Creating an efficient method that can provide simple, practical and high-throughput separation of oil–water mixtures has proved extremely challenging. Two-dimensional layered Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene material with excellent hydrophilicity has attracted substantial attention for oil–water separation. However, conventional Ti 3 C 2 T x separation membranes are susceptible to contamination by oil due to its relatively high adhesion to oil, hindering its practical applications in high-efficiency oil–water separation. To make Ti 3 C 2 T x have underwater superoleophobicity and low oil adhesion, the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x can be modified by introducing hydrophilic groups. Herein, L-lysine functionalized Ti 3 C 2 T x (Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly) was firstly prepared by decorating L-lysine on Ti 3 C 2 T x through electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding . A facile dip-coating method is then used to coat polyurethane (PU) sponge with Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly, obtaining a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponge. Owing to the excellent underwater superoleophobicity resulting from hydrophilic groups (–OH、–NH 3 ) on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly nanosheets and the enlarged interlayer spacing of Ti 3 C 2 T x , the Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponges demonstrated outstanding separation performance for a series of oil–water mixtures. Specifically, the Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponge exhibits low oil adhesion and superhydrophilic (WCA = 0°)/submerged superoleophobic (UOCA > 155°) properties. The Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponges displayed the best separation performance for cyclohexane/water mixture, and the maximum permeation flux is up to 221892 L m –2 h –1 , accompanied by a remarkable separation efficiency of higher than 99.2% after 100 cycles. The permeation flux has exceeded most of the previous reported multifunctional separation membranes. In addition, the Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponge also showed excellent separation performance for high-density oil dichloromethane/water with a separation efficiency over 99.4%. Of note, the Ti 3 C 2 Tx-Ly @PU sponge features excellent chemical stability to corrosive media, such as acidic, alkaline, and high salt solutions, possessing great potential for real-world applications. Furthermore, the as-prepared Ti 3 C 2 T x -Ly @PU sponge exhibits rapid and efficient separation of oil-water mixtures through a fully gravity-driven process, which makes it a good candidate for industrial oil-contaminated water treatment and oil spill clean-up, and also provides new insights into the design and development of functional Ti 3 C 2 T x through L-lysine modification. Therefore, this work reports a facile and promising way to fabricate scalable superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic sponge material for highly efficient oil–water separation.

MXenes, as a rapidly developing family of materials, have achieved promising results as solid-state supercapacitor (SSS) electrode. Investigations of optimizing MXene-based SSSs concentrate on electrode recently. However, the state-of-the-art MXene-based SSSs present inferior rate performances compared to aqueous devices. Herein, we optimize the performance of MXene-based SSS by introducing a green, low temperature resistant and highly ionic conductive methanesulfonic acid/polyvinyl acetate (MSA/PVA) hydrogel as electrolyte. The assembled SSS (FT-SSS) outperforms the one fabricated by the usual liquid electrolyte casting method, showing high areal capacitance (1719 mF cm −2 ), long cycle life (92%, 80,000 cycles), low-temperature resistance (-30°C) and flexibility. More importantly, FT-SSS presents superior capacitance and rate performance that exceeds the corresponding aqueous supercapacitor (AQS). The areal capacitance increases by 127% at 1000 mV s −1 compared with AQS. Energy dispersive spectroscopy maps, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis reveal that MSA pre-intercalate into Ti 3 C 2 T x , forming electrodes with a wrinkled and porous structure, which reduces MXene stacking effect and enhances electrolyte accessibility. -OH and H 2 O (physisorbed to -OH) content in Ti 3 C 2 T x rise, too, further improving MXene pseudocapacitive performance.

High-performance electromagnetic (EM) absorbing materials are in urgent need due to severe EM pollution caused by fast development of communication technology and electronic devices. Gradient structure benefits EM absorbing performance. However, the relevant study is very limited, and the relationship between component layers and overall performance is unclear. Herein, a gradient structure containing impedance matching layer, lossy layer, and reflective layer is built via repeated casting-drying method using Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene and polyvinyl alcohol. With optimized gradient structure, the minimum reflection loss (RL) reaches −74.8 dB with effective absorbing bandwidth (EAB) covering the whole X-band. The good absorbing performance is ascribed to the good impedance matching, which is derived from the stepwisely increased permittivity of each layer. Moreover, it is found that RL reaches the lowest value when lossy layer permittivity is close to the average permittivity of impedance matching layer and reflective layer. In addition, the decrease of lossy layer permittivity causes the decrease of total thickness of the gradient structure. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of gradient structure toward strong and broadband microwave absorption and provides rules for designing proper gradient structures to satisfy different requirements.

Electromagnetic radiation has been a special form of environmental pollution that has attracted widespread attention in the past few decades. Combining the advantages of one-dimensional (1D) materials forming conductive networks and two-dimensional (2D) materials possessing multiple reflections is an excellent research method for the development of electromagnetic wave (EW) absorbing materials. Herein, Ni@polypyrrole nanochains/Ti3C2Tx (Ni@PPy NCs/Ti3C2Tx, NiPM) ternary composites have been successfully prepared through the combined utilization of the solvothermal method, hydrothermal method and vacuum-assisted filtration. The ternary composites consisting of 1D core-shell Ni@PPy NCs (NiP) and 2D Ti3C2Tx can effectively combine conductive loss, dielectric loss and magnetic loss, resulting in excellent impedance matching. The minimum reflection loss (RLmin) of the prepared ternary composites can be up to −62.61 dB at 6.82 GHz with a thickness of 2.71 mm while the effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 4.46 GHz at 1.38 mm. This work provides a general guideline for the development of a MXene and conducting polymer matrix design for EW absorbing materials.

Nanocellulose-mediated MXene composites have attracted widespread attention in the fields of sustainable energy, wearable sensors, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. However, the effects of different nanocelluloses on the multifunctional properties of nanocellulose/Ti3C2Tx composites still need further exploration. Herein, we use three types of nanocelluloses, including bacterial cellulose (BC), cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), and 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yloxy (TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs), as intercalation to link Ti3C2Tx nanosheets via a self-assembly process, improving the dispersibility, film-forming ability, mechanical properties, and multifunctional performances of nanocelluloses/Ti3C2Tx hybrids through electrostatic forces and hydrogen bonding. The optimized ultrathin (∼40 μm) TOCN/Ti3C2Tx film integrates excellent tensile strength (∼98.89 MPa), long-term stability (during deformation and water erosion), favorable photoelectric response (photosensitivity up to 2620%), and temperature response (reaching 163 °C in only 12 s). Laser-cutting patterned TOCN/Ti3C2Tx films are assembled into flexible multifunctional electronics, exhibiting splendid photoresponse performances and tunable electromagnetic energy shielding capability (>96.4%) related to the variation of water content at the film–gel electrolyte interface. Multifunctional patterned devices based on TOCN/Ti3C2Tx composite films provide a novel pathway to rationally design wearable EMI devices with photoelectric response and photothermal conversion.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection in ultra-low concentrations is highly demanded in industry and daily life. Ethanol is one of the most encountered VOCs. Through calcining the precursor of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which are in situ grown on 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets, Co 3 O 4 /Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites with the mesoporous structure were synthesized for ethanol sensing. The results showed that the Co 3 O 4 /Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor has an ultra-high response ( (190 towards 50 ppm ethanol), fast response/recovery speed (50 s/45 s to 50 ppm ethanol), a low detection limit (<1 ppm), ideal selectivity and long-term stability. Compared to the pure Co 3 O 4 and Ti 3 C 2 T x sensors, the Co 3 O 4 /Ti 3 C 2 T x nanocomposites sensor significantly improves ethanol-sensing performance. Within the nanocomposites, the 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheet acts as a favorable platform for the uniform nucleation and growth of Co 3 O 4 , while the mesoporous Co 3 O 4 can provide more adsorption sites for gas sensing. In addition, the formation of hybrid heterojunction is also an essential factor for enhanced sensing behaviors. This work provides a new avenue to develop nanocomposites based on metal oxide and 2D materials for VOCs sensing.

Levels of serotonin above or below normal values in the human body can cause a variety of diseases, including depression, Alzheimer's disease , and irritable bowel syndrome. In this study, we developed a novel electrochemical sensor based on Ti 3 C 2 T x -reduced oxide graphene (Ti 3 C 2 T x -rGO) nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode for the detection of serotonin in human biofluids. The Ti 3 C 2 T x -rGO nanocomposite was synthesized by hydrazine reduction followed by self-assembly, which was characterized using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy coupled energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and Raman spectroscopy. The obtained Ti 3 C 2 T x -rGO nanocomposite could not only mitigate the restacking problem of Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets but also provide a large surface area and effective active sites for improving the electrochemical performance of the nanocomposite. The electrochemical sensor fabricated based on the Ti 3 C 2 T x -rGO nanocomposite showed high sensitivity, excellent specificity, and good stability for serotonin detection. Additionally, it was successfully used to determine serotonin in human blood plasma, and the results were within the expected range. The serotonin detection method demonstrated in this work is expected to be applied for the prevention and rapid diagnosis of serotonin-related diseases.

Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acids to alkanes is key to convert renewable resources into biofuels. Here, we design a new Ti3C2Tx MXene-confined Ni catalyst with extraordinary catalytic performance in the HDO of palmitic acid. Due to the large two-dimensional surface and chemical activity, Ti3C2Tx MXene is able to disperse and anchor Ni particles through strong synergistic coupling. As a consequence, the obtained Ni/Ti3C2Tx catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance with a complete conversion of palmitic acid. It can be recycled in five runs without activity reduction, demonstrating good stability of the as-prepared catalyst. The facilitated catalytic performance can be ascribed to the synergic effect of metal Ni and Ti3C2Tx MXene. Ti3C2Tx MXene facilitates the adsorption and conversion of palmitic acid to aldehyde. The dispersed Ni particles benefit from the hydrogenation of hexadecanal intermediate with the cleavage of C–C bonds and the dehydration–hydrogenation of hexadecanol to form alkanes.

Flexible pressure sensors made of carbon materials have been used in electronic skins (e-skins), whose performance can be enhanced if composite sensing materials are used. Herein, an MXene/polyaniline/bacterial cellulose (MXene/PANI/BC) aerogel sensor has been fabricated through the self-assembly process between the MXene and one-dimensional active material. Combined with fewer-layer or single-layer MXenes, the as-fabricated aerogel could be used as the active layer of the pressure sensor, monitoring tiny motion signals of finger bending, wrist bending, and pulse beating. Bluetooth wireless transmission could also be realized to monitor the real-time spatial pressure distributions on the mobile phone, making the aerogel-based sensor an ideal candidate in e-skins. Meanwhile, the aerogel-based sensor is sensitive toward NH3 due to the unique three-dimensional (3D) structure of the aerogel and the abundant terminal groups (such as −O, −OH, and −F) of the MXene in the system that ensure efficient electronic transfer for the sensing process and create active sites for the absorption with the target gas. This work offers a versatile platform to develop MXenes to fabricate 3D composite aerogels for high-performance flexible multiple sensors.

A ternary composite photocatalyst with high catalytic activity (TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI) was synthesized using the simple solvothermal and coprecipitation methods. The structure, morphology, photoelectric properties, and photocatalytic activity of the prepared materials were studied using various characterization techniques. The composite catalysts TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI with different proportions of TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x to AgI of 10%, 20%, 50%, 70%, and 90% were prepared by varying the amounts of AgNO 3 and KI. Compared to AgI and TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x , TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI demonstrated a superior photocatalytic degradation activity for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) under simulated sunlight. The degradation rate of TCH with 70% TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI composite photocatalyst reached 97%. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra showed that the recombination of photogenerated electrons of 70% TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI was effectively inhibited after the formation of AgI, TiO 2 , and Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunctions . The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated that a rapid interfacial charge transfer of the 70% TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI composite to the electron acceptors (Ti 3 C 2 T x ). Ti 3 C 2 T x had high conductivity and can effectively accelerate the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers as a charge medium. Therefore, the enhancement of photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI can be attributed to the Z-scheme heterojunction with non-metal Ti 3 C 2 T x as the solid medium. In addition, the trapping agent experiment showed that superoxide radicals, singlet oxygen, and holes were the main active substances in the photocatalytic degradation of TCH by the TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x /AgI composite.

Two-dimensional materials, especially the newly emerging MXene, have attracted numerous interests in the fields of energy conversion/storage and electromagnetic shielding/absorption. However, the inherently inevitable aggregation and absence of magnetic loss of MXene considerably limit its electromagnetic absorption application. The introduction of magnetic component and favorable structural engineering are the alternatives to improve the microwave absorption (MA) performance. Herein, we report a spheroidization strategy to assemble double-shell MXene@Ni microspheres, where the commonly lamellar MXene are reshaped into three-dimensional microspheres that provide the substrate for oriented growth of Ni nanospikes. Whereas this structural feature offers massive accessible active surfaces that effectively promote the dielectric loss ability, the introduction of magnetic Ni nanospikes enables the additional magnetic loss capacity. Benefiting from these merits, the synthesized 3D MXene@Ni microspheres exhibit superior MA performance with the minimum reflection loss value of −59.6 dB at an ultrathin thickness (∼1.5 mm) and effective absorption bandwidth of 4.48 GHz. Moreover, the electron holography results reveal that the high-density anisotropy magnetism plays an important role in the improvement of MA performance, which provides an insight for the design of MXene-based materials as high-efficient microwave absorbers.

Microwave shielding materials and absorbers serve important roles in improving the reliability of smart devices and military equipment. In this work, three-dimensional (3D) Ti 3 C 2 T x /Fe 3 O 4 composites with adjustable electromagnetic responses are studied. Taking advantage of the negatively charged surface of the Ti 3 C 2 T x , the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) is used to precipitate the delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets. The volatilization of CTAB during the annealing process inflates the Ti 3 C 2 T x , and leads to the three-dimensional architecture of the composite. The results show that the free-standing 3D Ti 3 C 2 T x /Fe 3 O 4 composite film exhibits a high shielding efficiency of 60 dB in the X band. Owing to the traits of great flexibility, low apparent density, and thin thickness, the 3D Ti 3 C 2 T x /Fe 3 O 4 composite film achieves a high specific shielding efficiency of 3.5 × 10 5 dB/(g·cm −2 ). Furthermore, through the control of crystal defects in one-step annealing treatment, the shielding material can be transformed into a wideband microwave absorber. A high reflection loss up to −57 dB can be realized. And a 2-mm-thick absorber whose reflection loss is better than −10 dB in 11.2 ~ 18 GHz is also achieved. The experimental and first-principal studies on the evolution mechanism reveal that the destruction of the Ti-C bond mainly leads to the degradation of electrical conductivity and the improvement of impedance matching. Introduced crystal defects can help enhance the dielectric loss as well. The synergistic effects of ohmic loss, dielectric loss, and magnetic loss give birth to a broadband absorption of the composite.
