposite ink are examined on flexible substrates including cotton fabric and cellulose paper through screen-printed technique. Interestingly, the customized labels exhibit distinguishable and full patterns with NIR-I fluorescence under 365 nm UV lamp, demonstrating a promising anti-counterfeiting application. Notably, these screen-printed patterns show unprecedented PL stability even after immersed in various aqueous solutions and organic solvents. This work not only presents an innovative strategy for scalable preparation of stable and eco-friendly NIR-I luminescent materials, but also pave a new way to advanced anti-counterfeiting applications.

Superhydrophobic coatings have gained significant interest due to their ability to prevent liquid foods like juice and yogurt from adhering to the inner surfaces of containers, thus reducing waste. Superhydrophobic coatings limit its application due to its toxicity, degradability and other reasons. In this work, chitosan sodium phytate films were deposited on glass plates by layer-by-layer self-assembly (LBL), then SiO 2 nanoparticles were introduced to construct micro/nano-structures, and finally, surface modification with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was carried out to prepare superhydrophobic films. The surface of the superhydrophobic film had a micro/nano-scale structure similar to that of lotus leaves. The water contact angle (WCA) of superhydrophobic films reached 153°, and sliding contact angle (SA) was 5°. Owing to this unique structure, different liquid food droplets could roll off freely in a near spherical form on the chitosan phytate film surfaces, effectively reducing residue during container pouring. The outcomes of this study are expected to expand the potential applications of superhydrophobic chitosan films in liquid food anti-adhesion.

Flexible electronics devices with tactile perception can sense the mechanical property data of the environment and the human body, and they present a huge potential in the human health system. In particular, the introduction of ultra-flexible and self-powered characteristics to tactile sensors can effectively reduce the problems caused by rigid batteries. Herein, we report a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG), mainly consisting of an ultra-flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film with micro-pyramid-structure and sputtered aluminum electrodes, which achieves highly conformal contact with skin and the self-powered detection of human body motions. The flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film was selected as spacer layer, which made the sensor work in the contact-separation mode and endowed the perfect coupling of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction. Moreover, the controllable and uniform micro-structure PDMS film was fabricated by using the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing process, bringing a good sensitivity and high output performance to the device. The developed TENG can directly convert mechanical energy into electric energy and light up 110 green Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Furthermore, the TENG-based sensor displays good sensitivity (2.54 V/kPa), excellent linearity (R2= 0.99522) and good stability (over 30,000 cycles). By virtue of the compact size, great electrical properties, and great mechanical properties, the developed sensor can be conformally attached to human skin to monitor joint movements, presenting a promising application in wearable tactile devices. We believe that the ultra-flexible and self-powered tactile TENG-based sensor could have tremendous application in wearable electrons.

Interface compatibility is crucial to performance and robustness of nanocomposite membranes for molecular separation. In this work, a covalent crosslinking method was exploited to fabricate polydimethylsiloxane/metal-organic-frameworks (PDMS/MOFs) mixed matrix membranes with improved interfacial compatibility. Zirconium MOF particles (UiO-66-NH 2 ) were grafted with methoxysilane groups, which further formed covalent crosslinks with silanol terminated PDMS matrix. The strengthened interfacial compatibility prevented sedimentation and aggregation of MOF particles in PDMS precursor solution during the solvent evaporation process, thus the composites showed good membrane formation ability at high MOFs loading (60 wt%). Tensile strength of the hybrid membrane is 2.8 times improved while retaining good flexibility. Moreover, the CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and CO 2 permeability of the PDMS composite membrane incorporated with 40 wt% UiO-66-MS particles are improved by 1.3 times and 0.7 times, respectively.
