Preparation and characterization of a novel sodium alginate incorporated self-assembled Fmoc-FF composite hydrogel

Xiao Gong,Christopher Branford-White,Lei Tao,Shubai Li,Jing Quan,Huali Nie,Limin Zhu

Dipeptides and their derivatives have attracted tremendous attention owning to their excellent abilities of self-assemble assembling into various structures which have great potentials for applications in biology and/or nanotechnology. In the present study, we dedicate to fabricate a rigid and structure controllable Fmoc-FF/SA composite hydrogel. We found that the modified dipeptide, fluorenyl-9-methoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-diphenylalanine (Phe-Phe) can self-assemble into rigid hydrogels with structures of nanowires, layered thin films or honeycombs as the change of sodium alginate (SA) concentration. Meanwhile, CD-spectroscopy demonstrated that SA appeared to control the process, but it did not change the arrangement of the Fmoc-FF peptide. Our results demonstrated that the formed hydrogel showed physical and chemical stability as well as possessing good biocompatibility. Rheological measurements showed that the addition of SA could improve the stability of the hydrogel. Cell viability assay revealed that the Fmoc-FF and Fmoc-FF/SA hydrogels are both beneficial for cell proliferation in-vitro . Our results indicated that the fabricated Fmoc-FF/SA composite hydrogels could be used in tissue engineering and drug delivery in the future.

Constructing a novel zwitterionic surface of PVDF membrane through the assembled chitosan and sodium alginate

Haiye Wang,Xinzhen Zhao,Chunju He

A novel zwitterionic surface of PVDF membrane with significantly improved antifouling properties was prepared though pressure-assisted layer by layer self-assembly method based on the electrostatic interactions of chitosan (CS), sodium alginate (SA) and polyfunctional lysine. For the modified C-S-C-S-L membrane, the contact angle decreased to 35°, the bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorption mass of static fouling on the membrane surface decreased to 10   μg/cm 2 , and the secondary water flux recovery rate (FRR) of dynamic fouling of BSA and humic acid (HA) pollutants increased to 98% and 99%, respectively, exhibiting excellent antifouling performance. The results demonstrated that using charged bio-macromolecules and amino acids to build zwitterionic surface was effective and convenient to change the interface properties of the separation membrane through the pressure-assisted self-assembly modification method, and provided a new way for the industrial scale hydrophilic modification of hydrophobic porous membrane materials.

Synthesis of superparamagnetic carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate nanosphere and its application for immobilizing α-amylase

Jianfang Jiang,Yongzheng Chen,Wei Wang,Baodong Cui,Nanwei Wan

In order to improve catalytic activity, increase recycling times, reduce use cost for enzyme, superparamagnetic carboxymethyl chitosan/sodium alginate nanosphere (SM/CMC/SA) has been synthesized via an improved hydrothermal method, molecular self-assembly technology, electrostatic interaction and amide linkage. Its mean diameter was 65   nm, zeta potential was −36.9   mV and BET was 53.8   m 2 /g. α-Amylase was selected as a simulation object to manufacture an immobilized enzyme (SM/CMC/CA/α-Amy), and its catalytic activity, release behavior, reusability and stability were researched. Immobilization increased 4.67 times to catalytic activity, slowed down release rate and improved reusable performance. SM/CMC/CA/α-Amy showed higher activity over a wider pH range, especially in strong acidic and alkaline environments. The thermal stability and storage stability were improved remarkably too. All these results indicated that SM/CMC/SA was an ideal carrier for immobilizing enzyme.

Synthesis of Magnetic Microspheres with Sodium Alginate and Activated Carbon for Removal of Methylene Blue

Chaodao Li,Jianjiang Lu,Shanman Li,Yanbin Tong,Bangce Ye

Based on the adsorption performance of composite microspheres with activated carbon (AC) and sodium alginate (SA), as well as the magnetic property of Fe3O4, we designed and explored an efficient strategy to prepare a unique, multifunctional Fe3O4/AC/SA composite absorbent (MSA-AC) that extracted dye from aqueous solution. The composite exhibited the following advantages: rapid and simple to prepare, environmentally friendly process, low-cost, recyclability, and multi-functionality. The physicochemical properties of the prepared magnetic microspheres were measured, and methylene blue (MB) was selected to investigate the performance of the magnetic absorbent. The results showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 222.3 mg/g for MB. Adsorption studies revealed that the data of adsorption isotherms and kinetics fit the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. Keywords:magnetic microsphere;methylene blue;adsorption properties

Effect of Sodium Alginate Modification on Low-Temperature Strain-Sensing Properties of Liquid Metal Hydrogel

Jie Wang,Jie Li,Wenfeng Luo,Qi Liu,Chen Wang,Bing Ren,Yang Cao,Jing Han,Yingchun Li

Developing conductive hydrogels with excellent low-temperature strain-sensing properties is still a challenge. In this study, sodium alginate (SA) is used as a modifier for liquid metal (LM) to construct a double network conductive hydrogel using physicochemical cross-linked quaternary ammonium salts of chitosan and core–shell LM@SA composite. The effect of sodium alginate modification on the low-temperature strain-sensing properties of liquid metal hydrogel was studied. The results show that it leads to good stretchability (stress: 1.13 MPa, strain: 382%) and strain sensing sensitivity (GF: 3.66) of composite hydrogel prepared by adding 0.3 wt % of SA. Interestingly, adding 0.3 wt % of SA is beneficial for the low-temperature (minimum temperature: −40 °C) strain-sensing enhancement of the hydrogels, which is attributed to the supercooling effect of LM by promoting the dispersion into droplets with small particle size and the reduction of the free water content by forming the hydrogen bonds between molecules. The composite hydrogel can be used as a flexible strain sensor with the ability to monitor human activities over a wide operating temperature range and as a flexible keyboard. Overall, the study presented here provides a approach for antifreezing hydrogels that can be used for wearable strain sensors.

Ca2+, Fe3+ co-crosslinked tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate gel membrane for organic solvent nanofiltration

Haike Li,Zhiyun Kong,Huan Zhang,Xiaolei Wang,Yaohua Xie,Xingqing Zhao,Yidan Hong

It is necessary to prepare a nanofiltration membrane with high permeation flux that can be used in the field of organic solvents. Gel membranes have a high solvent permeation flux, but their chained macromolecular structure is often unstable. In this study, tannic acid-bridged sodium alginate (TA x -Ca/FeSA) organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes were prepared by the phase transition method using aqueous Ca 2+ and Fe 3+ solutions as cross-linking agents. TA can interact with SA through hydrogen bonding hydrophobic bonding and other interactions to form an interpenetrating three-dimensional network structure. Compared with Ca/FeSA membrane, the average pore size of TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was reduced from 1.03 nm to 0.74 nm, and the porosity was increased from 47.62 to 59.2 %. In addition, the TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane has the characteristics of a negative charge, super hydrophilicity, and high mechanical properties, exhibits a high permeation flux of 48.97 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 with a rejection of 96.25 % for Congo red ethanol solution, has excellent solvent resistance, stain resistance, and self-cleaning ability. The TA 0.125 -Ca/FeSA membrane was demonstrated to have great potential for application in the fields of purification and solvent recovery.

Effect of graphene oxide on sodium alginate hydrogel as a carrier triggering release of ibuprofen

Xiuling Lin,Jiali Shi,Ge Meng,Yusong Pan,Zhenying Liu

The design and preparation of safe wound dressings with antibacterial and controlled drug release abilities is valuable in medicine. This research focuses on the fabrication of a hydrogel carrier with graphene oxide (GO)–triggered ibuprofen (IBU) release to control inflammation. The hydrogel was prepared by cross-linking the base polymer sodium alginate (SA) and functionalized GO. The morphology of the gel was observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and its structure was analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared reflection (FTIR) spectroscopy. The effects of GO on swelling capacity, IBU release behavior and antibacterial activity were investigated by using the prepared GO/SA hydrogel as a drug carrier and IBU as a drug model. In vitro studies confirmed that the GO/SA hydrogel had good antimicrobial activity and excellent cytotoxicity. The analysis of cumulative IBU release rates revealed that the addition of GO could promote the release of IBU, and the change in GO content did not have a prominent effect on IBU release. At the same time, the rate of IBU release from the GO/SA hydrogel was affected by near-infrared light. Under a light source, the release rate of IBU increased, and the release amount of IBU showed a clear stepwise increase under light on–off conditions. These results suggest that the GO/SA hydrogel could be a potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory wound dressing.

Facile preparation of functional decorated of phase change materials composites based on paraffin @ sodium alginate

Xiangyun Kong,Jinge Lu,Mengkun Xu,Mengyuan Song,Keqing Li,Wenshuai Qiu,Jiali Zhang,Xi Chen,Yongxin Liu

A novel and simple one-step method was proposed for the preparation of multifunctional microencapsulated phase change materials to satisfy the requirements of different application scenarios. Here, with the help of the super reaction ability and coordination effect of metal ions Zn 2+ , the paraffin (PCM) was well encapsulated by the sodium alginate (SA) shell by the cross-linking between SA and Zn 2+ . At the same time, Na 2 S·9H 2 O and 2-MeIM were selected to realize the loading of ZnS quantum dots and ZiF-8 in the materials by their coordination with excess Zn 2+ in the system. The results of differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), Ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared (UV–vis-NIR), Photoluminescence and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) indicated that the obtained PCM@SA/ZnS and PCM@SA/ZiF-8 not only retained good heat resistance and heat storage properties, but also had new functions such as fluorescence and adsorption. This work would provide a new idea for the development of multi-functional composite materials.

Fabrication and property of the avermectin-attapulgite composites regulated by mixed-surfactants and sodium alginate

Xiaoguang Zhang,Jiexiang Liu,Ruili Bai

OA-AP, DTAB-AP, DDBAB-AP complexes were synthesized by introducing surfactants of OA, DTAB and DDBAB into attapulgite (AP). The complexes were systematically characterized. The appearance of new diffraction peaks at low angle indicated a new lamellar structure of OA (DTAB, DDBAB)-AP complexes. Then, the pesticide avermectin (AV) composites of AV/DTAB-OA-AP, AV/DDBAB-OA-AP, sodium alginate (SA) @AV/DTAB-OA-AP and SA@AV/DDBAB-OA-AP were prepared and investigated detailedly. The basal spacings of AV/DTAB-OA-AP and AV/DDBAB-OA-AP were bigger than those of OA-AP and DTAB(DDBAB)-AP. The existences of AV, surfactants and SA molecules of the composites were further confirmed. Furthermore the effect of SA on AV release behaviors of SA@AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP microspheres was investigated and compared. Compared to AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP, the released rate of the microspheres decreased remarkably. The AV release behaviors of AV/DTAB (DDBAB)-OA-AP could be fitted with pseudo second-order model, while the first-order model was better to describe those of the microspheres. Finally, the bioassay of the microspheres were studied and analyzed. The microspheres had a longer duration and control effect on Mythimna separata . This study could be helpful to provide a pesticide delivery system to improve the utilization efficiency of pesticides.

In vitro colon fermentation behaviors of Ca2+ cross-linked guluronic acid block from sodium alginate

Dan Yuan,Wenqian Xiao,Ao Gao,Wei Lu,Zhiming Gao,Bing Hu,Yuehan Wu,Wenxin Jiang,Yanlei Li

The degradation of sodium alginate by human gut microbiota was found to be retarded via calcium cross-linking in our previous study. We hypothesized that the guluronic acid block (GB) on the alginate molecule might be the key structural region affecting alginate degradation by the gut microbiota when cross-linked with calcium. This study aims to prove this hypothesis by studying the structural features of the cross-linked GB on its in vitro fecal fermentation behaviors concerning the aspects of total carbohydrate contents, monosaccharide contents, short-chain fatty acids production, calcium state variations, and structural variations. Herein, GB isolated from sodium alginate was cross-linked under ranges of molar ratios of [Ca2+]/[–COOH] that further restricted the degradation by gut microbiota similar to the cross-linked alginates. First, total carbohydrate contents, short-chain fatty acids production, monosaccharides contents, and calcium state analyses confirmed that the degradation of GB by gut microbiota was restricted by calcium cross-linking. Furthermore, the tracking analysis of structural variations during in vitro fermentation revealed that the “granules” structure could further restrict degradation by the gut microbiota, leaving more cross-linked GB fragments surviving in comparison to the “networks” structure. In addition, Bacteroides xylanisolvens showed a significant positive correlation to the “cross-linking porosity (R = 0.825, p < 0.001), which supported our previous findings on fermentation behaviors of cross-linked alginate. Together, guluronic acid blocks are the key structural regions that retard the degradation of sodium alginate by the gut microbiota when cross-linked with calcium.

Injectable Modified Sodium Alginate Microspheres for Enhanced Operative Efficiency and Safety in Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection

Luzhan Huang,Yongchao Jiang,Pengcheng Zhang,Muhan Li,Bingrong Liu,Keyong Tang

Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is an effective method for resecting early-stage tumors in the digestive system. To achieve a low injection pressure of the injected fluid and continuous elevation of the mucosa following injection during the ESD technique, we introduced an innovative injectable sodium-alginate-based drug-loaded microsphere (Cipro-ThSA) for ESD surgery, which was generated through an emulsion reaction involving cysteine-modified sodium alginate (ThSA) and ciprofloxacin. Cipro-ThSA microspheres exhibited notable adhesiveness, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial properties, providing a certain level of postoperative wound protection. In vitro cell assays confirmed the decent biocompatibility of the material. Lastly, according to animal experiments involving submucosal elevation of porcine colons, Cipro-ThSA microspheres ensure surgically removable lift height while maintaining the mucosa for approximately 246% longer than saline, which could effectively reduce surgical risks while providing sufficient time for operation. Consequently, the Cipro-ThSA microsphere holds great promise as a novel submucosal injection material, in terms of enhancing the operational safety and effectiveness of ESD surgery.

Ionic organohydrogel with long-term environmental stability and multifunctionality based on PAM and sodium alginate

Fan Zhang,Shanshan Jiang,Dezhen Zhao,Yunhe Diao,Xuying Liu,Jinzhou Chen,Jie Liu,Huige Yang

Hydrogels possess several advantageous characteristics, including transparency, biocompatibility, and ionic conductivity, making them promising for applications in flexible electronics, drug delivery, ionic skin, and electrolytes. Nevertheless, creating a robust conductive and antifreezing hydrogel with enduring environmental stability remains a significant challenge. This study, based on the salt-out effect of alkali metal ion salts and binary solvent systems, employs a straightforward one-pot solvent exchange method to introduce dynamic and reversible non-covalent bonds (hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonds) into a polyacrylamide-sodium alginate (PAM-SA) dual-network hydrogel with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. By adjusting the types of ions and cryoprotective agents (CPA), a series of ion-conductive organic hydrogels with anti-freezing properties were successfully prepared. The resulting PAM/SA-Gly-KCl 1M hydrogel exhibits commendable mechanical properties (with a tensile strain of up to 1465 %, a tensile strength of 166 kPa, and toughness of 1354 kJ m 3 ), high ionic conductivity (0.59 S/m), outstanding frost resistance (–100 °C), and sustained long-term stability (maintaining 70 % of its weight for over one month in an open environment). Therefore, sensors based on organic hydrogels exhibit exceptional characteristics, including high strength, superior transparency, and dependable operation in low-temperature conditions. Its remarkable sensing sensitivity and stability and antifreeze properties facilitate operation across an extensive temperature range and contribute to an extended operational lifespan. Overall, this sensor proves conducive to developing enduring flexible electronic products in challenging environments, thereby unveiling novel prospects for the realms of smart wearable technology and health monitoring.
