Development of pH response film based on potato starch/polyvinyl alcohol using Kyoho grape skin extract to monitor pork freshness

Shihui Wang,Biao Zhao,Yanling Hao,Qixiang He

In this study, the optimal ratio of starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was successfully selected by response surface method. The novel packaging films were fabricated by immobilizing Kyoho skin extract (KSE) within starch/PVA composite film by the casting method. The mechanical property, PH sensitivity, and other properties of films with different KSE content (1–5 mL) were studied. The starch/PVA film with 3 mL KSE (SPK3.0 film) showed more uniform structure than the starch/PVA film in microscope. At the same time, the film has strong mechanical properties and low water barrier capacity. Infrared analysis of the film further revealed hydrogen bond interaction between film matrix and KSE. The smart packaging film displayed distinguishable changes of color from purple to green in pH (1–13). Furthermore, the smart films possessed excellent antioxidant. Therefore, the SPK films had the potential application potential in the field of packaging. Highlights Barrier properties and antioxidant activity were enhanced significantly by the addition of KSE. The film components are connected by hydrogen bonds so that they have good compatibility. The functional film shows different colors in the range of pH 1–13.

Development of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) composites with high thermal oxidation stability using Chrysanthemum morifolium extract as a natural additive

Zhe Kong,Yueqiu Li,Tao Zhuang,Jie Zhang,Qidong Wang,Qing Yu,Guiqing Cheng,Zhongwei Wang,Yuxi Han

Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) is one of the solutions to the energy crisis and white pollution. However, the poor thermo-oxidative stability limits its wide applications. In this work, Chrysanthemum morifolium extract (CME) as a natural additive was used to modify the PBAT. The oxidation onset temperature (OOT) results showed that the CME could provide PBAT with high thermal oxidation stability. By the presence of 2.5 wt% CME, the OOT value of PBAT-CME 2.5 increased by 52°C compared with the neat PBAT. The outstanding antioxidant capacity is attributed to the excellent free radical quenching capacity of CME, whose main components consist of six kinds of phenolic compounds. Moreover, the PBAT-CME 1.5 composite could achieve the balance between the mechanical property and thermo-oxidative stability, the OOT result of PBAT-CME 1.5 increased by 42°C, the tensile strength reached 103.1%, and the elongation at break could retain 91.4% of that of neat PBAT. Besides, the processing property, degradation performance, and surface hydrophobic nature of modified PBAT samples were all improved. This work proposes a facile method to obtain completely natural biodegradable composites to expand the practical applications of PBAT. Highlights The main components in CME are phenolic compounds. CME showed high free radical scavenging efficiency. CME improved the thermal oxidation stability of the PBAT matrix. The addition of CME could still maintain good mechanical properties of PBAT. The introduction of CME promoted the degradation of PBAT films.

Crystallization, thermal, and compatibility performances of poly (butylene succinate) (PBS)/poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R) 3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) blends

Yanbo Li,Jinsuo Yu,Deyu Wei,Chengkai Liu,Yan Zhao,Junjia Bian,Shulin Sun,Hongwei Pan,Huili Yang,Lijing Han,Huiliang Zhang

Biodegradable materials provide protective properties comparable to conventional plastics while diminishing reliance on nonrenewable resources. Environmentally friendly polymer blends were prepared by melting poly(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with poly (butylene succinate) (PBS). PBS was synthesized through esterification and polycondensation using 1,4-butanediol and succinic acid, with tetrabutyltitanate as the catalyst. The PHBHHx is supplied by Bulepha®PHA Company of China, model number BP330. The effects of PHBHHx content on thermal behavior, compatibility, and thermal stability of PBS/PHBHHx blends were systematically investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that the addition of PHBHHx influenced the crystallization behavior, the crystallization temperature ( T c ) of PBS decreased meanwhile, the crystallization half-time of PBS is reduced to 1.5 min compared with neat PBS (5 min) after isothermal is crystallized at 95°C. Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM) images also revealed that crystallization rate accelerated in the blend with increasing PHBHHx content. Rheological and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated that incorporating a significant content of PHBHHx reduced compatibility between PBS and PHBHHx. Mechanical property testing indicates that the addition of PHBHHx reduced the toughness of blends. Additionally, the addition of a small amount of PHBHHx imparts a higher crystallinity (56%) and heat resistance of the PBS/PHBHHx blends (78°C) was higher than neat PBS (74°C). Highlights Laboratory synthesis of high molecular weight PBS. Optimal ratios improved crystallinity and thermal stability of blends. A systematic study of the crystallization properties of blends.

Biomass composite anion exchange membranes based on quaternized chitosan incorporated with imidazole ionic liquid-functionalized cellulose nanocrystals

Yi Zhou,Zhiliang Huang,Bangjun Deng,Chunli Gong,Hai Liu

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are the core components of fuel cells, playing a dual role in blocking anode/cathode and conducting OH − ions. In order to address the trade-off between ion conductivity and mechanical property of AEMs, imidazole ionic liquid-grafted cellulose nanocrystals (IL@CNC) was prepared and used as a novel one-dimentional nanofiller to modify quaternized chitosan (QCS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend polymer matrix to obtain IL@CNC/QCS-PVA composite membranes. The uniform dispersion of IL@CNC and the strong interaction between nanofillers and polymer matrix significantly increased the tensile strength and toughness. Moreover, with the help of 1D shape of CNC together with the grafted imidazole groups, highly-effective ion transport channels were formed inside the membrane, and ion exchange capacity was also increased, thereby sharply improving the ionic conductivity of the composite membranes. The membrane containing 4% IL@CNC demonstrated the ionic conductivities of as high as 29.3 and 76.5 mS cm −1 at room temperature and 80°C, respectively, which were 4.0 times and 3.6 times higher than those of the pure membrane under the same condition. The as-prepared composite membranes containing the biopolymer and functionalized natural nanocellulose are expected to be used as a novel type of biomass-based AEMs. Highlights Imidazole IL grafted CNC was used as a novel 1D nanofiller to modify QCS-PVA. The membrane had high ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. Providing a new way to design biomass-based AEMs with high performance.

Biomass-based crosslinked composite anion exchange membranes using bacterial cellulose template towards enhanced ionic conductivity and alkaline stability

Shijun Nie,Zhengyu Li,Xinyi Li,Xingxin Lu,Chunli Gong,Zhengguang Sun

A balanced relationship among ionic conductivity, mechanical properties and alkaline stability of anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is essential for their practical application in fuel cells. Herein, a porous substrate (BC@LDH) with hierarchical structure was constructed using natural bacterial cellulose (BC) as a template and then in situ grew inorganic hydroxide ion conductor (layered double hydroxide, LDH). The membrane was fabricated via a filling together with sol–gel crosslinking strategy after impregnating an ionomer containing both quaternary ammonium and hydroxyl groups into the porous substrate and then crosslinked by organosiloxane. Due to the synergistic enhancement effect of BC, LDH and cross-linking, the obtained membrane exhibited a tensile strength of 47.48 MPa that was 88.3% higher than that of the pure ionomer membrane, and showed an ionic conductivity of 70.7 mS cm −1 (80°C) which benefited from the introduction of ionic conductor LDH. More importantly, its alkaline stability was significantly improved and the residual conductivity ratio was still as high as 81.5% even after hot alkali treatment for 580 h. The direct methanol fuel cell assembled with this membrane exhibited a peak power density of 13.6 mW cm −2 with an open-circuit voltage of 0.72 V, indicating its potential application in biomass-based AEMs for fuel cells. Highlights Hierarchical porous substrate comprising LDHs anchored BC fiber was prepared. LDH@BC served as a reinforcing substrate and an ion transport medium. The crosslinked membrane showed significantly improved alkaline stability. The membrane had high ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. Providing a new way to design biomass-based AEMs with high performance.

A silicone-modified UV-curable pressure-sensitive adhesive initiated by redox-induced bulk polymerization, exhibiting excellent water resistance and aging resistance

Binzhi Wang,Yuewen Huang,Bin Wang,Ruixiang Zhou,Feng Wang,Hui Liu

In this study, an N, N-dimethyl-p-toluidine/benzoyl peroxide redox initiation system was used to synthesize a series of silicone-modified UV-curable acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) via bulk polymerization. The oxidizing and reducing agents were added separately but simultaneously into a mixture of monomers. The impact of varying monomer content on the PSA's properties, as well as the influence of organosilicon incorporation on water and aging resistance, was evaluated through 180° peel strength and initial adhesion tests. The results demonstrated that the PSA without organosilicon modification exhibited a maximum peel strength of 7.21 N/25 mm and an initial adhesion of 8.41 N/25 mm. Although the introduction of the organosilicon structure reduced both peel strength and initial adhesion, it notably improved the PSA's water resistance and aging resistance. Highlights Synthesis without solvent using redox initiator system. UV-cured system to enhance molecular weight and adhesion. Introduction of silane structure to improve water and aging resistance. Adhesion performance testing on different substrates (PET and BOPP).

Polymeric superabsorbing composite prepared using a glow-discharge electrolysis plasma for the removal of divalent heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions and its swelling properties

Xinggang Wang,Jinzhang Gao,Wu Yang

A novel polymeric superabsorbing composite was prepared using the graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AANa, 70% neutralization with NaOH) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS) onto the hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) [HEC- g -P(AANa- co -AMPS)], which was initiated by means of a glow-discharge electrolysis plasma rather than a chemical initiator. The composite material was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). We obtained absorbencies of 2490 g g −1 for distilled water and of 109 g g −1 for 0.9 wt% NaCl solution. Results show that the maximum adsorption capacities for Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), and Hg(II) from aqueous solution were 974.84, 975.43, 1535.52, 1970.47, and 1879.53 mg g −1 , respectively. The adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir isotherm model very well. Adsorption kinetics results indicate that the fast adsorption rate followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics equations. POLYM. Study on modified graphene/butyl rubber nanocomposites. I. Preparation and characterization

Huiqin Lian,Shuxin Li,Kelong Liu,Liangrui Xu,Kuisheng Wang,Wenli Guo

Butyl rubber, IIR nanocomposites based on modified graphene sheets, were fabricated by solution processing followed by compression molding. MG was prepared from natural graphite, NG through graphite oxide route. X-ray diffraction showed that the exfoliated MG was homogeneously dispersed in the IIR matrix with doping levels of 1-10 wt% as evidenced by the lack of the characteristic graphite reflection in the composites. In contrast, the graphite retained its stacking order and showed the sharp characteristic peak in the NG-IIR composites. Scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of the IIR matrix showed that MG nanofillers exhibited better compatibility than NG did. The mechanical properties of the MG-IIR nanocomposites were significantly improved due to the efficient distribution of the large surface area MG sheet. The tensile modulus of nanocomposite with doping level of MG 10 wt% was 16 times that of the pure IIR. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 2011. © 2011 Society of Plastics Engineers

Removal of methylene blue dyes from wastewater using cellulose-based superadsorbent hydrogels

Yiming Zhou,Shiyu Fu,Hao Liu,Shaoping Yang,Huaiyu Zhan

Superadsorbent cellulose-graft-acrylic acid (C-g-AA) hydrogels were successfully prepared via free radical polymerization in phosphoric acid solution. Phosphoric acid solution provides a homogeneous reaction system. The C-g-AA hydrogels have a porous network inner structure with cellulose as the backbone. The introduced carboxyl groups enable the C-g-AA hydrogels with good swelling property (swelling ratio 7327%) and excellent MB adsorption capacity (equilibrium adsorption amount 2197 mg g −1 ). The dynamic swelling behaviors of the hydrogels were tested, water intake of hydrogels followed a non-Fickian type diffusion. The effects of mole ratio of AA to cellulose, the pH of adsorption medium and the initial MB concentration on dye adsorption capacity of hydrogels were investigated. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics fit the Langmuir model and the Pseudo-second-order model well, respectively. Desorption was carried out in weak acid solution and 70% MB could be removed, suggesting the C-g-AA hydrogels had the potential for reuse. POLYM. ENG. Microfluidic-assisted controllable formation of millimeter-scale poly(divinylbenzene) foam shells

Xiaojun Wang,Jiayi Zhu,Ting Shao,Shufan Chen,Xuan Luo,Lin Zhang

We demonstrated a practical microfluidic approach to fabricate extremely monodisperse millimeter-sized poly(divinylbenzene) (PDVB) foam shells with the comparable double emulsion templates. At millimeter scale, the emulsification process was more complex and more difficult to control due to the very large characteristic sizes and velocities. A new kind of three-dimension co-axial microfluidic chip including a Y-shaped compound channels was designed to maintain more stable and robust flow field and regular emulsification. The hydrodynamic features of the double-emulsion droplet formation were investigated. The results showed perfect encapsulation and continuous emulsification could be obtained by one-step dripping (Ca outer ∈ (0.018,0.09)). The size of the outlet channel would be comparable with the target droplet. Besides, droplet diameters could similarly be plotted as a function of capillary number close to the general microfluidic ones. After photo-polymerization and supercritical drying, spherical and concentric PDVB foam shells were obtained to satisfy the inertial fusion energy experiments with large diameter (3–5.45 mm), thin wall thickness (50–250 μm), low density (50–300 mg/cm 3 ), and a less than 0.1% polydispersity. Controlling the stereostructure of non-planar ring to induce the transition from plastic to elastomer in poly(butylene adipate-co-1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylate) and implement of polylactic acid toughness

Jia Qiu,Fei Liu,Junwu Zhang,Jing Chen,Haining Na,Jin Zhu

The controllable polyesters with high overall performance are obtained by tuning the stereostructure of 1,4-cyclohexylene ring moieties (CHRMs) in poly(butylene adipate- co −1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate) (PBAC). After increasing the number of irregular cis -CHRMs in the polyester, PBAC can transform from semicrystalline polymer to amorphous one. PBAC with 58% cis -CHRMs starts to exhibit good elasticity with shape recovery of 60% at 250% deformation, indicating the transition from plastic to thermoplastic elastomer. Through blending with polylactic acid (PLA), the elastic PBAC greatly enhances the impact strength of PLA to 7.5 kJ/m 2 . While the tensile elongation at break is dramatically improved to 161% with the addition of plastic PBAC. The mechanism related to the stereostructure of non-planar ring of PBAC on the properties of PLA is also analyzed. Therefore, this research suggests a particular way to build non-planar ring contained polyesters to modify PLA with high toughness. POLYM. ENG. Three-dimensional skeleton assembled by nickel foam/silicon carbide as filler in polyurethane composites with high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation

Jincheng Zhu,Mengqing Ren,Ming Chen,Lili Wu

High thermally conductive polymer composites have garnered significant attention due to their exceptional performance, given the ever-decreasing size of electronic devices and the rise in power densities. Herein, a new three-dimensional (3D) thermal conductivity network structure has been successfully prepared using double fillers of nickel foam (NF) and modified silicon carbide particles (KSiC). The study compared the effect of different filler contents on the thermal conductivity of composites. Compared to conventional composites, those based on 3D filling networks have significantly improved thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of the NF/KSiC/PU composite containing 50 wt% KSiC was 1.18 Wm −1 K −1 , exceeding the cumulative thermal conductivity of the NF/PU and KSiC/PU 50 wt% composites, and 637.5% greater than that of neat PU. Meanwhile, the synthesized NF/KSiC/PU composite maintained a high electrical resistivity above 10 12 Ω·cm and good mechanical properties. This approach might offer novel solutions for developing high-quality packaging materials for advanced electronic devices with exceptional thermal and mechanical properties. Highlights Using SiC and NF Constructs a dual filler network. The dual filler thermal conductivity network can generate synergistic effects. Improving thermal conductivity compared to original polyurethane. Maintaining a high electrical resistivity and good mechanical properties.
