Preparation and characterization of unidirectional water conducting double-layer PVA/CS/ZnO-PLA/ZnO nanofiber membranes for wound healing

Zhiyuan Chen,Binjie Xin

During the wound healing process, the surrounding tissue fluid plays a crucial role. However, excessive exudate can lead to wound infection and over-hydration, thereby delaying the healing process. Therefore, developing a novel wound dressing that can unidirectionally remove excess biological fluids and effectively inhibit bacterial infection is particularly important. This study successfully utilized electrospinning technology to prepare a nanofiber dual-layer membrane with unidirectional water transport functionality. Its inner layer consists of polylactic acid (PLA) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, providing excellent hydrophobic and antibacterial properties. The outer layer is composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), chitosan (CS), and nanoscale zinc oxide (ZnO) nanofibers, offering outstanding hydrophilicity and liquid absorption capability. Experimental results demonstrate that this nanofiber dual-layer membrane exhibits outstanding physical, chemical, and biological properties, with a mechanical strength of up to 6.4 Mpa and breathability 17.47 mm/s and antibacterial property is outstanding. In practical applications, this dressing can effectively expel excess biological fluids within just 5 s, preventing wound over-hydration and providing an innovative and feasible solution for the effective treatment of chronic wounds.

Preparation and characteristics of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils from bamboo pulp and their oxygen-barrier application in PLA films

Wu Bozhen,Geng Biyao,Chen Yufei,Liu Hongzhi,Li Guangyao,Wu Qiang

Bleached bamboo kraft pulp was pretreated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO)- mediated oxidation using a TEMPO/NaBr/NaClO system at pH = 10 in water to facilitate mechanical disintegration into TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TO-CNs). A series of TO-CNs with different carboxylate contents were obtained by varying amounts of added NaClO. An increase in carboxylate contents results in aqueous TO-CN dispersions with higher yield, zeta potential values, and optical transparency. When carboxylate groups are introduced, the DPv value of the TO-CNs remarkably decreases and then levels off. And the presence of hemicellulose in the pulp is favorable to TEMPO oxidization. After the oxidization, the native cellulose I crystalline structure and crystal size of bamboo pulp are almost maintained. TEM micrographs revealed that the degree of nanofibrillation is directly proportional to the carboxylate contents. With increasing carboxylate contents, the free-standing TO-CN films becomes more transparent and mechanically stronger. The oxygen permeability of PLA films drastically decreases from 355 for neat PLA to 8.4 mL∙m –2 ∙d –1 after coating a thin layer of TO-CN with a carboxylate content of 1.8 mmol∙g –1 . Therefore, inexpensive and abundant bamboo pulp would be a promising starting material to isolate cellulose nanfibrils for oxygen-barrier applications.

Lignin migration-driven construction of reed fibers with phosphate-rich interphases and their application in flame-retardant PLA composites

Li Meng,Huang Yuhui,Li Xingong,Wu Yiqiang,Zuo Yingfeng

Natural fiber reinforced polylactic acid (NF/PLA) composites are attractive sustainable materials, yet their broader engineering use is limited by weak interphase load transfer and rapid, dripping combustion. A lignin migration driven interphase phosphorylation strategy was proposed to construct a continuous phosphate-rich interphase on reed fibers, enabling simultaneous reinforcement and flame retardancy in PLA. A mild and efficient solvent activation step induces in- situ lignin deposition and generates a reactive, adhesive fiber surface, followed by aqueous phosphorylation to covalently introduce phosphate functionalities. Crucially, this strategy preserves the intrinsic structural integrity of the macroscopic fibers while simultaneously tailoring the interface for enhanced adhesion and flame retardancy. As a result, the reconstructed interphase strengthens fiber matrix adhesion and promotes condensed phase charring while improving melt resistance to dripping. At a 30 wt% modified fiber loading, the composite reaches a limiting oxygen index of 33.0% and achieves a UL-94 V-0 rating with no cotton ignition. Cone calorimetry shows 38% and 27% reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release relative to neat PLA. Meanwhile, tensile strength increases by about 15% and notched impact toughness by about 270%, evidencing effective load transfer. The lignin enriched, phosphate functionalized interphase synchronizes rapid melt stabilization with the formation of a compact protective char, thereby reconciling reinforcement with fire safety. This scalable interphase-engineering strategy offers a sustainable route to high performance PLA composites for transportation, electronics, packaging, and related applications.

Synergistic flame retardancy and mechanical reinforcement of bio-based PLA composites using polyphenol-assisted ammonium polyphosphate and sugarcane fiber

Bin Xue,Danxiang Wei,Jun Li,Yudong Wang,Haifeng Pan,Wei Wang

Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) is characterized by inherent flammability and limited mechanical performance, which restrict its engineering applications. In this study, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was utilized as the primary flame retardant, while tannic acid (TA) and tea polyphenols (TP) acted as natural synergists. By combining these components with steam-exploded sugarcane fibers (SCF), we developed a fully bio-based intumescent flame-retardant PLA composite. The effects of polyphenol-assisted APP on thermal stability, flame retardancy, mechanical properties, and flame-retardant mechanisms were systematically investigated. The results indicate that polyphenols significantly enhance the charring ability of APP and improve the high-temperature thermal stability of the composites. Cone calorimetry demonstrates notable reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release, along with an increased fire performance index. At a total flame-retardant loading of 13 wt%, the composites achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating with effective suppression of melt dripping. However, a moderate reduction in tensile strength and elongation at break was observed due to the incorporation of inorganic flame-retardant components. The addition of SCF partially mitigates the mechanical deterioration caused by the incorporation of flame-retardants. Char analysis indicates a condensed-phase-dominated mechanism, wherein polyphenols serve as efficient carbon sources and synergize with APP to form a dense, phosphorus-rich char layer. Notably, tea polyphenols exhibit slightly higher charring efficiency than tannic acid.

Influence of alkyl side chain length in PLA polyols on the mechanics of bio-based waterborne polyurethane synthetic leather

Jinghua Du,Wenhe Guo,Shuang Zheng,Lei Yang,Xinrui Sun,Xiaoyu Dong,Chenxi Wang,Junjie Wang,Haoyan Yin,Xiaohua Hou,Chao Liu,Guobing Zhang,Yunsheng Ding

Sustainability is an important direction for polyurethane synthetic leather, polylactide polyols are favored due to their high bio-based content and biodegradability. However, polyurethanes containing segments formed from polylactide polyols are hard and brittle, which limits their application. To address this, a strategy was proposed to improve mechanical properties of bio-based waterborne polyurethane (BWPU) through introducing alkyl side chains into molecule of polylactide diols (PLA-OH). PLA-OH with molecular weight 1000 g/mol were synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of l -lactide, initiated by diols with different alkyl side chain lengths (n-butyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl). A series of BWPU with various alkyl side chain lengths were prepared by using PLA-OH, bio-based poly(oxy-1,3-propanediyl) (PO 3 G), isophorone diisocyanate, sodium polyethersulfonate and 1,4-cyclohexanediol as main components. The influence of the alkyl side chains of PLA-OH on the properties of BWPU was studied in detail, including hydrogen bonded, thermal properties, mechanical properties, water contact angle, stress relaxation and creep behavior. The results showed that the introduction of alkyl side chains significantly improved the mobility of polyurethane segments, the relaxation rate of the BWPU was accelerated and the creep recovery rate was significantly increased. When the side chains of polylactide diols is n-hexyl, PLAC6-BWPU achieves an optimal balance of low modulus (16.5 MPa), high elongation at break (1043%), and high strength (10.2 MPa). The synthetic leather surface layer prepared with PLAC6-BWPU exhibits excellent abrasion resistance and flex resistance, enduring over 50,000 rubbing cycles and more than 30,000 flex cycles without surface damage or cracking, making them highly suitable for applying in high-performance synthetic leather manufactures.

Multifunctional interface engineering: Tailoring mechanical and UV-resistant properties of PLA/PBAT-based composites via epoxy-functionalized carbon dots

Sen Qun,Song Liu,Lijia Yang,Meiru Du,Jiani Zhou,Yu Zhu,Ying Ling,Liping Yuan,Shaohua Zeng,Jun Guan

Epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) are synthesized via a hydrolytic condensation. • OCDs provide robust chemical interfacial bridges between PLA and PBAT. • Nanoscale OCDs cores refine the phase morphology via physical interactions. • Interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT is enhanced via a synergy of physical and chemical interactions. • OCDs give PLA/PBAT-based composites superior UV resistance. Biodegradable polymers like poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) hold significant promise for sustainable medical materials; however, their widespread application, particularly in demanding fields such as medical packaging materials, is hindered by inherent challenges including poor interfacial compatibility in blends and a general lack of functional properties like ultraviolet (UV) resistance. To address these limitations, this work introduced an innovative interfacial engineering strategy utilizing epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) as a multifunctional compatibilizer for blending PLA and PBAT. The surface epoxy groups of OCDs underwent in-situ ring-opening reactions with terminal functional groups of PLA and PBAT during melt processing, establishing robust covalent bridges that fundamentally enhanced interfacial adhesion. This chemical compatibilization, synergized with the nanoscale effect of well-dispersed OCDs, led to a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties, with optimal increases of 47.7% in tensile strength and 23.4% in tensile modulus. Simultaneously, the intrinsic UV absorption of OCDs conferred exceptional UV-resistant capability to the PLA/PBAT-based composite, with absorption intensities at key wavelengths enhanced by up to 775%. Furthermore, the PLA/PBAT-based composites demonstrated modified thermal degradation behavior and improved melt strength. This multifunctional OCDs-filled PLA/PBAT composite integrated enhanced mechanical properties and excellent UV-resistant performance, demonstrating significant potential for advanced medical applications.

Crosslinked-AuNPs@CD-MOF Incorporated into PLA-Zein Composite Film with Humidity-Responsive Antimicrobial Release for Agaricus bisporus Preservation

Tahirou Sogore,Meimei Guo,Jin Huang,Xinyu Liao,Tian Ding,Mofei Shen

Foodborne pathogens cause hundreds of millions of illnesses annually, underscoring the urgent need for advanced antimicrobial food packaging materials. The objective of this study was to develop a crosslinked cyclodextrin metal–organic framework, loaded with gold nanoparticles (CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF) and integrated into a PLA-Zein composite film with humidity-responsive antimicrobial release, as a sustainable and high-performance packaging solution to address the critical limitations of conventional materials in controlling microbial contamination during food storage. Therefore, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized via a green approach using CD-MOFs as stabilizers and p-coumaric acid as a natural reducing agent, then crosslinked with diphenyl carbonate (DPC) to produce CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF. Crosslinking conditions were optimized to a CD-MOF:DPC ratio of 1:1, 1080 min reaction time, and 80 °C, preserving the cubic morphology and crystalline structure while transforming burst release into sustained antimicrobial activity againstE. coliandS. aureusover 7 days. Then, the incorporation of CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF into PLA-Zein films yielded a composite packaging material with favorable mechanical and barrier properties, including a water vapor transmission rate of 539.44 g/m2·24 h and an oxygen permeability of 235.90 cm3/m2·24 h·0.1 MPa. Progressive elimination ofE. coli,S. aureus, andL. monocytogenesover 7 days was confirmed, with antimicrobial efficacy originating exclusively from the CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF component. Application onAgaricus bisporusover 12 days of refrigerated storage demonstrated superior preservation performance: mushrooms inoculated withL. monocytogenesand packaged with CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein exhibited a weight loss of only 6.20 ± 2.06%, compared to 17.74 ± 3.15% for PLA-Zein and 41.50 ± 3.01% for PE controls. Color stability was equally improved, with lightness values of 71.46 ± 1.47 retained under CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein packaging, versus 58.37 ± 0.86 for PLA-Zein and 23.34 ± 2.34 for PE. Mushrooms inoculated withE. coliandS. aureusfollowed consistent trends. These results establish CL-AuNPs@CD-MOF/PLA-Zein as a promising multifunctional antimicrobial packaging platform for sustainable food preservation.

Controlled release of magnesium ions from PLA microsphere-chitosan hydrogel complex for enhancing osteogenic and angiogenic activities in vitro

Li Li,Yupeng Wu,Zexian Xu,Yaoxiang Xu,Xiaohan Gao,Yaru Diao,Yanshan Liu,Liqiang Chen,Jian Sun

Magnesium ions (Mg 2+ ) play an essential role in the metabolism and regeneration of bone tissue. Appropriate amounts of Mg 2+ have been shown to promote osteogenic differentiation of bone-derived cells and angiogenesis of endothelial cells. However, the initial burst release of Mg 2+ may compromise the osteogenic effect, so the controlled release of Mg 2+ is the critical consideration of the magnesium-containing tissue-engineered bone materials. This study proposes a microsphere-hydrogel complex to enhance the sustained-release effect and prolong the release cycle of Mg 2+ . For the initial release of Mg 2+ , polylactic acid (PLA) microspheres containing MgO and MgCO 3 were fabricated with uniform morphology. Further microspheres were incorporated into the chitosan-based hydrogel to form microsphere- hydrogel complex for extended release. The complex demonstrated effective sustained release of Mg 2+ over a period exceeding 28 days. In vitro cell experiments, CS/PLA@MgO-MgCO 3 significantly enhanced migration and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1. Meanwhile, it can facilitate the generation of blood vessels in HUVECs. In conclusion, the magnesium-loaded microsphere-hydrogel complex achieves excellent dual sustained-release properties with an extended-release cycle while enhancing vascularized osteogenic activity in vitro , showing promising prospects for clinical application in bone defect treatment.

Fire-safe and high-toughness PLA composites through Dual-Strategy: Ultralow-Loading PAPP@CoNi-LDH and uniaxial pre-stretching

Tianyi Ma,Lijing Han,Gaofei Zheng,Mingyu Wang,Junjia Bian,Yan Zhao,Hongwei Pan,Huiliang Zhang

In this work, we reported the first synthesis of an organic-inorganic hybrid flame retardant (PAPP@CoNi-LDH). This was achieved through the electrostatic self-assembly of piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP) and cobalt–nickel layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH). Compared to PLA/5 wt% PAPP, the PLA/4.5 wt% PAPP/0.5 wt% PAPP@CoNi-LDH composite (FRPLA-0.5) achieved a superior Underwriters Laboratories Vertical Burning Test rating (UL-94, from V-2 to V-0) and higher Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI, from 22.5 % to 28.0 %), demonstrating the exceptional flame-retardant efficiency of PAPP@CoNi-LDH at minimal loading. Furthermore, the superior char-catalyzing capability reduced the peak heat release rate of FRPLA-0.5 from 556 to 490 kW/m 2 versus pure PLA. Moreover, uniaxial pre-stretching was applied to fabricate flame-retardant PLA composites with superior mechanical properties. For FRPLA-0.5 subjected to 2.0 × pre-stretching (pre-stretching ratio = 2.0), tensile strength surged from 54.7 MPa to 96.6 MPa, elongation at break increased from 6.1 % to 63.7 %, and impact strength rose remarkably from 0.7 kJ/m 2 to 87.2 kJ/m 2 . This dual-strategy design achieved high-performance PLA composites with simultaneously enhanced fire safety and mechanical robustness.

Electrochemical monitoring the effect of drug intervention on PC12 cell damage model cultured on paper-PLA 3D printed device

Meng-Meng Liu,Yu Zhong,Yao Chen,Li-Na Wu,Wei Chen,Xin-Hua Lin,Yun Lei,Ai-Lin Liu

Three-dimensional (3D) cell culture system, as an alternative approach for traditional cell culture, attracts great attention because of physiological relevance and great microenvironment similarity to human conditions. Herein, a facile paper-polylactic (PLA) platform that was fabricated by wax printing and 3D printing , coupled with electrochemical sensor , was designed for the construction and intervention of 3D cell damage model. Pheochromocytoma cells (PC12) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were seeded on the paper-PLA 3D platforms and displayed the features of uniform distribution, good adhesion and perfect proliferation, as well as decreased circularity when compared to those grown on the two-dimensional (2D) interfaces. The electrochemical sensors revealed cell viability by monitoring dopamine released by cell models, ascertaining the applicability of the paper-PLA platform to a long-term 3D cell culture and drug assessment. Additionally, the results revealed that donepezil and BMSCs-secreted active molecules exhibited stronger cytoprotective effect against amyloid-beta oligomers-induced cell damage on the paper-PLA 3D printed platforms, indicating the cell damage model and the cell intervention model were achieved successfully in the simulated in vivo physiological microenvironment. Thus, the proposed paper-PLA platform may serve as a promising candidate for efficient drug screening and toxicity evaluation due to its simple structure, low cost, and convenient integration of 3D cell culture and activity evaluation.

3D-Printed Thermally Activated Shape Memory PLA/TBC Composite Scaffold with Body-Compatible Temperature for Minimally Invasive Bone Repair

Yanjian Huang,Yufeng Mao,Hongfa Li,Enyu Wang,Huaming Mai,Wenjie Zhang,Jieming Wen,Hui You,Yu Long,Wang Guo,Bin Liu,Shan Wang

Shape memory polymers (SMPs) can transform between initial and programmed shapes under certain stimuli and have promising potential in developing shape-adaptative bone scaffolds to treat irregular bone defects in minimally invasive implantation. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a degradable, biocompatible polymer that has thermal-responsive shape memory properties; however, its high transition temperature (approximately 50–60 °C) limits clinical applicability. This study proposes to develop a shape memory PLA based composite bone scaffold that can be gently thermally driven under a moderate temperature near the body by adding tributyl citrate (TBC) and fabricated via FDM 3D printing. The 3D-printed PLA/TBC composite scaffolds showed ordered porous structures with an orthogonal periodic interconnection. The mechanical test showed that TBC significantly increased the toughness of the scaffolds while it decreased its strength and modulus. The thermal physical property test showed that the glass transition temperature was successfully reduced from 54.9 °C (pure PLA) to 40.2 °C (10% TBC), approaching body temperature through TBC’s plasticization mechanism where low-MW ester molecules increased PLA chain mobility, thereby enhancing their flexibility. The shape memory test showed the shape fixation rate of the PLA/TBC scaffold achieved 97.2% with 10% TBC, and it can transform from programmed shape to initial shape in 30 s with a shape recovery rate of 92.8% under a gentle thermal stimulation at 45 °C. Then, proof of concept of this scaffold for minimally invasive implantation of the irregular bone defect model was presented. Besides, other tests showed that the hydrophilicity and degradation performance of the scaffolds were improved with TBC. Meanwhile, TBC also promoted the biomineralization and cellular response of the scaffold. This study provides an insight for developing shape- and temperature-adaptive bone scaffolds for minimally invasive repair of irregular bone defects.
