BACKGROUND Rice sheath blight, caused by Rhizoctonia solani ( R. solani) poses a significant threat to global rice production. Although prochloraz (PRO) is an effective fungicide, its poor photostability and low water solubility severely limit its field performance. We developed a sustainable, stimuli-responsive delivery system to enhance PRO efficacy and minimize environmental risks. RESULTS Multilayered mesoporous nanoparticles (MSN@PMO) were synthesized via a hard-template route and converted into hollow periodic mesoporous organosilicas (H-PMO) by sodium carbonate etching. PRO was encapsulated in H-PMO and sealed with pectin, yielding a dual pH/pectinase responsive formulation (Pec@PRO-H-PMO, PPHP). PPHP exhibited sustained release for 144 h under acidic and enzymatic conditions, and showed markedly improved photostability, foliar adhesion and rainfastness compared with PRO technical concentrate (PRO TC) and PRO water emulsion (PRO EW). Bioassays demonstrated that PPHP exhibited 1.8 times greater antifungal activity against R. solani compared to PRO TC. Ecotoxicological analysis revealed 11.9 times higher zebrafish median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) values than PRO TC over 80% viability of human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells at 18.4 mg/L, suggesting improved biosafety. CONCLUSIONS The dual pH/pectinase triggered release of PPHP enhanced pesticide utilization and improved safety. This strategy presents a novel approach for developing stimuli-responsive pesticide delivery systems, aiming to strengthen crop disease control efficiency and mitigate environmental risks. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Rice blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae , poses a formidable threat to global rice production. Given that chemical fungicides, one of the important methods used to control rice blast, cause harm to the environment and human health, sustainable alternatives are required. This study aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with antifungal activities against P. oryzae using mangrove soil bacteria, and to evaluate their ecotoxicity. RESULTS In this study, AgNPs were synthesized using fermentation extracts from Pseudomonas aeruginosa R64. The resulting nanoparticles (RFE-AgNPs), ranging in size from 4.516 to 37.031 nm, were characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy. RFE-AgNPs at 20 μg mL −1 had strong antifungal activity against P. oryzae , inhibiting colony growth by 77%. Moreover, RFE-AgNPs significantly hindered conidial germination, germ tube elongation and appressorium formation. In addition, microscopic observation revealed that RFE-AgNPs treatment disrupted mycelial morphology, lipid and glycogen metabolism and the cAMP signaling pathway of P. oryzae , limiting its infection and expansion in host tissues. A pathogenicity test confirmed that RFE-AgNPs significantly reduced disease development in barley and rice leaves. Importantly, RFE-AgNPs displayed significantly lower toxicity to Artemia salina compared with isoprothiolane and commercial AgNPs. CONCLUSION RFE-AgNPs synthesized using mangrove soil bacterial natural products displayed good control efficacy on rice blast but low ecotoxicity on A. salina and had great potential to be a promising candidate for eco-friendly biopesticides to manage rice blast disease. © 2025 The Author(s). Background Phytopathogenic fungi can cause a direct loss in economic value of agriculture. Especially Valsa mali Miyabe et Yamada, a devastating phytopathogenic disease especially threatening global apple production, is very difficult to control and manage. To discover new potential antifungal agents, a series of thiosemicarbazone derivatives of 3-acetyl- N -benzylindoles were prepared. Their antifungal activities were first tested against six typically phytopathogenic fungi including Curvularia lunata , Valsa mali , Alternaria alternate , Fusarium graminearum , Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium solani . Then their mechanism of action against V. mali was investigated. Results Derivatives displayed potent antifungal activity against V. mali . Notably, 3-acetyl- N -benzylindole thiosemicarbazone (IV-1: EC 50 : 0.59 μ g mL −1 ), whose activity was comparable to that of a commercial fungicide carbendazim (EC 50 : 0.33 μ g mL −1 ), showed greater than 98-fold antifungal activity of the precursor indole. Moreover, compound IV-1 displayed good protective and therapeutic effects on apple Valsa canker disease. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) and RNA-Seq analysis, it was demonstrated that compound IV-1 can destroy the hyphal structure and regulate the homeostasis of metabolism of V. mali via the ergosterol biosynthesis and autophagy pathways. Conclusion 3-Acetyl- N -(un)substituted benzylindoles thiosemicarbazones (IV-1–IV-5) can be studied as leads for further structural modification as antifungal agents against V. mali . Particularly, these ergosterol biosynthesis and autophagy pathways can be used as target receptors for design of novel green pesticides for management of congeneric phytopathogenic fungi. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Additives are essential components to maintain the stability of pesticide formulations, ensuring effectiveness and safety in field application. Nevertheless, numerous additives in pesticide formulations are a severe threat to the ecological environment. RESULTS Herein, an amphiphilic polymer C 18 -modified poly (acrylic acid) (P(AA/C 18 )) with biocompatibility was synthesized by modification of poly (acrylic acid) in the presence of octadecylamine to elaborate pyraclostrobin (PYR) emulsion. The effects of the preparation process and loading content on the stability of emulsion using P(AA/C 18 ) were systematically investigated compared with five commercial surfactants. The results showed that 20% PYR could be stably loaded by only 1% P(AA/C 18 ), which provided a feasible method for industrial development while mitigating the effects on the environment. The possible mechanism of stability was verified by a series of means, such as cryogenic scanning electron microscopy, and inspired by Stokes law and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory that electrical double layer and interfacial film with toughness and strength at the oil–water interface could form by the unique chemical structure of P(AA/C 18 ), preventing Ostwald ripening and coalescence. More interesting, the stability of the emulsion could be regulated regarding tunable rheological properties driven with concentrations including P(AA/C 18 ) and PYR in formulation. Moreover, the enhancement of photodegradation stability and an increase in zebrafish safety were proved. CONCLUSION This simple technology is effective to develop pesticide formulations satisfying high stability while mitigating adverse effects on environment, and P(AA/C 18 ) would be a promising polymeric carrier for the highly efficient delivery of pesticides. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND The red-haired bark beetle (RHB), Hylurgus ligniperda (Fabricius), is a significant invasive pest responsible for widespread mortality in pine forests. Current control methods are largely ineffective and poorly integrated, failing to halt the spread of RHB. This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated management system that leverages the beetle's behavioral patterns and implements stratified management strategies based on the severity of infestation levels. RESULTS We first enhanced trapping efficiency by optimizing key technologies, including trap design, deployment methods, and lure formulations. Building on this foundation, we developed a stratified management plan with the following key measures: in newly colonized stands, a strategy combining benzyl alcohol repellents and optimized lure attractants, along with flight-interception traps, significantly reduced spread, decreasing the proportion of dead trees from 12.5% to 2.6%. In outbreak stands, intensive measures such as stump removal and mass trapping reduced the RHB population density by 99.05%. Additionally, replanting alters stand volatiles, reducing their attractiveness to the beetles. CONCLUSION The stratified management strategy, applied to both newly colonized and outbreak stands of RHB, proved highly effective in suppressing population growth and preventing further dispersal. This approach offers a key technical solution for restoring damaged coastal ecosystems and provides a valuable reference for managing similar invasive pests worldwide. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Root-knot nematodes ( Meloidogyne incognita ) pose a persistent threat to global agriculture. The widespread use of chemical nematicides for their controlling has raised environmental safety and human health concerns, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Asarum sieboldii , a medicinal plant with documented bioactive properties, is a potential source of eco-friendly biocontrol agents. In this study, the nematicidal efficacy of A. sieboldii root volatile organic compounds (VOCs) against M. incognita was evaluated, and the mechanisms underlying the reduction in the number of root galls and egg masses by VOCs was elucidated. RESULTS VOCs from A. siebedii roots exhibited significant nematicidal activity, causing 76.31% and 96.89% mortality of second-stage M. incognita juveniles after 24 and 48 h, respectively, and effectively inhibited egg hatching by 72.94%. Activated carbon adsorption experiments confirmed VOCs as the primary bioactive agents. VOCs reduced the number of root galls and egg masses in tomato. We identified and screened three effective VOCs, namely 3,5-dimethoxytoluene, 4-methoxyacetophenone and β-pinene, that exhibited direct-contact and fumigant activity, and outperformed the commercial nematicide dazomet, reducing root galls on tomato by 65.5%, 55.3% and 44.4%, respectively, while enhancing the growth. These compounds triggered the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in nematodes, leading to oxidative stress and concurrent inhibition of peroxidase and catalase activities. CONCLUSIONS Three compounds from A. sieboldii exhibited fumigant activity against M. incognita and promoted tomato growth, highlighting their dual advantage over traditional chemical nematicides. These findings should contribute to the development of plant-based, environmentally-friendly strategies for integrated pest management. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND FtsZ, namely filamenting temperature-sensitive mutant protein Z, is pervasive and highly conserved in the division process of prokaryotic organisms, and thus recently has come to be regarded as a key target for the development of innovative antibacterial agents. However, although its application in pesticides remains limited, initiation of a FtsZ-targeted antibacterial discovery strategy could help to prevent bacterial infection and drug/pesticide resistance. RESULTS To discover a new FtsZ inhibitor, the attractive molecular hybridization strategy of introducing isopropanolamine linker was used in which representative active scaffolds for FtsZ inhibitors including coumarin and cinnamic acids were selected to devise new coumarin–cinnamic acid hybrids. Interestingly, compound 4d exhibited excellent in vitro antibacterial activity toward Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae [ Xoo , median effective concentration (EC 50 ) = 1.45 mg L −1 ], which was better than that of the reference reagent bismerthiazol (EC 50 = 33.08 mg L −1 ), and demonstrated commendable in vivo anti- Xoo activity (protective activity: 50.46% for 200 mg L −1 ). Furthermore, mechanistic assays including fluorescence imaging, guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) activity assay, fluorometric titration assays, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and computational simulations co-elucidated that compound 4d may selectively act on the guanosine 5′-triphosphate (GTP) binding site, further suppress the GTPase activity [median inhibitory concentration(IC 50 )value of compound 4d of 170.55 μ m ), thereby inhibiting bacterial reproduction. Toxicity studies accentuated the favorable pharmacological profile and low plant toxicity of compound 4d . CONCLUSION This study provides a new paradigm for extending new bactericides to efficiently control bacterial infections by targeting FtsZ. The work provides new insights for addressing bacterial drug resistance and overcoming bottlenecks in the development of novel pesticides. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) possess broad-spectrum biological activities with less inclination to inducing antibiotic resistance. Herein a battery of amphiphilic amidines were designed by mimicking the characteristics of AMPs. The antifungal activities and the effects to the hyphal morphology and membrane permeability were investigated. RESULTS The results indicated the inhibitory rates of ten compounds were over 80% to Botrytis cinerea and ten compounds over 90% to Valsa mali Miyabe et Yamada at 50 mg L −1 . The half maximal effective concentration (EC 50 ) values of compound 5g and 6g to V . mali were 1.21 and 1.90 mg L −1 respectively. The protective rate against apple canker of compound 5g reached 93.4% at 100 mg L −1 on twigs, superior to carbendazim (53.3%). When treated with 5g , the cell membrane permeability and leakage of content of V. mali increased, accompanied with the decrease of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) level. Concurrently, the mycelial hyphae contracted, wrinkled, and collapsed, providing evidence of membrane perturbation. A three-dimensional quantitative structure–activity relationship (3D-QSAR) between the topic compounds and the EC 50 to V . mali was established showing good predictability ( r 2 = 0.971). CONCLUSION Amphiphilic amidines can acquire antifungal activities by acting on the plasmic membrane. Compound 5g could be a promising lead in discovering novel fungicidal candidates. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Potato virus Y (PVY) is a prominent representative of plant viruses. It can inflict severe damage upon Solanaceae plants, leading to global dissemination and substantial economic losses. To discover new antiviral agents, a class of planar chiral thiourea molecules through the key step of N -heterocyclic carbene-catalyzed nitrile formation reaction was synthesized with excellent optical purities for antiviral evaluations against plant virus PVY. RESULTS The absolute configurations of the planar chiral compounds exhibited obvious distinctions in the anti-PVY activities. Notability, compound ( S )- 4u exhibited remarkable curative activities against PVY, with a half maximal effective concentration (EC 50 ) of 349.3 μg mL −1 , which was lower than that of the ningnanmycin (NNM) (EC 50 = 400.8 μg mL −1 ). Additionally, The EC 50 value for the protective effects of ( S )- 4u was 146.2 μg mL −1 , which was superior to that of NNM (276.4 μg mL −1 ). Furthermore, the mechanism-of-action of enantiomers of planar chiral compound 4u was investigated through molecular docking, defensive enzyme activity tests and chlorophyll content tests. CONCLUSION Biological mechanism studies have demonstrated that the configuration of planar chiral target compounds plays a crucial role in the molecular interaction with PVY-CP, enhancing the activity of defense enzymes and affecting chlorophyll content. The current study has provided significant insights into the roles played by planar chiralities in plant protection against viruses. This paves the way for the development of novel green pesticides bearing planar chiralities with excellent optical purities. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an important natural enemy of aphids. Plant species and plant health conditions can affect the behavior of H. axyridis . To determine plant effects on this lady beetle, we examined beetle responses to four cover crops: coriander ( Coriadrum sativum L., Apiales: Apiaceae), marigold ( Tagetes erecta L., Asterales: Asteraceae), sweet alyssum ( Lobularia maritima L., Brassicales: Brassicaceae), and alfalfa ( Medicago sativa L . , Fabales: Fabaceae). Our goal was to better understand this predator's ovipositional behavior in response to different plants and its olfactory response to the aphid-induced volatiles from these plants. RESULTS We found that this lady beetle did not have any significant oviposition preference among the four plant species, but H. axyridis preferred to lay eggs on the lower surface of leaves, regardless of the plant species. H. axyridis females had a significant preference for aphid-infested marigolds, but were not attracted by any of the other three cover plants or marigolds without aphid damage. Compared to the uninfested marigold plants, the emission of 12 compounds significantly increased on the aphid-infested marigolds, and two of them were attractive to H. axyridis under suitable concentrations. CONCLUSION H. axyridis did not show any significant oviposition preference among the four cover crops. Aphid-infested marigolds can attract H. axyridis . Indole and terpinen-4-ol mediated lady beetle attraction. These synomones have potential for manipulating populations of H. axyridis as a component of conservation biological control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND Anthranilic diamide derivatives are among the most important classes of synthetic insecticides. Moreover, the 1,2,4-oxadiazole heterocycle, a bioisostere of amide, has been extensively used in pesticides. In order to discover novel molecules with high insecticidal activities, a series of anthranilic diamide analogues containing 1,2,4-oxadiazole rings were designed and synthesised. RESULTS A series of novel anthranilic diamide derivatives containing 1,2,4-oxadiazole were obtained, and confirmed by 1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution mass spectrometry. The structure of 3-bromo- N -(4-chloro-2-methyl-6-{3-[(methylsulphonyl)methyl]-1,2,4-oxadiazol-5-yl}phenyl)-1-(3-chloropyridin-2-yl)-1 H -pyrazole-5-carboxamide was further characterised by X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, bioassays showed that most of the newly synthesised compounds displayed 100% mortality against Plutella xylostella at 100 mg L −1 , and compound 3IIl showed 90% larvicidal activities at a concentration of 0.5 mg L −1 . The LC 50 value of 3IIl was 0.20 mg L −1 , which indicated that it may be used as a potential leading compound for further structural optimisation. Furthermore, brief comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) models were established to study the structure–activity relationships (SARs) of the title compounds. CONCLUSION Compound 3IIl may be used as a potential leading compound for further structural optimisation, and SARs and CoMFA models could provide reliable clues for further structural optimisation. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

BACKGROUND Plant diseases infected by pathogenic fungi have a devastating effect on global agricultural and food industry yields. The development of novel, environmentally friendly, and efficient fungicides is an important technique for preventing and combatting phytopathogenic fungi. RESULTS Herein, 99 thiochroman-based derivatives containing hydroxyl, sulfoxide, sulfone, carbonyl, double bond, amino, imine, oxime, oxime ester, and amide moieties were synthesized. The antifungal activities of the target compounds against ten typical phytopathogenic fungi were also investigated. The bioassay results illustrated that most of the target compounds exhibited moderate to excellent antifungal effects against the tested fungi in vitro . Among these, thiochroman-oxime derivatives (12a–12m) exerted a promising inhibition effect, especially against Fusarium solani , Fusarium graminearum , Valsa mali , and Botrytis cinerea strains. Furthermore, the compounds 12f and 12g markedly suppressed the spore germination germ and tube growth. At the same time, they exerted excellent protective effects against potatoes infected by F. solani , making them superior to commercial fungicides Hymexazol and Chlorothalonil. Notably, the compounds 12d and 12f also showed excellent protective effects against cherry tomatoes infected by B. cinerea. Further mechanistic studies revealed that compound 12f exerted an antifungal effect by overtly altering the mycelium structure and remarkably increasing cell membrane permeability. Fortunately, the excellent bioactive compounds showed good safety against human hepatic cell lines (WRL-68). The preliminary structure–activity relationship analysis revealed that the introduction of hydroxyl or oxime fragments at the thiopyran ring might be significantly beneficial to antifungal activity. CONCLUSION This study provides thiochroman compounds that can be used in the development of novel botanical fungicides for the management of phytopathogenic fungi. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.
