Building energy conservation through the development of transparent thermal insulation materials that selectively block near-infrared radiation while maintaining visible light transmittance has emerged as a key strategy for global carbon neutrality. WO3is a semiconductor oxide with near-infrared absorption capabilities. However, the limited absorption efficiency and narrow spectral coverage of pure WO3significantly diminish its overall transparent thermal insulation performance, thereby restricting its practical application in energy-saving glass. Therefore, this study successfully prepared Sn-doped WO3materials using a one-step hydrothermal method, controlling the Sn:W molar ratio from 0.1:1 to 2.0:1. Through evaluation of transparent thermal insulation performance of a series of Sn-doped WO3samples, we found that Sn:W = 0.9:1 exhibited the most excellent performance, with NIR shielding efficiency reaching 93.9%, which was 1.84 times higher than pure WO3. Moreover, this sample demonstrated a transparent thermal insulation index (THI) of 4.38, representing increases of 184% and 317%, respectively, compared to pure WO3. These enhancements highlight the strong NIR absorption capability achieved by Sn-doped WO3through structural regulation. When Sn doping reaches a certain concentration, it triggers a structural transformation of WO3from monoclinic to tetragonal phase. After reaching the critical solubility threshold, phase separation occurs, forming a multiphase structure composed of a Sn-doped WO3matrix and secondary SnO2and WSn0.33O3phases, which synergistically enhance oxygen vacancy formation and W6+to W5+reduction, achieving excellent NIR absorption through small polaron hopping and localized surface plasmon resonance effects. This study provides important insights for developing high-performance transparent thermal insulation materials for energy-efficient buildings.

In this work, WO3 was used as a support to prepare noble metal-based IrRu/WO3 catalysts for the CO selective catalytic reduction (CO-SCR) in oxygen-rich flue gas. The CO-SCR activity was promoted through the synergistic interaction between Ir and Ru, coupled with the tailored interface between oxygen-deficient WO3 and the bimetallic IrRu nanoclusters. XRD and TEM results confirmed the formation of well-dispersed Ir–Ru nanoparticles, as well as a reduction-induced transformation of WO3 to WO2.92. Various techniques, along with DFT calculations, were employed to investigate the synergistic roles of Ir and Ru, as well as the contribution of the WO3 support. The enhanced CO-SCR activity of IrRu/WO3 was attributed to the electronic synergy between Ir and Ru, which stabilized Ir0 and facilitated NO activation, and the oxygen vacancies in WO3 induced by the strong metal–support interaction (SMSI). These vacancies not only protected active metal sites but also generated reactive oxygen species that stabilize NOx as nitrates. This work addresses the gap in understanding WO3-supported IrRu bimetallic catalysts and provides new perspectives for designing efficient CO-SCR catalysts, setting the stage for further mechanistic and kinetic investigations.

In this work, the compositional optimization in copper oxide/tungsten trioxide (CuO/WO3) composites was systematically studied for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) sensing. The response of CuO/WO3composites changes fromp-type ton-type as the CuO content decreases. Furthermore, thep-type response weakens while then-type response strengthens as the Cu/W molar ratio decreases from 1:0 to 1:10. The optimal Cu/W molar ratio is 1:10, at which the sensor presents the ultrahighn-type response of 1.19 × 105to 20 ppm H2S gas at 40 °C. Once the temperature rises from 40 °C to 250 °C, the CuO/WO3(1:1) sensor presents thep-nresponse transformation, and the CuO/WO3(1:1.5) sensor changes from no response ton-type response, because the increased temperature facilitates the Cu-S bonds break and weakens thep-type CuO contribution to the total response, such that the CuS bond decomposition by a thermal effect was verified by a Raman analysis. In addition, with a decrease in CuO content, the CuO is transformed from partly to completely converting to CuS, causing the resistance of CuO to decrease from increasing and, hence, a weakening mode ofp-CuO andn-WO3to the total response turns to a synergistic mode to it.

Three tungsten oxides (WO 3 -W1 to WO 3 -W3) with different morphologies were prepared and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and HR-TEM measurements. The as-synthesized tungsten oxides were screened as photocatalysts for visible-light-driven cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions along with commercially available WO 3 -W4. Preliminary studies showed that WO 3 -W1 with hollow sphere morphology efficiently photocatalyzed oxidative C H functionalization as compared to other tested samples, by using molecular oxygen as a benign oxidant. The superior photocatalytic performance of WO 3 -W1 can be attributed to its larger surface area and pore structure which was supported by nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. Further, this protocol was used to synthesize α-functionalized tertiary amines in good to excellent yields by irradiating a mixture of WO 3 -W1, tertiary amine, and nucleophiles (nitromethane or ketones) to visible light under aerobic conditions. Moreover, WO 3 -W1 can be recycled and reused with no obvious change in catalytic activity, indicating that this is an environmentally friendly and economical protocol and also underlines the robustness of the catalysts in light mediated cross dehydrogenative coupling reactions. It is hoped that our results could offer useful information for designing of new heterogeneous semiconductors for photoredox catalytic organic reactions.

Plasma-catalytic CO2 hydrogenation to CO offers a promising route for carbon-neutral chemical synthesis. However, its advancement is constrained by low energy efficiency and limited mechanistic insight. Here, we developed an oxygen vacancy-engineered Pd-WO3–x catalyst supported on nickel foam (NF), which exhibits enhanced performance in ambient plasma-driven CO2 conversion. The system leverages the conductive properties of NF to spatially divide the discharge zone into streamer and filamentary discharge zones, thereby enhancing plasma activation and interfacial charge transfer. Catalyst characterization reveals that Pd plays a critical role in stabilizing metastable oxygen vacancies (OVs) within WO3–x, which function as electron reservoirs to promote CO2 dissociation into CO. Density functional theory calculations and in situ spectroscopic studies confirm that Pd facilitates H2 dissociation, while vibrationally excited CO2 generated in the plasma gas phase preferentially adsorbs at OV sites. At a specific energy input of 33.6 kJ L–1, the system demonstrates superior performance, achieving 54.9% CO2 conversion with 99.8% selectivity toward CO, surpassing typical plasma-catalytic benchmarks. The catalyst exhibited good stability over 100 h of continuous operation, with a slight decrease in CO2 conversion (<10%) and nearly unchanged CO selectivity (>99%) due to strong metal–support interactions and the conductive nature of NF. This work demonstrates that OV engineering provides a promising strategy for designing efficient plasma-catalytic systems for CO2 conversion.

The SnO 2 /WO 3 nanoparticle-decorated heterojunction ensures electron and ion exchange. • Decorated WO 3 nanoparticles effectively suppress the volume expansion of SnO 2 . • This heterostructure exposes abundant active sites for faradaic redox reactions. • Synergistic effects enable specific capacitance of 238.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . • Interfacial interactions maintain structural integrity with 91.2% stability. One-dimensional (1D) metal oxide nanomaterials attract increasing interest for supercapacitor applications. Therefore, the rational design and facile construction of unique 1D heterostructures remain highly desirable for advanced energy storage. Herein, a novel architecture comprising 1D SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs) uniformly decorated with 0D WO 3 nanoparticles (NPs) is successfully fabricated via coaxial electrospinning coupled with subsequent thermal calcination. By finely tuning the molar ratio of the respective precursors, the loading density of the WO 3 NPs on the SnO 2 skeleton is precisely modulated. This distinctive 1D/0D heterostructure effectively exposes abundant electroactive sites and significantly augments the interfacial contact area with the electrolyte, synergistically boosting the electrochemical kinetics. Consequently, at an optimal WO 3 -to-SnO 2 molar ratio of 1:1, the assembled SWHNC-2 electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 238.3 F g −1 at 1 A g −1 . It also exhibits suitable rate capability (retaining 56.7% capacitance at 10 A g −1 ) and moderate cycling stability (91.2% capacitance retention over 2000 cycles at 5 A g −1 ). Moreover, a symmetric supercapacitor assembled from this composite achieves maximum energy density of 4.64 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 448 W kg −1 , while maintaining 78% of its initial capacitance after 1000 cycles, indicating its preliminary potential for energy storage. These findings unequivocally highlight the rationally engineered SnO 2 @WO 3 composite as a promising electrode candidate for next-generation supercapacitors. Tungsten trioxide (WO3)-based electrochromic film is a promising component of all-solid-state electrochromic devices, which can be used as smart windows to control the indoor temperature and incident solar irradiation. However, its practical application suffers from significant challenges including slow switching kinetics, low cycling stability, and high production costs. To overcome the limitations, a mild chemical bath deposition approach is introduced. Through strategic control of reactants, the thickness of WO3 film and the constituent WO3 nanosheets forming the film can both be systematically regulated. The optimized W2 sample demonstrates remarkable electrochromic performance, achieving an optical modulation amplitude of ΔT = 67.85% at 620 nm along with good cycling stability, which was caused by its well-engineered hierarchical structure featuring a thin film configuration (430 nm) composed of ultrathin nanosheets (39.48 nm). This work points out a new strategy for modulating the optical properties of WO3 electrochromic film through reactants control during a chemical bath deposition process, providing valuable insights for the rational design of high-performance smart windows.

A novel biphase silver tungstate (Ag 2 WO 4 )/tungstate oxide (WO 3 ) photocatalyst was synthesized through electrospinning process combined with a facile solid chemical reaction. The X-ray diffraction patterns , energy dispersive spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that the photocatalyst is composed of monoclinic WO 3 , β-Ag 2 WO 4 and γ-Ag 2 WO 4 . The Ag 2 WO 4 /WO 3 can completely degrade the rhodamine B (RhB) within 20 min under 300 W xenon lamp . The first-order kinetics constant k of Ag 2 WO 4 /WO 3 is 26.3 times of WO 3 . The recycling photocatalytic tests proclaimed that the Ag 2 WO 4 /WO 3 is relatively stable. The composites possess smaller impedance and higher photocurrent intensity, which displayed the promoted photoelectrochemical activities. The broadened light harvesting and accelerated photogenerated charge carrier migration account well for the enhanced photocatalytic performance of the composite. The direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism should be responsible for the boosted photocatalytic performances of biphase Ag 2 WO 4 /WO 3 . This work gave new insights into the design and construction of WO 3 -based direct Z-scheme photocatalysts.

Solar-driven benzene oxidation with dioxygen (O 2 ) provides a green and sustainable alternative for phenol production, but the construction of heterogeneous photocatalysts remains a huge challenge for efficient conversion under visible light irradiation and ambient conditions. Herein, we reported a facile microwave assisted strategy for the defect engineering of two-dimensional (2D) tungsten oxide while well maintaining the original crystalline architecture. Abundant oxygen vacancies were constructed on the 2D tungsten oxide, which remarkably promoted photochemical (light harvesting, charge separation and transfer) and O 2 activation behaviors, this promotion effect was further strengthened by the hybridization with Pt species with the formation of Schottky junction. The champion catalyst enabled a high phenol yield of 11.3% with a selectivity of 91% in the visible-light-driven benzene hydroxylation with atmospheric O 2 at room temperature. The catalyst can be facilely recovered and reused with stable activity. The oxygen vacancies and Pt co-catalyst were demonstrated to play vital roles in the photocatalytic formation of the reactive oxygen species (hydroxyl radials, ·OH) for effective oxidation.

The construction of matchable multi-heterojunction with appropriate morphology provides a good strategy for improving the performance of semiconductor photocatalyst in degrading organic pollutants. Herein, binary WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets coupled with various contents of mesoporous anatase TiO 2 nanoparticles for constructing TiO 2 /WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction composite photocatalysts are hydrothermally fabricated. The investigation on structure and properties in the TiO 2 /WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 ternary photocatalysts in terms of the incorporation of TiO 2 is systematically conducted by using characterization techniques. The results show that the TiO 2 /WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 ternary composite at the optimized Ti/W ratio of 1:2 has the highest visible light-irradiated MB degradation, which is 9.5 times and 2.8 times that of pure TiO 2 and pristine WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 nanosheets, respectively. The effective charge separation between TiO 2 and WO 3 /Bi 2 WO 6 has been confirmed by PL and current–voltage (I-V) characteristics. A possible mechanism is clarified through the active species trapping experiments using various scavengers, indicating that photogenerated holes and • OH radicals play a key role. The enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of the unique structure with some favorable properties, including the elevation of the separation efficiency of photoinduced electron–hole pairs at the multi-heterojunction interfaces with appropriate band structures as well as more active adsorption sites of mesoporous/nanosheet microstructure in the degradation process. This research may provide a simple method for design and preparation of novel heterojunction photocatalysts for enhanced visible light-driven photocatalytic activity. Graphical Abstract

Europium nitrate, ammonium tungstate and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide were used, and Eu-doped WO3 (WO3:Eu3+) nanopowder was synthesized by the micro-emulsion method. Tetraethyl silicate was hydrolysed into SiO2 and WO3:Eu3+ nanopowder coated with SiO2 (SiO2/WO3:Eu3+) was obtained. The microstructure and morphology of the prepared nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ powders were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and HRTEM. Results showed that the prepared nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ powders composed of WO3 of monoclinic and SiO2 of amorphous, which was spherical and granular, and the grain size reaches 50 nm. The tribological behaviour of nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ as extreme pressure and anti-wear additive in the water-based fluid was studied by a four-ball machine. The results demonstrate that nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ exhibits superior load-bearing capacity, anti-wear and anti-friction performance in water-based fluid, especially when the optimal concentration of nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ is 0.4 wt-%. WSD, COF and wear volume of the nano-SiO2/WO3:Eu3+ decreased by 62.43%, 30.20% and 67.34%, respectively, compared with that of the water-based fluid.

Photochromic coatings have been widely used in many fields such as architecture, transportation, and military because of the combination of reversible color-changing properties with the insulation and protection of substrates. Conventionally, organic photochromic components are used for the preparation of photochromic coatings with fast photo-response and excellent fatigue resistance, but the preparation of these coatings is costly and time-consuming. Here, we have developed a relatively simple and cost-effective strategy for the preparation of water-based photochromic polyurethane coatings. Er(III)-doped WO 3 was synthesized and used as the photochromic component for the preparation of polyurethane/Er(III)-doped WO 3 composites, which were further used for the preparation of photochromic coatings. The properties of the coatings were tested and characterized. Due to their excellent thermal stability, water resistance, fatigue resistance, and photochromism, these coatings might have practical applications in various areas.
