Chemical vapor deposition derived ultralong SiC nanofibers: structural characterization and growth mechanism

Debao Liu,Chao Zhang,Yahui Xue

In this study, the ultralong SiC nanofibers (SiC NFs) were synthesized through the sol–gel method assisted the chemical vapor deposition technique. The scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques were systematically employed to investigate the microstructure, morphology, and phase composition of the as-prepared products. The results demonstrated that the as-obtained products were β-SiC nanofibers with face-centered cubic crystal structure. Meanwhile, the ultralong SiC NFs present an average diameter of about 18 nm and a length up to several hundreds of micrometers and grew along the [1 1 1] direction with a planar stacking faults. In addition, we also investigated the formation mechanism and growth process of the ultralong SiC NFs. The successful preparation of such ultralong SiC NFs provides new idea for fabricating of other silicon-based ultralong nanofibers.

Pure-SiC ceramic membrane for ultrafiltration: Morphology, pore characteristics and separation performances

Juan Wang,Shiquan Sui,Qianlong Fu,Yongzhao Yang,Jinxiu Fu,Fantao Meng,Shuang Li

Silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic membranes have gained increasing attention due to their excellent chemical and thermal stability serving in harsh conditions. However, the use of SiC ceramic membrane is limited in micro-filtration fields because of the micro-scale pores in the selective layer. Here, a pure-SiC ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared by dip-coating and recrystallization sintering using fine SiC particles of 100 nm and 50 nm in sizes. EDS and XRD analysis confirmed that the membrane was composed of pure-SiC phase, which endowed the UF membrane with strongly chemical resistance. Because of the refinement in particles, the average pore sizes of the ceramic membrane made of 100 nm and 50 nm particles corresponded to 82 nm and 58 nm, respectively. Due to the refinement in pore size, the oil flux increased from 69.50 L/(m 2 ·h) to 99.01 L/(m 2 ·h) and the oil rejection exceeded 98.8 % for the 50 nm membrane.

Y/YbB4-modified SiCf/SiC composites with enhanced water-oxygen corrosion resistance

Jing Wang,Fan Zhang,Yongsheng Liu,Jingxin Li,Ning Dong,Yejie Cao

Silicon carbide fibers-reinforced silicon carbide matrix (SiC f /SiC) composites, which are commonly used as thermal structural materials in different components, e.g., combustion chamber liners, are susceptible to water-oxygen corrosion, resulting in rapid performance degradation and structural collapse. To enhance their resistance to water-oxygen corrosion, the incorporation of rare-earth silicates (RE silicates) has been explored. In this study, novel Y/YbB 4 -modified SiC f /SiC composites, with superior resistance to water-oxygen corrosion, are fabricated using a combination of slurry infiltration (SI) and reactive melt infiltration (RMI) process. Results demonstrate that Y/YbB 4 -modified SiC f /SiC composites exhibit open porosity of 3.2 ± 0.4%, corresponding to remarkable reduction of 69.8% compared to CVI-SiC f /SiC composites. Furthermore, after being exposed to water-oxygen environment at 1200 °C for 100 h, the surface of Y/YbB 4 -modified SiC f /SiC composites displays various yttrium silicates and ytterbium silicates. The material exhibits strength retention of 76.84%, indicating a notable improvement of 15.71% over the CVI-SiC f /SiC composites.

Curing performance and print accuracy of oxidized SiC ceramic via vat photopolymerization

Wencai Dong,Chonggao Bao,Hao Li,Rongzhen Liu,Shijia Li,Haiqiang Ma

To improve the print quality of SiC ceramic, an amorphous SiO 2 layer is prepared on the surface of SiC by oxidation (SiC@SiO 2 ). The changes in curing depth and width direction of SiC@SiO 2 curing sheets with different degrees of oxidation were investigated. The results showed that curing depth increased while curing width decreased with an increasing degree of oxidation. The edge morphologies of SiC@SiO 2 curing sheets changed from serration to flat shape with increasing degree of oxidation, and uneven overcuring regions appear in the width direction. Additionally, 12% SiC@SiO 2 ceramic was fabricated via vat photopolymerization combined with reaction sintering . The dimensional deviation ratio of printed green bodies increased with decreasing printed line width and pore diameter. The minimum printed line width of 329 μm and pore diameter of 483 μm with good print quality were obtained. Furthermore, the flexural strength of 225.4 MPa and bulk density of 2.77 g cm −3 for sintered 12% SiC@SiO 2 parts were obtained.

Preparation, mechanical and ablation properties of a C/C-TaB2-SiC composite

Zhenxiao Tang,Maozhong Yi,Zhe Zhou,Huang Wu,Yuanming Zhou,Ke Peng

A C/C-TaB 2 -SiC composite was successfully prepared by high-solid-loading slurry impregnation combined with polymer infiltration and pyrolysis. The composite had a density of 3.46 g/cm 3 and consisted of pyrolyzed carbon, carbon fibers, TaB 2 particles, and precursor-derived SiC with their mass fractions of 7.8 %, 13.0 %, 58.6 %, and 20.6 %, respectively. The C/C-TaB 2 -SiC composite possessed a flexural strength of 248.2 ± 16.8 MPa and a fracture toughness of 13.7 ± 1.6 MPa·m 1/2 , and demonstrated a non-brittle fracture behavior . After exposure to oxyacetylene flame with a heat flux of 4.18 MW/m 2 for 120 s, the ablation temperature of the sample surface reached a maximum of 2263 °C, and the mass and line ablation rates were 2.24 mg/s and 12.92 µm/s, respectively. The ablation resistance mainly comes from the hindrance of oxygen diffusion by the oxide layer composed of tantalum oxide and a small amount of SiO 2 .

Stereolithographically 3D Printed SiC Metastructure for Ultrabroadband and High Temperature Microwave Absorption

Niping Zhou,Lu Zhang,Wenqing Wang,Xueqin Zhang,Keqiang Zhang,Mingji Chen,Yixing Huang,Rujie He,Daining Fang

Broadband microwave absorption is essential on the realms of electromagnetic compatibility and protection in civil application scenarios. However, coordination of material and structure is difficult without proper iterative design between material and structure resulting in insurmountable drawbacks of traditional microwave absorption medium operating under high temperature erosion. Herein, SiC metastructure is manufactured in bulk by stereolithographic 3D printing. The dielectric loss tangent of SiC sintered body is over 0.5 and up to 1.5 at most showing good electromagnetic energy dissipation properties. The optimized SiC metastructure with complicated suspended features achieves −10 dB broadband microwave absorption from 6.96 to 40 GHz at room temperature (RT) across total frequency range of 33.04 GHz. The proposed SiC metastructure is able to endure in situ 1000 °C and ex situ 1600 °C erosion in air atmosphere maintaining −10 dB effective bandwidth in 4.54–40 and 10.89–39.67 GHz, respectively. Broadband microwave absorption under oblique incidence from 0° to 60° is also achieved in a wide temperature range from RT to 1600 °C. The densification of SiC results in a high mechanical strength of 217.36 MPa for structural load bearing applications. The intrinsic electromagnetic variation of SiC under different temperature is relaxed and adapted to the metastructure design. The functions of broadband microwave absorption and high temperature protection are integrated into one metastructure.

Effect of low activation rare-earth oxides on sintering of β-SiC

Dengzhou Xu,Ce Zheng,Chong Wei,Shanshan Xu,Yichun Bi,Xiaoqiang Li

The feasibility of sintering β-SiC at 1850 ℃ with using low-activation rare-earth oxides as sintering additives was studied. Thermodynamic calculation suggested that all five rare-earth oxides (Y 2 O 3 , Sc 2 O 3 , CeO 2 , La 2 O 3 , and Pr 6 O 11 ) were suitable sintering additives. Comprehensive microstructure characterization further revealed that Pr 6 O 11 was the most effective sintering additive as it suffered the least influence from the content effect. A mechanism based on liquid phase sintering was proposed based on microstructure observations. The radiation stability of sintered SiC was investigated as well. The intergranular phases (rare-earth oxides and silicates) and SiC grains remained after being irradiated to 17 dpa at 750 ℃.

Ultralight and hyperelastic SiC nanofiber aerogel spring for personal thermal energy regulation

Song Limeng,Fan Bingbing,Chen Yongqiang,Gao Qiancheng,Li Zhe,Wang Hailong,Zhang Xinyue,Guan Li,Li Hongxia,Zhang Rui

Multifunctionalization is the development direction of personal thermal energy regulation equipment in the future. However, it is still a huge challenge to effectively integrate multiple functionalities into one material. In this study, a simple thermochemical process was used to prepare a multifunctional SiC nanofiber aerogel spring (SiC NFAS), which exhibited ultralow density (9 mg/cm 3 ), ultralow thermal conductivity (0.029 W/(m·K) at 20 °C), excellent ablation and oxidation resistance, and a stable three-dimensional (3D) structure that composed of a large number of interlacing 3C-SiC nanofibers with diameters of 300–500 nm and lengths in tens to hundreds of microns. Furthermore, the as-prepared SiC NFAS displayed excellent mechanical properties, with a permanent deformation of only 1.3% at 20 °C after 1000 cycles. Remarkably, the SiC NFAS exhibited robust hyperelasticity and cyclic fatigue resistance at both low (∼−196 °C) and high (∼700 °C) temperatures. Due to its exceptional thermal insulation performance, the SiC NFAS can be used for personal thermal energy regulation. The results of the study conclusively show that the SiC NFAS is a multifunctional material and has potential insulation applications in both low- and high-temperature environments.

Digital light processing of SiC ceramic from allylhydridopolycarbosilane with limited acrylate monomers

Jian Gong,Yuanjie Wang,Jing Huang,Xueliang Pei,Liu He,Zhengren Huang,Yujie Song,Qing Huang

Digital light processing of ceramic precursor was used to prepare SiC rich ceramic parts in this study. In order to achieve appropriate light curing rate, the ceramic precursor allylhydropolycarbosilane (LHBPCS) was mixed with acrylate monomers tripropylene glycol diacrylate and trimethylolpropane triacrylate. The content of acrylate monomers was optimized to increase the ceramic yield and reduce the shrinkage during pyrolysis. According to the results of thermogravimetric analysis and photolithography experiment, 15 wt% acrylate monomers was appropriate. 330 mJ/cm 2 UV irradiation dose was selected for every layer with a thickness of 25 μm, and green bodies with different shapes were successfully printed. During pyrolysis, these printed parts changed from transparent yellow to black accompanying uniform shrinkage. At 1000 °C, the shrinkage was 24.0–26.0%, and crack-free SiC rich ceramic parts with density of 2.11 g/cm 3 and chemical formula of SiC 1.31 O 0.26 were obtained.

Fabrication and microstructure evolution of monolithic bridged polysilsesquioxane-derived SiC ceramic aerogels

Chengxi Ding,Dongxiao Hu,Xinrui He,Yifan Lai,Gaofeng Shao

SiC aerogels are representative high-temperature ceramic aerogels that have demonstrated extensive potential utility in the thermal insulation field under extreme conditions. Although the efficient fabrication of monolithic and highly crystalline SiC aerogels is crucial, it remains highly challenging. Herein, a one-step pyrolysis strategy of a bridged polysilsesquioxane (BPSi) aerogel precursor is reported. The preceramic BP aerogel was prepared via a sol-gel method followed by vacuum drying, and the subsequent pyrolysis process conveniently converted the BPSi aerogel precursor into a SiC aerogel. This circumvents the need for harsh synthetic conditions, high-cost noble metal catalysts, special drying, and additional calcination processes. Furthermore, a competitive mechanism between the “gas-escape” caused by the volatilization of low molecular compounds and carbothermal reduction reaction, and the “volume-shrinkage” resulting from high-temperature sintering was proposed to explain the evolution of phase composition and pore hierarchy of BPSi-derived ceramic aerogels.

Effect of phase composition on the oxidation resistance of ZrB2-SiC coatings

Jianjie Hao,Jiayan Li,Binglin Zou,Xiaolong Cai,Wei Shi,Yi Tan

ZrB 2 -SiC-Al 2 O 3 (ZSA) and ZrB 2 -SiC-Si (ZSS) coatings were prepared on the surface of C/C composites by atmospheric plasma spraying . During oxidation at 1200 ℃ for 10 h, the formation of B 2 O 3 in the ZSA coating volatilizes gradually, no glass phase is able to seal cracks and holes, resulting in poor oxidation resistance . On the other hand, the ZSS coating produces a large amount of borosilicate glass phase and still gains 0.8% weight after 10 h. During oxidation at 1500 ℃, a low viscosity SiO 2 glass phase forms on the ZSA coating, due to the presence of Al 2 O 3 and this glassy phase has a good ability to seal defects. However, the rapid volatilization of B 2 O 3 in the ZSS coating leads to the formation of large holes in the coating, and to progressively increased viscosity of SiO 2 glass phase, resulting in decreased oxidation resistance.

Fabrication of SiC nanofiber aerogel felt with high-temperature thermal insulation performance

Jinxia Li,Zahoor Ahmad,Jianjun Chen,Hao Chen,Jiyu Tao

Flexible SiC nanowire aerogel felt has excellent foldability, high-temperature resistance, and thermal insulation properties. However, the large-scale and high-efficiency production of SiC nanofiber aerogel felt remains a challenge. In this work, a three-dimensional network-structured short-chopped carbon fiber felt was used as a template for preparing SiC nanowire aerogel felt. The short-chopped carbon fibers were combed and dispersed using an airflow in a carding machine to obtain the desired felt. This method enables rapid and uniform preparation of carbon fiber felt, enhancing the efficiency of SiC nanowire aerogel felt production. The experimental results showed that the aerogel felt was mainly composed of β-SiC nanowires with a density of 5.29 g/cm 3 . Additionally, the SiC nanofiber aerogel felt exhibited remarkable superelasticity and low thermal conductivity (0.013 W/m·K). This research contributes to the practical application of flexible SiC nanowire aerogel felt in the field of thermal insulation.
