In-situ synthesized Sn-doped In2O3 nanorods for low-temperature NO2 sensing with high response

Yuhang Du,Longyu Ren,Jiliang Yuan,Ruojin Zhang,Mengmeng Xie,Hongyan Xu

As a key air pollutant, the efficient detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) is of great significance for environmental monitoring. In this study, In 2 O 3 nanorods with different Sn doping concentrations (0–10 mol.%) were in-situ synthesized on Al 2 O 3 ceramic tubes via a one-step hydrothermal method combined with an annealing process. The structure, morphology, and NO 2 gas-sensing properties of the as-prepared materials were systematically investigated. Gas-sensing results demonstrate that 5 mol.% Sn-doped In 2 O 3 nanorods exhibit a high response (227.6) to 50 ppm NO 2 at 100 °C, which is 31 times that of pure In 2 O 3 (7.3). They also feature rapid response/recovery times (22 s/21 s), excellent selectivity, and long-term stability (response fluctuation <15 % over 30 days). Characterization results reveal that Sn 4 + is successfully incorporated into the In 2 O 3 lattice, leading to lattice contraction and an increase in oxygen vacancy content (oxygen vacancy ratio of 44.96 %). The gas-sensing mechanism, combining the adsorbed oxygen model with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, demonstrates that Sn doping enhances the adsorption energy and charge transfer between NO 2 and the sensing material.

Anion-Dipole Repulsions Improve Low-Temperature Performance of μ-Sn for Advanced Sodium-Ion Batteries

Hongyu Lv,Qian Yao,Cheng Zheng,Yanan Sun,Zhao Qian,Zhikai Wei,Fang Xie,Rajeev Ahuja,Jian Yang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are attractive for large-scale energy storage and have to work at a wide temperature range. Compared to the performance at room temperature, the low-temperature performance of SIBs is always poor. Herein, tetrahydrofuran (THF) and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (MTHF) are mixed as a model of weak solvating effect to improve the low-temperature performance. In the mixed electrolyte, the anion-dipole expulsion and steric hindrance in the solvation sheath increase, which weakens the cation-dipole attraction and reduces the desolvation energy. Meanwhile, the weak dipole-dipole interaction between THF and MTHF lowers the electrolyte viscosity and improves the ionic conductivity. The change in the solvation structure also results in an entropy increase, facilitates the cleavage of P-F in PF 6 ‾ , and the formation of NaF-rich solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Using commercial Sn microparticles as a model, the mixed electrolyte enables them to deliver a capacity of 328 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at −40 °C, much better than the cases only using THF or MTHF alone. The electrolyte can be also successfully adapted to Bi and hard carbon, confirming its good compatibility with different anode materials. These results provide an in-depth understanding of low-temperature electrolytes for advanced sodium-ion batteries.

Additive Engineering for High-Performance Two-Dimensional Dion–Jacobson Pb–Sn Alloyed Perovskite Solar Cells

Hongxi Shi,Lei Zhang,Hao Huang,Yali Ou,Xiaoting Wang,Ziyu Li,Dan Chi,Shihua Huang

Two-dimensional perovskite materials attract great attentions for the application of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to the regulable bandgap and high stability. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2D PSCs is far behind in that of three-dimensional PSCs. Herein, Dion–Jacobson (DJ) phase Pb–Sn perovskite of (PhDMA)MA 4 (Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 ) 5 I 16 in 2D PSCs is introduced, which has suitable bandgap of 1.27 eV and offers the candidate for the absorber of bottom device in all perovskite tandem solar cells. The nonlinear bandgap behavior of 2D Pb–Sn perovskite materials is certified by adjusting the recipe of precursors to vary the bandgap of perovskite films. Moreover, MACl is employed to improve the film quality of 2D Pb–Sn perovskite, leading to the suppression of the defect density and nonradiative recombination for 2D PSCs. As a result, a high PCE of 12.2% is achieved for DJ phase 2D Pb–Sn PSCs.

Synergistically optimizing thermoelectric transport properties of n-type PbTe via Se and Sn co-alloying

Yu Xiao,Wei Li,Cheng Chang,Yuexing Chen,Li Huang,Jiaqing He,Li-Dong Zhao

We report n-type PbTe with a maximum ZT ∼1.2 at 673 K and an average ZT ave ∼0.84 at 300–823 K, which was achieved through a Sn and Se co-alloying approach. We find that the lattice thermal conductivity can be largely reduced through introducing Se in Te sites, and the power factor can be enhanced through introducing Sn in the Pb sites. Combining two strategies via Se and Sn co-alloying in PbTe, results show that the lattice thermal conductivity at 300 K can be reduced from ∼3.1 Wm −1 K −1 to ∼1.2 Wm −1 K −1 after alloying 15% Se, which is consistent with the Callaway model. Meanwhile, we find that both carrier concentration and mobility can be enhanced through alloying small amount of Sn, which are supported by DFT calculation with emphasis on the defect formation energies . The improvement on electrical conductivity elucidates an enhanced power factor at 300 K increasing from ∼6.4 μWcm −1 K −2 to ∼14.6 μWcm −1 K −2 . Through synergistically optimizing electrical and thermal transport properties of n-type PbTe via Sn and Se co-alloying, the ZT value is distinctly enhanced to 1.2 at 673 K, and the average ZT ave value is improved by ∼35%, from ∼0.62 in PbTe 0.997 I 0.003 to ∼0.84 in Pb 0.995 Sn 0.005 Te 0.847 Se 0.15 I 0.003 , ensuring a high maximum thermoelectric conversion efficiency ∼10.7%.

Enhanced energy storage performance in Sn doped Sr0.6(Na0.5Bi0.5)0.4TiO3 lead-free relaxor ferroelectric ceramics

Leiyang Zhang,Ziyang Wang,Yang Li,Peng Chen,Jing Cai,Yan Yan,Yifan Zhou,Dawei Wang,Gang Liu

SnO 2 doped Sr 0.6 (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.4 TiO 3 (NBT-ST) ceramics were prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction method. Their phase structures, microstructures and electrical properties were characterized in details. It is found that SnO 2 doping could increase the lattice parameters , density and average grain size. A suitable amount of SnO 2 can improve dielectric properties , and affect the relaxor behavior of the NBT-ST matrix, thereby it can effectively reduce the energy loss and optimize the energy storage performance. Furthermore, the energy storage properties are improved with SnO 2 doping. Especially, the 1 at. % SnO 2 doped NBT-ST achieves a high recoverable energy density of 2.35 J/cm 3 , which is mainly attributed to large maximum polarization of 43.2 μC/cm 2 , small remnant polarization of 5.83 μC/cm 2 and high breakdown strength of 180 kV/cm. Also, relatively good temperature stability for dielectric performance and excellent fatigue resistance are observed in this composition. These properties are attractive for lead-free energy storage applications.

Managing Grain Boundary Energy by Dipole Strategy in Sn-Pb Perovskite for All-Perovskite Tandems

Jiaxing Xiong,Tianshu Ma,Luolei Shi,Jing Zhang,Yuhong Xu,Qiuxiang Wang,Wendong Zhu,Rong Xuan,Zhenhai Yang,Changlei Wang,Xiaofeng Li,Like Huang,Xiaohui Liu,Yuejin Zhu,Dewei Zhao

All-perovskite tandem solar cells (TSCs) offer a path to exceed the Shockley–Queisser limit of single-junction devices, yet their development is hindered by the inferior efficiency and stability of low-bandgap tin-lead (Sn-Pb) perovskite bottom cells. The inherent grain boundaries (GBs) in Sn-Pb perovskites feature detrimental p -type energy states and unfavorable upward energy band bending that promote non-radiative charge recombination and pathways for ion migration-induced degradation. Herein, we employ dipole management at GBs of Sn-Pb perovskite by 4-(trifluoromethyl)benzohydrazide (FBH), which effectively modulates the GB energy landscape throughout the film. The dipole effect reverses the top surface GB energy states to create downward bending of the energy band, promoting efficient charge separation at GBs. Concurrently, FBH treatment enhances perovskite film quality through grain growth regulation, defect passivation, and immobilization of FA + /I − ions. Consequently, the optimized Sn-Pb perovskite solar cell achieves a high efficiency of 23.25% with outstanding operation stability, i.e., keeping over 80% of its initial efficiency under 85°C thermal stress after 400 h and 90% of its original efficiency upon 1872 h in glove box. All-perovskite TSC obtains 29.67% efficiency and retains 90% of its initial efficiency after approximately 1000 h maximum power point tracking.

PtIn nanoalloy supported on Sn-MFI for efficient selective oxidation of glycerol to lactic acid

Haodong Xie,Yumeng Fo,Hongwei Zhang,Hua Xu,Xiao Zhang,Yingshuo Guo,Runze Li,Ruolin Zhang,Guilin Liu,Xicheng Jia,Jiazhou Li,Yuming Zhang,Meizan Jing,Weiyu Song,Wenhao Luo,Zhijie Wu

Developing efficient Pt-based catalysts is crucial for sustainable lactic acid (LA) production via glycerol oxidation. Herein, we synthesized a series of robust PtIn/Sn-MFI catalysts with low Pt loading of 0.5 wt% for glycerol oxidation under base-free conditions. The PtIn/Sn-MFI catalysts with varying In contents exhibited a volcano-shaped trend between turnover frequency (TOF) and In/Pt molar ratio. Among all tested catalysts, the Pt 0.5 In 1.0 /Sn-MFI sample exhibited the highest catalytic activity (1283 h –1 ), achieving 96.8% glycerol conversion with 73.5% LA selectivity, surpassing the monometallic Pt 0.5 /Sn-MFI catalyst. Furthermore, the Pt 0.5 In 1.0 /Sn-MFI catalyst maintained excellent stability, with no significant degradation in catalytic performance even after five consecutive recycling runs. Experimental analysis and characterizations verified the formation of PtIn 2 nanoalloys, accompanied by electron transfer from In to Pt, which significantly enhanced the catalysts’ O−H bond activation ability, resulting in high activity and selectivity. Combined with kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations, we further revealed that PtIn 2 nanoalloy active sites significantly reduce the activation energy barrier for the dehydrogenation of the secondary hydroxy group in the reaction pathway. This work offers new perspectives on the rational design of cost-effective, high-efficiency catalysts for the sustainable oxidation of glycerol to LA.

Mn mixed oxide catalysts supported on Sn-doped CoAl-LDO for low-temperature NH3-SCR

Hange Wang,Wen Chen,Wei Jin,Yueli Liu

SCR technology is considered to be the most effective method for denitrification. However, the low NOx conversion rate of the current catalysts at low temperatures limits their further application. Herein, Sn-doped modified CoAl-LDH carriers are synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and the typical hexagonal sheet structure of the MnOx(0.25)/CoSn3Al-LDO catalyst achieves 100% NO conversion at a wide range of 120–330 °C with a GHSV of 30 000 h−1, and the 100% NO conversion may be maintained at 200 °C for 30 h. After the introduction of 150 ppm SO2 at 200 °C, the NO conversion of the MnOx(0.25)/CoSn3Al-LDO catalyst is maintained at 73.4%, which is greatly improved compared with those of CoAl-LDO and MnOx(0.25)/CoAL-LDO catalysts (64.8% and 38.6%, respectively). The active components such as MnOx and Co3O4 are highly dispersed in the MnOx(0.25)/CoSn3Al-LDO catalyst. Sn doping increases the ratios of Mn4+/Mn3+ and Co3+/Co2+ as well as the adsorbed oxygen amount on the catalyst surface, and improves the redox capacity of the catalyst and increases the number of acid sites, resulting in the excellent low-temperature NH3-SCR performance of MnOx(0.25)/CoSn3Al-LDO.

In-modified Sn-MOFs with high catalytic performance in formate electrosynthesis from aqueous carbon dioxide

Jiaying Yan,Xuanyu Wang,Fanghua Ning,Jin Yi,Yuyu Liu,Kai Wu

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) has become an effective solution to relieve the energy crisis and tackle climate change. In this study, a series of tin-based organic frameworks modified by In (Sn-MOF/Inx) were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method and explored for high formate-selective CO2ER. The pure Sn-MOF exhibits maximum formate selectivity with a faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of approximately 85.0% and a current density of 15 mA cm−2 at −1.16 VRHE, while the In (6%)-modified Sn-MOF (Sn-MOF/In6) delivers a much higher maximum FEformate (around 97.5%) and a current density of 16 mA cm−2 at −0.96 VRHE. Remarkably, the Sn-MOF/In6 exhibits a significantly larger specific surface area (183.3 m2 g−1) compared to the Sn-MOF (65.2 m2 g−1). These findings indicate that introducing In, an alien element with a slightly different outer orbital electron number from that of Sn, can significantly boost the selectivity and activity for CO2ER to formate. This study presents an efficient way to modify MOF catalysts through a well-designed introducing process.

Effects of Acid Modulators on the Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Cr/Sn Metal-Organic Frameworks

Wei Mao,Renting Huang,Hao Xu,Hao Wang,Yi Huang,Shurong Huang,Jinghong Zhou

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted remarkable attention for their distinguished structural designability. Precisely controlling the particle size and improving the structural stability of MOF nanoparticles influence their catalytic activity significantly. In this study, six acids (nitric, hydrochloric, formic, acetic, succinic, and citric acids) were used as modulators to prepare bimetallic MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) (MIL stands for Materials of Institut Lavoisier) via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. Changes in volumetric, structural, stability, and catalytic properties, size, and shape of MIL-101 (Cr, Sn) were examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and N2adsorption–desorption measurements. All modulators altered the MOF properties. Compared with other samples, acetic acid as a modulator mildly altered the MOF morphology by narrowing their particle size distribution, enhancing the specific surface area, and significantly improving their water and thermal stabilities. The addition of acetic acid was suitable for the catalytic conversion of glucose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), achieving a 43.1% 5-HMF yield with 91.4% glucose conversion in a mixed solution of γ-valerolactone and saturated salt water at 150 °C after 30 min. Keywords:modulators;microwave synthesis;bimetallic MIL-101 (Cr, Sn)

Application of Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode for treating high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater

Zhen-xing Yang,Wen-yu Xie,Fang-fang Ye,De-hao Li

Electro-catalytic technology is a promising approach for wastewater treatment, owing to its easy operation, minimal generation of secondary pollution, small foot-print and rapid start-up. In this work, the chlorine evolution potential of the Pd-Sn modified ruthenium(Ru)-iridium(Ir) electrode was investigated for the electro-catalytic treatment of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater. The effect of reaction conditions on the removal of ammonia-nitrogen, kinetics and apparent activation energy of ammonia-nitrogen removal were studied. The possible denitrification process of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater was discussed. The results indicated that the chlorine evolution potential of the Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode was 1.0956 V(vs. SCE). The electro-catalytic treatment of high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen conformed to zero-order kinetic law, and the apparent activation energy of removal process was 14.089 kJ/mol. With a current was 0.5 A, the removal efficiency of ammonia-nitrogen could achieve 100% at a reaction time of 40 min. Indirect oxidation played an essential role in the electro-catalytic ammonia-nitrogen removal using the Pd-Sn modified Ru-Ir electrode. This paper demonstrated that the electro-catalytic technology was a promising approach for efficiently treating the high chlorine ammonia-nitrogen wastewater.

Production of γ-valerolactone from ethyl levulinate over hydrothermally synthesized Sn-Beta under mild conditions

Tianliang Lu,Xianfeng You,Yanlong Zong,Yongming Xu,Xiaomei Yang,Lipeng Zhou

Production of γ-valerolactone (GVL) from ethyl levulinate (EL) was studied by catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) strategy under mild conditions. Hydrothermally synthesized Sn-Beta zeolites with high crystallinity show high catalytic activity and selectivity. With isopropanol as hydrogen source, 97.1 % GVL yield with 100 % selectivity was given under 110 °C. Crystallization time for synthesis of Sn-Beta showed great effect on the catalytic performance. Sn-Beta- x d catalysts with longer crystallization time (≥7 days) have high crystallinity and better catalytic performance. Firstly, longer crystallization time is necessary for the formation of large amount of Lewis acid sites which catalyze the conversion of EL to GVL. Secondly, high level of silanol groups in Sn-Beta has negative effect on the catalytic performance. High crystallinity means the amount of silanol groups in Sn-Beta- x d at a low level which is favorable for this CTH reaction. Meanwhile, this is why hydrothermally synthesized Sn-Beta shows higher catalytic activity than post-synthesized Sn-Beta in the conversion of EL to GVL. Furthermore, the catalyst was reusable.
