The development of porous films with biodegradability, high electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding, and thermal conducting performance for advanced electronics is urgent. Herein, a superthin and flexible film composed of PBAT/MWCNT and PEDOT:PSS/PEO/SWCNT is fabricated through combining electrospinning and spin-coating. In this work, the content of PEO and SWCNT should be controlled to 1 and 10 wt % for achieving the optimal layered-cavity structure within the film, guaranteeing the proper flow ability of the suspension. The robustly constructed layered-cavity structure within the film allows the electromagnetic waves to suffer multiple reflections, which enhances the EMI shielding performance. Meanwhile, the structure also plays an important role in promoting the electric and heat conduction of the film. Consequently, the film with a thickness of 0.14 mm exhibits the most optimal EMI shielding efficiency (SE) of 26.02 dB, electrical conductivity of 40.371 S/m, and thermal diffusion coefficient of 0.124 mm2/s. The EMI SE/thickness is about 185.86 dB/mm, attaining a cutting-edge level compared to reported polymer-based films. Besides, the PEO or SWCNT content should be controlled, and the two-side spin-coating is also needed for thicker films. This work offers a method to develop superthin biodegradable films with excellent performance, positioning it as a strong alternative for flexible electronics.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage due to their high cost-effectiveness and safety. Alloy anodes exhibit significantly higher specific capacities compared to those of carbonaceous anode materials, holding great promise for enhancing the energy density of SIBs. However, their practical application is severely hindered by substantial volume expansion, sluggish reaction kinetics, and continuous fracture reformation of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, a multifunctional composite binder system was designed for the Sn anode, which was composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), sodium alginate (SA), and sodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI). The PEO-SA-NaTFSI (PSN) binder integrates ternary synergistic functions: robust adhesion between the active material and current collector, enhanced Na+ transport kinetics, and formation of a stable NaF-rich SEI. Therefore, the Sn-PSN anode achieves an outstanding sodium storage performance with a high capacity of 583.4 mA h g–1 at a current density of 10 A g–1 and 77% capacity retention after 1500 cycles. In addition, the Sn-PSN||Na3V2(PO4)3 full battery can maintain 81% capacity after 200 cycles with an electrode energy density of 169.0 W h kg–1. This work provides a multifunctional binder design strategy with broad application prospects for high-performance anodes of SIBs.

All-solid-state lithium batteries with lean (ultrathin) lithium anodes and polymer-based electrolytes e.g., polyethylene oxide (PEO), can potentially offer high energy density , reduced processing cost and improved mechanical contact at electrolyte-electrode interfaces. The non-uniform lithium deposition and inadequate mechanical strength of PEO, however, tend to cause deactivated lithium and short-circuiting by Li dendrites over lithium deposition/stripping cycles; these issues become more aggravated with lean Li anodes due to the more severe volume changes. Herein, we construct a more mechanically and chemically stable lithium-electrolyte interface by coupling alloyed lean Li anodes (<50 μm) with PEO electrolytes blended with polymers of intrinsic porosity (PIMs). The lean Li anode is fabricated by a facile and scalable cold-rolling method, which leads to a uniformly alloyed lithium anode permitting epitaxial Li deposition. Meanwhile, PIM reinforces the mechanical strength of the PEO composite electrolyte, reducing the likelihood of dendrite formation/penetration. Importantly, the introduction of both GaInSnZn and the first-generation PIM has been found to reduce the interfacial charge transfer resistance via modifying the composition of solid-electrolyte interphase. The resulting full cells with lithium iron phosphate cathodes exhibit a high specific capacity of ∼160 mAh/g, i.e., ∼0.6 mAh/cm 2 with excellent retention of 93.1 % at 120 cycles.

All-solid-state lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is regarded as next-generation high energy density and safety battery system. The key challenge is to develop a compatible high-performance solid-state electrolyte. Herein, a two birds with one stone strategy is proposed to simultaneously enhance Li + conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based polymer electrolyte via the integration of Nb 2 CT x MXene. Moreover, the sheet size of Nb 2 CT x MXene is crucial for the enhancement of Li + conductivity and polysulfide adsorptivity, attributing to the difference in a specific surface area related to the percolation effect. By tuning the sheet size of Nb 2 CT x MXene from 500–300 nm to below 100 nm, the ionic conductivity of the PEO electrolyte is increased to 2.62 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 with improved Li + transference number of 0.37 at 60 °C. Furthermore, theoretical calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conjointly prove that polysulfides could be effectively adsorbed by Nb 2 CT x nanosheets via forming Nb−S bonding to inhibit their shuttle in the PEO framework. As a result, the all-solid-state Li-S cell exhibits an initial capacity of 1149 mAh·g −1 at 0.5C and good cycling stability with 491 mAh·g −1 after 200 cycles. The results demonstrate the necessity of polysulfide inhibition and the application of Nb 2 CT x MXene in PEO-based electrolytes for all-solid-state Li-S batteries. Graphic

Compared with simplex ceramic or polymer solid electrolytes, composite solid electrolyte (CSE) is more promising for its better interfacial compatibility to electrode and high ionic conductivity simultaneously. Further, the interfacial compatibility within ceramic and polymer is considered to be more and more critical to the overall performance of solid-state batteries. Avoiding the agglomeration of ceramic particles at high loadings can improve the whole intrinsic characteristic and electrochemical performance of CSEs. Herein, we designed a CSE (EO@LLZTO–PEO), which consists of composite particles (EO@LLZTO) as a filler and polyethylene oxide (PEO) as polymer matrix. EO@LLZTO was prepared by chemically grafting polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether methacrylate (MPEG-MAA) on the micro-sized Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) particles. By introducing of polymer containing EO segments onto LLZTO, the interfacial compatibility between LLZTO and PEO matrix is highly enhanced, and the intrinsic Li+ complexation capability of MPEG-MAA is improved, even at the high loading of garnet. EO@LLZTO–PEO shows a high ionic conductivity (1.91 mS cm–1), a broad electrochemical window (∼5.2 V vs Li/Li+), and a high lithium ion transference number (0.72). The Li/EO@LLZTO–PEO/Li battery also exhibits a long cycle stability (over 1200 h of cycling). Moreover, all-solid-state batteries with LiFePO4 and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathodes exhibit excellent cycling stability and rate performance. Consequently, enhancing the interfacial compatibility between organic and inorganic electrolytes is identified to be one of the crucial strategies for commercial solid-state lithium batteries.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are considered promising candidates for next-generation high-safety lithium batteries, however, long-termly limited by their inferior ionic conductivity, low lithium ionic transference number, and insufficient electrochemical stability, especially at room temperature. Herein, we report a novel PEO-based SPE with the synergistic effect of black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets and a cryogenic method, which combined the advantages of the fast Li+ pathways of BP nanosheets and low PEO crystallization induced by the cryogenic process. The addition of BP nanosheets could promote the dissociation of LiTFSI and provide long-range Li+-migration pathways in the BP/PEO interface. The cryogenic strategy could reduce the sizes of the PEO crystals apart from the BP/PEO interface and further improve the ionic conductivity and Li+-transference number of the composite SPEs. As a result, the cryogenic PEO-based SPEs with only 0.05% wt BP nanosheets (C-BP SPEs) displayed an excellent ionic conductivity of 3.38 × 10−5 S cm−1, which was 15.7 times higher than that of pristine PEO SPEs, and a wide electrochemical stability at 30 °C. NCM622/SPEs/Li cells with C-BP SPEs could provide a high discharge capacity of 150.2 mA h g−1 at 0.1C as well as satisfactory cycling performance with a capacity retention of 88.1% after 500 cycles at 0.5C at 30 °C. Importantly, pouch cells were assembled to demonstrate the suitability of the C-BP SPEs for practical application and displayed good electrochemical performance.

The performance of lithium batteries is largely dependent on the ionic conductivity within robust solid electrolytes. Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolytes, however, have a low lithium ionic conductivity, which limits the hop of Li+. Herein, a novel PEO-based composite electrolyte is prepared that contains nonstoichiometric transition molybdenum trioxide (MoO3–x) nanosheets as fillers to improve the ionic conductivity. The MoO3–x nanosheets containing many oxygen vacancies can cross-link with PEO chains to reduce the energy barrier of Li+ migration and the matrix crystallinity, leading to an increase in the lithium-ion transference number (up to 0.56) and a high ionic conductivity (up to 6 × 10–4 S cm–1) at 60 °C. Meanwhile, the incorporation of MoO3–x nanosheets alleviates the decomposition of the electrolyte, enhancing the tensile strength by ∼4 times compared to PEO. As a result, a LiFePO4/Li cell with PEO/LiTFSI/MoO3–x (PLM3–x) delivers an excellent rate capability, high capacity, and lifespan during high rates (2 C, ≥10 000 cycles), which demonstrates a facile yet effective strategy toward high-performance lithium batteries.

PEO-based solid electrolytes are eagerly anticipated for being explored in batteries with remarkable performance. Their narrower electrochemical window and weak mechanical strength, however, limit the potential for wide application in safe and high-capacity electronic devices. Herein, a self-healing solid-state electrolyte (PEO@BPIL) is fabricated by the incorporation of an imidazolium-based polymerized ionic liquid (poly(ethylene glycol) monomethacrylate (PEGMA)) block polymer into PEO, and the influence of copolymer configuration on electrochemical performances of the system is investigated in-depth. In addition to reducing the crystallinity of PEO, an inimitable orderly and orderless microphase separation structure is introduced in PEO@BPIL, which brings about a “green fast track” for Li-ion migration. This contributes to a lithium-ion transference number of 0.63 that is an unsurpassed level. The electrochemical stability window of the optimized PEO@BPIL can achieve 5.0 V (vs Li+/Li). As a result, the capacity and endurance discharge performances for PEO@BPIL based cells are significantly improved. Moreover, the bountiful charged ions on the scaffold endue the electrolyte with generous interactions, conferring the PEO@BPIL predominant adhesiveness toward lithium metal (the hanging weight = 200 g) and standout self-healing ability (recovering time <30 min, 60 °C). The restriction toward lithium dendrite is thus enhanced. The PEO@BPIL-based laminate polymer battery presents ascendant antifolding deformation ability and still exhibits good electrochemical performances after reiterative damage. In combination with the high flame retardancy of polymerized ionic liquid, this work affords a splendid idea for an emerging power supply battery.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are among the most promising candidates for solid-state batteries due to their easy processibility, interface compatibility, and cost efficiency. However, the trade-off between the ionic conductivity and mechanical strength of SPEs, which has persisted for decades, hinders their application in solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries. In this study, the aim is to break this trade-off by utilizing poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) nanofibers as a mechanically strong backbone and polyethylene oxide (PEO) as an ionically conductive network. The PBO/PEO composite electrolyte reduces the crystallinity of PEO while increasing the mechanical strength (74.4 MPa, ≈14 times that of PEO). Thus, PBO/PEO simultaneously improves ionic conductivity and mechanical strength both at room temperature and elevated temperatures, enabling uniform and smooth Li deposition. Thus, a long cycle life of solid-state Li symmetric cells for 1000 h at 60 °C is achieved, and stable cycling of solid-state Li metal full batteries at 60 °C and even 100 °C. Furthermore, the solid-state pouch cell using this SPE exhibits excellent performance reliably after bending. The study clearly indicates that simultaneously improving mechanical properties and conductivity is the indispensable path to the practical application of solid-state electrolytes.

All-solid-state batteries are promising candidates for the next-generation safer batteries. However, a number of obstacles have limited the practical application of all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs), such as moderate ionic conductivity at room temperature. Here, unlike most of the previous approaches, superior performances of ASSLBs are achieved by greatly reducing the thickness of the solid-state electrolyte (SSE), where ionic conductivity is no longer a limiting factor. The ultrathin SSE (7.5 µm) is developed by integrating the low-cost polyethylene separator with polyethylene oxide (PEO)/Li-salt (PPL). The ultrathin PPL shortens Li + diffusion time and distance within the electrolyte, and provides sufficient Li + conductance for batteries to operate at room temperature. The robust yet flexible polyethylene offers mechanical support for the soft PEO/Li-salt, effectively preventing short-circuits even under mechanical deformation. Various ASSLBs with PPL electrolyte show superior electrochemical performance. An initial capacity of 135 mAh g −1 at room temperature and the high-rate capacity up to 10 C at 60 °C can be achieved in LiFePO 4 /PPL/Li batteries. The high-energy-density sulfur cathode and MoS 2 anode employing PPL electrolyte also realize remarkable performance. Moreover, the ASSLB can be assembled by a facile process, which can be easily scaled up to mass production.

Incorporating plasticizers is an effective way to facilitate conduction of ions in solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). However, this conductivity enhancement often comes at the cost of reduced mechanical properties, which can make the electrolyte membrane more difficult to process and increase safety hazards. Here, a novel crosslinking strategy, wherein metal-alkoxy-terminated polymers can be crosslinked by precisely controlling the content of H 2 O as an initiator, is proposed. As a proof-of-concept, trimethylaluminum (TMA)-functionalized poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) is used to demonstrate that ultrafine Al–O nanoclusters can serve as nodes to crosslink PEO chains with a wide range of molecular weights from 10 000 to 8 000 000 g mol −1 . The crosslinked polymer network can incorporate a high concentration of plasticizers, with a total weight percentage over 75%, while still maintaining excellent stretchability (4640%) and toughness (3.87 × 10 4 kJ m −3 ). The resulting electrolyte demonstrates high ionic conductivity (1.41 mS cm −1 ), low interfacial resistance toward Li metal (48.1 Ω cm 2 ), and a wide electrochemical window (>4.8 V vs Li + /Li) at 30 °C. Furthermore, the LiFePO 4 /Li battery shows stable cycle performance with a capacity retention of 98.6% (146.3 mAh g −1 ) over 1000 cycles at 1C (1C = 170 mAh g −1 ) at 30 °C.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have gained considerable attention in the application of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs), but the low ionic conductivity at room temperature and inferior interfacial compatibility largely drag the practical development of SPEs. Herein, a ketone-containing poly(allyl acetoacetate) (PAAA) based polymer electrolyte is designed and prepared for the first time. The structure of ester and ketone groups provides PAAA polymers with not only strong dissociation of lithium salts but also weak coordination interactions with Li + ions. Thus the prepared PAAA polymer electrolytes show excellent ion conductive behavior with ionic conductivity as high as 1.1 × 10 -4 S cm −1 at 30 °C. Moreover, the PAAA polymer electrolytes still maintain superior viscoelasticity without compromising mechanical integrity. When assembling cells, the reduction-tolerant poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer electrolytes are employed as interlayers between the PAAA SPEs and lithium electrodes in order to improve interfacial stability. As a result, the hierarchical polymer electrolytes possess wide electrochemical window above 4.8 V, thus matching well with LiFePO 4 or Li 1.2 Ni 0.2 Mn 0.6 O 2 high-voltage cathode. The hierarchical structure does not affect interfacial contact, and the Li/PEO-PAAA-PEO/Li cells show low interfacial resistance and stable striping/plating behavior for at least 500 h at 0.2 mA cm −2 and 60 °C. This study enriches carbonyl-based polymer electrolytes by allying ketone with ester groups, and provides guidance for designing novel high-performance polymer electrolytes for practical application.
